On June 14, 1863, US Major General John Adams Dix received the following directive from General-in-Chief Henry Halleck: "All your available force should be concentrated to threaten Richmond, by seizing and destroying their railroad bridges over the South and North Anna Rivers, and do them all the damage possible." With General Robert E. Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia marching toward Gettysburg and only a limited Confederate force guarding Richmond, Halleck sensed a rare opportunity for the Union cause. In response, Dix, who had lived a life of considerable public service but possessed limited military experience, gathered his men and began a slow advance. During the ensuing operation, 20,000 US troops would threaten the Confederate capital and seek to cut the railroads supplying Lee's army in Pennsylvania. To some, Dix's campaign presented a tremendous chance for US forces to strike hard at Richmond while Lee was off in Pennsylvania. To others, it was an unnecessary lark that tied up units deployed more effectively in protecting Washington and confronting Lee's men on Northern soil. In this study, Newsome offers an in-depth look into this little-known Federal advance against Richmond during the Gettysburg Campaign. The first full-length examination of Dix's venture, this volume not only delves into the military operations at the time, but also addresses concurrent issues related to diplomacy, US war policy, and the involvement of enslaved people in the Federal offensive. Gettysburg's Southern Front also points to the often-unrecognized value in examining events of the US Civil War beyond the larger famous battles and campaigns. At the time, political and military leaders on both sides carefully weighed Dix's efforts at Richmond and understood that the offensive had the potential to generate dramatic results. In fact, this piece of the Gettysburg Campaign may rank as one of the Union war effort's more compelling lost opportunities in the East, one that could have changed the course of the conflict.
American Rare Earths CEO Mark Wall joined Steve Darling from Proactive to announce the start of the company's 2026 exploration drilling program at the Cowboy State Mine within the Halleck Creek Rare Earths Project in Wyoming. The new campaign represents the beginning of feasibility-level drilling designed to support advancement toward a Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) at what is believed to be the largest known rare earth deposit in the United States based on total rare earth oxide content. Wall explained that the program is intended to establish the geological, geotechnical, and engineering foundation necessary for future mine planning and reserve development. The company plans to complete approximately 3,050 metres of HQ core drilling across 19 drill holes focused on the Red Mountain area of the project. Drilling officially commenced on May 13, 2026, and is expected to continue through mid-July. According to the company, the program is anticipated to generate approximately 1,045 core samples for laboratory assay testing. Remaining core material will be preserved for additional technical work, including geotechnical, hydrological, environmental, and metallurgical studies that will contribute to the DFS process and future mine design considerations. American Rare Earths also noted that all drill holes will undergo detailed geophysical logging, including optical and acoustic televiewer surveys where appropriate. These studies are expected to support advanced geomechanical analysis and provide important data related to rock structure, stability, and engineering requirements for potential future mining operations. Nine of the planned core holes are positioned on the top of Red Mountain and are specifically targeting higher-grade mineralized zones expected to contribute to the first five years of planned production, as outlined in the Cowboy State Mine pre-feasibility study pit shells. The company said these holes are designed to support future ore reserve estimation and improve confidence in the early-stage mine plan as work progresses toward the DFS. An additional ten core holes will be drilled around the base of Red Mountain, where previous channel sampling and recent geological mapping identified areas of potentially higher-grade mineralization. Management believes these holes could help further define and expand mineralized zones while improving the company's understanding of the broader deposit geometry and continuity. #proactiveinvestors #americanrareearthslimited #asx #arr #otcqx #arrnf #adr #amrry #wyomingrareinc #HalleckCreek #RareEarths #RareEarths #CriticalMinerals #MiningNews #HalleckCreek #WyomingMining #RareEarthElements #EnergyTransition #ExplorationDrilling #USMining
