On Eavesdroppin' comedy podcast this week, hosts Geordie & Michelle discuss the tragic tale of Miriam, the Mexican reality star…In 2003, a beautiful Mexican model called Miriam Rivera was contacted by production company Endemol to star in a new reality-TV dating show. The premise was this: 6 alpha hotties from the UK were selected from hundreds of guys who threw their hat in the ring to not only vie for the affections of abeautiful girl on the Spanish island of Ibiza, but they also had the chance to walk away with a holiday of a lifetime with their dream girl AND £10,000 in cash. It was meant to be a bit of fun – except Miriam had a secret. And the boys didn't know about it.This week, Geordie delves into the wild west of reality shows: There's Something About Miriam, where SPOILER a production company tricked 6 guys into dating a trans woman while manipulating the star into lying, all to get ratings.

This week, Jacki and Lyle delve into yet another scandal which has rocked the media and broadcasting world. In recent weeks, comedian, TV presenter, movie star and self-professed wellness influencer Russell Brand has been accused of sexual assault. Four women allege that Brand assaulted them between 2006 and 2013, a period where he was considered to be at the height of his fame. This was while he was a presenter for Channel 4's spin-off Big Brother programme, Big Brother's Big Mouth, produced by Endemol, before landing a prime slot as host of a BBC Radio 2 show alongside Jonathan Ross, and later appearing in several Hollywood films. These four women spoke to journalists from the Sunday Times, the Times and Channel 4's Dispatches programme, who were working jointly on the investigation. Journalists working for these outlets also spoke to people who worked alongside Brand during his media career and who detailed their experiences of his attitudes towards women more generally. In this episode, Jacki and Lyle look at this situation from a slightly different angle. They focus on the due diligence businesses undertake before hiring their employees, and what more could have been done by these major broadcasters and film studios in terms of their own due diligence before hiring Brand. Jacki discusses her own experiences in this area, as well as the difficulty when it comes to adequate reference checks, and Lyle asks whether some businesses may now look to undertake retrospective due diligence in an effort to be as squeaky clean as possible moving forward. You can watch Channel 4's Dispatches programme - Russell Brand: In Plain Sight - here: https://www.channel4.com/programmes/russell-brand-in-plain-sight-dispatchesArtwork by Daff KjellströmMusic by Lyle FultonGet in touch via lyle@dimoso.com or info@dimoso.comMore information at www.dimoso.com and www.therestispr.comFollow us on Twitter - @TheRestIsPR Hosted on Acast. Nicole Snell had a successful career in the entertainment industry but then switched to leading workshops on self-defense in life and the outdoors. How and why?Hiking safelyI first became aware of Nicole Snell when she popped up in my Instagram timeline. At the time I was converting a video series on safely solo hiking among mountains into a podcast.Where I focussed on the technical aspects of safely hiking mountains and frankly any other Natural environment, Nicole brought to my attention an aspect which I never truly considered. And though I am loath to say it, an aspect that is especially important to solo female hikers — even more so when those female hikers are part of the BIPOC community — the community of people that are Black, Indigenous and people of colour. The fact that I never even thought about that element of hiking safely likely has to do with the fact that I'm over six feet tall, have a rather low voice for a woman, have very short hair and because of it have often been mistaken for a man. However, it also says volumes about the white privilege with which I move through the world. When I started following BIPOC people in the outdoor space on social media, it became clear to me how safety is something they have to take into consideration in a way that until then had never even occurred to me.I invited Nicole to be a guest on the podcast because she clearly is someone who practices self-leadership and has a strong connection with Nature. I did not invite her to specifically talk about the outdoor experience of BIPOC people though I'm sure it will be part of our conversation as that experience is also Nicole's.So let me tell introduce you to Nicole.Nicole Snell - a total badassShe is a dynamic and award-winning international speaker and self-defense expert specializing in sexual assault & violence prevention education, boundaries and personal empowerment. She is the CEO of Girls Fight Back, the world-renowned personal safety and self-defense seminar for women and girls, and is the creator of Outdoor Defense, an online series that aims to help women stay safe while enjoying the outdoors or travelling solo.Nicole is an avid solo traveller, outdoor enthusiast and adventurer having visited 26 countries on 6 continents to date and is an adventure leader for Black Girls Trekkin.Nicole is a NACP Credentialed Advocate and sits on the board for IMPACT Personal Safety in addition to being a Lead Instructor. She has travelled the world speaking to groups at colleges, K-12, corporations, the US military and private events.  She believes that everyone has the right to walk through the world feeling safe, powerful and confident! Follow Nicole via her website, Instagram and YouTube channel

Mattel went through three chief executives in four years before Ynon Kreiz took the job in 2018. He stood the test of time in part because of a big bet: taking Mattel's toys to Hollywood. The toy giant is partnering with Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie to bring Barbie to life on the big screen, and creating films based on everything from UNO to Magic 8 Ball. It's a strategy that draws on Kreiz's past experience at entertainment companies like Maker Studios and Endemol, and one that draws inspiration from franchises like Transformers and companies like Lego, which Kreiz says was able to make “great movies out of bricks.”In this conversation, Kara Swisher stress tests Kreiz's strategy, asking whether these potential movie franchises are any more than glorified marketing and what a movie based on the Magic 8 Ball may look like. (Reply hazy, try again.) They also discuss the future of play in an age of video games and smartphones, and when Mattel might introduce a transgender Barbie. Oh, and Kara pitches her own media franchise mash-up: a Teletubbies movie directed by Martin Scorsese. You can find transcripts (posted midday) and more information for all episodes at nytimes.com/sway, and you can find Kara on Twitter @karaswisher.
