Kris Myers was born on April 5, 1977. Receiving a drum kit at the age of 8, he took an early interest in jazz, rock and punk music. During high school Myers co-started his first musical outfit, a ska/punk band called the Skalawags. The group received a decent amount of success but denied an offer to tour Japan to instead pursue college degrees. Myers attended Elmhurst College from 1995 – 1999 where he was a music major and the drummer in the Elmhurst College Jazz Band. Under director Doug Beach, the Elmhurst College Jazz Band played gigs in the U.S. and Internationally at events such as the Umbria Jazz Festival, Jakarta Jazz Festival and the Montreaux Jazz Festival. In 2001 Myers enrolled in DePaul University where he earned his master's degree in jazz drumming and was a member of the Rob Parton Orchestra. In addition to his involvement in school bands, Myers was playing in festivals with a variety of jazz artists such as Nicholas Payton, Diane Schuur, Randy Brecker, Dennis DiBlasio as well as local musicians Mark Colby and John McLean. Myers also was a member of Chicago jazz fusion band Kick the Cat. Myers began playing drums for progressive-rock band Umphrey's McGee in 2003 following the departure of original drummer Mike Mirro. With Myers at the helm, Umphrey's has released ten albums and maintains a rigorous touring schedule of over 100 live shows per year. Umphrey's has performed at legendary festivals and venues such as Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Fuji Rock Festival, South by Southwest, Red Rocks, The Ryman Theatre, The Beacon Theatre and more. With Umphrey's, Myers has shared the stage with countless notable musicians such as Buddy Guy, Huey Lewis, Ivan Neville, Les Claypool, Stephen Perkins, Mike Keneally, Joshua Redman, Bela Fleck, Taj Mahal, Victor Wooten, Adrian Belew, Stanley Jordan, Gene Ween, Derek Trucks and Jason Bonham. In 2011 Myers was honored with the title of Best Jam Band Drummer by DRUM Magazine, beating jamband stalwarts such as Butch Trucks (The Allman Brothers) and Jon Fishman (Phish). In 2018, Myers was featured on the cover of Modern Drummer's July issue. Myers placed second in the Experimental Rock category of the publication's “Readers Poll Awards” behind St. Vincent drummer Matt Johnson. When he's not behind the drum kit, Myers enjoys playing golf, attending concerts, hiking and collecting art. This week, we have Corrosion of Conformity bassist Mike Dean on the show! During our chat, we discuss their North American tour running all the way until November 27th, performing on Thanksgiving Day this year, celebrating the band's 40th year, and why frequent collaborator and producer John Custer is vital to their sound. We also learn about that time he was left a Texas Circle K barefoot, how Gene Ween helped with long distant phone calls in the pre-cell phone days, what happened if you performed with the SWANS and smiled on stage in the 90's, and the tours that he feels were his all time favorites. The show also has Petar and Sylvia discussing the passing of stand-up comedian Gallagher, my opportunity to go onstage and use the famous Sledge-O-Matic, our thoughts on any kind of Type O Negative reunion, and Nergal's comments about “kids getting a proper job” instead of starting a band. Our 2nd foray into the rock and roll enigma that is Ween, this time diving into their sixth studio album The Mollusk with special guest and super-fan Les Norris. Pegged as a favorite by both Gene and Dean Ween - as well as purportedly being the inspiration for Spongebob Squarepants - it's a dark but surprisingly tuneful multi-genre concept album that flits from psychedelia to sea shanties as only they can. "Bring forth the mollusk, cast unto me Let's be forever, let forever be free" Songs featured in this episode: Loop de Loop - Ween; Chances When - Radiobaghdad; Shakedown Street - Grateful Dead; Brain Damage - Pink Floyd; Spongebob Squarepants Theme Song - Patrick Pinney; Are My Ears On Straight? - Gayla Peevey; I'm Dancing In The Show Tonight, The Mollusk - Ween; I've Seen All Good People - Yes; Wonderboy - Tenacious D; Polka Dot Tail, I'll Be Your Johnny On The Spot - Ween; Spinning Wheel - Blood Sweat & Tears; Octopus - Syd Barrett; My Monkey - Marilyn Manson & The Spooky Kids; Mutilated Lips, The Blarney Stone, It's Gonna Be Alright, The Golden Eel - Ween; Green Machine - Kyuss; Doctor Rock (live) - Ween; The Unquiet Grave - Luke Kelly; Cold Blows The Wind, Pink Eye (On My Leg), Waving My Dick In The Wind - Ween; Jar Of Cardinals - Guided By Voices; Buckingham Green, Ocean Man, Pollo Asado, She Wanted To Leave - Ween; Sears & Applebees - Les Norris

