“The Black Experience in Design: Identity, Expression & Reflection” is one of the most important contributions to the corpus of design history, and I'm so glad this week to have the book's managing editor, Anne H. Berry, on Revision Path to talk about it. I caught up with her while she's on sabbatical from Cleveland State University, where she's an associate professor in the department of art and design. Our conversation began with a discussion about the state of education and teaching over the past few years, and what it means for students and the general culture. Of course, we also talked about the book, and Anne shared how the super team of editors and contributors came together through the power of a shared vision. Anne also spoke on her 2021 exhibit, Ongoing Matter: Democracy, Design and the Mueller Report.Thank you to Anne for helping push the conversations around Black design forward!LinksAnne H. I first learned about Tasheka Arceneaux-Sutton way back in 2015 when I interviewed Silas Munro. Since then, Tasheka has gone on to become one of the leading voices behind discovering Black people omitted from the graphic design history canon. Even design legend Dr. Cheryl D. Miller has sung her praises, so I knew I had to sit down with Tasheka and learn more about her remarkable journey.Tasheka spoke to me about her experience as an educator and researcher, including an examination of her teaching philosophy. She also talked about growing up in New Orleans, her shift into design, working for the Navy Reservists, and even starting her own studio, Blacvoice Design. Lastly, she discussed her upcoming book Black Design in America, and shared how the different aspects of her work keep her motivated and inspired. If there's any lesson you learn from Tasheka, it should be this one: you have control over your own path as a designer, so work hard and you can make your dreams come true!LinksBlacvoice DesignTasheka Arceneaux-Sutton on FacebookTasheka Arceneaux-Sutton on InstagramTasheka Arceneaux-Sutton on LinkedInFor a full transcript of this interview, visit revisionpath.com.==========Take our 2023 Audience Survey! It's that time of year again! Now more than ever, teachers have a lot on their plate. In addition to the regular responsibilities of lesson planning and grading, additional pressures to foster classroom community, focus on student wellness, increase standardized test scores, and keep up with the competitive Instagram teacher community can leave anyone feeling stressed and pulled in many different directions. But Melissa wants to help teachers feel more in control, helping them use their time more effectively by offering high quality, research-based curriculum products and actionable advice so teachers no longer just get by but truly thrive in the classroom each and every day. Melissa is the curriculum designer behind Teacher Thrive. Melissa explains how her foray into curriculum design happened organically, long before she had even heard about TeachersPayTeachers and while she was very much in the trenches of the classroom herself. What was a gig to craft curriculum for her district ended up aligning with her stage of life all the better, and Melissa has never looked back. Now, Melissa's blog and shop allow her to reach even more teachers, giving them the tools they need inside the classroom and the advice they need to hear. While Melissa has crafted curricula for many different areas, Melissa deep dives into strategies for reading fluency, providing tips that can be immediately implemented no matter what grade level or subject you teach. In this episode, you'll hear, -How your own district may be just the place to start when designing curriculum -Why teacher wellness (and particularly your sleep) play a big role in your success in and out of the classroom -What exactly reading fluency means—and the strategies you can use in your classroom to promote reading fluency Links mentioned: Melissa's website, blog, and ready-made downloads https://teacherthrive.com/ Melissa's Choral Reading freebie download https://teacherthrive.com/2019/10/choral-reading-and-reading-fluency.html

We're closing out 2017 by talking with the one and only John Jennings. As a storyteller, editor and artist, John's body of work spans several media: comics, graphic novels, books, and countless panels and talks. He's even the co-founder and organizer of two comics conventions! Currently he's a professor of media and cultural studies at UC Riverside, and he is exploring the connections between design, identity politics and popular media. John starts off by giving us a primer on afrofuturism and talks about some of his current projects, such as illustrating Kindred: A Graphic Novel Adaptation and finishing the art book Black Comix Returns. From there, we go into topics around art and design as indicators of culture, speculative design, and more. John is really helping advance the conversation around comics and culture, and I couldn't think of a better way to wrap up the year. 2018, here we come! I’m taking a different approach in the form of a round table discussion between an industry professional and interactive design educators. The reason for the departure in this episode stems from the opportunity of having two interactive design educators presenting at the annual SECAC, formerly the Southeastern College Art Conference, in the same room with an actual practicing designer at a real life agency in Columbus, Ohio. Coincidentally, at the same time, the AIGA Design Educators Community just released a draft version of their Designer of 2025 and I think it’s great to get everybody in the room at the same time and talk about the report If you’ve been listening to the podcast, it’s basically been about what I think we should be teaching and me asking professionals or educators to get their feedback. I think this format gives me a great chance to get somebody else talking about what they think should be taught and then getting interactive design educators and professionals together to say, “Yeah, these are the things we really need to target immediately!”, or “These things aren’t really relevant to us on a day to day basis.”, and follow up from the education perspective, on how do we incorporate that?

Diversity in design for Black people is an important issue, but a lot of its focus tends to go towards employment rather than education. Design researcher Omari Souza has approached the topic from a different angle, and his thesis reveals some startling insights. Omari shared how he first got into design and how his education at Cleveland Institute of Art and Kent State University inspired his push into design research. Omari is also a new full-time professor at La Roche College in Pittsburgh, so we talked about the importance of representation in design education and even about the design community's silence around political issues concerning Black Americans.
