Songkran is a festival from Southeast Asia marking the new year and celebrating making a fresh start. This special program includes a program discussion hosted by Michelle Meow featuring conversations on cultural heritage, community impact, and empowerment initiatives; cultural performances, including traditional dances, live music, and storytelling sessions; a traditional water blessing ceremony; and delicious authentic Southeast Asian cuisine prepared by local chefs. About the Speakers Kesinee Angkustsiri Yip has been helping companies, organizations, and executives manage their reputations for more than two decades. An award-winning communications strategist recognized by the International Association of Business Communications, she co- founded Creative Catalyst (www.creativecatalystworks.com) to address culture and connection challenges—the things AI does not—by bringing improv into the workplace. While improv can be funny, it's not just for the theater. Improv techniques can help entrepreneurs and leaders as well as customer-facing, sales, HR, and DEI teams reduce anxiety, cultivate safe spaces, and encourage creativity. Her book, “Yes, and...” for Success: Improv Secrets to Supercharge Professional Creativity and Connection is out on Amazon and available at Bay Area bookstores. Kesinee has performed at BATS Improv and has led workshops and trainings in the United States and abroad. Kesinee is on the Board of the Asian Women's Shelter in San Francisco (www.sfaws.org) and is active with the LEAD-LISA Startup Incubator (www.gsb-lead-lisa.com). She earned a BA from Stanford University and an MBA in Marketing and Strategic Planning from Rice University. Maly Phommavong is based in Sacramento and has been in the interpreting field since 2015. In 1987, she arrived in the United States at age 13 as a child of refugees with a family of 12. She graduated with a Master's Degree in Criminology from CSU of Fresno in 2000, and worked as a deputy probation officer for Contra Costa County in 2002. She retired early from the Probation Department in 2015, and began working as a registered court interpreter for the California Judicial Court. Maly has been involved in grass-roots advocacy and volunteered in nonprofit organizations for decades. In 2015, She began her online presence through conducting live community discussions covering various issues affecting the community in the Lao language catering to non-English speaking members. Her videos have reached the Laotian audience worldwide. Kenya Prach is a survivor of the Khmer Rouge genocide who escaped to Thailand refugee camps before finding a second chance in the United States. Arriving with no knowledge of English and few opportunities, Kenya faced immense challenges, from being unable to attend high school or community college to being turned away from work. However, a kind gesture from an African American homeless man helped guide him toward education and a new life. A Cambodian-born martial artist, Kenya is known for his expertise in Kbach-Kun-Boran-Khmer (Bokator) and Muay Thai kickboxing. Despite enduring the horrors of the Khmer Rouge regime, he pursued martial arts in Thailand and later excelled in boxing in the United States. With a deep understanding of hardship and compassion, Kenya has dedicated his life to helping others, particularly in the fight against human trafficking and advocating for human rights. He believes that true wealth lies not in material possessions but in kindness, care and love. Through his work and his book Black Stone Hands, Kenya seeks to give a voice to the voiceless and inspire others to make a difference by uplifting those in need. Today, I interview George McCalman who has always found solace in his art, which has served as a safe haven for him to freely express his thoughts and feelings. Against all odds, he rose. An African American in a white neighborhood, he defied discrimination. With creativity as his weapon, he forged his path to self-discovery.McCalman is an artist and creative director based in San Francisco. He is known for his design studio, McCalman Co., which collaborates with a diverse range of cultural clients. George is also a columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle, where he documents Bay Area culture in his observed and first-person columns. His first book, "Illustrated Black History: Honoring The Iconic and Unseen," was published in 2022.George's journey has not been without its struggles, having experienced the challenges of finding his voice and identity as an artist. Growing up in Grenada and later moving to New York City, George had to navigate being a young boy in a new educational system and culture. However, his introspective nature, sensitivity, and keen observations of the world around him shaped his perspective and artistic talents. With the influence of his mother and grandmother, George discovered his love for art and storytelling at a young age. Despite