Dive deep into the complexities of faith, identity, and personal growth in this transformative episode of "The Midlife Revolution." In this episode, I explore my journey of leaving the Mormon Church after decades of membership, focusing on a significant talk by Elder Dallin H. Oaks from October 2019. This discussion centers on his views on women's roles and the church's stance towards the LGBTQ community, highlighting the gap between the church's inclusive rhetoric and its exclusionary policies.Listen as I dissect the implications of these teachings on personal lives, especially for women over 40 who are reevaluating their faith and seeking authenticity in their spiritual journey.Learn how small, positive changes can lead to profound life improvements, using my own experience as a testament to the power of personal revolution at midlife.Explore the dissonance between 'all are welcome' statements and the reality of church policies that bar full participation for the LGBTQ community. This episode is not just about critique; it's a beacon for those navigating their way out of high control environments, whether religious, familial, or otherwise. “Often, we women don't realize that the power through which we accomplish ‘much good' in our callings and in our homes is an expression of priesthood power. As a matter of fact, all the good that is done in the world is done through God's power. . . . Knowing that women have access to that priesthood power strengthens us to be able to do what is asked in whatever responsibilities or assignments are ours.” Jean B. Bingham, “Endowed with Power” (Brigham Young University Women's Conference, May 2019) In the talk “The Keys and Authority of the Priesthood,” Elder Dallin H. Oaks states, “We are not accustomed to speaking of women having authority of the priesthood in their Church callings, but what other authority can it be?” Reyna Aburto (former 2nd Counselor in the General Relief Society Presidency, Institute teacher) Kathryn Davis (Institute teacher and host of the Magnify Podcast from Deseret Book) and Stephanie Kelly (Institute teacher), all current teachers at the Utah Valley Institute, discuss the power of the priesthood and how it applies to both men and women. Using quotes from current prophets and church leaders, these sisters will open your eyes to the strength and power God gives to all of His children who make and keep covenants with Him. The willingness to make sacrifices for others, to be able to wait for a reward, the devotion to work; for me, these are everlasting values. The joy of working together and sharing what was being produced turned work into a joyful liturgy, not a punishment. We all knew what was being done in the fields, in the garden, in the pastures, at home; planting, cultivating, raising children and helping parents. There was no wealth, but we were happy. It is common in the church to stand and testify that we KNOW the Church is True. But what does that really mean? Is it enough that our children know the church is true or is there something more that we are striving for? In the October 2000 General Conference, Elder Dallin H. Oaks said this, “ It is not enough for us to be convinced of the gospel; we must act and think so that we are converted by it. In contrast to the institutions of the world, which teach us to know something, the gospel of Jesus Christ challenges us to become something…. The gospel of Jesus Christ is a plan that shows us how to become what our Heavenly father desires us to become.” (The Challenge to Become, Oct. 2000 Conference) In this episode, we talk about the importance of focusing on who we are BECOMING rather than what knowledge we are obtaining. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/myteachingmatters/message

Motherhood always seemed non-negotiable for Bethany Denton. Her upbringing in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints certainly instilled this. Mormons believe in what's called a “premortal existence,” a place up in heaven where the eternal souls eagerly wait their turn to be born on Earth so they can prove their faith to Heavenly Father, and then return to glory in the afterlife. For Mormons, life on Earth is just a short test, an opportunity to practice free agency and serve God's will. That's why leaders of the LDS Church like Elder Dallin H. Oaks are concerned about falling birth rates among members of the church. They believe that “one of the most serious abuses of children is to deny them birth.”This belief in pre-life gives additional weight to God's commandment to “be fruitful and multiply.” It's about more than maintaining the populations; it's about giving other children of God a chance to live. As an adult, Bethany lost her faith in the LDS Church. She stopped believing that her primary purpose in life was to be a mother, and for the first time, she started to seriously consider what her life would be without children.
