Journalist and podcaster Carvell Wallace regularly contributes to the New York Times Magazine, and has written cover profiles for Rolling Stone, GQ, and Esquire. His intimate, often heartbreaking essays address everything from the end of Barack Obama's presidency, to the connections between cowboy poetry and forgotten histories of Black people, to the possibility that his mother would have wanted an abortion. Wallace's new memoir, Another Word For Love, looks back on his own life, from experiencing homelessness with his mother to raising two teenagers in a disturbingly violent and precarious world. In 2019, Wallace co-wrote The Sixth Man with Andre Iguodala of the Golden State Warriors.  On May 16, 2024, Carvell Wallace came to the Sydney Goldstein Theater in San Francisco to be interviewed on stage by artist and visual journalist George McCalman, whose books include Illustrated Black History.

Today, I interview George McCalman who has always found solace in his art, which has served as a safe haven for him to freely express his thoughts and feelings. Against all odds, he rose. An African American in a white neighborhood, he defied discrimination. With creativity as his weapon, he forged his path to self-discovery.McCalman is an artist and creative director based in San Francisco. He is known for his design studio, McCalman Co., which collaborates with a diverse range of cultural clients. George is also a columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle, where he documents Bay Area culture in his observed and first-person columns. His first book, "Illustrated Black History: Honoring The Iconic and Unseen," was published in 2022.George's journey has not been without its struggles, having experienced the challenges of finding his voice and identity as an artist. Growing up in Grenada and later moving to New York City, George had to navigate being a young boy in a new educational system and culture. However, his introspective nature, sensitivity, and keen observations of the world around him shaped his perspective and artistic talents. With the influence of his mother and grandmother, George discovered his love for art and storytelling at a young age. Despite initially doubting his identity as an artist, he eventually embraced it and found his voice through the creation of meaningful illustrations. George's artistic journey has been marked by a pivotal moment in Mexico City, where he realized that he could merge his roles as an artist and art director. Since then, he has dedicated himself to both disciplines, continuing to explore and celebrate the stories and histories of marginalized voices in America through his art.Join us as we delve into the world of George McCalman, witnessing the profound impact of his artistry, and discovering the resilience and determination that have propelled him on this extraordinary journey. Prepare to be captivated by his unique vision, as we explore how one individual's struggle can become an unyielding source of inspiration for us all.__________________Educated as a fine art painter with a focus on philosophy, McCalman defines himself as an artist and creative director. In practice, that means he illustrates, designs, and writes about the complex concepts he explores in his work.Other than being an artist, he is a creative director and Co-Principal of McCalman.Co. His background in the editorial world is a foundation of his storytelling, and his fine art practice has reframed his perspective on the importance of design. A culture columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle, McCalman's first book Illustrated Black History: Honoring the Iconic and the Unseen won the 2023 NAACP Award for Outstanding Literary Work as well as profound accolades by The New Yorker's Hilton Als, NPR, New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Fast Company and many others.__________________Find George here:https://www.mccalman.co/https://www.linkedin.com/in/george-mccalman-7b705a5/https://www.facebook.com/mccalman.cohttps://www.instagram.com/george.mccalman/ https://www.harpercollins.com/products/illustrated-black-history-george-mccalman?variant=39981632782370Support the showI'm Dr. Doreen Downing and I help people find their voice so they can speak without fear. Mrs. TNTBS hosts George McCalman as he gives us a fresh approach to Black History. In a first of its kind achievement - artist, author, and graphic designer GEORGE MCCALMAN has created a book that reimagines our idea of Black History and brings to the fore a vivid array of pioneers. Appropriately titled ILLUSTRATED BLACK HISTORY- this is a beautifully illustrated keepsake collection. Each of the 145 Black heroes celebrated in this book is revealed by a dazzling painting or drawing and an insightful short biography of the remarkable pioneer's contribution to activism, science, politics, business, medicine, technology, food, entertainment, or the arts. From determining the subjects, to the design of the pages, to illustrating the portraits and images throughout, McCalman has created a book reflective of his subjects who paved the way when no road existed. McCalman first began crafting the portraits of Black pioneers in honor of Black History Month more than six years ago, an obsessive artistic endeavor that would evolve into a carefully curated collection of soulful portraits celebrating Black icons throughout America's 400-year-old history. Creating equal space to celebrate legends and discover Black heroes who have gone unseen, McCalman's comprehensive work features trailblazers we recognize and those we should know. This is American history. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tntbsmedia/message

