Giles Fraser and guests hear from authors of detective fiction, Kate Charles and Martin Edwards, on the subtle ways they weave faith into the crime puzzles in their novels. Why is religious detective fiction so popular in our increasingly secular society? Did the detective replace the priest as the one who looked into the mysteries of life and battled with good and evil? Why do religion and detective fiction share so many noble pursuits in common? And, what is it about the detective genre that lends itself to such deep ethical and spiritual questions? To explore Giles is joined by: James Runcie, author of numerous books, including The Grantchester Mysteries, a series of six detective novels featuring the clerical detective Sidney Chambers. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and a member of both the Crime Writer's Association and The Detection Club.Ausma Khan, author of the Blackwater Falls crime series and the founder of the Muslim Writers Index. Dror Mishani the author of the Avraham Avraham detective series that has been turned into a TV series by David E. Kelley. He is a literary scholar, specialising in the history of crime fiction, and the head of the creative writing program at Tel Aviv University.Producer: Alexa Good Assistant Producer: Linda Walker Editor: Tim Pemberton

This is an updated replay of my amazing chat with #1 New York Times bestselling author and screenwriter-producer Dennis Lehane. His latest novel, Small Mercies, was an instant NY Times Bestseller named an Amazon Editors' pick for Best Books 2023. Stephen King said of the book “Small Mercies is thought-provoking, engaging, enraging, and can't-put-it-down entertainment.” Enjoy! New York Times bestselling author and screenwriter-producer, Dennis Lehane, spoke to me about what he learned from Clint Eastwood, working on "Mr. Mercedes" with David E. Kelley, and his new Apple TV+ show "Black Bird." Dennis Lehane is the bestselling author of 13 novels including four adapted into films of the same name: 2003's Academy Award-winning film Mystic River, directed by Clint Eastwood; 2007's Gone Baby Gone; 2010's Shutter Island directed by Martin Scorsese, and 2016's Live by Night directed by Ben Affleck. His latest is the limited Apple TV+ series, Black Bird, described as a "...fascinating, ripped-from-the headlines story [and] true-crime drama..." based on the 2010 memoir by James Keene and Hillel Levin, “In With The Devil: A Fallen Hero, A Serial Killer, and A Dangerous Bargain for Redemption." "Jimmy Keene (Taron Egerton), cuts a deal with the FBI to enter maximum-security prison for the criminally insane and befriend a suspected serial killer, Larry Hall (Paul Walter Hauser)." Black Bird premieres globally with the first two episodes on Friday, July 8, followed by one new episode weekly every Friday. Lehane was a staff writer on the acclaimed HBO series "The Wire" and also worked as a writer-producer on HBO's "Boardwalk Empire" the Netflix series, "Bloodline," and a writer and producer on the television adaptation of Stephen King's "Mr. Mercedes." Pakula's smart, understated legal thriller Presumed Innocent featuring Harrison Ford in one of his finest performances. Taut, richly detailed, and featuring a considerable bench of "that guy" character actors (including John Spencer, Joe Grifasi, and Brian Dennehy), the film rises above the usual theatrics of the Grisham-era Hollywood legal drama with a crackerjack, densely-packed script that rewards upon repeat viewings while never sacrificing its immediacy. We discuss Harrison Ford in the early 90s, his contemporaneous swings into dramatic territory, and the considered decisions to separate the film's protagonist Rusty Sabich from audience's familiarity with the Harrison Ford action-hero brand. Then, we look at the film's complex narrative features (adapted from a book by lawyer-turned-novelist Scott Turrow) and how the film weaves in its rich details with respect for its audience's ability to connect the dots. Jo and Rob prepare for the trial to recap the fifth and sixth episodes of ‘Presumed Innocent.' They open by discussing whether the series is suffering from the David E. Kelley red herring problem, their leading whodunnit theories, and whether Rusty is too unlikable as the story's protagonist (2:07). Along the way, they talk about the various dream sequences throughout the series and how they're being utilized (23:22). Later, they read through a couple of listener emails (and sneak in a few takes on ‘The Bear' Season 3!) (33:36). Welcome to TV Break, where Pop Break's Podcasts Editor Alex Marcus is joined by editor-in-chief Bill Bodkin, and TV Columnist Josh Sarnecky to talk about the happenings in television. Here's the format of the show: The Best Thing I Saw on TV Last Month – Alex, Bill, & Josh talk about a show/episode/event they liked from the last month including HBO's House of the Dragon S2, Disney Plus's The Acolyte S1, Hulu's The Bear, and Netflix's Ripley. News Break – Alex, Bill, and Josh react to breaking news that Skydance has finally completed its long awaited merger with Paramount Global. Streaming Wars – Alex, Bill, & Josh pick a streamer they think “won the month” based on new shows airing/upcoming shows announced etc. Josh gives the nod to Netflix thanks to their conversation starting films like Hit Man, Axel F, Atlas, and Under Paris and their hit series like Bridgerton (plus news that they will be creating their own amusement experience). Bill passed over Netflix to give props to MAX after they debuted their trailer for The Penguin, converted some of their event series into HBO originals, announced Damon Lindeloff will be writing their Green Lantern series, and earned major ratings with the NBA Finals and House of the Dragon S2. Meanwhile, Alex spoke up for Tubi a month after they beat Disney Plus in total viewers for second behind Netflix, and scored a ton of good press in the process. New Series Spotlight – This month, they reviewed Presumed Innocent, Apple TV Plus's adaptation of the 1990 Harrison Ford feature film and the 1987 best selling novel by lawyer turned novelist Scott Turow. The series was created by David E Kelley and stars Jake Gyllenhaal, as a local prosecutor accused of murdering his fellow ADA, played in flashbacks by Renate Reinsve, who he happened to be having an affair with at the time of her death. Ruth Negga, O-T Fagbenle, Peter Sarsgaard, and real life husband and wife Bill Camp and Elizabeth Marvel also star.

