During Black History Month this year I featured a group of five exceptional singers I dubbed, for lack of a better term, “Forgotten Divas.” Each of these women, sopranos Delcina Stevenson, Annabelle Bernard, and Veronica Tyler, mezzo-soprano Gwendolyn Killebrew, and jazz singer Ethel Ennis, represents the peak of achievement in each of their respective fachs. These proved to be among the most popular and far-reaching of my recent episodes. At that time, I promised my listeners that I would continue to seek out rare recordings of each of these women and that, if and when such material surfaced, I would be sure to share it with my listeners. True to my promise, I present a brand-new episode featuring (for the most part) newly discovered material with each of these singers: a live Washington Opera Ariodante from 1971 and a live Carnegie Hall Orfeo ed Euridice from 1967, both with Veronica Tyler; live original language performances of Puccini's Il tabarro and Meyerbeer's Le Prophète from the stage of the Deutsche Oper Berlin which starred Annabelle Bernard; Gwendolyn Killebrew singing the Habanera from Carmen, one of her most celebrated roles, as well as the Waldtaube in Schoenberg's Gurrelieder; rare studio recordings of Delcina Stevenson singing Bach and Vivaldi from the early 1970s; and live material featuring Ethel Ennis over the course of nearly fifty years of her career, 1958 through 2005. As more of this material resurfaces, I will present further episodes of this new “Rescue Mission” series featuring both these singers and others I have already featured on the podcast, performing material that adds to our understanding and appreciation of their artistry. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. Africville, a little community in Nova Scotia, comprised mostly Black Nova Scotians and existed from the early 1800s to the mid-1960s. It has become an important symbol of black Canadian identity and the struggles against racism, as many of its first settlers were former slaves fleeing oppression in the US. Some may feel that racism in Canada is a thing of the past but consider these stats: According to Statistics Canada, 58% of black people aged 15 and older reported experiencing race-based discrimination in the five years prior to Covid, and in 2021, just under one-third of black Canadians, representing over 400,000 Canadians, lived in unsuitable housing, compared to less than 10% of the entire Canadian population.  Stats like these and stories like Africville make today's conversation so compelling.  During Black History Month this past February, the educational charity I Am Compelled created a documentary to share Africville's story with young Canadians, with over 16,000 students having viewed the program as of the filming of this interview.  Here with us are Veshone Cunningham and Crystal Lavallee of I Am Compelled to discuss how the documentary is creating conversation and the constructive change they hope it will bring. Thanks for joining us.____________________________Faytene.tv is a listener-supported program. Back on the mics again at last with our second Mixed Bag show of February 2023, to finish off the shortest month of the year. In the first half, Kerry shares more about her recently revealed consulting website, Kay Consulting, which ties in to the recent announcement, by Puffin Books in the UK, regarding updates made to the language in many of Roald Dahl's children's stories, in order to make them more inclusive for these times. So we discuss the authenticity consulting services on Kerry's KC and how the work relates with the questions some have with changing a book's language vs doing better in the current moment when writing new stories and how authors like Dahl was then and the responsibility of writers now. How does Kerry handle these matters on her new site? Also, she's working on the earliest concept and draft of a book idea all about living with a prosthetic eye since age twelve. During some reading lately for a feminist horror literature and creative writing class, one of the books on the syllabus was Beloved by Toni Morrison. During Black History Month, she began doing research on the ways in which people have lost eyes, specifically when black people have lost eyes or their vision (both eyes or one or the other) do to systemic violence through the years. This includes civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer and a decorated World War II veteran in the 1940s. And in the second half of the show, Brian shares details of his latest local London music scene night out, along with some audio from a 2017 trip to Iceland with an old friend, in order to illustrate the point of an article Kerry came across. It's an article by writer Jennifer Stavros about the benefits of recording sound, instead of the more common act of taking photos when traveling. They talk over the existing impact Covid has had, when lockdowns were keeping us all at home and how we (as blind people and sighted alike) can come to experience the joys of life once more and learn to step back out into the world again (shaking hands again), all things opening wider as the virus slips more and more into the background of our lives with every passing day, week, and month. How to foster greater inclusion and how far to go, going beyond the “culture wars” as war of any kind becomes destructive, and wrapping up this Mixed Bag discussion with the merits of “echoic memory” which you can find more on in this BBC article, “Why We Should Record Travel Moments” referenced in our second half: https://www.bbc.com/travel/article/20230209-why-we-should-record-travel-moments