initially doubting his identity as an artist, he eventually embraced it and found his voice through the creation of meaningful illustrations. George's artistic journey has been marked by a pivotal moment in Mexico City, where he realized that he could merge his roles as an artist and art director. Since then, he has dedicated himself to both disciplines, continuing to explore and celebrate the stories and histories of marginalized voices in America through his art.Join us as we delve into the world of George McCalman, witnessing the profound impact of his artistry, and discovering the resilience and determination that have propelled him on this extraordinary journey. Prepare to be captivated by his unique vision, as we explore how one individual's struggle can become an unyielding source of inspiration for us all.__________________Educated as a fine art painter with a focus on philosophy, McCalman defines himself as an artist and creative director. In practice, that means he illustrates, designs, and writes about the complex concepts he explores in his work.Other than being an artist, he is a creative director and Co-Principal of McCalman.Co. His background in the editorial world is a foundation of his storytelling, and his fine art practice has reframed his perspective on the importance of design. A culture columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle, McCalman's first book Illustrated Black History: Honoring the Iconic and the Unseen won the 2023 NAACP Award for Outstanding Literary Work as well as profound accolades by The New Yorker's Hilton Als, NPR, New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Fast Company and many others.__________________Find George here:https://www.mccalman.co/https://www.linkedin.com/in/george-mccalman-7b705a5/https://www.facebook.com/mccalman.cohttps://www.instagram.com/george.mccalman/ https://www.harpercollins.com/products/illustrated-black-history-george-mccalman?variant=39981632782370Support the showI'm Dr. Doreen Downing and I help people find their voice so they can speak without fear. The Mindful Marketer
A 2022 PLAYbook to Re-Engage Marketing Teams with Gary Ware

Two years into the pandemic, things still feel heavy. To cope, some professionals have turned to self-medication versus meditation (or other healthy habits). For many of us marketers, our creative candles have flamed out. Instead of focusing on discussing the theme, "The Great Resignation," what if we made 2022 "The Year of PLAY?" In Episode 51, we explore the connection of PLAY to performance with my colleague, Gary Ware. You may think I'm glossing over the severity of the pandemic. I'm not. I recognize and feel the collective global trauma on a daily basis. Instead, I'm inviting you to sit in the sandbox for a bit, and try on a new perspective.  Let me offer additional context from Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk. He is the author of the seminal book, The Body Keeps the Score.  Van Der Kolk believes that we have become overly dependent on pharmacological solutions to address trauma and mental illness in Western cultures. He calls it the "brain-disease model."  The model overlooks four fundamental truths: 1) Restoring relationships and community is central to restoring well-being  2) Language gives us the power to change ourselves and others and find a shared sense of meaning;  3) We can regulate our physiology…through basic activities such as breathing, moving, and touching; and  4) We can change social conditions to create environments where we can feel safe and where we can thrive." PLAY enables all four. That was enough for me to reach out to Gary Ware. In this livestream he outlined the strategies that he uses with marketing and leadership teams to re-ignite creativity, trust, and passion. He is the president of Breakthrough Play in San Diego, CA. Tune in this episode of The Mindful Marketer now—  Re-Engage Your Marketing Team: The 2022 Playbook. Watch the replay on LinkedIn.   Some key moments include:  ✔️ The PLAY model helps us create the right environment for learning and experimentation. Ware has taught this framework at AARP, Intel, Salesforce, SAP, and Kaiser Permanente. The PLAYbook consists of these 4 qualities: #1 - Psychological safety: Create an environment where people aren't afraid of being judged. Allow yourself to say something vulnerable. This gives other permission to do the same. #2 - Listening: Leaders must always listen to understand. #3 - Adapt - Adaptability is crucial to play.  #4 - Y- "The Why" - how can you accept reality and build on it? ✔️ The PLAY model isn't a trite acronym. It is a proven way to re-ignite job satisfaction, trust, and team confidence, especially in high stakes situations. Most people think of play as "it's childish" or "it's what kids do." In reality, Ware points to proven science of how play helps engage teams. Listen to the replay on Stitcher.  ✔️PLAY helps you spend much less time repeating your messages–and hoping they stick.  