You've heard of Imboden's Brigade. But what do you know about it and its role in the Gettysburg Campaign. Steve French fills us in. Steve is a former middle school history teacher and graduate of Shepherd College. His works include Imboden's Brigade in the Gettysburg Campaign; Rebel Chronicles: Raiders, Scouts, and Train Robbers of the Upper-Potomac; and Four Years Along the Tilhance: The Private Diary of Elisha Manor.

Following two anti-Meade witnesses was a third, General Albion P. Howe. After Howe's testimony Senators Benjamin Wade and Zachariah Chandler felt they had enough evidence to present to President Abraham Lincoln in order to have Meade fired. Instead, at Lincoln's behest, Meade himself would appear before the committee to defend his record during the Gettysburg Campaign.

Excuse Me History is back with a new addendum to "The Gettysburg Campaign." In this mini-series "Meade on Trial", we'll discuss the 1864 hearings held by the United States Congressional Joint Committee on the Conduct of the War. The Joint Committee, led by the Radical Republican Senators Benjamin Wade and Zachariah Chandler, sought answers as to why the Army of the Potomac failed to destroy the Army of Northern Virginia at Gettysburg or along the banks of the Potomac River. The Committee convened in the late winter and early spring of 1864 to investigate the actions of the army during the Gettysburg campaign and General George Meade in particular. Their goal was to remove Meade from command and replace him with a more radically minded general, ideally Joseph Hooker. In this first episode we'll discuss the formation and purpose of the Joint Committee, the Radical Republican plan for the war, and the first two witness testimonies: Daniel Sickles and Abner Doubleday.

CWRT Feb 2024 For more info : WWW.ChicagoCWRT.Org  Often small individual encounters in history, experienced by common people like us, caught in the maelstrom of events, hold larger truths. Sometimes these experiences have meaning—not only for those who experience them, but for us in today's world. This program follows twelve members of the 17th Connecticut Regiment through the three-day Battle of Gettysburg and beyond in July 1863. It focuses on the stories of the wounded, the caregivers, and the honored dead. These men fought for their lives, lost friends, and suffered themselves at Gettysburg. Their sacrifices are still with us today and from them we inherited great social and medical advances. Because of their sacrifices we began to understand the hidden costs of war, and that not all wounds are visible. The stories of these twelve citizen soldiers highlight the meaning that their lives and experiences have for our generation today: socially, medically, and psychologically. These are their stories.  Carolyn Ivanoff is a retired high school administrator and independent historian. She writes and speaks frequently on American history at local, state, and national venues. In 2003, Carolyn was named Civil War Trust's Teacher of the Year. We Fought at 2  Gettysburg is her first book. It follows the 17th Connecticut Regiment through the Gettysburg Campaign and beyond in June and July of 1863.

The Union Army of the Potomac finally catches up to the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia at Williamsport, Maryland. With the rebels dug in in a series of defensive earthworks, Genera George Meade hesitates to attack and calls a Council of War of his top generals. After a brief respite from the heavy summer rains, General Robert E. Lee seizes the opportunity to begin the evacuation of his army across the Potomac River. Union cavalry under Generals Judson Kilpatrick and John Buford launch an attack on the Confederate rear guard at the Battle of Falling Waters. Mingus Sr. and Eric J. Wittenberg, the authors of more than forty Civil War books, have once again teamed up to present a history of the opening moves of the Gettysburg Campaign in the two-volume study “If We Are Striking for Pennsylvania”: The Army of Northern Virginia and the Army of the Potomac March to Gettysburg. This compelling study is one of the first to integrate the military, media, political, social, economic, and civilian perspectives with rank-and-file accounts from the soldiers of both armies as they inexorably march toward their destiny at Gettysburg. This first installment covers June 3–21, 1863, while the second, spanning June 22–30, completes the march and carries the armies to the eve of the fighting. Gen. Robert E. Lee began moving part of his Army of Northern Virginia from the Old Dominion toward Pennsylvania on June 3, 1863. Lee believed his army needed to win a major victory on Northern soil if the South was to have a chance at winning the war. Transferring the fighting out of war-torn Virginia would allow the state time to heal while he supplied his army from untapped farms and stores in Maryland and the Keystone State. Lee had also convinced Pres. Jefferson Davis that his offensive would interfere with the Union effort to take Vicksburg in Mississippi. The bold movement would trigger extensive cavalry fighting and a major battle at Winchester before culminating in the bloody three-day battle at Gettysburg. As the Virginia army moved north, the Army of the Potomac responded by protecting the vital roads to Washington, D.C., in case Lee turned to threaten the capital. Opposing presidents Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis, meanwhile, kept a close watch on the latest and often conflicting military intelligence gathered in the field. Throughout northern Virginia, central Maryland, and south-central Pennsylvania, meanwhile, civilians and soldiers alike struggled with the reality of a mobile campaign and the massive logistical needs of the armies. Thousands left written accounts of the passage of the long martial columns. Mingus and Wittenberg mined hundreds of primary accounts, newspapers, and other sources to produce this powerful and gripping account. On July 6, 2023, author Hampton Newsome delivered a lecture about the little-known United States offensive against Richmond during the Gettysburg Campaign in the summer of 1863. Sometimes referred to as the Blackberry Raid, the Union offensive was led by John Dix and provided a significant opportunity as 20,000 U.S. troops advanced on the Confederate capital and sought to cut the railroads supplying Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia in Pennsylvania. To some, Dix's campaign presented a tremendous chance for federal forces to strike hard at Richmond while Lee was in Pennsylvania. To others, it was an unnecessary lark that tied up units deployed more effectively in protecting Washington and confronting Lee's men on Northern soil. Hampton Newsome is the author of several award-winning books on the Civil War, including Richmond Must Fall: The Richmond-Petersburg Campaign, October 1864 (2012); The Fight for the Old North State: The Civil War in North Carolina, January–May 1864 (2019); and his most recent title, Gettysburg's Southern Front: Opportunity and Failure at Richmond (2022). Gettysburg's Southern Front received the Edwin C. Bearss Book Award for Outstanding Scholarship in Civil War History from the Chicago Civil War Roundtable and was named one of top 10 books of 2022 by Civil War Books and Authors. Union cavalry under Generals Judson Kilpatrick and John Buford attack Jeb Stuart's cavalry at Hagerstown and John Imboden's improvised defense at Williamsport. General George G. Meade finally decides to mount a real pursuit of the Confederates.

