Ep. 6 – Farewell Evangelicalism: Quiet Time with the Bible. Feat. Ryan Canty, Liz Grant, and Liz Jenkins

Let’s settle in friends for some quiet time…. Just kidding. Episode 6 in this serial series interrogating the malformed pillars in evangelicalism is here. We examine one of the most important elements in evangelical belief systems–perhaps THE most important religious icon–the Bible. Evangelicals claim the Bible has supreme authority in designing beliefs. It’s the “Bible alone”, used with complete disregard for malformed interpretations. You may be wondering why chat about the Bible mid-way through this series and not at the very start. After all, isn’t the Bible central to evangelicalism? It is, but not in the manner you might think. The Bible has been distorted to become a tool for religious propaganda that advances the interests of white evangelicalism. In other words, the Bible is used to define conservative and white supremacist worldviews, and believers stuck in the pew of these churches must adopt specific interpretations or risk being excommunicated (if evangelicals had such a thing.) Malformed beliefs like biblical inerrancy and literalism are not, ironically, biblical, yet are core attributes used to keep the faithful in line. Let’s talk about it, Episode 6 is here. Chapters (00:00-01:00) Introduction (02:30) Rohadi on why we’re interrogating the validity of biblical tradition in evangelicalism. (02:33-14:00) Quiet time. Just kidding. Unpacking the ways evangelicals twist the Bible to fit their own devices. (14:00-20:05) Unpacking one of the malformed pillars is used to justify: Patriarchy w/ Liz Jenkins. How does one learn to love the Bible again? For Liz Charlotte Grant, it is almost like a story from a movie: girl meets Bible, falls in love, discovers Bible's secret past, falls out of love with Bible, but eventually realizes she was really in love the whole time, once she learned how to look at the Bible in a new way. This is an eye-opening conversation about how the tools that scholars have used throughout the history of scripture, with names like Hermeneutic and Midrash and Eisegesis, helped bring the Bible back to life after deconstruction, and reconnect Grant with the essence of what she loved most about scripture.Liz Charlotte Grant is an award-winning nonfiction writer based in Colorado, USA. Her debut nonfiction book, Knock at the Sky: Seeking God in Genesis After Losing Faith in the Bible, was released by Eerdmans Publishing Co. on January 7, 2025. Grant's Substack newsletter, the Empathy List, has received recognition from the Webby Awards and the Best of the Church Press Awards. Today's Topics: 1) Gospel - Mark 7:1-13 - When the Pharisees with some scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus, they observed that some of His disciples ate their meals with unclean, that is, unwashed, hands. (For the Pharisees and, in fact, all Jews, do not eat without carefully washing their hands, keeping the tradition of the elders. And on coming from the marketplace they do not eat without purifying themselves. And there are many other things that they have traditionally observed, the purification of cups and jugs and kettles and beds.) So the Pharisees and scribes questioned Him, "Why do Your disciples not follow the tradition of the elders but instead eat a meal with unclean hands?"   He responded, "Well did Isaiah prophesy about you hypocrites, as it is written: This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines human precepts. You disregard God's commandment but cling to human tradition." He went on to say, "How well you have set aside the commandment of God in order to uphold your tradition! For Moses said, Honor your father and your mother, and Whoever curses father or mother shall die. Yet you say, 'If someone says to father or mother, "Any support you might have had from me is qorban"' (meaning, dedicated to God), you allow him to do nothing more for his father or mother. You nullify the word of God in favor of your tradition that you have handed on. And you do many such things." Do you have to give up studying Scripture when you no longer believe in its literal interpretation? Can you still believe this book is sacred even while renegotiating your relationship to the church? In Knock at the Sky, Liz Charlotte Grant offers compelling answers to these questions and more in this deeply personal commentary on the book of Genesis. Braiding together encounters with the natural world, Jewish midrash, and art criticism, Grant makes familiar Sunday school stories strange and offers a fresh vision for reading Scripture after deconstruction. For those who have known the book of Genesis as a weapon in the culture wars, Grant interprets the Bible's inspired book of beginnings as a work of art. Lyrical, insightful, and highly original, Knock at the Sky offers readers a capacious model for seeking God through Scripture even as one's faith continues to evolve. “In this book, you too have permission to question the sacred without fearing . . . unbelief. Knock loudly. . . . Reject answers that do not admit complication. Seek the resonance at the base of the story. The seeking is the point. Because there, in your wandering, God is.”