Welcome to another episode of the Restoring the Soul podcast with your host, Michael John Cusick. Today, we have the pleasure of diving into a profound and transformative conversation with Ian Morgan Cron. Ian is not just a friend to Michael but a celebrated author of books like "The Road Back to You," and his deeply impactful spiritual memoir, "Jesus, My Father, the CIA, and Me," as well as his novel "Chasing Francis."In this episode, we take a close look at Ian's latest book, "The Fix: How the 12 Steps Offer a Surprising Path of Transformation for the Well-Adjusted, the Down and Out, and Everyone in Between." Ian shares candidly about his own journey through addiction and recovery, emphasizing how the 12 steps can profoundly impact anyone's life, not just those battling addiction.Even if you consider yourself "well-adjusted" or far from the grip of addiction, this conversation will challenge you to rethink what it means to truly live a life of transformation and spiritual awakening. Michael and Ian explore how all of us, in some way or another, have compulsive relationships with behaviors, substances, or people that affect our lives negatively. They delve into the essence of the 12 steps, their application beyond mere addiction recovery, and how they serve as a robust spiritual framework aligning us with God and our authentic selves.Ian's vulnerability stands out as he shares personal stories, including a relapse in 2020 that led to a renewed understanding and deeper application of these steps. Together, Michael and Ian discuss the importance of community, admitting powerlessness, the role of the ego, and the journey toward a spiritual awakening.ENGAGE THE RESTORING THE SOUL PODCAST:- Follow us on YouTube - Tweet us at @michaeljcusick and @PodcastRTS- Like us on Facebook- Follow us on Instagram & Twitter- Follow Michael on Twitter- Email us at info@restoringthesoul.com Thanks for listening!

R.G. Shore began his journey with a bachelor's degree in Religious Studies, but his spiritual journey has led him much farther. Through many hardships, and firsthand experience with the marginalized, R.G. has really begun to shape and cultivate his spirituality through lived experience. R.G. was incarcerated for nearly 3 years. It was through his incarceration that he began to sit with his trauma. Being surrounded by very racist and dangerous people led R.G. inward. It was in prison that he began to master his own techniques for going into the body and sitting with the trauma within himself. R.G. has a Masters in Education, and is a certified Reiki Master, and a certified spiritual director through SDI, and the Urban Spiritual Center in Portland, Oregon. He specializes in embodied Spiritual Counseling, Healing energy, visualization meditative techniques, and Reiki Healing, and helps many people with grounding themselves. He has a passion for working with marginalized communities, including people of color, people who have been incarcerated, or people dealing with religious trauma. He is also the Award Winning Author of his Spiritual Memoir, The Ocean Inside Me. _________________________ Work with me, your host, here: Thelovelyalea.com Pre-order MEANINGFUL MANIFESTATION thelovelyalea.com/book Get spiritual 1-on-1 Coaching thelovelyalea.com/services Become a Patreon Member to get behind the scenes, extra content, and workshops.patreon.com/thelovelyalea Follow me on Instagram instagram.com/thelovelyalea ( Remember I will never DM you for readings - watch out for Scammers ! ) --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thelovelyalea/support

Do you ever feel overwhelmed by trying to be perfect? I mean, Jesus did tell us to “be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect” (Mt. 5:48), and Paul certainly took this seriously as he gladly “spent and consumed himself for souls” (2 Cor 12:15). But sometimes, I think the pursuit of perfection leaves behind God's plan for our lives. In fact, living a holy life might mean embracing the imperfection around us. Today's guest, Colleen Carol Campbell, former journalist and presidential speechwriter and author of The Heart of Perfection tells us what she has learned on this topic. Tune in to hear: Personal stories of how the saints influenced her life and perspective. Practical tips for overcoming the pressures of perfectionism. Insights on balancing professional success with personal faith. Advice on finding peace and spiritual growth amidst life's challenges. To hear more from Colleen, go to Colleen-Campbell.com (https://colleen-campbell.com/) or grab her book The Heart of Perfection (https://www.amazon.com/Heart-Perfection-Saints-Taught-Perfect/dp/1982106174/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1596841009&sr=8-2). Hello, friends! I got to know Steven Andrews along with you guys this week! We hadn't actually met before recording, and it was SO much fun getting to chat with him! During Pride Month, I've chosen to highlight some amazing members of the writing community who identify on the LGBTQ+ spectrum, and my friend Louis was kind enough to recommend Steven to come chat. I'm so glad he did, because Steven's book, That's Me in the Closet, sounds like such an amazing story! It's about his journey from an abusive/neglected childhood, to foster care, and finally to learning about himself as he identified as a bisexual man. He's currently a minister and counselor who aims to help others who have been in the closet to live fully and authentically as themselves. You can hang out with Steven online on Facebook and Instagram, using the handle 1actualyou. I hope you enjoy today's episode and be sure to let me know in the Q&A poll what you think about it! Do you have a testimony? If you are familiar with the culture of evangelical church, you will know what is being asked. Maybe you heard someone give their testimony at church, or at camp. In this context, testimony meant a personal account of your life or background with an emphasis on your conversion to evangelical faith. It was communicated, largely, with the intent and hope that those listening, who had not experienced such a conversion, may, themselves, make a declaration of faith. Spiritual memoir is different than testimony. Richard Lischer's book, Our Hearts are Restless, introduces us to the spiritual memoir of some interesting people. In describing spiritual memoir, Lischer says, “some lives are construed as if lived in the presence of God.” We found the book wonderful and thoughtful. Lischer skillfully and compassionately (for subject and reader) opens the accounts of the people to whom he introduces us in a way that helps to ask meaningful questions about life and faith. Enjoy the episode and if you are so inclined, read the book – it really is good.
In this episode of our podcast, we reconnect with RG Shore, author of the spiritual memoir "The Ocean Inside Me." Expanding on our previous discussion last fall about his book in the making, RG delves deeper into his extraordinary journey of healing racial trauma. He shares his unique experience of finding peace and self-awareness while incarcerated in a predominantly white prison, emphasizing the paradox of discovering healing in a place of confinement. Central to RG's journey is the practice of visual meditation, which he used as a sanctuary amidst the chaos and a tool for introspection. In our last conversation with RG (Episode: 'White Noise, Brown Trauma: A Story of Awakening ft. Ro Shore'), we explored his profound story of personal growth and the transformative impact of meditation and embodiment practices during his incarceration. This episode builds upon that foundation, offering new insights into RG's continued journey and the evolution of his healing process.Throughout this episode, RG also delves into the process of self-publishing and the evolution of the publishing industry. His decision to control his narrative by self-publishing is a powerful statement on authenticity and self-determination. This episode not only explores RG's book but also his broader vision of healing and growth, which extends to developing a masterclass on Udemy and creating a supportive community through his nonprofit organization, Northwest Wisdom. His holistic approach to healing invites others to explore their paths to inner peace and healing. This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in personal growth, healing, and the transformative power of storytelling. RG's insights and experiences are not only inspiring but also offer practical approaches to overcoming personal challenges. To hear the full story and learn more about RG's journey and his techniques for self-discovery, tune into the full episode.Links and Resources Mentioned:Link to previous episode: White Noise, Brown Trauma: A Story of Awakening ft. A world-renowned expert in the mind-body connection, Joan Borysenko, Ph.D., completed the Hoffman Process in 1990. This conversation with Joan and Sharon is a deep exploration into the nature of callings through the lens of Joan's life. The callings of her Spirit first showed up early in her life. At the age of ten, Joan experienced a very difficult journey through childhood OCD. At one point, she had profound realizations of how she could help heal herself and did so. Through this, as a