American Rare Earths CEO Mark Wall joined Steve Darling from Proactive to announce rapid progress on the company's pilot plant program aimed at producing pre-production rare earth concentrate from Halleck Creek ore. As part of this advancement, the company has engaged Jaye T. Pickarts, P.E. to lead the pilot plant process, bringing extensive U.S.-based rare earth and project development expertise to this critical stage. Wall explained that Pickarts is a metallurgical engineer and Registered Professional Engineer with more than four decades of experience in mine development, mineral processing, and environmental compliance. His background includes leadership roles in rare earth demonstration plants and Wyoming-based permitting and operations. In previous positions, including a senior role at engineering firm Knight Piésold, Pickarts oversaw the design, construction, and commissioning of rare earth pilot and demonstration facilities. He has also contributed to multiple technical studies, advancing projects from early scoping through to feasibility. His combined expertise in flowsheet development and plant execution will be instrumental in integrating and de-risking the Halleck Creek pilot circuit. To support the program, American Rare Earths has ordered three key pieces of front-end processing equipment. The company has already received two Induced Roll Magnetic Separators (IRMS) manufactured by Mineral Technologies, headquartered in Starke, Florida. In addition, it has ordered a “GradePro” Reflux Classifier from FLSmidth in Salt Lake City, Utah, which is currently being fabricated on an expedited schedule. The remainder of the circuit will utilize standard, well-established processing equipment, allowing the team to focus on efficiently integrating and optimizing these critical components. The company has also announced it has brought on t Tetra Tech, a U.S. based major consulting and engineering services company, to complete an Oxides to Metals study for the Company's heavy rare earths stream. The study will evaluate options to convert separated heavy rare earth oxides from the American Rare Earths Halleck Creek Project in Wyoming all the way to metal, a critical midstream step immediately preceding the manufacture of permanent magnets relied upon by defense and advanced technology sectors. #proactiveinvestors #americanrareearthslimited #asx #arr #otcqx #arrnf #adr #amrry #wyomingrareinc #RareEarths #HalleckCreek #PilotPlant #MineralProcessing #CriticalMinerals #Metallurgy #MiningInnovation #TREO #ResourceDevelopment #WyomingMining #ProcessEngineering #CleanTech #SupplyChain #ProjectDevelopment
American Rare Earths CEO Mark Wall joined Steve Darling from Proactive's OTC studio in New York City to discuss the strategic importance and long-term potential of the Halleck Creek rare earths project in Wyoming, positioning it as a cornerstone for domestic U.S. supply. Wall described the project's scale as extraordinary, noting, “It's 2.5 billion tons of ore, with a B, which is a lot.” He compared Halleck Creek to large, long-life copper porphyry systems, highlighting its low strip ratio of 0.16 and near-surface mineralisation, making it “very, very simple to mine.” He emphasised that the asset has the potential to act as “the strategic anchor to United States rare earths supply domestically for many, many, many years.” Current estimates suggest around 100 years of supply, though Wall noted this is a conservative figure. At a lower cut-off grade of 1,000 ppm, the resource could extend beyond 400 years, with the ore body remaining open both at depth and laterally. Looking ahead to 2026, the company plans several key milestones, including completion of the pre-feasibility study (PFS), commencement of the feasibility study, submission of the state permit, and ongoing engagement in Washington, DC to reinforce the project's strategic significance. Halleck Creek hosts both heavy and light rare earths, including terbium, dysprosium, and samarium, elements critical for defence and advanced technology applications. Combined with Wyoming's supportive infrastructure, permitting framework, and collaboration with the University of Wyoming on potential industrial uses for engineered sand by-products, Wall positioned Halleck Creek as a major domestic rare earth opportunity that could strengthen U.S. supply chain independence. #proactiveinvestors #americanrareearths #asx #arr #otcqx #arrnf #HalleckCreek #RareEarths #USMining #WyomingMining #CriticalMinerals #HeavyRareEarths #LightRareEarths #EnergyTransition #DefenseMetals #MiningInvestment #StrategicMetals #PFS #FeasibilityStudy #USSupplyChain
In this episode of Transforming 45, Lisa Boate sits down with Hussein Halleck, a Syrian-born Canadian whose life journey spans cultures, identities, and profound inner work. Together they explore authenticity, modern parenting, mental health in the age of acceleration, and what it truly means to define “enough” on your own terms. This is a conversation about navigating uncertainty, mastering the inner game of life, and learning to live with compassion in a world that never slows down. Takeaways: Authenticity and identity across cultures Parenting in an era of rapid social and technological change Mental health, nervous system overload, and modern life Redefining success and choosing “enough” Life mastery as an internal practice, not an external achievement Embracing uncertainty and the “dark arts” of self-discovery “Enough” is a personal choice, not a societal benchmark. Parenting is a co-evolution, not a one-way teaching role. Today's children face emotional and systemic pressures unlike any previous generation. Technology accelerates life — and challenges our nervous systems and relationships. Understanding personal, community, and systemic domains helps us orient in