In a memorandum issued on February 8, the UCI indicated it will ban riders from racing with their forearms on their handlebars, in a time-trial like position, when on a road bike. Last week, the UCI indicated it would begin to enforce the rule prohibiting riders from the ‘super tuck’ descending position, where a rider sits on the top tube and curls into a tight position on a downhill. The news was greeted with mixed feelings, and VeloNews debated the merits of the rule and the UCI’s renewed interest in enforcing it. Both rules will start being enforced — and this is apparently not a joke — on April 1.   Diversity in US cycling: How inclusion is being 'built from the ground up' During Black History Month, we check in with the national federation about its new grant programme. My Quest For Quotes - Weekly Motivational Quotes

This is episode number 34 of the My Quest For Quotes podcast. The title of this week’s episode is, Challenge Accepted   During Black History Month we are looking at quotes that are related to Black History, but I’m trying to NOT consider the customary names that come up each year in February.    We first looked at the artist who was ahead of his time, Otis Redding Jr. Then we looked at an example of, what I considered to be great parenting from my FaceBook friend Krischa Esquivel, author of “Losing Control, A Guide To Successful Non-Violent Parenting.   Last week I asked the question, Is Gregg Popovich Right? Gregg Popovich, the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs declared that the U.S. is a racist country. Check out episode number 33 for more on that.    This week is the final episode for Black History Month. I simply had to take this week’s quote from the recently released Marvel Comics movie, “Black Panther.”   Black Panther is an absolutely great movie! Actually, using a quote from the movie is an excuse for me to talk about the movie especially seeing that it is Black History Month.    The quote comes from King T’Challa aka The Black Panther played by Chadwick Boseman. He makes the same quote in two separate scenes in the movie. The quote is, “I accept your challenge.”   Each time that he made this statement, the fate of the country that he loved, Wakanda, was at stake. And, each time his challenger, at least physically, was bigger and stronger than the king when stripped of his special powers. Yet, each time he accepted the challenge.    To me, this is a great metaphor for us when we have to face the challenges of everyday life. And make no mistake about it life is full of challenges. For us, just like for the mythical character king T’Challa, even if we accept the challenge there is no guarantee of success.   I hope that you would agree with me that the magic sauce is actually in the trying!   Ok, let’s talk about the movie! Don’t worry, if you’re one of the few people that haven’t seen the movie yet, I’m not going to spoil the movie for you at all!   First of all, I am not a Marvel Comic person at all. Second of all, I’m not really that much of a Marvel Comic movie person either. Until now, my favorite Marvel movie was The Avengers! Well, after the opening day of Black Panther, I have a new favorite Marvel movie!   I absolutely loved everything about Black Panther. The pageantry, the plot, the plot twists, the acting, the directing, the cinematography I loved it all.   To be honest I didn’t get caught up in any of the lead up to the movie, because again, I’m not much of a Marvel Movie person. If I’m remembering correctly, prior to Black Panther, I had never seen a Marvel movie at the theatre, ever.   So, a good friend of mine texted me sometime after 8pm on opening night saying he was thinking about seeing the movie around 9:30, I said let me know if you do and I’ll meet you there. I knew I wasn’t going to take my wife to see a Marvel movie, so I was like why not!   I didn’t know what to expect!   All of the main characters were played perfectly by the actors, every actor landed the right roll. My favorite main character actually had the fewest scenes of all the other main characters.    M’Baku, leader of the Jabari tribe, played by actor Winston Duke. Duke dominated every scene that he was in. You’ll be seeing more of him in the future. One of the things that hurts him in getting rolls is the fact that he is 6’5” tall.    The other character that jumped off the screen was Okoye, the General of the Wakandan army played by Danai Gurira. She was electric!   My immediate impression at the end of the movie, was that Black Panther wasn’t a great Marvel movie, it wasn’t a great Black movie, it was a great movie PERIOD!   It has everything!   Drama Intrigue Action  Betrayal Family Loyalty  Hope Honor Revenge Bravery   A great movie indeed!
