During President Donald Trump's first week of his second term, he signed an executive order that paused the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program. Later, the White House froze all federal funding that goes to organizations who welcome and support refugees coming into the U.S. But last week, a federal judge in Seattle blocked Trump's efforts to suspend the system for resettling refugees. The judge ruled that while the president has broad authority over who comes into the country, he cannot cancel the law Congress passed to establish the program. However, the Justice Department said it would consider a quick appeal, saying Trump's actions are well within his authority. MPR News host Angela Davis and her guests talk about the federal refugee program and how the Trump administration directives are affecting refugee resettlement efforts in Minnesota.Guests:Micaela Schuneman is the senior director of immigration and refugee services for the International Institute of Minnesota — a social service agency that offers refugee, immigration and citizenship services.Eric Schwartz is a professor and chair of the global policy area and former dean of the Hubert H. From April 9, 2016: This week on the podcast, we welcome Eric Schwartz, the Dean of the Hubert H. Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota. Schwartz previously served as U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees, and Migration. In our conversation, he sketches the key aspects of U.S. refugee policy, explaining how it both protects the security of the United States and at times undermines its ability to accept refugees. Schwartz, who believes the United States has an interest in alleviating the Syrian refugee crisis, outlines what a coherent refugee policy would look like, and argues that the reforms must go beyond simply accepting more refugees. To receive ad-free podcasts, become a Lawfare Material Supporter at www.patreon.com/lawfare. This Week's Guest: Eric SchwartzEver found yourself at the dinner table, negotiating with a pint-sized dictator who insists that peas must never, under any circumstance, touch the mashed potatoes? Parenting is full of these hilarious, eyebrow-raising moments, and we're peeling back the curtain on all of them in The Parents Lounge. With the ever-charismatic Eric Schwartz dropping by to discuss his comedy special "Delivery," we're intertwining the laughs with an examination of the generational shifts in parenting and the wild escapades that come with stand-up comedy. From the practical magic of "Ghostbusters" in potty training to the dreams of extravagant wealth, join us for a conversation that's as varied as a child's lunch plate.Have you ever pondered the social harmony of Canada or the alluring simplicity of Japanese culture? Our latest episode isn't just about the trials of parenting—we're also diving into the global melting pot, contrasting the values of Eastern and Western societies and how they shape our perspectives on community and capitalism. As we swap stories about our past luxury splurges and dreams of wealth, it's clear that our material desires are as diversified as our comedic tastes. But whether we're dreaming of hiring personal trainers or indulging in designer gear, we conclude that life's greatest riches often come in the form of travel and the peace of mind that financial security can bring.Capping off with a lighter touch, we dish on the festive frenzy surrounding advent calendars and the scarcity of popular toys during the holiday season. And because what's parenting without a little performance, we treat you to a sneak preview of a Ryan Gosling impression and discuss the quirks of voice acting. From musings on speech patterns to the satirical sharpness of entertainment, our show is a mosaic of humor and humanity. So, ready your earbuds, and let's raise a glass (or a sippy cup) to the incredible, laugh-filled ride of parenting and life's unpredictable symphony.Grab yourself a drink, and join us!You can catch more of Eric Schwartz on Instagram at:https://www.instagram.com/eeericschwartz/You can catch Eric's New Special "Delivery" at:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjrkGocPROYYou can catch The Parent's Lounge live every Tuesday Night at 10pm EST/7pm PST at:https://www.facebook.com/theparentsloungeJamie Kaler's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/jamiekaler/Jason Gowin's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/jasongowin/Justin Rupple's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/therupple/The Parent's Lounge TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@theparentsloungeshowTHE ADMISSIONS GAME - SATIRE EDITIONYour satirical guide to elite college admissions by the fictional counselor to the...Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the show

Today, we have a special episode that was recorded in the midst of the OpenAI management saga where CEO Sam Altman was fired and then hired back. While the management issues have been updated, I thought you might like a window into how developers were thinking about this incident and how the harm in reputation and relationships won't soon be resolved. Included in the panel are OpenAI developer ambassador Bram Adams, long-time OpenAI advocate and developer Bakz T. Future, GPT innovator Leslie Pound, and my Voicebot colleague Eric Schwartz. We break down what was happening but really focus on the impact on developers. I think you will find the discussion insightful.
To say November closed with a flurry of generative AI news is a severe understatement. OpenAI almost melted down pulled it back together, and then we had a birthday for a little product called ChatGPT. Nearly every OpenAI competitor attempted to seize on the company's turmoil and ramped up their visibility for sales, product announcements, or fundraising. Amazon released a slate of new announcements at the AWS re-invent conference. NVIDIA's quarterly revenue looks like a vertical line. And that's not all. Eric Schwartz, head writer of Voicebot.ai, and I break down the news once again this week and hopefully offer a little perspective on the story behind the story. This week's Generative AI News (GAIN) rundown covers two weeks of news. Eric Schwartz of Voicebot.ai and I jammed in 16 different news stories and a few other tidbits in this double roundup. Featured stories this week include: OpenAI Economics - OpenAI is generating a lot of revenue from ChatGPT Plus subscriptions and API usage by software providers. However, the popularity of Azure OpenAI Service is siphoning off many of those API customers as they move into production on Azure, which means lower margins for the LLM kings. SEO in Crisis? - Generative AI search is about to reap substantial change in the SEO industry, and we consider the analysis of a Texas A&M marketing professor's warning that the current crop of SEO consultants may be facing extinction. Foundation Models and Transparency - Stanford researchers have a new 100-point generative AI model transparency checklist. We consider the good, the bad, and the ugly of this endeavor.