We'd love if you shared this email with a friend who might want to #TalkCookbooks with us, too:Episode 138: Nicole TaylorNicole Taylor—author of Watermelon & Red Birds—joins us this week to #TalkCookbooks.A Georgia native, Nicole pivoted to a career in food media when she relocated to Brooklyn with her husband in 2008. Her Heritage Radio Network podcast, Hot Grease, brought 162 episodes with an emphasis on highlighting Black food personalities and “reclaiming culinary traditions & celebrations, cooking at home and eating as a political act.”That led to a couple of cookbooks: first, writing The Last O.G. Cookbook (yes, the cookbook-companion to the Tracy Morgan TBS comedy), and Nicole's first solo project, The Up South Cookbook: Chasing Dixie in a Brooklyn Kitchen, which pairs her Georgia culinary roots with New York influences. After a stint at a major media company, Nicole embarked on her latest cookbook, Watermelon & Red Birds: A Cookbook for Juneteenth and Black Celebrations. In the book, Nicole explores the history of Juneteenth—a history full of complexity, difficulty, and sorrow. Federal recognition of a holiday long recognized by Black communities in America only came in June 2021, amidst the pandemic, a national focus on long-standing racial inequality, and the unjust deaths of Black folks at the hands of police. As Nicole writes in her introduction, “Black joy often emanates from Black sorrow, and so it has been with that small Texas tendril of freedom, which has continued to spread and strengthen.” This cookbook is not just a historical text; it's quite modern, and Nicole hopes it will be part of the ongoing conversation around Black food in America. Not only as a chronicle of the ways that Black ingenuity and cooking have shaped America's food scene, but also how it will shape the 21st Century. In today's episode, Nicole tells about growing up in Georgia, making the leap into food writing professionally, working with past S+S guest George McCalman to design a book that “breaks all the rules,” and the importance of finding joy where it has not always been afforded.I hope you enjoy my chat with Nicole.Bonus Content + Recipes This WeekRECIPES!!!This week, paid subscribers will receive. two featured recipes from Nicole Taylor's Watermelon & Red Birds: the Southern-ish Potato Salad and a Sweet Potato Spritz inspired by Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man. "And so you're asking a lot of somebody who's reading a cookbook. You're kind of engaging them, you know, head, heart, and hands, really. It's this very different way of relating to a book than you are to an art book. And that's why I love designing cookbooks because there's a creative aspect to it, but there's also a very practical aspect, too. And you have to kind of keep that balance in mind whenever you're designing." —Frances Baca, book designer and creative directorThis is the third episode in our four-part series, Behind the Spine. In this series, we've shifted focus away from the authors to hear from some of the talented folks who work behind the scenes to create the beautiful cookbooks that we all love.  You’ve already heard from the recipe testers and photographers, and today we’ll hear from the folks who bring that content together into one book: the graphic designers. We’ll start with a peek into the mind of Frances Baca. She’ll teach us about typographic details that can set a book apart from the rest, how she begins a new design project, and the characteristics that make cookbook design special. Frances designed her first cookbook at 7 years old: “Snacks,” the homemade cookbook, featured a green construction paper cover with a yarn binding. Frances has always known that she wanted to design books—and not just cookbooks, though that’s what we’ll focus on today. She studied design at Rhode Island School of Design, where she learned to pay close attention to the minuscule details that can make books so special. She talks about sticking up for her readers and the unique challenge of designing a cookbook, which she says ought to be a multi-sensory experience. Because cookbooks are also practical books that we use in our day-to-day lives, Frances stresses the importance of accessibility in her work: everything from making the font large enough to read to ensuring the spine lays flat on the countertop. You’ll also hear from San Francisco-based artist and graphic designer, George McCalman whose work spans different industries, though he focuses mostly on clients in food media and the art world. He opened the doors to his own design studio, McCalman Co. in 2011, where he works on branding for clients and does projects like cookbook design. Prior to starting his own business, he worked for award-winning magazines including ReadyMade, Mother Jones, and Entertainment Weekly. Today, we zoom in on his design process for Black Food, the first publication for author Bryant Terry’s imprint, 4 Color Books. George talks to us about flipping the traditional design model upside down, facilitating collaboration between all the folks on the creative team, and how he sees himself as a graphic designer: as a steward of information. Alison Bechdel‘s cult following for her early comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For grew wildly in response to her family memoirs, the best-selling graphic memoir Fun Home, adapted into a Tony Award-winning musical, and Are You My Mother? She has become a cultural household name for the concept of the Bechdel Test, a metric used when considering the representation of women in film. Bechdel has been named a MacArthur Fellow and Cartoonist Laureate of Vermont, among many other honors. On May 7, 2021, she talked to artist George McCalman about her latest book “The Secret to Superhuman Strength”.  It's a history of exercise trends, from Jack LaLanne in the 1960s to spin classes and yoga studios.  It's also a very personal examination of Bechdel's own fascination with fitness.

Our awareness of an "ism" can lead to loneliness, and in George McCalman's case, that ism was racism. After living much of his life in New York City feeling part of the community, he suddenly felt like an outsider, because of an episode at a magazine where he worked in his twenties.
