Recently, Scarlett attended a burlesque show, where she met one of our two new guests, Northern Joy, the co-founder of the performing burlesque troupe. Scarlett couldn't resist inviting her to share her story with the GBW gang. Additionally, another new guest, Caramelo, tags along for the ride.Joy starts the conversation by recounting her accidental foray into the world of burlesque through an audition that turned from reading for a 1-page script to a 3-month show. She tells the group about how this one-off chance turned into a life-long passion, eventually leading her to the troupe she has co-founded today. She dishes on all the drama that comes from working closely with people that love to be front and center at all times, and how she encourages her performers to take the inevitable drama in stride and stay respectful and mature. The conversation shifts to exploring the gender dynamics of burlesque audiences and tipping etiquette in burlesque venues. Joy also clarifies the expectation for nudity in burlesque shows and the key differences between strip clubs, drag shows, and burlesque, which leads to a discussion of what men mostly anticipate from these types of performances (ahem, boobs). The group laments how much of a blessing and a curse boobs can be before getting back to Joy's burlesque experiences and her own comfort level with performing nude. Joy explains how having the support of a female-driven workplace and her family helped her to embrace her passion and learn to not pass up on the opportunities that her burlesque talents provide her. Scarlett then asks whether Joy feels any voyeuristic tendencies that led her to seek out performing burlesque, to which Joy explains that getting herself to a place of being comfortable stripping in front of others was actually a challenge. She talks about the strategy she learned of checking in with her inner “twelve-year-old self” and her inner “death-bed self”, and how these two perspectives helped her to go with her gut instinct and make the jump. Willow takes the conversation to a more personal level asking about how Joy navigates partners and personal relationships within the burlesque community. The group talks about the complexities of navigating relationships within a variety of sexual and social communities and shares their approach to personal relationships within their own respective relationships. I'm going to let you in to a little secret! I love the art behind Burlesque dancing and learning to burlesque dance and perform live once in my life is at the top of my bucket list. So you can imagine how excited I was when I recently came across Judith Vandepeer otherwise known as "Pupin Devert". Judith started burlesque 3 years ago at the age of 55, and absolutely loved it. She really wanted to capture something about herself that she'd not shown before and to show a glamour which fully embraced her age, size and her newly grown out natural grey hair. The fact that she's a fellow silver and very sassy woman was the icing on the cake. Judith is burlesque performer based in Hastings, and has been performing burlesque for over 3 years, as well as producing her own shows - both live and online. Travelling with her acts all over the UK and abroad, and has collected national and international titles in burlesque and cabaret. Judith is also a ‘Grey Model' and loves creating body/age/sex positive images, as well as working on commercial shoots for companies such as Snag Tights and The Bias Cut Boutique. She is passionate about wanting to create a space which is positive and judgement free, and wants to spread the message that ‘Burlesque is for Everyone' We had so much to talk about and I love Judith's new found body confidence and how she's smashing down those midlife stereo-typical barriers, showing other women in their 50's that we are definitely not invisible. I met MISSA BLUE after one of her hypnotic burlesque shows, a political, challenging and riveting performance history of the Black Panthers. Missa Blue is a well known variety performer who has gained international recognition through her highly skilled sword swallowing shows and for being one of the very few woman in the world who are still actively practicing this ancient art form. In 2016 she survived a life threatening accident on stage. This has pushed her to become an activist for Performers of Colour in international show business. She has since been called a role model for her fight against racism and for more visibility of black female performers in the industry. In this episode, I talked to Missa about growing up as a young black girl by white German parents, losing her mother at a young age, battling her father's alcoholism, her struggles with anorexia, and how performance art has brought her healing and restored