Joel Engardio built his political profile by backing the successful recalls of members of San Francisco's Board of Education and its progressive district attorney. Now he may be facing a recall of his own. Engardio, who represents the city's Sunset District on the Board of Supervisors, is being targeted for backing a voter-approved ballot measure that permanently closed most of the Great Highway to car traffic. In its place: Sunset Dunes, a newly opened park that's drawn both praise and protest. The Surfer’s Journal presents Soundings with Jamie Brisick

Matt Warshaw grew up surfing in Los Angeles at a time when surf and skate culture were beginning to meet in Venice Beach and Santa Monica. After a stint as a pro surfer in the 1980s, Warshaw became the editor of Surfer magazine. In 1990, he left his editor's post at Surfer to attend UC Berkeley, where he got his BA in History in 1993. He remained in the Bay Area, parking himself in an apartment in the Sunset District and in countless Ocean Beach barrels. As if personally expanded by all those tubes, Warshaw's writing expanded into lengthy essays, profiles, and books—many books—among them Maverick's: The Story of Big-Wave Surfing, Above The Roar: 50 Surfer Interviews, Photo/Stoner, Surfriders: In Search of the Perfect Wave, Surf Movie Tonite! Surf Movie Poster Art, 1957-2005, and more. His Encyclopedia of Surfing, first released in 2003, is the most comprehensive tome of surf culture in existence, and he followed it up with 2010's The History of Surfing, a beast of a book that makes music of Warshaw's encyclopedic knowledge. His most recent venture is the EOS dot surf, which is an invaluable online resource for surf obsessives, and features the “Sunday Joint,” a reflective op-ed style email that Matt shoots out to subscribers every Sunday. In this episode of Soundings, Warshaw talks with Jamie Brisick about the golden days of Los Angeles, establishing a career as a historian, the value of exploring someone else's world, the importance of preserving history, the challenge of creating a database, his first Jeff Ho board, the Encyclopedia of Surfing, and the art of writing economically.

Tis the season for recall campaigns. A group in San Francisco's Sunset District is launching an effort to recall Supervisor Joel Engardio over his backing of a plan to close the Great Highway to vehicles. And on the Peninsula, Supervisors in San Mateo approved a measure calling for a special election next March. It would give them the power to recall the county's sheriff. All of this follows successful efforts to recall Oakland's Mayor and Alameda County's DA last month. KCBS Radio's news anchors Patti Reising and Bret Burkhart spoke with KCBS Insider Phil Matier about why these efforts are becoming so popular.

