Jake Shears is the opposite of a fun sponge, he's the life and soul of every party, a positive force. Jake is the frontman of Scissor Sisters, a band which made a huge impression on pop and club culture; their debut album was the biggest album in the UK in 2004. Jake and Scissor Sisters came up in the gay scene of New York and with their fun loving, extravagant performances, the band were instrumental in paving the way for other mainstream queer artists. Now a solo artist, Jake has written for and toured with Kylie, duetted with Cher, starred in Kinky Boots on Broadway and recently wrote the lyrics for the sold-out 'Tammy Faye' musical alongside good friend Elton John, who wrote the music. He has just released a new single ‘Too Much Music' ahead of the release of his life affirming new album ‘Last Man Dancing' - a big love letter to club culture and pop music. In this conversation he discusses growing up in different places in America, coming out, starting out in New York as a Go-Go Dancer before Scissor Sisters exploded, struggles with his identity when the band finished and the changes he has experienced himself and in his relationships.Changes is a deaf friendly podcast, transcripts can be accessed here: https://www.anniemacmanus.com/changes Hosted on Acast. So, my American guests often talk about go-go dancing as though it's this super common thing, and I always feel a bit too dumb to ask too many follow up questions. But, this week I put all of that aside and asked EVERY. SINGLE. DUMB question there is to ask about the art of go-go. And I was in good hands because this week's guest, Steve V Rodriguez from the Talk About Gay Sex podcast, used to be a go-go dancer in the 90s. We caught up to talk about N Touch, the San Franciscan bar where he first shaked his booty. A,nd along the way we talk about jockstraps vs thongs, playing it straight in Hollywood, and having sex with your favourite porn star.... Do you have any memories of N Touch, or clubbing from your own queer scene that you want to share? Well, if you have please get in touch - I want to create the biggest online record of people's memories and stories - go to www.lostspacespodcast.com and find the section 'Share a Lost Space' and tell me what you got up to! Show: Forensic FilesEpisode: Deadly MatrimonyJohn Smith, not the 1600s one, was a real unlucky douchebag. Both of his wives somehow ended up missing! In 1974, his first wife Janice disappeared after a night working as a Go Go Dancer. She left without taking her clothes or car, or telling anyone where she was going. In fact, no one knew what happened to her until 21 years later. His second wife, Betty Fran, went missing too. Could John just be unlucky or is he a total psychopath murderer? I think we know the answer already. Gogo dancers. Rum shakers. Performance artists. Whatever you call us, you know when you see us that your night out is going to be that much better. Dancers occupy an interesting space in our collective psyche. As much as we are envied and literally placed on a pedestal, we are often misunderstood and dismissed. Why is that? In this episode, Pola (@russiancoffee) and Carole (ofmillenial) explore the nuances of how dancers are perceived, both inside and outside of the industry, as well as how these understandings might have arisen. We also reveal a look into a day in the life of a performer, for anyone who has ever been curious about what it's like to step onto that pedestal. This show is a MUST LISTEN. We welcome Dallas’s one and only Amanda Murdock. Amanda talks about being adopted and growing up with a wonderful family and meeting her biological Mom and finding out that she also has a biological brother meeting him and loving and spoiling her nieces. Amanda, Marcella and Whitley start talking about sneaking out when they were teenagers. Amanda shares her sad story when her Mom got cancer and she moved to Oklahoma to take care of her. Then we get into how Amanda moved to Dallas because she fell in love with a guy and the Dallas Nightlife. Amanda met Marcella at the same club her boyfriend was a bouncer and Marcella was a Go Go Dancer called Zouk, Dallas. We then refer back to Episode 15, when Marcella shared her abusive boyfriend story and that leads us to learning that Amanda dated an abusive boyfriend who actually was the ORIGINAL KING OF DALLAS. We then learn that he was the one that brought Marcella’s ex into this pretend Dallas Monarchy of Kings. Gabrielle wants to know all the qualifications it took to actually become a King of Dallas. We learn that you had to be into, but not limited to steroids, cheetah hair, rhinestone belt buckles, side bitches, taking your shirt off in the club, standing on tables and swinging your shirt around etc etc. The main attraction to dating these royals was that you did not have to stand in line at the club. We then discuss that Amanda’s ex boyfriend was also very abusive and she is having a very hard time talking about it, because she is still protecting him.Speaking the truth is healing so Gabrielle asks Amanda more direct questions about the abuse and Amanda then does tell us that cheating, beatings, black eyes, choking etc were on the weekly menu. Police was never an option. She talks about the one epic fight that led her to being hospitalized with a concussion and other injuries. After that she told her Dad and finally got away after 3 years of abuse and got her independence and became her own QUEEN OF DALLAS without the dreaded Kings. Her King however has apologized several times over the years and feels tremendous guilt about his actions and seems to be a changed man who is married and has 2 children. Her advice to others is to leave immediately at the very first sign of any abuse or cheating. Gabrielle takes it one step further and tells everyone that if there is yelling or screaming or name calling or any disrespect at all, you leave immediately. No second chances. Marcella agrees and says that you cannot fix those actions and they will never change.

"The Dancing Accountant" dishes on how she stands out to clients Nancy McClelland loves dancing so much, when she decided to start her own firm, she called it The Dancing Accountant, LLC. She shares some great insight into how opening up to her clients about her hobby makes her seem more human and less intimidating. Being a professional 1960's Go Go Dancer was something that Nancy had always wanted to try. Shortly after a milestone birthday, she realized that it was now or never, so she began taking classes in Chicago. Just four short months later, she was asked to join The Janes Go Go Troupe and began performing at events all over the city -- including at one of her client's venues! Nancy graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education and went straight to work as the Business Manager at the Ann Arbor School of Performing Arts. Someone along the way gave her a CCH Tax Guide and that's when she realized she should get her Masters in Accounting, pass the CPA Exam and start her own firm.
