Welcome to the 6th Round Retro Post-Fight Show, featuring UFC 50 ‘The War of ‘04’. This is the show that digs into the archives and gives you a comprehensive review of classic MMA events, that span as far back as UFC 1. Join Eddie Mercado and Vic Rodriguez of Bloody Elbow as they relive UFC 50, complete with results, analysis, and of course a few laughs. On October 22, 2004, UFC 50, a seven-fight card, went down from the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, New Jersey. This was approximately six months before the fight that basically changed everything for the UFC at the time, which was Forrest Griffin vs. Stephan Bonnar — we are talking right before the UFC really took off, the era pre-dating Reebok, USADA, Five-Round Main-Events... before title fights were mandatory Main Events, among several other pivotal things! So, the main event that night showcased none-other-than ‘The Huntington Beach Bad Boy’, Mr. Tito Ortiz, who was just coming off a two-fight losing streak against the likes of Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture; Tito had only lost 4 fights in his total fourteen bouts in the UFC, at that time. He was up against an up-and-comer in Patrick ‘The Predator’ Cote, who came into the octagon for his UFC debut that evening on a five-fight winning streak, undefeated in his career with TKO Major League MMA; who stepped in when Guy Mezger was scratched due to ‘Stroke Symptoms’ at the last minute. Also on the card, the co-main event featured Matt Hughes, who was carrying a ton of wins under his belt, who took on AND defeated the legendary, Georges St. Pierre; via an armbar submission, at just 4:59 into Round 1 of 5. In addition to that quick finish, we saw Rich Franklin battle it out against Jorge Rivera for 14:28 minutes in a three round bout, with ‘Ace’ snagging a slick armbar submission for a finish near the very end against ‘El Conquistador’. Main Card: * MAIN: Tito Ortiz DEF. Patrick Cote by Unanimous Decision after three rounds: Light Heavyweight (non-title match) * Rich Franklin DEF. Jorge Rivera by submission (Armbar) at 4:28 of round 3, 14:28 total: Middleweight * Co-Main: Matt Hughes DEF. Georges St.-Pierre by submission (Armbar) at 4:59 of round 1: Welterweight * Frank Trigg DEF. Renato Verissimo by KO/TKO (Elbows) at 2:11 of round 2: Welterweight * Evan Tanner DEF. Robbie Lawler by submission (Triangle Choke) at 2:22 of round 1: Middleweight Prelims: * Ivan Salaverry DEF. Tony Fryklund by submission (Body Lock) at 1:36 of round 1: Middleweight * Travis Lutter DEF. Marvin Eastman by KO/TKO (Punch) at 0:43 of round 2: Light Heavyweight If you enjoyed our show, "heart" us here on SC, or give us a “like”, share & subscribe over on one of our other BE Presents Podcast Channels: YouTube: www.youtube.com/channel/UCFoX81d3fNHrcUckyQdRzLQ iTunes & Apple TV: itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/blood…&i=1000421882228 Google Play: play.google.com/music/listen?u=0#…m6qmvqn4yqvivru74 iHeartRadio: www.iheart.com/podcast/269-Blood…Presents-30639274 Spotify: open.spotify.com/show/55S2dpKYVqn…kESkWZigLNnEg1ugn Stitcher: www.stitcher.com/podcast/bloody-e…esents?refid=stp TuneIn: https://tunein.com/podcasts/Sports--Recreation-Podcasts/Bloody-Elbow-Presents-p1190843/ OverCast: overcast.fm/itunes984162015/bloody-elbow-presents Player FM: player.fm/series/bloody-elbow-presents ... whichever one happens to be your listening platform of choice. An icon of MMA and keystone to the success of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Tito Ortiz overcame a tough upbringing to not only hold a UFC belt, but build business after business through hard work and dedication. Watch the full episode on YouTube – https://youtu.be/Ixs6ovUUmxg Born to drug addicted parents, Tito Ortiz began life living in motels, cars, and other people’s garages. He started hanging out with gangs before his conscience kicked in. He ditched the life of crime to earn money fishing. It didn’t take long at school for physicality to get his attention. A successful school wrestling