There are three people on this planet. The ones that prefer the Shitless radio edit of Push Th' Little Daisies, the ones that prefer the Happier Than Shit album version and the ones that just want to watch the world burn. As Dean & Gene Ween famously said "Oh, you think darkness is your ally. But you merely adopted the dark; I was born in it, moulded by it. I didn't see the light until I was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but BLINDING!"Make sure you subscribe to the Cookie & Cream Podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts! When we finished taping our Season Two premiere on Santana’s Supernatural, we realized we had too much good material for one episode. So this week we’re airing a bonus episode featuring our full interview with guitarist Matt Sweeney (Superwolf, Chavez) and many other great projects, which you heard snippets from in the premiere. We talk plenty of Santana, but also get into stranger waters, including Matt’s high school days hanging with Dean and Gene Ween, his forthcoming duo album with Bonnie “Prince” Billy, and his role in the great late era Bee Gees record that never was. Please consider reviewing this podcast on Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. We invite you to join us for Season 2 Episode 2, coming March 25! Ween set forth on a career-long ambition to tear down standard music industry conventions by hook or by crook. To take that which is weird, obnoxious, and unclean, and show it as important as the falsely pristine parts of life. They were never more successful in this endeavor than on their 76 minute slog of a second record, The Pod. Recorded alone together in Dean and Gene Ween's apartment that was a converted barn smack dab in the middle of a horse field while both were suffering through mono and high on, well, probably everything. The record sounds like you need to scrape off layers and layers of shit and grime to get the pop tunes hidden within. Underneath the juvenile jokes, the impressive assemblage of vulgarity, fast food orders, molasses-dipped song-smithing, sonic fuckery, squishy atmosphere, and overall friendly misanthropic posturing is a solid and comprehensive American pop music revue. Dinner theater at the slaughterhouse. So, tonight's offering...another scoop of isolation but this time with a heaping of flies, scotch guard, and glandular fever. If you've ever woken up and found that someone had taken a deuce on your kitchen floor, you've already sort of heard this masterpiece. The sludgiest, brownest record of Ween's illustrious decades long trouncing of indie music. Come on, it's a beautiful night for a walk on the beach, wouldn't you say?Listen to Fewer Owls, mentioned in this episode!Highway Hi-Fi is a proud member of the Pantheon Music Podcast Network - Home of the Finest Music Podcasts

Business or performance? According to Dave Godowsky, you don't have to choose, guys. As a professional music fan for nearly 3 decades, Dave has been an artist manager, A&R rep and several other kinds of music industry types. All the while, he's weaved in and out the singer/songwriter/performer, for which he has a great talent for. Dave's genuine good hearted nature has gotten him the trust, talent and time of many impressive well known musicians like Bon Iver, Gene Ween (of Ween), Adam Duritz and Lianne La Havas. He's also well connected to many smaller music communities. One of those communities was essential to his songwriting in the last ten or so years: The Subrosa Songwriting Retreat that takes place on Three Mile Island in Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire. Dave talks about how this retreat has allowed him to piece together enough songs for his last few album. His newest album, Cuts (out Feb 28), is this beautiful calming album dotted with lovely harp and woodwinds. During production, he was concentrating on keeping the band zen and working to create a" musical Xanax." He said" “if people were having a panic attack, they could put this on and it would calm them.” It's a great album and hope you go listen to it when it's out on Feb 28!

