Si je vous dis « personnage de Noël », vous pensez à un vieux monsieur bedonnant dans un costume rouge qui distribue des cadeaux en traîneau. Cette dame aux cheveux blancs, en robe rouge et verte, avec son sourire bienveillant. Contrairement à son célèbre époux dont l'image orne chaque espace commercial, on ne la voit pas beaucoup.Pourtant, à la base, dans plusieurs traditions, c'est une femme qui distribuait les cadeaux. La Befana en Italie, la Babouchka en Russie, Tante Arie en Franche-Comté. Des femmes âgées, autonomes, qui accomplissaient leur mission seules, sans mari en vue. Mais la Mère Noël moderne apparaît en 1849 dans la littérature anglophone comme « Mrs. Claus » - littéralement « Madame Claus ». Elle n'a même pas de prénom. Elle est juste définie comme « femme de ».Vêtue de rouge et vert, elle prépare des biscuits dans sa cuisine pendant que son mari distribue les cadeaux. On l'imagine aussi repriser ses chaussettes. Cette invisibilisation symbolique fait encore écho aujourd'hui à une réalité bien concrète : durant les fêtes, ce sont massivement les femmes qui assurent le boulot et la charge mentale. Décoration du sapin, achat des cadeaux, planification des repas, organisation des réunions familiales, gestion des invités...Le Père Noël est en fait une femme épuisée qui reste dans l'ombre.Heureusement, dès 1889, des autrices proposent une version différente. En 2016, la publicité iconique de Marks & Spencer la transforme en super-héroïne qui sauve Noël en hélicoptère. In this episode, we dive in and give you everything you need to know about Epiphany. If you're planning on going to Rome this year, we highly recommend booking your hotels (and potentially even your flights) as soon as possible. Dicembre è il mese di Natale e, in Italia, ogni regione lo festeggia con delle tradizioni e delle abitudini molto particolari. In questa lezione scopriremo quali sono! Natale nelle diverse Regioni italiane: un mosaico culturale festivo 1. VALLE D'AOSTA Tra le tradizioni più interessanti del Natale in Valle d'Aosta c'è la sagra del pane micooula (in dialetto, “un po' piccolo e un po' speciale”), preparato proprio nel periodo natalizio e fatto con castagne, noci, uva passa e fichi secchi. La tradizione ha origine da una leggenda: come consuetudine, la sera della Vigilia di Natale, una donna di nome Rosa si stava dirigendo in chiesa per la Messa. Poiché era in ritardo, prese una scorciatoia attraverso il bosco e si trovò di fronte a un vecchio mulino abbandonato, noto per essere la dimora di spiriti, streghe e altre creature maligne. Tuttavia, la donna non era spaventata perché sapeva che Dio vegliava su di lei. Così, quando le comparve davanti un enorme serpente minacciandola, Rosa gli chiese cosa volesse per ritrovare la retta via smarrita. Il serpente le chiese un pezzo di pane dalla chiesa in cambio della sua vita salva. Rosa accettò e, tornando dalla Chiesa, diede al serpente il pane benedetto. Dopo averlo mangiato, il serpente si trasformò in una colomba bianca, che spiccò il volo verso il cielo. 2. PIEMONTE In Piemonte la tradizione del Ceppo di Natale è molto conosciuta. Si tratta di un tronco d'albero decorato con candele, che viene acceso la sera della Vigilia di Natale. Ma era così popolare che… è diventato anche dolce! Infatti, è molto comune preparare un tronchetto dolce per il pranzo natalizio, fatto con cioccolato, panna, brandy… Probabilmente, questa tradizione è stata influenzata dalla Francia (vicina al Piemonte), dove è molto comune la Bûche de Noël per Natale. 3. LOMBARDIA Il famosissimo panettone natalizio, un dolce lievitato ricco di canditi e uvetta, è nato proprio in Lombardia e qui, ancor più che nel resto d'Italia, è un must per il cenone (e il pranzo) natalizio. Ma come è nato il panettone? Ci sono varie leggende al riguardo. La più accreditata narra che il panettone sia nato per errore durante il pranzo di Natale preparato per Ludovico il Moro (XV secolo). Il cuoco di corte avrebbe infatti scordato nel forno il dolce che stava preparando, facendolo bruciare. Lo sguattero Toni, però, trovò la soluzione per servirlo lo stesso: unì all'impasto salvabile burro, uvetta e canditi! Diede così origine al “Pan di Toni”, poi divenuto “panettone”. 4. TRENTINO-ALTO ADIGE In Trentino si festeggia il Krampuslauf, una parata di Krampus (figure demoniache dai denti aguzzi e dalle lunghe corna). Queste figure sfilano per le vie delle città, spaventando grandi e piccini ma soprattutto scoraggiando i cattivi comportamenti dei bambini durante il periodo natalizio. 