child, she realized she would become someone who could help others heal from similar challenges. Through her Spiritual Self, Joan has been guided into and along a life of both self-discovery and deep service to the world. Joan became one of the first to work directly with AIDS patients, even when we didn't yet know much about AIDS itself. She tells us that her courage to step into this role without medically knowing the risks came from listening to Spirit. Her story is a moving recollection of this time when so many were suffering greatly from this epidemic. Joan has been on the cutting edge of scientific inquiry into Mind-Body well-being. With clarity and candor, she shares how her journey has been a labor of both science and Spirit. As Joan shares, our calling isn't a single thing. Our calling changes as life changes. Our job is to listen deeply and to allow our Spiritual Self to flow through us into the world. As she has for many years, Joan leads Hoffman's Advisory Council acting as its Chair. Content warning: This episode mentions experiences with OCD and suicide, and may not be suitable for all listeners. If you or someone you know is suicidal, please reach out to The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK (8255), or message the Crisis Text Line at 741741. Her work has appeared in The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, Public Television, and on numerous websites. She is president of Mind-Body Health Sciences, LLC in Santa Fe, NM -the Land of Enchantment- where she lives and tends her outdoor gardens, indoor gardens, and gardens of the heart with her husband Gordon Dveirin, EdD, and their two standard poodles, Mitzi and Lola. A JOURNEY THROUGH LIFETIMES with DENA MERRIAM “To make steel, you have to go through fire.” – author Dena Merriam, on growth through challenges “The foundation of the Universe is love.” – author Dena Merriam Episode Summary: Today we talk about past lives, past lives, and past lives! Dena Merriam is an author, storyteller and founder of the Global Peace Initiative for Women -- bringing spiritual resources to address critical global challenges, such as conflict, social justice, and ecological scarring of the earth. Her first book “Journey Through Time, a Spiritual Memoir of Life, Death and Rebirth” takes us on a journey back through seven consecutive lives, revealing the intricate patterns that emerge as one life leads into another. Her second book, “The Untold Stories of Sita, an Empowering Tale for Our Time” takes us back to a much earlier age, several thousand years BCE to a pre-patriarchal era when humanity had not fully separated itself from the natural world. Her third book, “When the Bright Moon Rises: The Awakening of Ancient Memories”, is currently out. She has a fourth book in the works. Listen in to hear how Dena came to know all of her previous lives and the tapestry of interconnectedness between them. Topics We Discuss: [3:55] Dena's spontaneous recollection of 7 previous and interconnected lives, and her investigation in today's world to validate her memories. Recalling pre-war Russia and WW2 in Europe while trying to navigate her current life. Being skeptical at first, Dena traveled to those locations to confirm that her memories were valid. [7:18] How patterns, aspirations and desires emerged like a beautiful mandala interweaving lives. [8:10] there's no set timeframe on how long you have to wait to come back into a new incarnation. The flexibility of time in non-[physical dimensions. When the conditions are right, we “take life”. [9:55] How people and places stimulate her ancient memories. [11:20] Visiting a temple in India caused spontaneous recollection of a painful experience of love lost. A time without warfare. A time of simple pleasures and peaceful, joyful life. [14:52] Recalling a life in China, the wisdom of the Tao, and a great spiritual depth. [16:21] Spiritual lessons, knowledge, wisdom, awakenings. How her experiences changed her relationship with death, which she calls the next frontier of science. Along with acknowledging other dimensional beings – beings we don't see. Understanding consciousness separate from the material form, separate from the body. [18:52] An exercise: take down the highlights of this life – the best and the worst of it. [19:40] The foundation of the universe is love. The mind boggling patience and love that is poured from these other realms. [20:56] The alignment for Dena to found the Global Peace Initiative for Women with lessons from previous lives. Recollections from previous pre-patriarchal times. The contribution to create more gender balance. [27:31] Future life