The Tampa Bay Rays played a sloppy game on Tuesday evening against the fourth-place Boston Red Sox. Two different leads were squandered as the Rays jumped to a 3-0 lead, then a 5-2 lead and saw both disappear. Vidal Bruján and Brandon Lowe were not at their sharpest with the glove but it was Vidal who seemed more shaky as it was not only one play that saw him affect the outcome negatively. The tie remained all the way onto extra innings where Erasmo Ramirez let in a run (ghost runner). After a Yandy Diaz walk to start the bottom of the 11th inning, Brandon Lowe smacked a three-run moonshot to put the Rays over the top. The Nationals skid hit four games after 6-2 loss to Arizona on Wednesday evening. Al & Mark have no choice but to update the latest on the sorry state of affairs with the pitching staff. The day began with Erasmo Ramirez getting DFA'd and ended with Jordan Weems allowing a pair of runs in the 9th inning. (10:10) Patrick Corbin technically tossed a quality start despite allowing 3 runs right off the bat and 11 hits in total. Through an odd quirk in the schedule, it was his first outing at night in almost two months. (19:10) The offense only mustered one extra base hit and it came from Lane Thomas; who also recorded another outfield assist. Make sure you listen to this segment for a very unexpected Alfonso Soriano stat. Joey Meneses had a pair of singles; which elevated his average to .305. The Nationals held an early lead but behind poor pitching they ended up losing 10-5 to visiting Arizona. Mark & Al start with a familiar refrain the struggling bullpen. Erasmo Ramirez inherited a 4-3 lead when he took the mound in the 5th inning, but it quickly became a 6-4 Diamondbacks edge. Ramirez last year was the Nationals Pitcher of the Year, but so far this season his ERA is at 6.33. (12:00) It was another Jake Irvin outing that did not inspire confidence and it included him committing an error. Irvin's stellar start in San Francisco is increasingly becoming a distant memory as his WHIP is now at 1.68. Will he keep his rotation spot? (19:40) The offense scored all five of its runs via home runs as Stone Garrett crushed an early Grand Slam and Lane Thomas slugged his 9th HR of the season. Victor Robles remains on the IL, but how does the game of musical chairs look in the outfield between Garrett, Alex Call, and Corey Dickerson for Robles returns? Learn more about your ad choices. Juan Soto returned for to D.C. for the 2nd time since being dealt last August. The Padres defeated the Nats 7-4 to open up the 3 game series as Soto homered and had three hits on the evening. Mark & Al discuss the warm reception by the crowd towards Soto and how his exit still feels fresh; unlike other former Washington stars that are playing elsewhere. (8:50) MacKenzie Gore, part of last year's big trade, struggled against Soto and the San Diego lineup as he did not last five innings in the no decision. Gore threw a 99 MPH fastball to begin the game against his former team, but did issue four walks on the evening. Gore threw 103 pitches; which matches his pattern of high pitch counts so far this season. (19:00) CJ Abrams, another player involved in the Soto trade, slugged his 5th homer of the season that brought the Nats back into the game. (22:10) Davey Martinez gave the ball to Erasmo Ramirez instead of Mason Thompson with the game tied. It did not work out well as Ramirez allowed four runs and Mark explains what went into the decision. Chad Kuhl later came in for mop up duty, his first action since returning from the IL. (30:00) Encouraging news from the Farm as Cole Henry will be promoted from Fredericksburg to Wilmington for his next start. The Nationals were six outs away from a series sweep, but the Mets got to Mason Thompson in the bottom of the 8th and New York prevailed 9-8. Mark & Al start with the top of the 8th where the Nats turned a 7-3 deficit into a brief 8-7 edge as CJ Abrams hit his first career Grand Slam. Does this qualify as a "Good Loss" considering the circumstances? (07:00) Leadoff hitter Alex Call also homered for Washington and Al points out the positive contributions from Call this season in that role. (14:15) Jeter Downs yet again did not play despite being on the Major League roster for the past few weeks. Mark gives an explanation as to all the factors that have led to his extended idle stretch. (22:45) As the final score indicates, it was not a banner pitching evening for the organization. Trevor Williams gave up nine hits in only five innings of work and allowed plenty of contact. Erasmo Ramirez also struggled as he ceded a trio of runs in only one inning of work and has not pitched as well this year as in 2022. (12:00) Victor Robles was positioned in right CF as opposed to straightaway CF on Elias Diaz's RBI double to trim the lead to 6-5. Mark explains all the "Inside Baseball" that went into Robles defensive positioning during that crucial at-bat in the bottom of the 6th. (17:00) Meanwhile Robles lifted his average up to .387 so far on the young season and a RBI single on Sunday. Where do you currently stand on Vic? (23:30) Alex Call has drawn eight walks this season and surprisingly made a case to be the team's leadoff hitter. Call was acquired in the middle of last season after being placed on waivers by Cleveland. (28:00) Chad Kuhl had an eventful 1st inning, but came out unscathed. They rank the in-house options and discuss the futures of young players like Marco Gonzales and Andrew Moore, and John briefly forgets about the existence of one Erasmo Ramirez. They also cast an eye to the free-agency options and what type of pitcher the Mariners might be targeting and who said Shohei Ohtani? That was you, you said that, but okay, if you insist we talk about him...Kate talks about what non-baseball-question she’d like to ask Shohei Ohtani, which would be challenging as his English is limited and her Japanese, nonexistent. After a brief break, listener questions are answered that touch on topics ranging from a Yonder Alonso deal (John does not cry YONNNNNDEERRRR on the podcast, be not afraid) to who should start for the Mariners in a playoff scenario to how to break the Trident Curse.