As outdoor cultivators fled the federal raids of the 90's, they took their genetic catalogs and cultivation techniques indoors. With its progressive environment and support of counterculture, San Francisco soon became a popular destination for cultivators fleeing the war on weed. San Francisco became the epicenter of the evolution of high grade indoor cannabis as cultivators refined their indoor techniques and continued breeding with the large variety of genetics available in the city. SF Canna was born and raised in San Francisco's Sunset District, which is a breeding ground for the highest quality cannabis in the world attracting connoisseurs, cultivators and hustlers. Hustlers-turned-cultivators, SF Canna has helped lead the evolution of indoor cannabis, entrenched in the game with pioneers like Cookies and Sherbinsky. At the peak of prohibition they've risked their freedom and livelihood to cultivate. Now, with over two decades of cultivation experience, SF Canna is consistently producing high quality cannabis with beautiful bud structure, vibrant colors, contemporary terpene profiles and maximum potency. All SF Canna flowers are cultivated in indoor facilities in San Francisco, where the weather and water provide optimal conditions for cultivating. They're constantly evolving our growing methods and building their genetic catalog. SF Canna's main mission is to provide an unrivaled cannabis experience through superior flavor, potency and appearance. Though their journey includes loss in the form of friends, finances, and freedom, they've demonstrated the character, fortitude and personal growth required to level up and raise the bar in the cannabis industry.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Why was San Francisco reformist District Attorney Chesa Boudin recalled? Who was really behind it? What does it mean for the future of the reformist DA movement? And what's next for Chesa? We ask Chesa himself. District Attorney Chesa Boudin was sworn in as San Francisco District Attorney in January 2020 to implement urgently needed reforms to our criminal justice system. Chesa personally understands the impact of incarceration; both of his parents were incarcerated throughout his childhood. Despite tremendous obstacles, Chesa graduated from top schools, became a lawyer, and dedicated his career to public service. Chesa's personal experience with parental incarceration inspired him to dedicate his career to making our country safer and more just by working to reform our criminal justice system. Chesa is a Rhodes Scholar who graduated from Yale Law School. After obtaining his law degree, he worked as a law clerk to the Honorable M. Margaret McKeown of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and later for the Honorable Charles Breyer of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. As an attorney, Chesa has litigated more than 300 felony cases including murder, attempted murders, shootings, stabbings, home break-ins, drug sales, kidnappings, and auto burglaries. Under Chesa's leadership, the San Francisco District Attorney's Office has increased its prosecution rates; expanded victim services; and added new prosecution units, all while making investments to reduce recidivism and redirect towards education and employment. Chesa believes we must hold accountable those who violate the law; and he also recognizes that we are all safer when we can and address the root causes of crime to prevent crime before it happens. District Attorney Boudin's innovative work has focused on three main areas: 1) centering and increasing support for crime victims and survivors; 2) ensuring equal justice under the law; 3) developing new programs and reforms to ensure a more fair and just criminal legal system. Chesa, his wife, and their newborn son live in the Sunset District of San Francisco. When my parents generously offered to give me their 20-year- old Acura sedan, my first thought was: Me, a car-free, transit-riding, e-bike loving San Francisco resident, take possession of a fossil-fuel-burning, climate-change machine? But in an impulsive act of quarantine indulgence, I accepted their offer. I named the white car Casper, after the friendly ghost. And while I still prefer to travel by Muni, I must admit owning a car has its perks. I take Casper to visit my grandparents in Vacaville every month. My four-wheeled phantom was there to rush my sick dog to the emergency vet one night at 3 A.M. The car even served as a satellite office when my neighbors ran a jackhammer all day while I was trying to work from home. But the downsides soon became clear. Casper costs thousands of dollars to own and operate – so much more than my monthly transit pass. Meanwhile, sitting in traffic is stressful. I'd much rather be gliding down the street on my e-bike, groceries in tow, instead of cooped up in a metal box, inching my way home. And then, of course, there's the guilt I feel knowing that driving is our city's number one source of greenhouse gas emissions. I've realized that owning a car hardly symbolizes freedom. In fact, it's the opposite. This made me wonder. What would it take to make car-free, or even car-light, lifestyles the norm? It would take frequent, reliable transit service that's accessible for all. It would require making sure residents have protected bike lanes and safe streets to walk, bike, and scoot in. It would mean guaranteeing that a shared car is available when people do need to drive. And maybe it even means nudging people out of cars by making driving just a little less convenient. For now, Casper spends most of her time parked on the streets of the Sunset District. But when her time comes, I hope to shed this car for good, knowing that options will be there to match Casper's convenience – without the fossil fuels. Andrew St. James's birth mom was a tour caterer for the Rolling Stones. In this episode, the musician traces his lineage back to his being adopted by a young San Francisco couple. Carol moved to San Francisco in 1971. She worked at the Gap and what used to be Live 105 and KMEL. Nathan was born in Brooklyn to Holocaust survivor parents. After his New York marriage fizzled, he hopped on a motorcycle and rode to San Francisco in 1978. Nathan and some friends opened the original Captain Video stores. The two met when Nathan went to buy radio advertising from Carol. The couple lived in Glen Park when they adopted Andrew, then they all moved to the Sunset District, where Andrew was raised. Andrew shares early memories from both neighborhoods. He sang in the San Francisco Boys Choir for a number of years before getting jaded at a young age. He decided to branch out more on his own, and so he bought an organ. He soon began playing rock music with friends roughly his age—12. Andrew got into Urban High School, which he shares the background and philosophy of for us. Andrew says that by the time he entered high school, in the late-2000s, that philosophy had more or less gone by the wayside. Check back Thursday for Part 2 and the continuation of Andrew's life story. Rick Prelinger, a guerrilla archivist who collects the uncollected and makes it accessible, presents the fifth of his annual Lost Landscapes of San Francisco screenings. You'll see an eclectic montage of rediscovered and rarely-seen film clips showing life, landscapes, labor and leisure in a vanished San Francisco as captured by amateurs, newsreel cameramen and industrial filmmakers. New material this year will include test flights over the unbuilt dunes of the Sunset District, Prohibition-era libertines partying in Golden Gate Park and drinking in their cars, lost travelogues and scenes from San Francisco countercultures. Suzanne Ramsey, aka Kitten on the Keys, will be back to open for Rick again this year; she will regale us with vintage tunes and a vivacious style that has entertained crowds from here in San Francisco to the Cannes Film Festival.