memories, or life blueprints, or likely scenarios, or potentialities. How we can tap into and create our future. [30:50] Exercise: what is left undone for you? [32:06] Most people are creating unconsciously; reacting to circumstances vs consciously creating. [32:38] The two reasons to reincarnate: karma, or service. (Reference “Life, Death and the Space Between” episode #231 “Being Ram Dass”.) [35:46] The complexity of karma. Process of learning, awakening, rectifying imbalances. Our own thought and behavior habits/patterns. Western misunderstanding of the concept of karma. [38:44] Dena's biggest takeaways... The power of love from the great teachers and the guidance we receive. The overwhelming outpouring of love from beings that we cannot see. [41:01] Dena's most significant lifetimes. The biggest moments of transformation. [42:33] A fully awakened person remembers all their lifetimes and history. Akashic records. [43:51] Many people have glimpses of past lives. Self-reflection plus meditation is a path toward remembering. We just need ask for help. [44:30] Dena answers Amy's speed round questions. THE GODFATHER OF GREEN: AN ECO-SPIRITUAL MEMOIR by Jerry Yudelson THE GODFATHER OF GREEN: AN ECO-SPIRITUAL MEMOIR shows one person finding his place over many years as an active participant in three major environmental movements, beginning with the first Earth Day in 1970, up to the present Climate Crisis. During that time, Jerry Yudelson actively studied meditation and mindfulness practices under the guidance of two powerful Indian spiritual masters. He struggles over many years to integrate these disparate worlds for the betterment of himself and the environment. Through stories, contemplations, poems and revealing insights, Jerry describes intense encounters with meditation masters, politicians, wives and lovers, activists, architects and engineers, bureaucrats and business leaders, as well as with his own deepest Self. Internationally known speaker and author Jerry Yudelson has written 14 books on green building, green homes, sustainable urbanism, building performance and water conservation. Jerry speaks and writes with passion, humor, facts, and a deep personal experience with green building going back to 1997. His favorite quote, from the original Whole Earth Catalog, is "we're as gods and might as well get good at it." The green building revolution offers a promise for dealing with nearly 50% of global carbon emissions that come from building operations, construction and products - that's why he writes about it. A licensed professional engineer, Jerry Yudelson is a LEED Fellow, a former president of the Green Building Initiative, and a former board member of the U.S. Green Building Council. He was the Research Scholar for Sustainability for the International Council of Shopping Centers, providing research and speaking services from 2007 through 2009. From 2001 to 2008, he trained more than 3500 people in the LEED green building rating system. His books include: The Godfather of Green: An Eco-Spiritual Memoir (2020); Reinventing Green Building (2016), The World's Greenest Buildings: Promise vs Performance in Sustainable Design (2013), Dry Run: Preventing the Next Urban Water Crisis (2010), Choosing Green: The Home Buyer’s Guide to Good Green Homes (2008), Greening Existing Buildings (2009) Sustainable Retail Development (2009), Green Building Trends: Europe (2009), The Green Building Revolution (2007), Green Building A to Z (2007), Marketing Green Buildings (2007), and Green Building through Integrated Design (2008). https://jerryyudelson.net/ https://www.amazon.com/Godfather-Green-Eco-Spiritual-Memoir/dp/1948018721/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1581051005&sr=8-1 http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/jyudelson.mp3

Dena Merriam's My Journey Through TimeMy Time is the story of how the events and people she has encountered in life served to awaken memories of past births, memories that help her to understand her current life and provide spiritual direction and guidance. As she remembered past teachers and loved ones, she realized that the most important message is the continuation of these relationships through time...through death and rebirth. The body may perish, but love continues, only to be reawakened at another point in time. We meet old friends again and again in different forms and situations to continue what was left unsaid and undone. Dena recounts explicit memories of at least seven previous births in as many countries, with their different cultures and religions. Themes emerge from the past that still shape her life today.