complexity. True mastery is about inner alignment, not outer control. Compassion for self is essential in uncertain seasons of life. Embracing mystery can be a powerful path to growth and resilience. It's the SECOND Smack-Dab Center of the Holidays episode for 2025! This episode features an interview with Shila Ulrich, the CEO of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. We talk about the best food and drink all year, but I wanted to helping the people who are focused on simply finding enough to live on. We can help them, and Shila has some advice on how, and why, and who they are. Like me, after you hear this interview, you'll be ready to help. Don't deny the impulse! Then you get what you wanted. Since the first episode, listeners have asked me: when is Cathy coming back on the show? Well, we've got her, talking about one of her favorite things: Christmas cookies. That's right, two cookie interviews in a row! We're throwing our family Christmas caroling party this weekend, a tradition that's over 20 years old, and I wanted to tell you that story, a story that has its beginnings back in the mid-1970s, at a fantastic party I got to invited to in the Philly suburbs, and ends up with a bottle of bubbly and Blade Runner. Remember: there's a growing list of central Pennsylvania small shopping suggestions for you at the new website! That's SeenThroughAGlass.com, the same place where you can get signed copies of my books in time for Christmas gifting! What I'm Drinking Today got a little carried away, as it does this time of year. There are four drinks that I'll tell you about; two big Belgians, a simple but delicious bourbon cocktail, and a real surprise. The Smack Dab In The Centre segment tells you...well, it tells you where to shop for my favorite Christmas presents: books! I'll tell you about my last book event for the year, right here in the smack-dab center on Friday the 19th, with barleywine. Next episode is coming on Boxing Day, the day after Christmas! We don't know what it's going to be, but Dave and I have some ideas. Hope you've got the day off and you can come with us. See you in two weeks...and a day! Merry Christmas! Until then? It's the FIRST Smack-Dab Center of the Holidays episode, a town profile of Mifflinburg! The holiday episode is about...Mifflinburg? Yes! For a couple reasons, but the biggest one is the Mifflinburg Christkindl Market, the annual recreation of an authentic German Christmas market on Market Street. Crafts and goods (many handmade, many unique), indulgent foods and drinks for the young and adult, music, entertainment, and Hilby the Skinny German Juggle Boy (click on that link for a New York Times profile of Hilby) all in one place, a wonderful festival. We've also got a wonderful interview with Nikki Keister-Hornig, the proprietor of Gable House Bakery, where we wander surprisingly far afield (Hong Kong, Italy) but then bring things back home with Nikki's insights on cookies: it's hard to bake just three, so baking is so often a communal activity. She'll also tell you her secrets on how to bake great pastries with supermarket ingredients, and the best thing she's ever made at Gable House (BOURBON was involved!). I'll also tell you about a trip I took to Asheville, NC for the release of Sierra Nevada Celly Drippins, a brewery-only beer made from the "drippins" from the huge hop sacks they use to dry-hop Sierra Nevada Celebration. There's a short interview with Sierra Nevada's Brian Grossman (chief brewer at North Carolina, and son of founder Ken Grossman) about how Celly Drippins is made, and a report on my first visit to Buc-ee's, the famously gargantuan Texas-based "convenience store" chain. Hey, remember the scalloped oysters I told you about last episode? I made them for Thanksgiving, and had the leftovers for breakfast on Friday! Remember: today is Small Business Saturday, and there's a growing list of central Pennsylvania small shopping suggestions for you at the new website! That's SeenThroughAGlass.com! Once again, huge thanks to my daughter Nora Bryson for building the site, with a merch store, a blog, Corgi pix, and more to come. What I'm Drinking Today is hyperlocal. Boal City Brewing Cream Ale is a delightfully delicate but flavorful way to savor a beer that won't fill you up; perfect with your big holiday meals. The Smack Dab In The Centre segment is getting into the cold: where to find the best cup of hot chocolate in State College! I have notes about three American Whiskey Master Class signing events in central PA in December, including one next Sunday that's a fundraiser for one of our favorite local non-profits, the Penns Valley Conservation Association! You can get tickets for that one right here. Remember, a signed copy is a great holiday gift for your whiskey-loving friends that you can now buy at the new website! Next episode is another holiday episode, back on the regular Thursday schedule. Get ready! See you in two weeks...er, ten days! Until then? TELL YOUR FRIENDS ABOUT THE PODCAST! Henry Halleck was one of the Union's top generals during the Civil War — a brilliant organizer and strategist known as “Old Brains.” Though often criticized for his caution, Halleck played a key role behind the scenes, shaping the Union Army's structure and helping guide its path to victory.