5. VENETO A Venezia, soprattutto nel passato, la figura della Befana era più popolare di quella di Babbo Natale. I bambini, infatti, non aspettavano i regali da Babbo Natale, ma proprio dalla vecchina, la “Marantega”, che, nella notte tra il 5 e il 6 gennaio, riempiva le loro calze con piccoli doni, dolci, caramelle, frutta secca, mandarini e, per i più monelli, anche qualche pezzo di carbone. Perciò ancora oggi, ogni anno, a Venezia, viene organizzata la Regata della Befana, una cerimonia decisamente unica nel suo genere rispetto alle celebrazioni per la Befana nel resto d'Italia. 6. FRIULI-VENEZIA GIULIA La tradizione più affascinante, antichissima ma ancora oggi viva e sentita, è quella dei Pignarûi. Il Pignarûl sembrerebbe legato all'adorazione di Beleno (o Belanu), antica divinità della luce. Beleno era uno dei principali dei pagani per il quale si eseguivano sacrifici e riti. Tra questi vi era l'accensione di falò sulla cima dei colli, forse anche in onore della sua compagna, Belisma, dea del fuoco. Così ancora oggi, dopo secoli, la sera del 5 gennaio e soprattutto la sera del 6 gennaio...

In this episode, Mary and Emma discuss the meaning of January 6th as the Feast of Epiphany. According to the Christian Liturgical Calendar, this day commemorates the three Magi's visit to the scene of the nativity and marks the end of the Christmas season. In the Appalachian tradition, Epiphany was known as "Little Christmas" or "Old Christmas," hearkening back to Old World traditions of extending the Christmas season over 12 days as an extended period of celebration and rest, ending with "Little Christmas" on January 6th. Du nom d'une drôle de sorcière qui, selon la légende, distribue, la nuit précédant l'Épiphanie, des bonbons aux enfants sages et du charbon à ceux qui n'ont pas été gentils. Mise à l'arrêt en 2019, en raison de la pandémie, la fête renaît avec de nouvelles attractions, à la grande joie des visiteurs qui pourront en profiter jusqu'au 6 janvier. De notre correspondante à Rome, Des rires, des regards émerveillés par les spectacles de marionnettes avec en vedette Pulcinella, personnage emblématique de la commedia dell'arte, le petit théâtre de Marvin Bucci, installé derrière la fontaine de Neptune, est une des nouveautés de la Fête de la Befana. Et Aldo semble aussi heureux que ses deux bambins « C'est super ! Il y a plein de monde, les enfants jouent avec des copains… On est tous ensemble à faire la fête. » La place Navone accueille 70 stands où l'on trouve toutes sortes d'objets artisanaux, notamment pour la décoration des crèches. Stefania De Angelis est une « presepista ». Elle crée des crèches en bois, des santons et autres éléments, selon un savoir-faire ancestral. « Pour notre famille, être sur cette place est une tradition. Ma belle-mère y était depuis 1944. J'observe une forte envie de se retrouver ensemble, de refaire les crèches et aussi l'envie de paix. Revoir la place avec tant de gens, cela m'émeut. » Parfums de douceurs sucrées Émotions, plaisirs et légèreté dans un bain de parfums mêlant marrons chauds, barbe à papa et mela stregata : une pomme recouverte d'un glaçage rouge flamboyant. Explications du commerçant Alfiero Tredicine. « La mela stregata est une spécialité romaine qui remonte à l'époque de la guerre. On l'aime vraiment beaucoup… Et à partir du 29 décembre, on verra de grandes chaussettes suspendues autour des stands pour la Befana ». La Befana est une sorcière bienveillante censée se déplacer sur un balai volant pour récompenser les enfants sages en garnissant leurs chaussettes de friandises, à l'occasion de l'Épiphanie. Mais avant, on attend bien sûr Babbo Natale… Juste à côté du manège, qui semble sorti d'un conte de fées, autre nouveauté : une boîte aux lettres pour soumettre ses désirs au Père Noël et à l'édile de Rome. Lisa, 10 ans, et Elio, 11 ans, nous confient ce qu'ils demandent au maire. « Pour ma ville, je voudrais que les rues ne soient plus envahies par les ordures et moins de pollution », dit l'un des enfants. « J'aimerais tant que les pauvres deviennent comme nous : ni riches ni pauvres ; la sérénité pour toutes les personnes », s'exclame l'autre. Avec ces paroles de sagesse, Lisa et Elio découvriront certainement leur chaussette remplie de petites douceurs par la mythique Befana.