Dr. Karyn Purvis conducted a study on how we learn and retain information. She found that creating a new synapse neural pathway requires about 400-420 repetitions before it sticks. However, you can shortcut that to as few as 10 repetitions if you add play. When you are playing, you are engaging all of your senses. Listen to the replay on Stitcher.  You create a sandbox for your employees to play by creating those elements. Listen to the replay on Stitcher.  ✔️ Being a PLAY-full culture starts with one step: Find the moments or rituals in your organization that could use more playfulness.  Then, set your intentions using a template from Tiny Habits author,  BJ Fogg: "Before we start our brainstorming session, I will take 5 minutes and brainstorm ideas by myself, because I know it will pry my brain to be more creative." May your holidays be PLAY-full! See you next year. Copyright 2021, Lisa Nirell. My man, Gary Ware, stepped into the diner and brought a bunch of truth and his expertise in play to the booth. Before we dove into all that we compared notes on how we both eat our pancakes. Then we discussed our mutual love, improv comedy. I asked Gary how Gary got into improv (turns out it was completely on accident!) and what improv taught him about himself. We then chatted about getting diagnosed with ADHD as an adult and where the shame creeps in. Gary made a huge shift going from a full-time marketing job to selling everything to starting his own company as an entrepreneur, so naturally, we had to talk about it. Then we got into his bread and butter: Play. We discussed why it is hard for adults to play and what we need to do to incorporate more play in their lives. This one ended super strong, y'all!   About the Guest:  Gary Ware, the Founder of Breakthrough Play is a corporate facilitator, keynote speaker, certified coach, and self-proclaimed Creative Catalyst. Gary has over 14 years of experience in the corporate word holding various leadership positions. It's time to activate and utilize one of the most powerful tools we have to stay centered, sustained and focused on what matters - the Power Pause. This one, gets us focused the last  3 months / 4 moon cycles of the year.   There are many things you could do these last 3 months of the year, but what is really most important to you? What will bring you the best returns ? And what shifts in your habits, patterns, and structures are needed to support you in this last cycle?   Wise women know how to use the natural cycles of the earth and universe to support them to grow their work, wealth and relationships, to support their health, and to keep them focused on what matters. The September Equinox offers you insight to illuminate where the imbalances currently exist in your life & how to reset yourself and refocus your life force  - especially the ways in which you are over giving and under receiving, the habits that may have worked in the summer but won't support you now, and the ways in which making changes to your home, health and wealth can support you to end your year strong, sane and supported. In this Feminine Power Time : POWER PAUSE: Reflect, Rebalance and Reset Your Focus at Equinox ... and exhale! 3 Inquiries to Get Focused on What Matters Most the Last Part of this Year & Feel Good About What You've Already Done... Women's leadership and empowerment advisor and teacher, Christine Arylo, marries her MBA business background with 15+ years of wisdom and spiritual study in practical ways that can support you to elevate out of overhwelm, stay focused on what matters, shift sabotaging habits and take care of small things that make a big difference.  Tune into this Power Pause and: Learn the wisdom behind taking power pauses 4 times a year - and how this practice can yield big returns in your business, career, relationships and health/wealth/home Experience the feminine way of growing our work and impact vs tackling projects, driving like a torpedo, or pressuring ourselves to make things happen too fast Be led through a visualization and meditation to: Feel good about what you have already done this year.  Reveal the imbalances - work, relationships, health, wealth or home - that need attention. Consider what you need to bring the imbalances into harmony, so you have what you need  Gain clarity on how to best focus your attention the last part of this year - what will bring you the most meaningful and abundant harvest?  Power Pauses are a form of feminine leadership which teaches us to work in harmony with the natural cycles of how the material and mystical world both work. Part of her Feminine Wisdom School and Feminine Leadership Programs Arylo teaches how to use this ancient wisdom and way of working to apply to creating a life and work that creates an impact and is sustainable.  UPCOMING EVENTS, PROGRAMS, RETREATS Overwhelmed and Over It Book Unveiling: Embracing Our Power to Stay Centered and Sustained in a Chaotic World - RSVP for Free www.OverwhelmedandOverItBook.com  To receive invitations to Christine Arylo's fall Feminine Leadership Councils - called Elevate - and her fall Wisdom Quest for Women desiring to gain clarity, focus and courage to take the next steps to bring their sacred work into form, subscribe to her  Wisdom Letters at www.ChristineArylo.com  Women's Wisdom Quest Nov 13-15th  www.womenswisdomquest.com  Gather Your People - Transformational Program Design, Creative Catalyst and Wisdom Council for creating workshops, retreats, events, gatherings online or in person that create meaningful connection and lasting transformation www.GatherandGuideYourPeople.com