✖️✖️✖️Support the Show: Patreon.com/PreacherBoys✖️✖️✖️If you or someone you know has experienced abuse, visit courage365.org/need-help✖️✖️✖️CONNECT WITH THE SHOW:preacherboyspodcast.comhttps://www.youtube.com/@PreacherBoyshttps://www.facebook.com/preacherboysdoc/https://twitter.com/preacherboysdochttps://www.instagram.com/preacherboyspodhttps://www.tiktok.com/@preacherboyspodTo connect with a community that shares the Preacher Boys Podcast's mission to expose abuse in the IFB, join the OFFICIAL Preacher Boys Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1403898676438188/✖️✖️✖️The content presented in this video is for informational and educational purposes only. Holy Heretics: Losing Religion and Finding Jesus

Episode Summary:If I had a guess, I'm betting one of the main reasons why you deconstructed evangelicalism is because of the Bible. Growing up evangelical, the Bible was the center of faith. It was the key to unlocking the Divine. This big black book held all the secrets to a good life. Just open it up, ask it a question, and out popped God's answer. Easy-peasy.But as you matured from naivety into adulthood, things got messy. A thoughtful reading of the biblical texts suddenly revealed all kinds of problems. The God of the Old Testament is often depicted as tyrannical, petty, vindictive, jealous, genocidal, and malevolently capricious. Women are by and large treated as property and playthings. Violence is often encouraged and slavery is seen as a necessary evil. As theologian Marcus Borg famously quipped, “People are leaving faith these days not because of what they don't know about the Bible. It's because of what they do know.” I agree. But, is all this the Bible's fault? Have we made the Bible into something it was never intended to be? The pressure we modern Christians have placed on the Bible to be perfect, offer total representation of God, and be universally applicable on all matters for all time is just unfair. The Bible isn't an encyclopedia or a rulebook, nor is it inerrant and written by God. Best understood, the Bible isn't even meant to be read literally or historically, but rather spiritually and metaphorically. Instead of passively accepting all the Bible has to say, you are invited into a conversation with the text. Wrestle with it, challenge it, question it, and yes, even disagree with it. According to today's guest on Holy Heretics, “You have permission to question the sacred without fearing unbelief.”I'm joined today by Liz Charlotte Grant to have a conversation about reframing our relationship to this ancient, complex set of documents we call the Holy Bible. “What does Bible study look like after inerrancy? Do you have to give up studying Scripture when you no longer believe in its literal interpretation?” Liz addresses these questions and more in this funny, candid, and informative episode. Oh, and we also talk about her chickens! :)Bio:Liz Charlotte Grant is an award-winning writer whose work has been published in The Revealer, Sojourners, Brevity, Christian Century, Christianity Today, Hippocampus, Religion News Service, US Catholic, Huffington Post, and elsewhere. Preaching for Trinity Sunday, Julia Erdlen offers a reflection on the many ways of relating to God: "God is always bigger than we can imagine, and the Trinity is a constant reminder of that. If I try too hard to nail down one metaphor, one perfect image to describe this mystery, I'll hit up against the limit of my own human understanding. I can't smush down God into a tiny box. God simply won't fit. God is always bigger than I can imagine, and all I can do is keep adding more and more ways to describe and understand God, as I grow in my own understanding and encounter with God." Pope Francis on Saturday forcibly removed the bishop of Tyler, Texas, a firebrand conservative prelate active on social media who has been a fierce critic of the pontiff and has come to symbolize the polarization within the US Catholic hierarchy. A one-line statement from the Vatican said Francis had “relieved” Bishop Joseph Strickland of the pastoral governance of Tyler and appointed the bishop of Austin as the temporary administrator. Strickland, 65, has emerged as a leading critic of Francis, accusing him in a tweet earlier this year of “undermining the deposit of faith.” He has been particularly critical of Francis' recent meeting on the future of the Catholic Church during which hot-button issues were discussed, including ways to better welcome LGBTQ+ Catholics. Earlier this year, the Vatican sent in investigators to look into his governance of the diocese, amid reports that priests and laypeople in Tyler had complained and that he was making unorthodox claims.

