"One Night Only" promises two things: 1. Single people can only have sex one night out of the year and 2. It won't make any god damn sense. The Boys are here to break down the new movie starring Callum Turner and Monica Barbaro, which manages to provide as many questions as it does answers. Somehow, a dissection of psoriasis, Pete Davidson and pizza awaits! Pop, pop!

We're in a bit of an in-between space as the summer blockbusters are winding down but fall festival season hasn't quite begun. But we've always got thoughts on whatever the latest movies are. Here's what we reviewed this week on our Breakfast All Day podcast: ONE NIGHT ONLY. It's "The Purge," but for sex. People can only do it once a year over a 12-hour period for ... reasons? We have lots of questions about this film's internal logic, as well as its general purpose. Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner star. In theaters. TONY. Dominic Sessa stars as a young Anthony Bourdain, making mistakes and pissing people off during the summer of 1975 in Provincetown, Mass. Directed by Matt Johnson, who also made "Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie" this year. This one, we loved. In limited release now before opening nationwide Aug. 21. MOVIE NEWS LIVE! Lots to discuss as always, including the record-breaking box office of "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," the trailer for "Primetime" starring Robert Pattinson, Ariana Grande taking a break from performing, and more. For this week's main podcast review, Ema Sasic, Dan Bayer, Megan Lachinski, and Will Mavity join me to review and discuss the sex purge romantic comedy film "One Night Only," starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Maya Hawke, Julia Fox, King Princess, Ziwe, Ben Marshall, Ella Loudon, Molly Ringwald & Levar Burton. The film follows two attractive single people on the one night of the year when premarital sex is no longer outlawed, but does it invite more questions with its central premise than escapist fun? What did we think of it? Please tune in either on video or audio only as we discuss the film's story, its performances, humor, politics (or lack thereof), its awards season chances, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. One Night Only is set in an alternate universe where premarital sex has been outlawed, except for one 12-hour window a year. On today's show, Amanda is joined by her Jam Session co-host and romantic comedy expert Juliet Litman to discuss a movie referenced as "The Purge, but for sex,” otherwise known as ‘One Night Only,' starring Callum Turner and Monica Barbaro. They break down why it's an incredibly charming movie that almost works, mainly because it has all of the essential “rom-com” tropes nailed down, but has an insurmountable premise. Later, they theorize why romantic comedies have been dying as a genre and form their legally binding 21st century romantic comedy canon. (0:00) Intro (0:49) Juliet Litman joins the show! The high concept rom com "One Night Only" has an original premise, but sketchy execution. In a future where premarital sex is outlawed, one night a year is left open for singles to hook up. Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner play singles looking for a brief encounter, but circumstances keep throwing them together and pulling them apart. There are a few clever moments but "One Night Only" can never overcome its inherent phoniness. The twisted and blood-soaked horror comedy "Ice Cream Man" is morally repugnant. But for Spat Pack filmmaker Eli Roth, the king of ‘torture porn,' that's kinda the point. The treats served up by a mysterious vendor in a small town turns the kids into homicidal zombies. The crazed and foul-mouthed kids DO hideous things they're not nearly old enough to SEE on the big screen and an army of makeup artists create the grisly mayhem. “Ice Cream Man” lands a few twisted laughs, but you may feel like taking a shower afterward. The Apple TV sports comedy series "Ted Lasso" starring KC favorite son Jason Sudeikis is back for season four. The first episode which was shot here in town highlights several local landmarks. Ted's former British employers come to town to try to persuade him to return to England and coach a women's soccer team. Fans of the series know exactly what kind of cheeky humor to expect, and season four serves it up in welcome fashion. Just seeing award-winning British actress Hannah Waddingham become obsessed with Gates BBQ sauce is reason enough to tune in. The documentary "Cookie Queens" focuses on four girls undergoing the joys and pressures of Girl Scout cookie sales season. It's sweet but lighter than a thin mint.
