Black people are not a monolith. Watching movies and listening to rap music does not make you an expert, just like some white people liking raisins in their potato salad does not mean every white person does either. This trial continues to point out infractions with the witnesses the State continues to bring and the lengths they are going to trying to convict Young Thug and YSL. Many have sung songs of change, from Charles Bradley to David Bowie to Tupac Shakur. The pace of social and economic changes—and the way they make us feel—is the subject of constant debate. Jonah is joined on today's episode by Tom Standage, a historian and the deputy editor of The Economist, to make the case that rapid change caused by innovation is nothing new in the annals of history. Jonah and Tom consider why man always jumps to doomsday when new technologies emerge, debate the merits of an organic diet, and discuss the storied history of brews and lager. Plus: the mythologization of the Medieval Age, a soliloquy to honor the historical lynchpin that is the potato, and the supernatural powers of a good cocktail. Send us a Text Message.Ever wondered how a seemingly innocent cookout could turn into an unforgettable comedy of errors? Picture this: someone sneaks raisins into the potato salad, sparking an uproar that leads to an emergency call and a cascade of culinary calamities. This week, we laugh through our collective kitchen blunders, like the time we made cookies that doubled as hockey pucks and discovered that mayonnaise in cupcakes is actually a thing. Together, we celebrate the unpredictable outcomes of our kitchen experiments and the often-overlooked importance of basic cooking skills. Now, brace yourself as we transition from culinary comedies to the cringe-worthy realm of dirty house horror stories. We've all had that one nightmare visit to a friend's house that left us questioning basic hygiene standards. From roach-infested kitchens to living rooms that look like a tornado hit, we recount our most vivid and unsettling experiences. We dive into the social implications of keeping a clean home, especially when hosting guests, and debate the pros and cons of hiring a maid service. Through these stories, we highlight the anxiety and frustration that come with clashing cleanliness standards and the crucial life lessons we hope to pass on to our children. Finally, we navigate the often unspoken topic of personal hygiene and basic life skills. Imagine the discomfort of being in a crowded sauna next to someone with a blatant disregard for personal space and cleanliness—it's an experience you won't forget. This episode underscores the vital role of good hygiene in social settings and everyday life, emphasizing how neglect can lead to social stigma. We also tackle the astonishing reality that some people struggle with simple tasks like cooking or making cereal. As we wrap up, we reflect on the absurdity of these challenges and thank our listeners for joining us on this hilarious and thought-provoking journey.Support the Show.

Who doesn't love potato salad? We're making a recipe that was mentioned on our Facebook group (COOKING WITH BRUCE & MARK) by a listener: potato, pasta, a combo of potato and macaroni salad. A great treat. We're Bruce Weinstein & Mark Scarbrough, authors of three dozen (and counting!) cookbooks (not counting the ones ghost-written for celebs--now there are some stories.) This is our podcast about our food and cooking passion . . . and mostly about potatoes this time around. Here are the segments for this episode of COOKING WITH BRUCE & MARK:[00:39] Our one-minute cooking tip: store potatoes in a cool, dark place at room temperature.[01:50] We're making potato salad with pasta, a U. S. Midwestern (and elsewhere!) classic. Here's the recipe:Start with 1 1/2 pounds (675 grams) VERY SMALL yellow potatoes, boiled in a Dutch oven with lots of water for 7 minutes. (Or larger potatoes, cut into 2-inch (1-centimeter) pieces.Add 1/2 pound (225 grams) dried small elbow macaroni. Cook until both are tender, about 5 more minutes.Drain in a colander set in the sink. Cool just a few minutes, then whisk together this dressing in a serving bowl: 3/4 cup (155 grams) mayonnaise, 1/4 cup (60 ml) apple cider vinegar, 2 tablespoons (30 grams) pickle relish, 2 teaspoons (10 grams) Dijon mustard, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon ground black pepper, 1/2 teaspoon onion powder, and 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder.Stir in the warm potatoes, pasta, 2 cups (360 grams) corn kernels and 4 thinly sliced celery stalks. If desired, top with 2 or 3 hard-cooked eggs, peeled and sliced. Just FYI, the salad tastes better when cold. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.[13:47] What's making us happy in food this week: cherimoya and rhubarb pie!
