Tonsillectomies are one of the most common operations both today and historically, however, it has always been mired in controversy. In ancient times, this was touted as being either life-saving or completely unnecessary and continued to be a polarising topic into the twentieth century. An evidence based approach has helped to provide guidelines such as the Paradise criteria. However, there is always nuance and particular patient circumstances that play a role in deciding if surgical management is appropriate. We talk to one of Australia's foremost experts to help us navigate this topic. This is the story of Tonsillectomies. Our special guest: Dr Eric Levi is a triple-Fellowship trained Specialist Otolaryngologist (Ear Nose & Throat), Head & Neck Surgeon based in Melbourne, Australia. He has completed Fellowships in Head & Neck Surgery, Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery and Paediatric Otolaryngology.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode she relates what happened after her diagnosis, through surgery and recovery journey and explains where she is at now vocally and shares her thoughts and advice. Kelvin Kong is Australia's first Indigenous surgeon, Ear Nose and Throat Specialist. A Worimi man, he has spent much of his career dedicated to early intervention for middle ear disease. As a doctor, researcher and lecturer, Professor Kong is well versed on inequities in the health system, and says some simple medical interventions for ear disease in children can change their ability to learn and their lives. He just returned home from a gathering in Auckland of 50 surgeons and surgical trainees of Maori, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent. He was a keynote speaker at the Indigenous Hui, organised by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.

Today my guest is Julie McCrossin, a Broadcaster and Cancer Ambassador. In this episode, Julie reflects on her studies in arts, education and law, and experiences working in educational theatre with disadvantaged and isolated schools. Julie reflects on her role as a national radio broadcaster, that is, talking for a living, getting other people talking, and helping them to discuss a range of important and complex topics. We also chat about Julie's experiences as a cancer patient, and how her instinctive and self-directed response to a persistent sore throat led to a visit to an Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist, with diagnosis and treatment of stage four, HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer (that is, tonsils, tongue and throat) about ten years ago. Julie offers insights into the diagnosis, treatment, and recovery from cancer including the psychological impacts, side effects, and the significance of social support. We discuss the impact of human connection —with friends, family, fellow patients, and medical practitioners—and the profound human energy that's unleashed when a few people gather for a common purpose, such as when support group members meet. Julie also shares insights into health literacy, her role as a cancer ambassador and her collaborations with medical practitioners. We explore the value of personal stories and their role in illustrating lived experiences, educating the public and improving healthcare systems. Finally, Julie offers very practical advice related to trusting your instincts, getting a second opinion, and following up with reliable information online. Julie offers comfort, optimism, hope and empathy. This week on Womanity-Women in Unity Dr. Amaleya Goneos-Malka talks to Dr. Shahpar Motakef, who is the Clinical Head of the Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) unit at Charlotte Maxete Academic Hospital. She lectures at the University of the Witwatersrand in the Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) department and is an ENT specialist at Fourways Life hospital and is a member of the Rhinoplasty Society. We note that there is still an underrepresentation of female doctors to male doctors, but gender transformation is taking place. For Example Dr Motekef was the first woman to study ENT at Wits and during the early part of her career there were only four female ENTs in South Africa. However, today in her hospital the majority of registrars are women. To get more women into medicine starts early, in high school, encouraging girls to shine, to be ambitious and not supress their passions. Medicine is a hard field and sometimes women are put off from pursuing it because of the misconception that it is impossible to feel they are not able to pursue a challenging career and also have a family. Dr Motekef believes that with planning and discipline both are possible but should be approached through staging and patience. Women can have everything, just not necessarily at the same time. Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) services have a two week window in which they must see people presenting with symptoms which might indicate cancer. The pressure on these services has grown hugely since the pandemic and now we need novel approaches to help reduce the backlog and improve the experience for patients. In this episode of our series on papers from the International Journal of Language and Communication Disorders we chat with Louise Occomore-Kent, speech and language therapist (SLT), about ways in which SLTs might support with increased pressure on Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) pathway services. Louise, and fellow researchers, Ellie Hatch and Madeline Cruice, explored SLTs' views of extending their role to work with patients referred on the ENT two week wait pathway, to speed up diagnosis for those who are found to have cancer and to provide a pathway for the majority who do not have cancer, but still have issues which need to be addressed. The paper is:Scoping opinion: Speech and language therapists' views on extending their role to the urgent ear, nose and throat pathway.Louise C.