Louis and Nina delve into the horny, freaky “Wicker” movie trailer. Then, the two review Ariana Grande's new album “petal” and discuss the surrounding controversy. Plus, Academy Award nominated actress Monica Barbaro stops by to chat about her new movie “One Night Only.”

Lucy Fenwick Elliott talks to director Bart Layton about his new film, Crime 101. Set against the sun-bleached grit of Los Angeles, Crime 101 weaves the tale of an elusive jewel thief (Chris Hemsworth) whose string of heists along the 101 freeway have mystified police. When he eyes the score of a lifetime, his path crosses that of a disillusioned insurance broker (Halle Berry) who is facing her own crossroads. Convinced he has found a pattern, a relentless detective (Mark Ruffalo) is closing in, raising the stakes even higher. As the heist approaches, the line between hunter and hunted begins to blur, and all three are faced with life-defining choices–and the realization that there can be no turning back. Adapted from Don Winslow's acclaimed novella of the same name, the film is written and directed by Bart Layton (American Animals, The Imposter). Barry Keoghan, Monica Barbaro, Corey Hawkins, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Nick Nolte round out the cast. Subscribe on Apple Podcasts. Follow us on Spotify. Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of February 13, 2026. For this Valentine's/President's Day weekend there are movie options for everyone. First up is the "adaptation" of the classic novel "Wuthering Heights" from Academy Award-winning screenwriter/director Emerald Fennell and starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi. This is likely to be enjoyed more by the young adult crowd than the fans of the original book. Heed the content rating on this one if you were thinking of sending your teens to see it. For those looking for action we have the movie "Crime 101" starring Chris Hemsworth, Halle Berry, Mark Ruffalo, Barry Keoghan, and Monica Barbaro. Pretty decent crime thriller that was just a bit too long. Finally, something for the whole family is "GOAT," an animated movie that is kind of like what if Zootopia had a sports league. Good voice cast (including Steph Curry as a giraffe) that was fun and interesting and, yes, somewhat cliched. The brains behind Fan Effect are connoisseurs of categories surpassing nerdy with a goal to publish a weekly "What to Watch on the Weekend" minisode taken from KSL-TV's Friday segment, and two deep-dives a month on shows, creative works, artists, local events, and other fandom topics. Based in the beautiful Beehive State, Fan Effect celebrates Utah's unique fan culture as it has been declared The Nerdiest State in America by TIME, and is hosted by KSL Movie Show's Andy Farnsworth and Deseret News / KSL Podcasts' KellieAnn Halvorsen. Crime 101 - based on a novella by Don Winslow - lands in cinemas this weekend. It's a crime saga but a surprisingly focused chaaracter drama, with interconeecting threads that lead to quite the convergence in the third act of this movie. This film is being adapted by Bart Layton, who made the critically acclaimed American Animals which I was also a big fan of. Unlike that though, he's now been given a big Hollywood production with big name movie stars and a much, much bigger budget. Does Crime 101 live up to his previously acclaimed work? Find out in this review!Crime 101:Directed by: Bart LaytonScreenplay by: Bart LaytonBased on the novella by: Don WinslowProduced by: Tim Bevan, Dimitri Doganis, Eric Fellner, Benjamin Grayson, Chris Hemsworth, Bart Layton, Shane Salerno, Derin SchlesingerExecutive Producers: Joely Fether, Amelia Granger, Peter Straughan, Bergen SwansonMusic by: Blanck MassDirector of Photography: Erik Alexander WilsonEdited by: Julian Hart, Jacob Secher SchulsingerCasting by: Avy KaufmanProduction Design by: Scott DouganCostume Design by: Jenny EaganCast: Chris Hemsworth, Halle Berry, Mark Ruffalo, Barry Keoghan, Monica Barbaro, Corey HawkinsSynopsis: An elusive thief, eyeing his final score, encounters a disillusioned insurance broker at her own crossroads. As their paths intertwine, a relentless detective trails them hoping to thwart the multi-million dollar heist they are planning.
