Jens Nordvig, founder and CEO of ExAnte Data and MarketReader, joins Jack Farley to give his data-driven look at bank lending, de-dollarization, and global growth. Nordvig notes that bank lending contraction has not yet appeared in the data but that the situation deserves to be monitored. He explains why the world continues to rely on the U.S. dollar and exposes several statistical misunderstandings of data on Chinese and U.S. sovereign bond flows. Nevertheless, he is bearish on the U.S. dollar (even in a recession, perhaps), and he explains why in great detail. He says to be on watch if the U.S. Dollar continues to decline in value during a stock market fall (historically, the U.S. Dollar rallies during a sell-off in stocks). Lastly, Nordvig shares findings from his exciting new venture, MarketReader, which aims to use artificial intelligence to help generate insights for investors. ____ Follow Jens Nordvig on Twitter https://twitter.com/jnordvig Follow Exante on Twitter https://twitter.com/ExanteData Follow MarketReader on Twitter https://twitter.com/MarketReaderInc Follow Jack Farley on Twitter https://twitter.com/JackFarley96 Follow Forward Guidance on Twitter https://twitter.com/ForwardGuidance Follow Blockworks on Twitter https://twitter.com/Blockworks_ ____ Use code GUIDANCE10 to get 10% off Permissionless 2023 in Austin: https://blockworks.co/event/permissionless-2023 Research, news, data, governance and models – now, all in one place. Covid-19 helped feed a surge in interest in alternative data as investors sought real-time insights into the economy and the pandemic. Economist Jens Nordvig, founder of Exante Data and MarketWatch's Bill Watts discuss what works and the evolving role of alternative data in making investment decisions.
The Interview: Danish-born economist Jens Nordvig, founder of Exante Data, a data and analytics firm for institutional investors that specializes in foreign exchange markets and macroeconomic policy, joins Real Vision co-founder and CEO Raoul Pal for a deep-dive conversation on the global economic outlook; the impact of the vaccine rollout on the U.S., Europe and emerging markets; and the likelihood of multi-year fiscal stimulus. Nordvig sees monetary policy frameworks evolving in ways that are unfriendly toward bonds, like Average Inflation Targeting (AIT), causing a fundamental rethinking among investors for owning fixed income assets. Recorded April 7, 2020. Key Learnings: A multi-decade bull market in fixed income lasted longer than many expected due to negative interest rate policy, and the COVID shock made central banks across the globe max out monetary policy. Interest rates are currently unattractive to many kinds of investors, and the economic outlook is such that risk assets look attractive, including cryptocurrency. Follow @jnordvig @ExanteData. This week, Exante Data founder and CEO, Jens Nordvig, joined to discuss what he calls "the big myth about money and inflation." Jon Turek, author of Cheap Convexity, offered his maco outlook for markets amid the simultaneous risk-on rally in stocks and breakevens. Zach Maril, the founder of the Knuckleheads Club, who has spent years researching Google's search engine, explained why Google's webcrawler is a natural monopoly and should be regulated as one. Then Seth Ginns, managing partner and head of liquid investments at Coinfund, discussed the increasing institutional interest in bitcoin as the cryptocurrency continues to surge.
As our crisis series of the Alpha Exchange continues, I was pleased to have the opportunity to engage with Jens Nordvig, the founder and CEO of Exante Data. After stints at both Goldman Sachs and Nomura, Jens launched his independent firm in 2016 with an eye towards using a highly data driven approach to help institutional clients make sense of global economic developments and position portfolios accordingly. Our discussion focuses broadly on the notion of nonlinearity as it applies to asset markets, a key part of the investment philosophy Jens utilizes to evaluate risk and highly applicable to the current landscape of virus centric uncertainty. Harnessing new and extremely real-time data sets, Exante Data was decidedly early in understanding that Covid19 was going to be a big deal, globally, and that markets were failing to appreciate the risks. This disconnect and the potential troubles that lie ahead owe to the difficulty in appreciating the growth in processes like a virus that are exponential in nature. I think you will really enjoy this episode of the Alpha Exchange, my discussion with Jens Nordvig.
This week, George Pyne, founder and CEO of Bruin Sports Capital, joined to talk about how the sports economy is adjusting to its new reality and preparing for a possible return without fans. Adam Pritzker, founder and CEO of Assembled Brands, came on to talk about his work ensuring small businesses receive their loans from the federal government. Then Columbia Law School professor Kathryn Judge explained why she thinks the government intervention to shield big companies from the pandemic will give rise to moral hazard.
Patrick Chovanec, Economic Adviser at Silvercrest Asset Management, on how investors should be looking at the coronavirus. Tara Lachapelle, Entertainment, Telecom & Deals Columnist for Bloomberg Opinion, on longtime Disney CEO Bob Iger handing the reins to Bob Chapek. Luke Kawa, Bloomberg cross-asset reporter, on how Reddit's "greedy, profane" traders are shaking up the stock market. Brad Setser, Senior Fellow for International Economics at the Council on Foreign Relations, and Senior Advisor at Exante Data, on how the coronavirus is impacting global money flows. Hosted by Lisa Abramowicz and Paul Sweeney.
You probably haven't thought much about the Taiwanese life insurance industry. Why would you have? But they're among the most fascinating entities in the financial world. And for a long time they've been a source of incredible mystery. They've built up a gigantic position in foreign, US-dollar denominated assets in order to fund domestic liabilities denominated in Taiwanese Dollars. But how do they hedge this currency mismatch? Nobody has figured it out until now. On this week's podcast, we speak with Brad Setser of CFR and Exante Data about how he and a pseudonymous partner finally cracked the code.
Mike Mayo, Senior Banking Analyst for Wells Fargo Securities, on his market moving note on how banks are poised to "party like its 1995" if rates were cut. Brad Setser, Senior Fellow for International Economics at the Council on Foreign Relations and Senior Advisor at Exante Data, on how Trump's trade wars are impacting the global economy. Hosted by Lisa Abramowicz and Paul Sweeney.
Jens Nordvig, Founder and CEO of Exante Data, on China, EM currencies, and Mexico. Carl Weinberg, Founder and Chief International Economist at High Frequency Economics, on the global economy as Trump's trade wars heat up. Kathy Hannun, co-founder and CEO at Dandelion Energy, a spin-out company of Google X, on why geothermal energy will be a $9 billion market. Shira Ovide, Bloomberg Opinion technology columnist, on Google sinking as the DOJ mulls an anti-competitive probe into Alphabet. Hosted by Lisa Abramwicz and Paul Sweeney.
This week, Joe, Scarlet and Julie talked with Peter Conti-Brown, a Fed Historian at the Wharton School, about President Trump's break from precedent when he weighed into monetary policy, and why it's more important than it seems. Then Jens Nordvig, CEO and Founder of Exante Data, came on to discuss what we learned from Jerome Powell's two days of Congressional testimony, and why despite the flattening yield curve, he still sees plenty of stimulus coming down the pipeline. Terry Haines, Evercore ISI Senior Political Strategist, and Peter Tchir, Academy Securities Head of Macro Strategy, joined to have a trade war debate. Are markets being too complacent about tariffs or are they too glued to the headlines?
