When Hernan Lopez founded Wondery in 2016, podcasts were just starting to go mainstream. Five years later, his team had scored a number of hit shows and sold to Amazon for a reported $300 million. Not bad for an immigrant from Argentina who moved to the U.S. in his late 20s with “terrible” English skills. Before launching Wondery, Hernan worked his way up in television, eventually becoming CEO of Fox International Channels. But despite his experience and connections, he struggled to attract investors and break through in an emerging industry. After the success of shows like Dirty John, Wondery began to take off, and today it's one of the largest podcast networks in the world, with hundreds of shows in comedy, crime, sports, history and business—including this one! This episode was produced by Chris Maccini with music by Ramtin Arablouei.Edited by Neva Grant, with research from Alex Cheng. Our engineers were Gilly Moon and Maggie Luthar. You can follow HIBT on Twitter & Instagram, and email us at hibt@id.wondery.com.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Japan's Top Business Interviews Podcast By Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan
Frank Foley, founder of the Next Big Thing and former Managing Director of HarperCollins Japan, provides a detailed account of working inside Japan's publishing and media industry through his experience with multinational corporations including HarperCollins and News Corporation. Mr. Foley first got his start as a publishing officer at the Australia Japan Research Centre which led him to land a job at the publishing company HarperCollins Japan. This then led Mr. Foley to work for News Corporation, an American multinational mass media company owned by Rupert Murdoch. At News Corporation, Mr. Foley liaised between the media company and its Japanese partners using his language skills and knowledge of Japanese culture. Mr. Foley was involved in many start-up projects investing in satellite television through News Corporation, sitting in on meetings involving Mr. Murdoch, Soft Bank founder Son Masayoshi and executives of Fuji TV. Working as a country manager for News Broadcasting Japan (later Fox International Channels), Mr. Foley led a team of 40 people after being in charge of massive downsizing. In addition to the task of downsizing which Mr. Foley recalls as a “traumatic experience,” he found it challenging to ensure his employees were highly engaged and working strategically towards a common goal. Being a liaison between head office and Japan was another major challenge to bridge the cultural differences between various parties. When leading the downsizing operation, Mr. Foley learned the importance of communicating the “why” behind the restructuring to maintain transparency and trust with his remaining team members, as well as investing in a strong HR department with empathetic, approachable people. After working in News Corporation for close to 20 years, Mr. Foley discovered he was not a “TV person” but inclined more towards business development and brand management. He then moved on to HIT Entertainment to work on brand business development for Thomas the Tank Engine. On his fascination with branding, Mr. Foley explains: “I realized [what] I really liked about those brands was…the brand itself, not TV specifically, but about the brand and how it fitted with the lifestyle of Japanese people, and you can see the possibilities that go way beyond the actual business that you're in. So I…was very interested in moving from a specific operational business [to one], where you're really working with the brand and trying to figure out what the best strategy for the entire brand is…And Thomas the Tank Engine was that….it's like sky is the limit.” In addition to Thomas, Mr. Foley also worked for Guinness World Records owned by HIT Entertainment. There, Mr. Foley had the challenge of coming up with a new business model for the product as the brand was just entering the Japanese market. Mr. Foley then became interested in building his own business and began providing brand consulting for various consumer products, which led him to become Executive Managing Director at Universal Music's subsidiary company, Bravado where he helped successfully recruited another executive to turn the business around. Mr. Foley then moved back to HarperCollins as the Managing Director leading the distribution of English language books in Japan, such as Harlequin novels and manga in partnership with Softbank. Under his leadership, Mr. Foley sought to have the business operate on a brand driven strategy that focused on growth and the needs of the market rather than following a set template. For example, Mr. Foley used HarperCollins' and his personal global connections to land a publishing deal with soccer player Maya Yoshida to publish his autobiography in English and Japanese. On landing this book deal with a celebrity soccer player, Mr. Foley explains: “if we just went head to head with Shueisha, Kodansha (Japan's top publishing companies), we're not going to get anywhere. We have to think innovatively. We have to think, okay, what can we borrow from our leverage or head office for more international network to allow us to punch above our weight here in Japan.” To create a culture of open communication and high engagement among his employees, Mr. Foley has created opportunities for people to share information and present their ideas. For example, at HarperCollins he has set up a “hall of fame” bulletin board in which different departments would post updated information on what type of projects they are working on. At the end of the month, Mr. Foley would have people from all levels present their projects to the rest of the team to create a sense of ownership and accountability. Mr. Foley also provided equal opportunities for people to work on projects, regardless of their job titles in which an employee in the IT department would be the project lead to publish an Elon Musk book on Tesla. Mr. Foley has also become more mindful of knowing when to step back as he adds: “in more recent years [I've realized it's best to] just get the right people in the job for whatever needs to be done, give them the general direction, the strategy, and check back every once in a while. But for the most part get out of the way and let them do their jobs.” On advice to new leaders coming into Japan, Mr. Foley advises to hire a strong HR person as he experienced firsthand having the right HR person provides security to the company. He also adds to not be afraid of letting people go if that individual is negatively impacting the rest of the team. Secondly, he advises to spend the time to understand Japanese consumers and the local Japanese strategy. Thirdly, he advises on providing equal opportunities for people including women. Mr. Foley's company, Next Big Thing provides consulting in children's consumer brands and educational properties, including Japan market entry, brand strategy and brand management, character and brand licensing, and Japanese-language publishing. More information can be found on Mr. Foley's LinkedIn page. https://www.linkedin.com/in/frankfoleyjapan/

