The Sunshine Double zit erop. Presentatie: Robert Denneman
With Miami reaching its climax, Catherine, David and Matt catch up to discuss scheduling issues, more struggles for top players, and what might happen over the weekend. Part one - WTA Results. We start with a rant about the scheduling before moving on to happier things and Alex Eala's incredible run to the semi-finals. The flip side of that, however, is digesting a shocking performance from Iga Swiatek. What can we expect from her clay court season as her title drought continues? There's also chat about an encouraging tournament for Emma Raducanu as well as Aryna Sabalenka, Jessica Pegula and Jasmine Paolini discovering some of their best form. Part two - ATP Results (from 38m57s). We hail Grigor Dimitrov's incredible effort to beat Francisco Cerundolo and reach the semi-finals, revel in a couple of wonderful wins for Arthur Fils, and wonder if Alexander Zverev is currently playing worse than any world number two ever. Part three (from 61m57s). Any other business including the one year anniversary of The Barge, our next edition of Tennis Re-Lived, and shout outs.
We bevinden ons momenteel midden in 'The Sunshine Double'. Presentatie: Robert Denneman
After a surprising win by Jack Draper in Indian Wells, the ATP Tour moves to the East Coast to complete the Sunshine Double in Miami. Seal Calvert & Nigel Seeley look at the draw for a tournament winner in today's Game, Bet, Match podcast.
Journalist Simon Cambers is the guest on this episode of the podcast, and he recaps the championship level performances by Jack Draper and Mirra Andreeva at Indian Wells. Cambers explains how Draper rounded into form to lift the trophy at Tennis Paradise, and analyzes the British man's potential to be a legit contender in the grand slam events. The writer also discusses why Andreeva has cemented herself as one of the top players on the WTA, and breaks down why the teenager's game is so effective against the best players in the world. Cambers then looks ahead to Miami, and assesses Novak Djokovic's chances to make a run in the second leg of the Sunshine Double. The author dives into Iga Swiatek's frustrations, Aryna Sabalenka's next move, and what to make of Carlos Alcaraz's uneven play. And Cambers chats about his own writing career, having covered pro tennis for over 25 years, and co-authoring the critically acclaimed "Roger Federer Effect" book. Hosted by Mitch Michals.
Can Mirra Andreeva complete a surprising Sunshine Double and a sweep of 1000 events to start the year? Rory Jiwani and Nigel Seeley look at the draws for a winner of the Miami Open.
This week Aidan and Erik discuss the opening rounds from the BNP Paribas Open which kicked off this week in sunny Indian Wells. Often called the "fifth slam" this tournament is the first ATP Masters 1000 event of the year and is also the first part of the "Sunshine Double." So far, this tournament has had no shortage of surprises. From top-seeded Zverev losing in the opening round, to former champion and GOAT Djokovic being ousted early for the second year in a row. Meanwhile, some storylines running through the first few rounds have been quite shocking. With some in person experience, the discussion covers what has happened and what to expect in the coming rounds. Be sure to check back next week for another episode!
This week Aidan and Erik discuss the the final tournaments leading up to the start of the Masters 1000 season with the Sunshine Double kicking off this week in Indian Wells. Some results of these tournaments were pretty shocking, with Tsitsipas emerging victorious in Dubai while Zverev came up empty in the South American swing and in Mexico. Heading into Indian Wells it feels as though anyone has a chance to succeed given the fact that very few players have show consistency this year. Carlos Alcaraz, 2-time defending champion, looks to become only the third player to achieve a threepeat here.
The Sunshine Double starts this week with the WTA 1000 event at Indian Wells. Will Jessica Pegula keep her form and make her way to the finals? Rory Jiwani and Nigel Seeley look at the draw for this week's WTA show.