"Crime 101" is a slick and engaging thriller featuring Chris Hemsworth, Halle Berry, and Mark Ruffalo. Hemsworth portrays a jewel thief who is emotionally conflicted and determined to complete one final heist. Guided by a personal code of ethics, his character refuses to harm anyone and targets only insurance companies with his schemes. The film's impressive supporting cast includes Barry Keoghan, Monica Barbaro and Nick Nolte who all contribute to the film's strong ensemble dynamic. Bart Layton, a British documentary filmmaker, brings surprisingly taut and effective direction, allowing "Crime 101" to remain engaging even when the plot stretches believability. “Crime 101” is an entertaining action throwback. The animated sports comedy "Goat" is from producer Steph Curry, who also lends his voice to one of the characters. The story centers on a young goat who dreams of competing in "Roarball," an intense and dangerous version of full-contact basketball. The film boasts a talented voice cast, including Caleb McGlaughlin from “Stranger Things,” David Harbour, Jennifer Hudson, Jelly Roll, and Gabrielle Union. "Goat" is a predictable, but family-friendly bit of escapism. "Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die" is a high-concept, sci-fi comedy that combines the time-loop antics of "Groundhog Day" with the energy of "Terminator." Sam Rockwell stars as a time traveler who repeatedly journeys back from the future, attempting to save humanity from the impending threat of artificial intelligence. Director Gore Verbinski seems to draw inspiration from the eccentric style of the Oscar-winning “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” The result is a smart and wildly imaginative film, even if it sometimes struggles with pacing and knowing when to wrap things up.
"Crime 101" is a crime thriller film written and directed by Bart Layton. It is based on the 2020 novella of the same name by Don Winslow. The film stars Chris Hemsworth as jewel thief Mike Davis, whose heists along the 101 freeway have left the police baffled. When Mike sets his sights on the ultimate score, his plans intersect with those of insurance broker Sharon Colvin, played by Halle Berry. Detective Lou Lubesnick, played by Mark Ruffalo, believes he has cracked Mike's pattern and is determined to bring him down before the next job. The film also stars Barry Keoghan, Monica Barbaro, Corey Hawkins, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Nick Nolte. Layton was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about his work and experience making the film, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which will open in theaters on February 13th from Amazon MGM Studios. Thank you, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... There's a particular kind of confidence required to make a modern Los Angeles heist movie without flinching at the shadow of “Heat.” It's the cinematic elephant in the room, the reference point that inevitably looms over any story involving meticulous thieves, dogged cops, and asphalt‑level tension. With “Crime 101,” filmmaker Bart Layton acknowledges that lineage without trying to wrestle it. Instead, he builds something adjacent: a grounded, contemporary crime film that uses the genre as a delivery system for deeper questions about identity, status, and obsession.Based on the novella by Don Winslow, “Crime 101” follows a precise, disciplined jewel thief (played by Chris Hemsworth) whose carefully calibrated life begins to fracture as an obsessive LAPD detective (played by Mark Ruffalo) closes in. Sound familiar "Heat" fans? Luckily, we also have other stories running parallel, like Halle Berry as Sharon, a woman boxed in by institutional disrespect and professional diminishment, slowly realizing that the systems she has played by were never designed to reward her. The ensemble is stacked with Barry Keoghan, Monica Barbaro, Corey Hawkins, Nick Nolte, and more, but the film's real engine is tone: tense, patient, and uninterested in clean moral answers.READ MORE: ‘Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie': Matt Johnson & Jay McCarrol On Time Travel, Friendship, The Show's 3rd Season, & Filming Without Permits [The Discourse Podcast]Joining The Discourse for two separate interviews, Layton, Hemsworth, and Berry dug into how “Crime 101” consciously avoids Hollywood shorthand while still delivering a propulsive, white‑knuckle ride.