Rockford Bishop David Malloy, who chairs the USCCB's Committee on International Justice and Peace, lamented the “mounting casualties and hostilities unfolding on all sides,” as well as the “increased threats to the status quo of the holy places among Jews, Muslims, and Christians.” The strike by Hamas resulted in hundreds of Israeli deaths, as well as reports of Hamas insurgents roaming through Israeli neighborhoods and allegedly abducting and killing citizens there. Malloy in his statement urged the faithful to “recall especially all the families and individuals” suffering amid the conflict. “We call on the faithful, and all people of goodwill to not grow weary and to continue to pray for peace in the land Our Lord, the Prince of Peace, called home,” he said. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/255620/us-bishops-call-for-prayers-for-peace-in-holy-land-amid-escalating-war Pope Francis' prayer intention for the month of October is for the Synod on Synodality, taking place this month in Rome. The pope said: “Our mission and the voice that draws us to him spring from him. This voice reveals to us that the heart of mission is to reach out to everyone, to seek everyone, to welcome everyone, to involve everyone, without excluding anyone.” He concluded with a prayer: “Let us pray for the Church, that she may adopt listening and dialogue as a style of life at every level, allowing herself to be guided by the Holy Spirit towards the world's peripheries.” https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/255619/this-is-pope-francis-prayer-intention-for-the-month-of-october Today the Church celebrates Saint Francis Borgia, a reformer of the Jesuit order. The discussion focuses on a number of troubling themes found in trad Catholic communities: Anti-semitism Militant patriarchy A longing for the Confederacy Xenophobia One of the biggest takeaways from the interivew is that the longing for "traditional" worship services is often a repository for retrograde approaches to family, gender, sex, and social order. The problem isn't the Latin, but it's a good host for other troubling phenomena. A daily news briefing from Catholic News Agency, powered by artificial intelligence. Ask your smart speaker to play “Catholic News,” or listen every morning wherever you get podcasts. www.catholicnewsagency.com - On the eve of President Joe Biden's Sunday visit to the US-Mexico border to meet with local officials and border enforcement agents, the US Catholic bishops announced their opposition to the administration's recent crackdown on illegal immigration to the United States. Biden announced Thursday that the US will step up enforcement at the border and begin to turn away Cubans, Nicaraguans, and Haitians who try to cross the US-Mexico border illegally. The new rules would also allow up to 30,000 people to come into the US each month from Cuba, Nicaragua, and Haiti. Migrants would be able to come for two years and receive work authorization, provided they have an eligible sponsor and can pass vetting and background checks. In his statement, Bishop Mark Seitz of El Paso declared the bishops' opposition to the new rules on the grounds that those fleeing violence have a right to seek safety in the US. “We urge the administration to reverse its present course in favor of humane solutions that recognize the God-given dignity of migrants and provide equitable access to immigration and humanitarian pathways,” the bishop said. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/253290/us-bishops-urge-biden-administration-to-reverse-its-present-course-on-immigration Cardinal Joseph Zen met privately with Pope Francis on Friday after attending Benedict XVI's funeral. The Hong Kong authorities temporarily released the passport of the 90-year-old cardinal, who was arrested last year under the city's national security law, to allow him to travel to Rome. According to America Magazine, Zen met Pope Francis in the afternoon on January 6, in the Vatican's Santa Marta guesthouse. The cardinal also posted photos showing him embracing Benedict XVI's closed coffin and greeting Pope Francis in front of Michelangelo's Pietà on the morning of the funeral. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/253283/cardinal-zen-meets-pope-francis-prays-at-benedict-xvi-s-tomb The SEEK conference, a major Catholic conference for students, adults, and clergy put on by the Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS), will return to Saint Louis in 2024 for the second year in a row, FOCUS announced late last week. According to FOCUS' estimate, nearly 19,000 people — students, adults, families, bishops, priests, religious sisters, and more — attended the five-day SEEK23 conference at America's Center Convention Complex in downtown Saint Louis last week. The conference — now in its 25th year — included workshops, talks, worship, and entertainment. The 2023 gathering was FOCUS' first fully in-person national conference since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. FOCUS held a national conference in Indianapolis in 2019 and a smaller student leadership summit in Phoenix in the earliest days of 2020. Conferences for 2021 and 2022 were held online due to the pandemic. FOCUS announced on Thursday evening that the next SEEK will take place January 1-5, 2024, also in Saint Louis, at the same venue. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/253277/young-catholics-converge-at-seek23-i-love-seeing-people-fall-in-love-with-jesus Today, the Church celebrates The Baptism of the Lord. the Church also celebrates Saint Adrian of Canterbury, the famous Abbot of Saint Augustine's Abbey in Canterbury, where he established a flourishing monastic school, where many future bishops and abbots were educated in Latin, Greek, scripture, theology, Roman law and arithmetic. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/saint/st-adrian-of-canterbury-111

If you are in the USofA we hope you had a great Thanksgiving (eg Gluttony day) and hope you don't break the bank on all those sales (eg Greed day). Wonder if we can fit some more mortal sin days in the next few weeks. As for us The Non-Prophets we have also been stuffing ourselves with news articles for our hosts Richard Gilliver, Student Doctor Ben, and Kelley Laughlin to serve to you on a silver platter! Let's get into it.First up, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the 8 BILLIONTH person born! At the same time, we are already and 8 BILLION PEOPLE! Seems the religious took that “go forth and multiply” thing seriously. Well here's an idea, maybe when people are more secular they will study the carrying capacity of the planet and practice safer population growth. Here's hoping Elon Musk's plan to go to Mars is not his own version of population control.Up next. Show of hands, who here has heard the phrase “hate the sin, love the sinner”? Hmm I am seeing a lot of hands out there. Well seems that The Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints (not typing that out again) is living that. They seem to be just fine with Congress trying to codify gay marriage. They still think it is a sin and that you are all going to burn in hell forever and ever… Hey, it's baby steps right?Speaking of changing view points, seems some US Bishops are really worried about the their congregations views on abortion. Those diagonal moving church leaders seem to not be able to put their pawns in check. So they spend their knights deep in their rooks to stop all those nasty mates. Also somewhere queens are involved. Hey doing a whole thing on chess puns is harder than you think when you are board!Lastly, We take a look back at Thomas Jefferson and his terrible, horrible, no good very bad Thanksgiving. No, wait that was Alexander who wasn't Hamilton. Oh no I must not break out into song! AhHem… Seems it partly had to do with separation of church and state which he was a big supporter of. Then again he was also hypocritical in a lot of other aspects. So I guess we still have a lot of mixed feelings about this. That will do it for this week. The spiritual seeker's guide to living with authenticity and integrity in troubled times by a lauded journalist and monk mentored by Thomas Merton.   This book is a dialogue between two spiritual seekers—one a Trappist monk and the other a married professional woman. It is two people “strugeling to articulate life's universal questions from diverse contexts and perspectives.” Brother Paul writes as one steeped in silence and the daily rhythms of the ancient prayer practices of monasticism. Judith Valente writes as a professional woman attempting to bring a sense of prayer and contemplation to a scattered life in the secular world. Valente uses the story of Brother Paul's interview for a PBS documentary as a jumping-off point: When asked the purpose of the Trappist life in the modern world, he said that it is “to show you don't need a purpose.” The purpose of life, he said, is life. “You're to live your life.” How to Be offers a window into two people living their lives on purpose (or not) and struggling to come to terms with the big issues everyone faces: faith, mortality, mystery, prayer, work. It is a book that provides insight and inspiration for those walking the spiritual path—particularly for those interested in the contemplative path. Judith Valente is a former staff writer for the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal and a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in journalism. She is a former correspondent for PBS's Religion & Ethics NewsWeekly and senior correspondent for investigative reporting and long features at the NPR affiliate in central Illinois. She was also a special correspondent covering faith and values and arts and culture for Chicago Public Radio. Valente contributes articles to US Catholic magazine and National Catholic Reporter.