God Ween Evan continues its periodic interview series, where someone in or around Ween and the Ween community chews the fat with the team. Next up is Ashton Freeman. Ashton is not only the child of Gene Ween, but an extremely talented musician in their own right. Ashton is a 20 year old multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter from Brooklyn, New York, currently working towards their BA in Music from Goucher College. Ashton has been involved in music their entire life, starting early in Paul Green’s School of Rock at age 8. There, they first performed on stage in venues such as the Highline Ballroom and The Knitting Factory. Ashton released an EP (You Make Me Happy, produced by Chris Harford) in 2016, and is currently working on their first full-length album. In this episode, one which concludes with Ashton performing two songs exclusively for the GWE audience, Ashton speaks on their musical influences, when they first came to realize how remarkable Ween was, their songwriting processes, and much more. Follow Ashton at: ashtonfreeman@bandcamp.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Of course Dean Ween is one of the founders of Ween, a band that has been putting out albums since 1990, though they haven’t had any new albums in a while. But he's also the leader of the Dean Ween Group, which just put out a new record, called "Rock 2." Now, my conversation with Dean is interesting. This was my second time talking to him, and I think he’s generally a friendly, funny, and gregarious guy. But I think you’ll notice that he’s also a little wary about delving too deep into his relationship with Gene Ween, his long-time partner in Ween. The state of their reunion is good but perhaps fragile. But Dean has plenty to say about this own music and his renewed passion for touring. I also talk with Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic.com about Ween's career and our favorite Ween albums.
If the name Michael Melchiondo does not ring a bell, it’s because he is known professionally by his stage name of Dean Ween, one half of the band Ween, who for nearly 30 years—along with Gene Ween (whose real name is Aaron Freeman)—have been releasing into the world a very unique style of music. Deaner (as he is also known) is currently touring with the Dean Ween Group—which features all of the touring members of Ween, minus Gener—and the Dean Ween Group have an album called Rock2, coming out in March. The full lineup of Ween has also recently announced their first show of the summer at Red Rocks in Colorado on June 5th. Melchiondo and Freeman met in 1984, adopting the Ween surname in their early teenage years, but for Melchiondo, his love for music began with his father.
This week: The Beastie Boys’ Mike D injects life (and caffeine) into museum-going… Lizz Winstead, comedienne and co-creator of the Daily Show, exposes herself… Gene Ween plays Rod McKuen… The descendants of Emily Post on cupcake etiquette… Ballet Lessons from a dancer-director… And a little piece of Heaven, courtesy of The Walkmen. Plus, genius delinquents, Eiffel Towers of booze, and a joke about burning ambition.
Perhaps in love you'll stay... with us!
Lots of good talk and tunes here. Paul Stanley from Kiss talks about why he's immortal. Bob Nastanovich from Pavement talks about losing his shirt by breeding horses. Best Coast gets busted by the Song Sleuth, and we also talk with Gene Ween, the drummer from Dungen and Brian Fallon from the Gaslight Anthem, the latter of whom selects a Bob Dylan tune as this month's Holy Craft. We kick the show off with a kickin' song by Bodega Girls and we have a MMMPod Medley that will kick your ass.
Today I'm talking to my old friend John “Harsh” Harshman, and together we're getting balls deep into Buckethead's Pikes 309-311 (Cosmic Oven, In the Laboratory of Doctor Septimus Pretorius, and Funace Follies), we also talk about how Harsh saw Buckethead without the mask and bucket while working security for a festival, Britain has never sucked dick for weed (but has for free), what does Primus smell like?, Shaq talks about the Papa John's buyout, boofing a no-doz, working in a drywall factory, Don King the weird weasly chicken dude, burning Whole Foods to the ground, capitalism is bukkake, Slayer has one album, chatting with Chris Barnes and Gene Ween, our big 4s, better than bullion vs. regular bullion, Marvel shouldn't make a movie about Buckethead, Buckethead on PBS, George Carlin and the P-Funk Allstars, Letterkenny, alienating music, drum programming is hard, gettin brown with ween, Beat Street (1984), and sports guys.