In this episode of #TheNewAbnormal, I interview Jens Laugesen, the Danish Fashion Design Practitioner / Advisor / Educator / Video Artist, who is known for a conceptual approach to creative design thinking and has most recently launched an innovative Global Graduate Design Showcase in partnership with the art & design portfolio platform ARTSTHREAD and i-D Magazine. Jens is very interested in how C19 can be seen as a creative catalyst and an opportunity for change. In this podcast we discuss how he was inspired by 9/11 to create a 'Ground Zero' design trilogy that resulted in the development of a personal design philosophy named 'Hybrid Reconstruction' born from what he describes as the post 9/11 ideological vacuum which he also saw as being the end of modernism. Today, Jens is also a video artist fascinated by the ‘glitch' and we therefore discuss this, alongside his background at the 'Navy SEALS of Fashion (Central St Martins) and the Institute de la Mode. He explains his views on contemporary culture, why the influence of Lars von Trier (and the Dogme 95 manifesto) was so influential, and today's students - the 'Pilots of Chaos' that are challenging existing thinking. Finally, we discuss the issue of meta-modernism and trust in a post-truth world; in the context of morals, values and responsibility. So...sit back and enjoy!

The world around you is filled with information about your life. Why did you choose your house? What does your phone number say? What does it mean when you see the same time on the clock over and over again? When you decode the numbers of your life, you create a greater connection with your life purpose – and you’ll find how to do just that with my guest today! I’m happy to introduce you to Lynn Scheurell, known by many as the “Catalyst” for accelerated transformation and better living. Since 1998, she has been teaching the leading edge of personal growth to thousands of business owners, is honored to be recognized as one of the 2012 Top 50 Who’s Who Among Women in Ecommerce and author of How To Make Friends With Your Money As An Entrepreneur (available on Kindle). Lynn Scheurell teaches her clients how to actualize their potential and achieve their dreams by ‘reading’ their environments to literally ‘program’ them for success by their own personal definition. Lynn Scheurell is an authority on accelerating entrepreneurial results through recognizing potential, activating personal transformation and applying strategy to growth systems and goals. Since 1998, as the Creative Catalyst, she has guided thousands of business owners to achieve their potential, help more people and change the world by starting within; the ‘new’ entrepreneurs know that personal commitment is the secret sauce that changes the world. It’s not about where the entrepreneur is and where they want to go any more; instead, the new paradigm is ‘here’s the place to be and how can I be in it faster and easier?’. Lynn believes that business is our highest calling made manifest through service and that a sacred exchange occurs in business. When you package your value into something people can ‘get’ and easily consume, your clients get to invest in themselves through that offer – and you are rewarded for your contribution through that client. It’s much more than money. Her Background Her mainstream employment history is summarized in a ‘thud’ report (as in, it makes an impressive noise when tossed on a hard surface!). Lynn’s entrepreneurial history includes diverse on- and off-line adventures, such as: a specialty retail boutique, Feng Shui practice, copywriting, professional intuitive services and a life coaching practice, among others. Two of her loves are the art of business and teaching others how to use it to grow themselves while creating a better world. Her formal education was received through the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, with a B.S. in Criminal Justice (with minors in Psychology and Sociology). Focusing on supporting visionary entrepreneurs change the world, she currently resides in Austin, Texas. She knows she is successful by the degree of positive change she facilitates in, for, through and with other people, including her amazing clients – and she joyfully celebrates success daily.