A large percentage of the priests and bishops surveyed reported high levels of well-being: 77% of priests and 81% of bishops can be categorized as “flourishing,” based on a measurement called the Harvard Flourishing Index. The report also says that 45% of priests surveyed reported at least one symptom of ministry burnout. Many fear that a single false allegation of sexual abuse could ruin them, the report states. Among the priests surveyed, a large majority — 82% — said they regularly fear false allegations. And many diocesan priests fear being abandoned by their diocese and bishop should they find themselves falsely accused, more so than religious priests. The priests surveyed also offered several recommendations for rebuilding trust between them and their bishops, which you can read about at catholicnewsagency.com. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/252588/major-survey-of-catholic-priests-finds-trust-issues-burnout-fear-of-false-allegations The Pontifical Academy for Life issued a statement Wednesday defending the recent appointment of an outspoken advocate for abortion rights on the grounds that members are chosen to contribute to “fruitful interdisciplinary, intercultural, and interreligious dialogue.” An Italian-American economist and professor at University College London, Mariana Mazzucato, was among seven academics appointed by Pope Francis on October 15 to serve five-year terms with the academy. On several occasions Mazzucato shared her pro-abortion views online when Roe v Wade was overturned by the US Supreme Court. The Pontifical Academy for Life was formed by Saint John Paul II in 1994, and originally members were required to sign a declaration affirming pro-life views. That requirement went away in 2016, but the academy's new statutes still require members to conform with Church teaching. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/252589/vatican-press-office-pro-abortion-pontifical-academy-for-life-member-contributes-to-dialogue Today the Church celebrates Saint Irene, a Portuguese nun who was martyred in defense of her chastity in the year 653. Saint Irene's body was miraculously recovered after being thrown into the river. She was canonized in part because of the great amount of miracles that occured at her tomb. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/saint/st-irene-26 The Church also honors Saint Bertilla Boscardin, a sister and nurse who cared for Italian soldiers during World War One. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/saint/st-bertilla-boscardin-630

The death of Queen Elizabeth has many wondering about the future of Christianity in the UK. The Queen was outspoken about her faith in Jesus Christ, but how will King Charles change what it means for the monarch to be the “Defender of the Faith”? We all know evangelicals are divided by politics, but a new report by Catholic bishops says Roman Catholics are too. What can we learn from one another? Poverty among kids in the U.S. has declined dramatically in recent decades. Liberals say it's the result of government programs. Conservative credit economic growth. Who is right?   Then, Anglican pastor Aaron Damiani talks with Skye about his journey from megachurch burnout to life-giving liturgy. His new book, “Earth Filled with Heaven,” is written to Christians skeptical about tradition, rituals, and sacraments, but they might be the key to saving evangelicalism from itself. Plus, why you shouldn't drink coffee before shopping or trust ads featuring dogs.   Bonus Patreon Interview with Aaron Damiani - Https://www.patreon.com/posts/72516965/   News Segment 0:00 - Intro 03:06 - Dog and cat marketing 9:42 - Drinking coffee before shopping 11:13- The Queen's faith and Christianity in the UK 21:46 - Catholic church split by politics 30:36 - Child poverty has declined   Interview with Aaron Damiani “Earth Filled with Heaven: Finding Life in Liturgy, Sacraments, and other Ancient Practices of the Church” - https://amzn.to/3Szeaqy Aaron Damiani - https://twitter.com/aarondamiani 43:55 - Background 47:47 - Megachurch burnout 52:14 - Liturgy and sacrament overview 59:38 - Misperceptions about liturgy 1:08:21 - Mitigating celebrity dynamics in the church 1:11:48 - Is this just another novelty? 