her power and identity. But very slowly started in classical dance eventually made my way there through an accidental booking. Somebody just thought that because I did pinup modeling and danced that I did Birla skin. Mccready bitch. And then the moment I did the show might life started to change completely. You are open in burlesque. You're open to all kinds of bunny types, but you're open to all kinds of people everything is so fluid and. Forward thinking, although they're taking styles from the past like such old elements but they're still opening people's mind so much so that it's considered me. Sure sexy in Lega, frowned upon way, because it's too forward thinking for a lot of people, it's not very labeled so echinacea that kin intimidate of you. But if you go in with an open mind, you'll meet a world of characters that will continuously teach you through art through teasing in the show, but the performance themselves, if you, if you find when you start to get to know them. It's, it's a whole other world of study where you're like, oh, wow. I'm a better human being right now. So it's not just about how you feel about yourself. This week on the podcast we talk to Burlesque Dancer and Bartender Rosie. We caught up with Rosie a while back at Holiday Cocktail Lounge one night when she was behind the bar. First, let’s talk a bit about garnishes. Cutting that fruit - It’s something we do everyday behind the bar, but nobody really talks about it!  I say - take some pride in that task!  You need a sharp knife to cut good looking garnishes.  I carry all my bar tools with me in a bag and I have 2 really sharp small paring knives in there. It makes cutting the fruit a pleasure. These knives are very inexpensive and a worthwhile investment. The pith - the white parts of the fruit - are bitter and can impart a odd flavor after it sits in a drink for awhile.  Try to remove as much as possible. Of course when cutting the lemons and oranges you want to remove as many seeds as possible.  What’s worse than getting a lemon seed in your mouth when you are sitting at a bar, trying to make conversation? It takes a little longer, but what you end up with is some nice fresh looking fruit. How about twists?  I love to do my twists a la minute’ or “to order”.  I use my y-peeler and get a nice long thick piece of zest with no pith and express those oils over my drink.   A well done garnish gives a visual cue to your guest that this we put some attention and care into making that drink.    Herbs are tough to keep fresh.  I’ve come up with this method for my mint, which does keep it pretty good looking for a while, but what I really want is a little garden just outside where I can cut mint right out of the ground more or less as I need it!   ASAP after the mint is delivered, I cut off the very bottom of the stem like you would if you had flowers you were going to put in a vase, so that it will drink up as much water as possible.  Then place that bunch of mint in ice water, stem side down. Let it sit there around 20 minutes or so, but less time seems to be ok too.  The cold water “shocks” the herbs, “setting” the color.  Then drain the mint, but not bone dry. I’ll make small bundles that will fit nicely and fold the bottom of a paper towel over the cut stems then gently roll it all up so that the everything is covered. I’ll take my small bundles of wrapped herbs and put them in a resalable gallon plastic bag.Every day or two I’ll change the paper towels, to keep it from getting mushy. As for cherries and olives - well luxardo cherries are just awesome and impressive in your drink. The luxardo cherries are expensive, that’s for sure, so if you are using them, don’t forget to factor that into the price of your cocktail.  In Jeffrey Morgenthaler’s great  The Bar Book: Elements of Cocktail Technique he says that he likes to remove the cherries from their liquid and store them in brandy. As for olives, he removes them from the brine, which of course is saved for making Dirty Martninis and he store the olives in Dry Vermouth. Book of the Week: The Bar Book: Elements of Cocktail Technique by Jeffrey Morgenthaler Cocktail of the WeekBrown DerbyThis is a delicious cocktail.  I first had one at the Flatiron Lounge many years ago, it was a real ah-ha moment for me.  It was absolutely delicious … I had never had one before.  It just made me realize that a drink made with just 3 ingredients, if they are perfectly balanced and high quality ingredients to begin with is really what a perfect cocktail should be.  I add a small amount of lemon juice to the classic recipe, which “brightens it up” a bit. 1 3/4 oz Bourbon 1 oz Freshly Squeezed Grapefruit Juice ¼ oz Freshly Squeezed Lemon Juice ½ oz Honey Syrup (1:1 honey dissolved in hot water) Shake.  Grapefruit twist.
