If you know the movie “This Is Spinal Tap,” you will certainly recall the moment Spinal Tap bassist Derek Smalls describes himself as the band conduit, "David and Nigel are like poets, you know, like Shelley or Byron, or people like that. The two totally distinct types of visionaries, it's like fire and ice, and I feel my role in the band is to be kind of the middle of that, kind of like lukewarm water.” Well, on today's Quick Tap, our guests tell us about the times they left puddles of themselves for a higher purpose. Songwriter Freedy Johnston introduces Lou Reed and Joey Ramone; author and rapscallion Scott Nathan recounts the time he connected Leonardo DiCaprio to a Martin Scorsese flick; and The Pulsars Dave Trumfio reminisces about how he got a rise out of Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher with rock legend Cynthia Plaster Caster.

Thankfully, we have Jenifer Freedy on the show to help us understand the Neuroscience of Parenting and secure attachment!Jenifer is a brilliant psychotherapist with the knowledge and intention of helping us support our nervous systems. With Jen's help, we get into some of the issues we see in family disconnection nowadays, and how we can better support ourselves and our children. Live from the Lyric Theatre in Lexington, Kentucky. woodsongs.com Production Date: 10/17/22 FREEDIE JOHNSTON had a huge hit called “Bad Reputation” and throughout his 25-year career, he has developed a loyal following with his finely detailed story songs. Freedy was born in the small town of Kinsley, Kansas, famous for being the exact mid-point between the east and west coasts of the USA. He bought a mail order guitar as a teenager after hearing Elvis Costello's My Aim Is True.Rain on the City is his first album of new originals in eight years. WILDFIRE was formed in 2000 as the house bluegrass band at Dollywood and quickly became one of the most talked about groups in the bluegrass world. With chart topping CDs and fan favorite songs led by founding members Robert Hale and Curt Chapman, they are surrounded by stellar musicians: Johnny Lewis, Scott Napier, and Matt DeSpain their new album is “Quiet Country Town” on Pinecastle Records. Owen Brockman is a 12 year old banjo picker from Centerville, OH who has been listening to bluegrass since he was 2 years old!
Today we get back to updates and gripes and whatnot. Our guest is Freedy Johnston a great singer/songwriter whose history matches up with the best of them. We love hearing Freedy tell the story of walking through South by Southwest in Austin, Texas and stopping in his tracks when he hears Susan Cowsill singing and what that all led to. Freedy discusses his career and his brand new September 9th album release "Back On The Road To You" which features a great song with our sister Susan called 'The Power of Love.
Freedy Johnston's Can You Fly album landed on a number of 1992 best-of lists, with legendary music critic Robert Christgau calling it "a perfect album” and penning the following about the record: “Contained, mature, realistic in philosophy and aesthetic, its every song a model of open-ended lyrical detail and lithe, sly melodicism, it's a flat-out monument of singer-songwriterdom--up there with Randy Newman's 12 Songs, Joni Mitchell's For the Roses, and other such prepunk artifacts.” Not too shabby. But the peak of Johnston's fame came with the 1995 single “Bad Reputation” from the follow-album, This Perfect World, produced by Butch Vig (Nirvana, Garbage, Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth, et al). Johnston has been out there slogging it out ever since, releasing an ongoing career's worth of albums filled with incisive songs delivered in his trademark reedy tenor voice. Johnston first joined us on Independent's Day for episode #62 in December of 2012, and he was kind enough to return just in time for the release of his brand-new album, Back On the Road to You (Forty Below Records - 9/9/22). Joe and Freedy had a wide-ranging discussion that ranged from the making his new album, the perils of social media in a divided society, and how eager he is to get back on the road to play shows after being sidelined by the Covid-19 pandemic. He also treated us to three exclusive live performances of “There Goes a Brooklyn Girl,” “Somewhere Love,” and “Tryin' to Move On” - three new gems from Back On the Road to You.
Today's guest is singer/songwriter Freedy Johnston. Freedy's one of those rare singer-songwriters who counts critics among his biggest fans — and whose heroes consider him a peer. In 1994 Rolling Stone named Johnston the ‘Songwriter of the Year', describing him as “A master storyteller, (who) sketches out full-blown tragedies in a few poetic lines, and he joins that elite cadre of songwriters—Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Elvis Costello. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/brian-doherty8/support

Disfrutadla.

Happy Summer to you all. It was July outside, but cool and dark in The Living Room. Goodbye Ludlow Street? Not so fast. Hi Guys!!!!!! This week's HWYW features a musical legend playing his purty songs in my kitchen, and a lot of other fun stuff as well. First and foremost, FREEDY JOHNSTON is here to play a few songs and tell us some stories within petting distance of Jimmy Jazz. Enjoy Freedy's beautiful renditions of BAD REPUTATION, THE MORTICIAN'S DAUGHTER, SEVENTIES GIRL, and his cover of THE LOOK OF LOVE, plus a haunting version of the first song he ever wrote--SPARKY THE HEROIC DOG. Also, after watching THE SOURCE FAMILY documentary, Julie throws her hat in the ring to become the first-ever female cult leader, and sets the criteria for what will be expected from her followers. Plus: why WICHITA LINEMAN is such a haunting song (it's UNFINISHED!), how those post-feminist vibrator parties actually make us feel, the quandry of porn, the sensitivity of The Long Island Princesses when it comes to 9/11 heroes, and what it must be like to be Robin Thicke. A wonderful and very special show for you to enjoy! Viva la Freedy!
After Rolling Stone and Spin hailed his 1992 release, “Can You Fly” a masterpiece, its success led to a major label deal with Elektra (produced by Butch Vig), for whom Johnston released “This Perfect World in 1994, which included his breakthrough hit, “Bad Reputation”. Other critically acclaimed albums followed and critics have continue to praise Johnston effusively, solidifying his reputation as one of the finest and most singular voices in the singer-songwriter genre. Splitting his time between NYC and Madison, you may have caught Freedy in past years in rare Madison shows with Garbage alums, Butch Vig and Doug Erikson and Madison main-stays James “Pie Cown, Bill “Stick” Bielefeld and Jay Moran in their clandestine cover-band, The Know-It-All-Boyfriends. www.freedyjohnston.com