1:15:08 - Credits   Articles from news segment:“Dog owners take more risks, cat owners are more cautious, research finds” by Lei Jia (Salon) - https://www.salon.com/2022/09/04/dog-owners-take-more-risks-cat-owners-are-more-cautious-research-finds_partner/   “Drinking coffee before shopping could make you spend more” by Adam Barnes (The Hill) - https://thehill.com/changing-america/enrichment/arts-culture/3567346-drinking-coffee-before-shopping-could-make-you-spend-more/   “US Catholic bishops' report to the Vatican shows a church split by politics” by Claire Giangravé (Religion News Service) - https://religionnews.com/2022/09/23/u-s-catholic-bishops-report-to-the-vatican-shows-a-church-split-by-politics/   “Expanded Safety Net Drives Sharp Drop in Child Poverty” by Jason DeParle (NYT) - https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/11/us/politics/child-poverty-analysis-safety-net.html   Holy Post website: https://www.holypost.com/ Holy Post Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/holypost   The Holy Post is supported by our listeners. A daily news briefing from Catholic News Agency, powered by artificial intelligence. Ask your smart speaker to play “Catholic News,” or listen every morning wherever you get podcasts. www.catholicnewsagency.com - The US Catholic bishops appealed on Monday for “an honest dialogue rooted in Christ” about the “persistent evil of racism” after two mass shootings. The bishops spoke out after a gunman killed 10 people and injured three others on May 14 at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, and a shooter killed one person and wounded five others on May 15 at a church in Laguna Woods, California. Authorities called the mass shooting in Buffalo a racially motivated hate crime and said that the gunman specifically targeted the store because it is located in a predominantly Black neighborhood. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/251260/us-catholic-bishops-call-for-honest-dialogue-on-persistent-evil-of-racism-after-mass-shootings The two branches of the Catholic charity, Caritas, in Ukraine say they have helped almost 1.5 million people since Russia's full-scale invasion. Caritas Ukraine, which offers humanitarian assistance through the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, oversees an office in the Russian-occupied city of Mariupol where seven people were killed under Russian tank fire. The country's other Caritas organization is Caritas-Spes, the charitable mission of Ukraine's Latin Rite bishops.Caritas groups are also active in neighboring countries, where more than six million Ukrainians have fled since February 24. In Poland, which has welcomed over three million Ukrainian refugees, Caritas' diocesan network has delivered over 1.5 million meals to more than 500,000 people. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/251253/this-is-going-to-be-a-long-haul-caritas-groups-help-almost-15-million-ukrainians-amid-war Christian leaders of the Holy Land on Monday condemned recent violence at the funeral of Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, saying the “tragic episode” has “deeply wounded” the Christian community. Abu Akleh was a Melkite Greek Catholic and a Palestinian American who was killed while covering an Israeli raid on a refugee camp in the West Bank May 11. The BBC reported that during her funeral procession on May 13, Abu Akleh's coffin “almost fell” as police waded into the crowd brandishing batons and using stun grenades. The Christian leaders called the police' actions at the funeral, which took place in the parking compound of St. Joseph's Hospital in Jerusalem, a “violent intrusion.” On May 12, the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem called “for a thorough and urgent investigation of all the circumstances of Abu Akleh's killing and for bringing those responsible to justice.” catholicnewsagency.com/news/251256/christian-leaders-condemn-violence-at-funeral-of-palestinian-journalist-shireen-abu-akleh Today, the Church celebrates Saint Pascal Baylon, a 16th-century lay brother amongst the Franciscan friars of the Alcantarine Reform. How to Be: A Monk and a Journalist Reflect on Living & Dying, Purpose & Prayer, Forgiveness & Friendship by Judith Valente, an award-winning author, journalist and poet, and Brother Paul Quenon, a Trappist monk