It's a bonus episode! With the Australian Federal election pending this Saturday, we thought we'd break down what the major parties are offering when it comes to music and arts. In summary: Greens have good policy promises; Labor are promising to continue some of their current policies and have a good track record; and the Coalition are coming into this election without a recognised music and arts policy. We aren't trying to tell you how to vote, but we want to inform you on stuff that likely matters to you if you're listening to this podcast. Thanks for listening! Just please go easy on us if we sound weary in this one. After listening to us bang on about how little a lot of our commercial radio networks do for Australian music, ARIA and the PPCA have come through with a campaign urging updates to the Commercial Radio Code. Meanwhile, the same bods + a bunch of other Aus music heavy hitters have readied their pitch ahead of the upcoming federal election via Open Mic. This one goes off the rails a bit, but it's good fun! And we'd expect nothing less from Bootleg Rascal, who joined us for a chat.We start by discussing the cons of playing a New Years gig, and how the best of intentions can go out the window. They emphasise the importance of fun and spontaneity in their music-making, reflecting on how their artistic philosophy has shaped their work and live performances. Is having your music succeed on Tik Tok the only way to gain traction as an artist? New data says that - for the most part - it is. Tik Tok has just released its annual Music Impact Report, which is carried out in conjunction with music market researchers Luminate. The standout figures from their report tell us that nearly all the music that reached Billboard's global 200 last year also went viral on Tik Tok. So, what does this mean for artists and music in 2025? We do our best to answer that question and pose a few more of our own in this episode. They're meant to be two of the biggest weekend on the Australian music calendar - Triple J's Hottest 100 and Splendour in the Grass Festival. Yet both have served up disappointment for very different reasons. The Hottest 100 went off without a hitch over the weekend, though many couldn't help but notice some absentees from the annual countdown - Australian artists. This year's national poll served up the lowest Aussie artists and the equal lowest local songs ever. So, what went wrong for homegrown artists? We unpack the not-so-simple answer. Meanwhile, just days before the Hottest 100, organisers of Splendour in the Grass Festival announced that arguably Australia's biggest music festival would not be going ahead for the second year running. Is the end of Splendour? We think yes - at least as we know it. Check out the excellent post from Joe Hardy that we reference in this conversation here. Thanks for listening! In this slightly more coherent edition of the Music News, we introduce you to the mundane stories of our lives before diving into some more serious stuff. Funding for music therapy sessions for NDIS participants is set to be slashed under proposed changes from the federal government. We run the rule over that decision and question how the government failed to find an adequate "evidentiary standard" when it comes to music therapy's benefits. And we can't just sit back and watch one of the biggest recent stories in global music unfold without chiming in. So please, indulge us: Kendrick V Drake looks to be making its way into the courtroom after the latter filed two separate lawsuits in response to Kendrick Lamar's viral diss track 'Not Like Us'. Fletcher Kent sits down with us in this one right as he prepares to release his first new music in almost five years. For Fletcher, this break has been an absolutely necessary step for his evolution as a creator. Whilst his artist name has been tweaked, his sound has evolved, and his new music sits on a fresh streaming profile, what's abundantly clear from our conversation is that this is a case of evolution, not revolution.