My Journey Through Time: A Spiritual Memoir of Life, Death, and Rebirth ~ Dena Merriam My Journey Through Time is a spiritual memoir that sheds light on the workings of karma— the law of cause and effect that creates one’s present circumstances and relationships—as we see it unfold through Dena’s vivid memories of her previous births. We travel back in time as Dena learns of a life in early 20th century Russia, ranging from the overthrow of the Czar through Nazi Germany; then it’s back further to a life in early 19th century America in the Deep South. With each past life, you can see the way in which it has impacted her present life, how it has stemmed from the end of the previous birth, and how it will influence her next life. In this two-part presentation, Dr. Mason will introduce participants to the genre and encourage the preparation of brief personal memoirs by the participants. Workshops will follow later in the month led by the Rev. Tracy Sprowls for those interested in working on their own personal spiritual memoir. The temptation while writing spiritual memoir is to focus only on the moment of transformation. This talk explores how the dark night of the soul is as important in spiritual memoir as the healing or resurrection experience. From a talk by Cynthia Rosi given at Columbus Writer's Conference at Columbus State Community College in the spring of 2017.
Welcome to the Restore Podcast episode 11 where it is our hearts' desire to help restore the vision, restore the mission, and restore the church through God's strength and power. I'm your host, Javier Diaz, and it is hard for me to believe that, at the release of this episode, we are less than two weeks away from the end of 2016 and the start of 2017. Ever since we began this podcast in February, it's been a learning experience for me getting into the podcasting world. Though I listen to many podcasts, it's a bit different to start working on one. Yet, it's been a blessing to talk with and learn from so many people. I thank all of you who take the time to listen and even give some feedback. Thank you, thank you, thank you for listening, subscribing, and sharing this podcast. Before I introduce this month's guest, I want to remind you of the upcoming Restore Conference happening January 30-31, 2017. God's healing grace is not only for the addicted, but also for the broken ones who love them." Throughout this year, we have told several stories of churches on their journey of restoration. Jasmina Agrillo Scherr knows about resilience. Her life has never been easy. As a child, she felt different from the get-go because she sensed and saw what others couldn't. Her mother - manic, depressed and irrational, wanted to take her to "head doctors." Jasmina suffered through illness while living with a mother who was "a walking time bomb." Her situation only got worse for her in adulthood; among other things she had a brain tumor that almost killed her and a heartbreaking divorce. Jasmina knows about resilience, but she also knows the joy of buoyancy and a life filled with spiritual blessings; a loving son and an adoring husband. She knows the beauty of connecting to the world beyond this reality, serving others, and being guided toward the light whenever at a crossroads. Jasmina Agrillo Scherr has walked the path and then held her hand out to others. Spiritual pilgrim, yogi mystic, meditation coach, brain recovery counselor, and spiritual healer, she has spent more than 25 years inspiring people the world over, teaching them how to access and use the power of their heart to impact consciousness, health, performance, creativity and relationships. Her new book, Mirror of My Soul, Sanctum of My Heart, is a spiritual memoir and inspiring treatise on how heart-resonance, intuition and resilience can get you past the tough times and into the thrive times. Today Jasmina is here to share her story and to provide the wisdom and inspiration to be in our hearts looking for our inner truth. Echoes in the Universe with author Leonard Goodwin Leonard Goodwin has lived through some of the most profoundly significant moments in United States history. He was in Washington, DC, when John F. Kennedy was inaugurated and when Martin Luther King gave his “I Have a Dream” speech. He was at the New York World's Fair when television was introduced and was in California for the 1989 earthquake. He vividly remembers a very different America - when gasoline, butter and nylon stockings were rationed - and he has seen the nation undergo dramatic spiritual, social and environmental changes. Goodwin's own faith was awakened mid-life when he experienced a near-death experience after a heart attack, changing him forever and inspiring him to embark on a spiritual journey of self-discovery. With Echoes in the Universe: A Spiritual Memoir, his unusual collection of narrative poems, Goodwin not only recounts the most important chapters of the United States' history in the eighty years since his birth, but also tells his own fascinating life story.