of the famous Abbey of Gethsemani and an acclaimed poet and memoirist. How to Be is a dialogue in letters between two spiritual seekers — one following a monastic life framed by ancient prayer rhythms and the other a married, professional woman seeking a deeper sense of mindfulness in her busy life. In their letters, they ask universal questions about faith, work, prayer, balance, and meaning – questions that have become particularly relevant in the wake of our pandemic experience. How to Be provides ways to successfully navigate those questions through a spiritual lens. Brother Paul and Valente are popular speakers, retreat and workshop leaders, podcast guests, and media sources in print, radio, and video. Both are available to discuss their book. Interviews at the Abbey outside of Louisville, KY, offer stunning visuals. These are some interesting angles to pursue: § How to Be is a book for seekers, whether starting out or spiritually devout. The authors offer thoughtful, practical ideas for handling conflict, leaving jobs, coping with the unexpected, and dealing with loss, as well as spiritual guidance on prayer, meditation, and living a more contemplative life. § How to Be seeks to preserve the wisdom Brother Paul has gained from 60-plus years in the contemplative life. Monks like Brother Paul are becoming rare. He is also one of the few people alive who personally knew the great spirituality writer Thomas Merton, who was his novice director. § It is unusual for monks in a cloistered order, such as the Trappists, to become close friends with outsiders, especially women. The friendship between Brother Paul and Judith Valente spans more than a decade and has been nurtured through visits and their years of writing letters to one another in which they share their practical and spiritual insights. She lives in Normal, Illinois. Learn more at www.judithvalente.com. Brother Paul Quenon, OCSO, entered the Trappist Abbey of Gethsemani in 1958 at the age of 17. Thomas Merton was his novice master and spiritual director. Quenon is the author of 9 collections of poetry. His memoir, In Praise of the Useless Life

Each Memorial Day, our thoughts turn to all the men and women who have died serving our country in the military, both during peacetime and during war. It is a time when individually and as families and as a nation we reflect on the nature of war and the significance of military service, and to help in our reflection, we welcome Geronimo Whitaker and Peter Lucier to our program. Our guests are veterans of two very different wars fought in very different times, one as an Army foot soldier in Vietnam and the other as a Marine in Afghanistan, but each has known the violence, the loneliness, and the lasting effects of war, and in that sense, they also share a common bond. We offer our special appreciation to Garett Reppenhagen, Executive Director of Veterans for Peace, and Pat Alviso, Executive Director of Military Families Speak Out, for their assistance in arranging for our guests on this podcast. RELEVANT LINKS Washington Post series on "The Afghanistan Papers" Peter Lucier, a veteran and a Catholic, wrestles with the lies of war and his faith. His writing career began in 2015 when he joined a group of former junior enlisted writers who contributed to Tom Rick's Best Defense blog. His writing has since appeared in the Washington Post, the New York Times, America Magazine, US Catholic, and many more publications. He primarily writes about military and veteran issues, especially faith and military service.  His 2017 piece, “Not Your Messiah,” examines how veterans fulfill a dual messianic role in American civil religion – sacrificial lambs and high priests of civic holidays. His 2019 piece for America Magazine looked at the Catholic ritual of penance as a mechanism for healing the wounds of war. He has also written for the Washington Post on how to respond to the lies of war, as a Catholic, and in response to the Afghanistan Papers.  Lucier currently lives in St. Louis, Missouri where he continues to write, and is a law student at St. Louis University.   SUPPORT PFJ We greatly appreciate your financial support so that we can continue to educate, advocate and pray for the things that matter to our organization.  Please consider donating through PayPal.
