Unlike some divisions defined by a single dominant team, the AL Central enters the year with a much more open structure. Several clubs have a path to contention, each built around very different identities whether that's elite pitching, internal development, or emerging young talent. Detroit may have the most balanced roster on paper, anchored by a frontline rotation and a lineup that continues to mature. Cleveland once again leans on one of baseball's most reliable development pipelines, pairing strong defense with a pitching staff that consistently keeps the club competitive. Kansas City revolves around one of the game's brightest stars and a young core that continues to grow around him. Minnesota enters the year trying to rebound from a difficult season while navigating key injuries, and Chicago remains focused on evaluating its next wave of young talent as the organization continues its longer-term rebuild. It's a division where pitching depth, player development, and lineup growth will likely matter more than headline star power and where the race could stay tight well into the summer.

When next Major League Baseball hosts a World Series it will have been a decade since any of thw 10 teams from the Midwest divisions have reached the Fall Classic. They've rarely had a club get as far as the championship series, and the National League Central hasn't won a game in the best-of-seven NLCS since 2018. Oh, and coming out of the pandemic the small-market teams that dot the NL and American League Central divisions have been rocked by revenue turbulence. All while the games star free agents gather at the coasts. With that as the background, Cincinnati Enquirer baseball writer Gordon Wittenmyer suggested to Post-Dispatch baseball writer and BPIB host Derrick Goold that they poll as many executives as possible at the General Manager Meetings to ask: Which team in the NL Central is most likely to be the next team to win a World Series? The answers were revealing -- not just for the task, but also for what executives view as the most likely traits a team needs to win. The "most resources," came up often as the big-city Cubs received the most votes. Here is the Post-Dispatch story that came from the poll. And here is the podcast that expands upon the poll to discuss the factors that got the divisions here, how one or more can escape the bind, and whether Major League Baseball is just going to keep soaring above fly-over country until the economic structure of the game changes. A strong sense of support or allegiance is often associatedwith significant financial commitments in sports. This is especially relevantwhen trying to retain one of your homegrown heroes, such as one of the mostprominent pitchers in Major League Baseball, Tarik Skubal. In just over a yearand a half, the Detroit Tigers will have to confront a crucial decisionregarding Skubal, as he becomes a free agent at the end of the 2026 season.  With a less aggressive approach to the trading deadline andtheir diminishing lead in the American League Central, all eyes are on theTigers to see if they can establish a clear vision for the present and future.  Meanwhile, the future of Major League Baseball is alsouncertain, as the collective bargaining agreement is set to expire at the endof the 2026 season. Owners are pushing for a salary cap, while players areclearly resisting this effort. The outcome of these negotiations couldsignificantly impact the state of the game, both now and in the future. Finally, it will be interesting to see how the recenttrading deadline affects the race to October and the winner of the FallClassic. But the Tigers still have a 46-27 record — best in the American League Central by nine games, best in the AL by 2.5 games and best in MLB by 0.5 games. Tigers ace Tarik Skubal appeared on the Barstool podcast, "Pardon My Take," and said he would sign for 10 years, $425 million when he becomes a free agent after the 2026 season. Is he worth that contract? Also: We explain why Skubal's status with the Tigers is ultimately up to owner Christopher Ilitch. As for the team, the Tigers have a 17-12 record in the last 30 days, since May 16. The offense ranks 20th in MLB a 96 wRC+, the starting rotation ranks first with a 2.53 ERA and the bullpen ranks 25th with a 4.68 ERA. What problems are just part of the ebbs and flows of the season, and what needs to be addressed before it's too late? The trade deadline is still more than a month away, scheduled for 6 p.m. July 31, but it's never too early to look at options for the Tigers, needing a high-leverage reliever and a position player for the left side of the infield.