Lee planned to march up the Shenandoah Valley to cross into Maryland, where the army's movements would be screened by both the Blue Ridge Mountains and Gen. J.E.B. Stuart's cavalry. Lieut. Gen. Richard S. Back in September of 2022, Matt, Six Questions Lentz, LBGs Chris Army and Tracy Baer and friends went down to Culpeper, Virginia to take a tour of Brandy Station battlefields with Clark "Bud" Hall and then record a show on Fleetwood Hill. Bud has led a remakable effort to preserve hundreds of acres of battlefield over the decades and it's truly an amazing place to visit. The grounds saw far more activity that just that famous cavalry battle on June 9, 1863.  From the American Battlefield Trust: "Fought in the second week of June 1863, Brandy Station was the largest cavalry battle ever fought in North America. With momentum firmly in hand after his stunning victory at Chancellorsville, General Robert E. Lee decided to launch a second Northern invasion. On June 3, the Army of Northern Virginia began the movement away from Fredericksburg. The first leg of the march took the Confederates to Culpeper Court House. From there, Maj. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart's cavalry division was to screen the infantry as the march continued to the Shenandoah Valley. Stuart's concentration, however, was detected by Union cavalry led by Alfred Pleasonton. Under the assumption that Stuart planned a raid around his right flank toward Washington, Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker, the commander of the Army of the Potomac, directed Pleasonton to cross the Rappahannock River and destroy the Confederate cavalry. Early on the morning of June 9, Pleasonton sent columns over the Rappahannock at Beverly Ford and Kelly's Ford. Following the crossing at Beverly Ford, the Union troopers truck Stuart's camp in the vicinity of a rail station on the Orange & Alexandria Railroad, Brandy Station. The Confederates quickly rallied, and the Federals ran into stiff resistance at St. James Church and the Richard Cunningham farm. After moving over Kelly's Ford, the Union cavalry split up. One division headed for Brandy Station while the other made their way to Stevensburg. The arrival of blue troopers at Brandy Station threatened the rear of Stuart's position. Stuart countered by deftly shifting his brigades, and the two sides clashed in mounted combat on a long, low ridge that rose from the station called Fleetwood Hill. Correspondingly, Pleasonton's force at Stevensburg were stymied by Confederate horsemen. Unable to break through Stuart's position, Pleasonton abandoned the field after fourteen hours of fighting." In the days after the battle Confederate wagon trains roll down the roads from Gettysburg to Williamsport, but are unable to cross because of high water levels. Union cavalry ambush them at Cunningham's Crossroads and Greencastle. The main body of the Army of Northern Virginia begins it retreat under the cover of darkness and rain. Meanwhile, General George Meade plans the the pursuit and sends the Union 6th Corps in pursuit of Lee's rear guard. Both cavalry forces are on the move and clash at various points. Following the repulse of Pickett's Charge, General Robert E. Lee and his top lieutenants plan for the evacuation of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. General George Meade's Union Army of the Potomac rests and regroups in anticipation of the upcoming race back to southern territory with the rebels. Meanwhile, a Union cavalry detachment destroys the Confederate pontoon bridge at Falling Waters and Generals Judson Kilpatrick and George Custer's troopers ambush the rebel wagon train at the Battle of Monterey Pass. After at least an hour of constant artillery fire the Pickett-Pettigrew-Trimble Assault, better known as Pickett's Charge, finally began. The Confederate infantry marched toward Union lines on Cemetery Ridge, taking fire from artillery and infantry skirmishers. When the rebels crossed the Emmitsburg Road Union infantry of General Winfield Scott Hancock's Second Corps opened fire. A small group of Virginians led by General Lewis Armistead managed to climb over the stone fence in a gap in the Union line near the Copse of Trees. Despite the breakthrough, Federal troops rally and repulse the rebels, ending the Battle of Gettysburg in a Union victory. https://www.facebook.com/EMHistory?mibextid=LQQJ4d

After General Robert E. Lee's original plan for July 3rd was spoiled he and General James Longstreet prepare an infantry assault, involving some 12,500 soldiers, on the center of the Union line. A pre-attack cannonade was led in part by Col. Edward Porter Alexander. Around 160 Confederate guns bombarded the Union Second Corps along Cemetery Ridge for around an hour in the hopes of demoralizing and driving them off. Meanwhile, General George Meade correctly anticipated the Confederate assault and made preparations to defend against it. National Park Service Ranger Troy Harman joins the Strategy Bridge Podcast to talk about the role of the location of water, roads, and rail in the decision making during the Gettysburg campaign. LBGs Fran Feyock and Doug Douds, with Historian Jared Peatman, join us to discuss the genius behind Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. This isn't a discussion of the dedication event, but, rather, an analysis of the speech itself and, I dare say, I think you'll like this one.  The Gettysburg Address: Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate—we can not consecrate—we can not hallow—this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced.
