According to a recent report from PEN America — it's a century-old nonprofit that works to protect free expression through literature — Florida overtook Texas during the last school year for the number one spot when it comes to the number of books banned in public schools. There's been a 33% spike in book bans nationally, and Florida now accounts for more than 40% of all documented bans. In response to these trends, PEN America just named its first-ever Florida Director, Katie Blankenship. She'll be overseeing advocacy in defense of free expression across the state. Her office is being funded by a group of bestselling writers who have come together to fight censorship in Florida. We meet Ms. Blankenship, and learn about the work being done by what's called The Purple Group to push back against issues like book bans. It's a nonpartisan group of Lee County residents who believe high quality public schools that welcome all students and their families are the bedrock of our multicultural, multi-ethnic democracy.

Sometimes all it takes to start the spiral into inescapable poverty is a few unpaid parking tickets. When someone is already struggling with money, small legal fines can result in their license being taken away, and then they often can't earn any money at all. Sarah Couture, Florida Director of the Fines & Fees Justice Center, joins us on this episode to explain how her work seeks to erase these pitfalls from our legal system, so that people who find themselves in trouble don't end up stuck there. A more equitable justice system not only benefits the individuals navigating it, but benefits the system itself, which often relies on the payment of fines and fees for funding. Tune in to learn how telling YOUR story of legal complications can actually make a difference, and also, how a little hot sauce can vastly improve your grandma's patented mac and cheese recipe. And as always, follow us on social media @FeedingTampaBay for more tips on how you can help improve your community for yourself, for your children, and for your neighbors in need!
Hear Bill's interview with his longtime friend, George Cavros. George is the Florida Director and Energy Policy Attorney for SACE, the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy. If you believe that homeowners and business owners in the Sunshine State should be able to produce their personal or business energy supply and be fairly compensated for the excess electrons that they send back to the utility grid...this is a "must listen" episode! The goal of this radio special is to educate Floridians about two bills that are currently being heard in the Florida House and Senate that could potentially stymie the growth of individually owned solar power systems in our state. Now you might be thinking...wait a minute...how can that be? The sun's energy is clean, abundant, and free. How is it possible that attempts are being made to shut down the thriving solar industry in Florida? Listen in and learn how you can help keep Florida "up to speed" with the rest of America and protect our citizens' rights and their personal freedom to choose their energy supply.Support the show (https://solar-fit.com/contact-us/)

Dawn Shirreffs, the Florida Director of the Environmental Defense Fund, shares the profound climate changes happening right now in Florida. Unlike other states in different regions, Florida has its own very real and lasting effects due to climate change. With powerful hurricanes and low-lying land, Florida is experiencing an increase in flooding and structural damage to the area. Shirreffs explains specific needs for the community. More than just science-based reasoning, EDF works with scientists, policymakers, economists, and community representatives to make sure all communities are taken care of. Florida's economy will feel the impact too. Shirreffs's data suggests that in the next 20 years, Florida will see a 5-8% increase in electricity usage, rising homeowners insurance costs, and decreasing property values because of climate change. Shirreffs shares what we can do to have a positive impact on climate change. Lastly, the two discuss what people can do on an individual level. Shirreffs suggests making smart choices about energy and vehicle purchases and turning down the thermostat. The next step would be connecting with a local organization or contacting your local government representatives to be a part of the solution.