record saw him starting out as a wrestling partner for UFC fighter Tank Abbott. At the time because of his education, if Tito got paid to fight, he’d lose his scholarship. So he fought for free, twice in one night at UFC 13, beating one Wes Albritton in under a minute, before getting caught in a submission by Guy Mezger in the finals. Tito Ortiz’s career saw him win a world title after one year of competition, before he held on to it for over four years, fighting to defend it five times. Tito’s mixed martial arts record is a list of UFC royalty and more. With wins over Wanderlei Silva, Ken Shamrock, Vitor Belford, Forrest Griffin, Ryan Bader and more, he knows what it takes to succeed through dedication and commitment. Now set to take on Chuck Liddell, who came out of retirement to challenge Tito, he’ll have one last chance at redemption. Away from the Octagon, Tito started Punishment Athletics clothing company in 1999. He’s also heading up Primetime 360, a fighter management company that’s doing right by athletes, with a roster including 20-1 women’s featherweight champion, Cris Cyborg. Away from the sport, TO Auto Group – a wholesale car business, is another passion of the UFC legend’s. His goal is to change the stereotype of a used car salesman. As if that wasn’t enough, Tito is also enthusiastic about pursuing a career in acting. It’s dedication that’s seen him do right by himself and others, diversifying what he sets his mind to but keeping the commitment level high at all times, whether in or out of the cage. Episode Highlights : How instinct kicks in for anyone to survive, whether that’s in a fight or making money in business. With Tito, his start was selling fish on the pier, aged nine years old. The importance of picking the right road when you’re faced with options. For Tito, the choices were prison, death, or where he is today. While passion is priority, it’s important to have an exit plan. How priorities and aims change, particularly when you become a parent. Find your metaphor for motivation, whether it’s something that happened in your past or an experience of someone else you can draw from. Mike and Elias talk to Ken Shamrock ahead of the Penthouse Panel in Chicago, when Shamrock, Frank Shamrock and Guy Mezger will host a cozy Q&A with fans. Shamrock relives the glory days of his career and the Lion's Den. Mike and Elias also look back at UFC 211 and break down Stipe Miocic and Joanna Jedrzejczyk's respective dominant performances.
This week we bring on Petie and we talk a little bit about the bad boys of MMA and their mis-steps. We also talk with Guy Mezger about HDNET Fights and get into some of the dirty little secrets of promoting.
Buyer Beware. Dan ''The Caveman'' Hawley is on the show and man does he know how to throw down. Let's just say he lives a crazy life! If you don't like cussing, sex, and Rock'n'Roll then don't listen to this podcast. We also bring on Guy Mezger to talk about HDNET Fights and their direction.
Kris & David are joined by Dominic Garrini (@dgarrinibc) to discuss the *rest* of the week that was January 30-February 5, 2000, as we did the WCW, WWF, & ECW sections of that week last year. (So this show takes care of that outstanding Patreon request.) We talk about the first round of the PRIDE Grand Prix tournament at the Tokyo Dome and all the major news from that show, which was the catalyst for a new beginning for the world of MMA. On that tip, we talk about Kazushi Sakuraba's star rising amidst controversy surrounding his fight with Guy Mezger, a pissed off Ken Shamrock accidentally getting Bas Rutten his commentary job, a disgraced Nobuhiko Takada, and much more. We also talk about the rest of Japan including the debut of the Giant Baba statue in All Japan, the greatness of Alexander Otsuka, assorted indy scum shows, and lots more. We also talk about the lucha libre and US independent scenes, as well, including CZW’s Night of Main Events with Justice Pain vs. Nick Gage. It’s great being back in the saddle again after a rough couple weeks, so listen now!!!!!