Despite being the son of a pharmacist turned wine professional, I did not know the purpose of an Entheogen. Ross Halleck set me straight,so much so, that after defining an entheogen, the value of the consumption of wine became clearer. Ross Halleck doesn't just make wine—he might just ask you to close your eyes and seek the divine within a single glass. In this episode of Wine Talks, you'll be swept past the typical vineyard tales and deep into the spiritual and mystical roots of wine itself. You'll learn how Ross stumbled into the wine trade not through family legacy or grand ambition, but with the curiosity of a seeker and a penchant for unearthing life's mysteries. Paul and Ross unravel why, for some, wine is more than a social lubricant or status symbol; it's an “entheogen”—a conduit to something sacred. Discover how the trappings of wine culture, from magazine scores to over-intellectualization, can miss the magic entirely, and why Ross is on a mission to return wine to its ancient role: bringing people together, not driving them apart. You'll step inside his West Sebastopol vineyard and hear why he believes winning top awards means little if you can't connect with people's hearts. The conversation flows from digital reviews and the democratization of taste, to the pitfalls of marketing wine as pure commerce, to modern-day plant medicine ceremonies designed to foster self-discovery, belonging, and reverence. As the layers peel back, you'll come away with a fresh perspective on wine—not just as a beverage, but as a timeless link to the sacred, the mysterious, and the collective human story. And if you've ever wondered why a certain glass makes you feel something inexplicable, or why wine alone among drinks is revered across cultures and epochs, this episode offers more than an explanation—it offers an invitation to experience the “vine intervention” for yourself. Send us a textNo name in the poetical world is more firmly established than that of Fitz-Green Halleck. (Ghost of Poe voice)Edgar Allan Poe wrote these words about Fitz green Halik for Graham's Magazine in 1843. This episode will take a look at Halleck as inspiration for some of America's first homoerotic works. My name is George Bartley, and this is Episode Episode 383 - to clasp thy hand in mine revisited. This is the first of a series of podcast episodes for Pride months dealing with some of the individuals in Poe's literary circle - some of the I people who were responsible for some of the earliest homoerotic literature in the United States. If you have been listening to past episodes of Celebrate Poe, you probably know by now that I really like memory aids - especially when introducing a new subject or individual. Probably the most important name to remember is Fitz-Greene Halleck. At first, I wasn't sure if the name was pronounced HALeck or HAYeck - but think of the computer Hal in 2001 - A Space Odyssey - Hal - who has the famous line “I'm sorry Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.” Think Hal - for Halleck. And if I say HAYLeck instead of HALeck - which I probably will do - just chalk it up to me pronouncing the word wrong - it should be HALeck.Fitz-Greene HALeck was born in 1790 - almost 20 years before Poe - in Guillford, Connecticut. Haleck and Guilford had an interesting relationship - it is said that the town never fully accepted Fitz Greene, and even though Halleck moved back to Guilford for the last two decades of his life, it appears that he never really felt at ease in his own hometown. Now when Fitz-Greene was two years old, two drunken soldiers were passing by his father's front door. The soldiers thdought it would be funny to discharge their rifles loaded only with powder right next to the side of the infant's head. They thought it would be funny to watch the infant scream. As a result, little Fitz-Greene had severe hearing problems in his left ear for the rest of his life - often appearing isolate in his relationships with other people because he just wasn't able to hear what they said.Thank you for experiencing Celebrate Poe.