When Hernan Lopez left his post as president and CEO of Fox International Channels in 2016 to launch a podcast company people asked him a straightforward question: Are you nuts? But he saw parallels between the nascent medium of podcasting and the cable industry of the early 2000s. The company he started is called Wondery, and today it produces premium podcast fare like Dirty John and Business Wars. Wondery’s newest show is called Dr. Death. It was released just this Tuesday and is already topping the iTunes charts. Lopez joins me today as the podcast upfronts get underway in New York to break down the landscape as he sees it.
HERNAN LOPEZ is the CEO of the fastest rising podcast company in the world—Wondery. Lopez is a native of Argentina and held positions at different companies there (including Canal 9 and Cablevision/Radio America) before starting his 18 year run at FOX, where he rose through its international TV ranks, including 5 as CEO and 3 as COO. Under his guidance, FOX International Channels launched hundreds of channels, expanded into premium sports/original production in multiple languages, pioneered the global day-and-date launch of TV shows with “The Walking Dead,” and increased revenue at the company to $ 3 billion dollarsHe left Fox to create Wondery, a company designed to become a network that offers an umbrella brand, technological and administrative support, a desirable demographic profile, and the opportunity to bring extraordinary podcasts to television for its podcast partners.
Hernan is the founder and CEO of Wondery, a network of storytellers. Wondery's podcasts include Sword & Scale, Hollywood & Crime, We Study Billionaires, Fall Of Rome and their latest hit I Hate My Boss. Before that, Hernan was CEO of Fox International Channels, a $3 billion organization. But how did he get there after moving to the US at 27 speaking broken English?

"The Medium is the Message." Marshall McLuhan Marshall McLuhan theorized that the medium is the message, that society is shaped by the way in which we communicate rather than what we are communicating. The Internet, the emerging online community, have given the world unprecedented access to information via light speed online. Today are we confirming McLuhan's hypothesis? Unfortunately, the information environment has launched a civil war within copyright law. Congress has periodically, but consistently modified copyright laws to respond to the introduction of new technologies affecting copyright. Although Congress passed the Copyright Act of 1976 to cope with emerging technology, no one anticipated the explosion of digital technology which has marked the digital age. IN a Worldwide First, the new 20th Century Fox Drama "Touch" will launch in more than 100 countries worldwide with global marketing support and a Global advertising sponsor. Touch, the intriguing new drama series from Tim Kring (Heroes) and starring Kiefer Sutherland in his first television project since the Emmy-winning 24, will receive an unprecedented global launch for its March series premiere that includes coordinated worldwide distribution, marketing and advertising sponsorship. In a television first, Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution, Fox Broadcasting Company, FOX One, 20th Century Fox Television and FOX International Channels are collaborating on a worldwide launch for the series, which will premiere nearly simultaneously in more than 100 countries. To kick off the series global marketing efforts, Sutherland will embark on an international media tour, stopping in several major cities across Europe and culminating in a global media event in New York City on March 18 a date that figures prominently in Touchs pilot episode. In another industry first, Unilever has come on board as the series global advertising sponsor in a one-of-a-kind partnership designed to bring Touch to a worldwide audience. Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution has secured deals in over 160 markets with some of the worlds leading broadcasters and pan-regional platforms. The global launch will make the much-anticipated drama available on channels all around the world, including Global Television in Canada, Sky 1 in the United Kingdom, ProSieben in Germany, Yes TV in Israel and Channel One in Russia. FOX International Channels will launch the series in 64 countries throughout Latin America, Asia and Europe. Now, for the first time we will discuss the truth about the origins of this series as well as the media ecological ramifications of copyright, law and justice in world where theft of property in Hollywood occurs everyday. Under digital circumstances can ownership of property exist? Does the average writer, artist and musician have a claim in there original works and will justice prevail?

“FCU: Fact Checker’s Unit” follows the adventures of two overzealous fact checkers – Russell (Karinen) and Dylan (Sacca) – who work at the popular Dictum magazine and stop at nothing to check the most absurd celebrity facts. No star is too big and no fact too obscure or arcane to run down for accuracy’s sake. The series will feature globally recognizable guest stars as themselves and check facts such as those concerning Luke Perry: (Is Luke’s house really haunted?), Alex Trebek (Does Alex shave against the grain?), Dave Navarro (Does Dave insist that the tears of a virgin, beetles and finger sandwiches be provided backstage at any venue he plays?) and Karolina Kurkova (Does Karolina use SPF 125 at the beach?). At NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, students pointed and laughed at Peter Karinen and Brian Sacca. Thus, in 2003, it made sense to start cashing in on this phenomenon and take to the stage at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatres in NYC and LA. Their most acclaimed oeuvre, "Pete and Brian's One Man Show," simultaneously touched and offended capacity audiences on both coasts, and was an official selection of the 2007 HBO US Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen. Since then, Pete and Brian have written two almost-funny-enough pilots for 20th Century Fox, amassed an almost-impressive online following by making a ton of web videos -- including two seasons of the series "Single Dads" for Fox International Channels -- and have written for numerous award shows, including the MTV Movie Awards. Their first foray into fact checking came in 2008, when their short film "FCU: Fact Checkers Unit" (co-created with Dan Beers and starring Bill Murray) was an official selection of the Sundance Film Festival. They are currently developing two almost-original screenplays with Ben Stiller's Red Hour Films and "Zombieland" director Ruben Fleischer.