How to Be Abe Lincoln: Seven Steps to Leading a Legendary Life by Jonathan Shapiro https://amzn.to/3RDzNJ6 More than at any time in American history, except perhaps Abe Lincoln's own, we need his help. And not just to inspire us. Over sixty-thousand books have been written about him, and most give us the heroic Lincoln. What we need now is a book that gives us the practical Lincoln. This is that book. It shows us how to survive our dangerously fractious age, one that is too often unmoored from truth, ignorant of facts, and unwilling to do the hard work of becoming better. It is written for those who don't just admire Lincoln but want to emulate his rational, practical approach to law, love, leadership, and life. It identifies the seven steps that made Abe Lincoln legendary and teaches you how to follow them. Written in the accessible, humorous style of Shapiro's previous books and television shows, the book is part history and biography, part philosophy, part memoir, part James Spader rant, and like Lincoln himself, a true original. Above all, it is great storytelling, using narrative to teach and inspire. About the author Jonathan Shapiro has spent the last 16 years writing and producing some of television's most iconic shows, including The Blacklist, The Practice, Life and Boston Legal. An Emmy, Peabody, and Humanitas Awards winner, he and David E. Kelley are the creators and executive producers of Trial, a legal thriller set to air on Amazon in 2016. In addition to his work in television, he is also the author of two recent books: the memoir "Liars, Lawyers, and the Art of Storytelling" (ABA Publishing) and the novel "Deadly Force" (Ankerwycke Press). For the last two years, he was Of Counsel for litigation at the Kirkland & Ellis law firm. Prior to writing for television, Jonathan spent a decade as a federal prosecutor and as an adjunct law professor at Loyola Law School and the University of Southern California's Gould School of Law. He is a member and the former chairman of the California Commission on Government Economy and Efficiency, as well as the founder and director of the Public Counsel Emergency for Torture Victims. He is a graduate of Harvard University, a Rhodes Scholar at Oriel College, Oxford University, and received his law degree from the University of California, Berkeley.
Club soda with lemonScott talks about the choices he made in leaving a Stanford Fellowship in creative writing to enroll at Harvard Law School where Alan Dershowitz was a young professor, the 1977 publication of his nonfiction book about law school, ONE L, his casework as an Assistant US Attorney in Chicago, the earth-shaking success of his 1987 fiction debut, PRESUMED INNOCENT, and thereafter the variety of strange reactions he got from judges, juries and opposing counsels when he entered the courtroom to litigate cases while already a bonafide literary star, his thoughts on the differences between novel and film writing, and the reboot of PRESUMED INNOCENT on Apple with David E. Kelley and JJ Abrams.

What's wrong with Larry Abbot? The radio star is having bouts of fear, perhaps a remnant of childhood trauma. Otherwise, everything seems to be swell: he's engaged to be married to his scene partner, the delightful Vickie Pearle. But the radio show, hosted by the Manhattan Mystery Theater and lead sponsor Ralston-Purina are concerned about Larry's mental health, so they've hired Larry's Uncle Paul, a psychiatrist. to employ a radical cure that will rid Larry of his fears in no more than 36 hours. And off go Larry and Vickie to Larry's ancestral stomping grounds, a palatial estate that bears a striking resemblance to, well, let's just say we've seen it before. Just like the Abbot family butler, Pfister, and the maid, the diminutive Rachel – there's something familiar about them as well. What's new are the cast of characters that assemble at the estate for Larry and Vickie's wedding – Larry's cousins Charles, Nora, Susan, and Francis Jr., all of whom seem to have ulterior motives of one kind of another, some of which may include death or inheriting the fortune of the family matriarch, Aunt Kate. Will Larry and Vickie make it through the next couple days intact? Will we, the audience, figure out what's really going on? Maybe so, but we'll have to sit through all 82 minutes of this film to find out. Lead Balloon - Public Relations, Marketing and Strategic Communications Disaster Stories
Every professional communicator has had a day that seems like it came straight out of a TV sitcom. For Rob Davis and John R. Montgomery, working at the Chicago ad firm Leo Burnett in the early 2000's, it was a regular occurrence. In fact, the stories from their time there were so singular, that when they shot a pilot and pitched it to Hollywood, it was picked up and run as a CBS sitcom starring Robin Williams and Sarah Michelle Gellar. From wacky hijinks to high-stakes drama, unbelievable coincidences to larger-than-life personalities, "The Crazy Ones" sourced its comedy from real-life agency anecdotes, amplified by the creative genius of its all-star cast and famed executive producer David E. Kelley. And Rob and John found themselves on a wild Hollywood ride that would alter the course of both their careers. In this episode, they tell us what it took to get the project off the ground, what it was like repackaging their professional lives as TV scripts, and how they pitched a new approach to brand integration on television that was years ahead of its time.