In a BREAKING NEWS edition of Tennis Weekly we cover the the latest in the Jannik Sinner doping affair after it was announced that Jannik Sinner has accepted a 3 month ban from WADA for testing positive for colostabol last year. The ban is effective from 9th February meaning he will miss the Sunshine Double but return in time for the French Open and Wimbledon as well as a warm up tournament at home in Rome. The case was set to go to trial on 16th and 17th of April and WADA were pushing for a 1-2 year ban finding Sinner was not at 'no fault or negligence' that his experienced team could have avoided Jannik Sinner being 'contaminated' with colostabol, a steroid, that led to two positive tests last year. Sinner was suspended for a matter of hours and days when both tests came to light and successfully appealed both decisions allowing to complete a full season and win two more Grand Slam titles. Joel and Chris discuss how the case was handled, why the change of heart for WADA as well as why it is possible for players to negotiate a ban that is so favourable to them that causes minimal disruption to their schedule and ranking. Does tennis have a serious transparency issue when it comes to doping? pWotD Episode 2685: Aryna Sabalenka Welcome to Popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 368,051 views on Saturday, 7 September 2024 our article of the day is Aryna Sabalenka.Aryna Siarhiejeŭna Sabalenka (born 5 May 1998) is a Belarusian professional tennis player. She is a former world No. 1 in both singles and doubles by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA). Sabalenka has won three major singles titles, at the 2023 and 2024 Australian Opens and the 2024 US Open, and two major doubles titles, at the 2019 US Open and the 2021 Australian Open, both partnering with Elise Mertens. She has won 22 career titles in total, 16 in singles and 6 in doubles. Sabalenka came to prominence in 2017, when together with Aliaksandra Sasnovich they led the Belarus Fed Cup team to a runner-up finish, despite both of them being ranked outside the top 75 at the time. She finished both 2018 and 2019 ranked No. 11 in the world in singles. Following two major singles semifinal appearances in 2021, Sabalenka peaked at the world No. 2 ranking, but struggled to consistently maintain that success in 2022. In 2023, she won her first major singles title at the Australian Open, reached the semifinals at all four major tournaments (also finishing runner-up at the US Open), and obtained the world No. 1 ranking, being named the ITF World Champion for the season. Sabalenka also began playing doubles regularly in 2019. With Mertens as her partner, she completed the Sunshine Double by winning the two Premier Mandatory tournaments in March, the Indian Wells Open and the Miami Open. After the US Open doubles title later in the year, she also qualified for the WTA Finals for the first time. With the 2021 Australian Open doubles title, she became the world No. 1 in the discipline. Sabalenka has a very aggressive style of play, often accumulating high numbers of winners and unforced errors. Ben and Tumaini answer listener questions and recap the month that was in March, where Indian Wells and Miami formed the Sunshine Double and changed some of the forecasts of the sport. We start with Indian Wells, where Swiatek and Alcaraz won their second titles and Novak Djokovic lost early and bailed on the swing. We then head to Miami, where Danielle Collins won the biggest title of her career and Jannik Sinner cemented his spot as the dominant player on tour. We also discuss recent form of Dimitrov, Gauff, Sabalenka, and more. From our mailbag, we also discuss the fairness and merits of wild cards (including for returning dopers), the shrinking status of the Miami Open. (Another episode soon on the huge changes afoot on tour from the Saudi money and Premier Tour jockeying!)
Lucy and Eugene talk Indian Wells and Miami, Q1 of the season and everything that has happened in between. Hear our take on Simona Halep 'bussin' case' and her immediate return to action at WTA 1000 (all while the suspended Mikael Ymer is still retired). Angella Okutoyi of Kenya is Olympics-ready after winning the African Games – where she picked up her first-ever top 100 win – provided she cracks the top 400 in the WTA rankings by the cut-off period. Great Britain's Jay Clarke continues to build momentum after an eventful 2024, racking up wins on the ITF circuit in both singles and doubles. Vogue cover girl Coco Gauff, now 20, had a lot of ‘fans' talking about her game during the Sunshine Double. We get into the unfair criticism that flies around on social media. Keep commenting, liking, sharing and subscribing – we appreciate you all!
Aidan and Erik are back this week to cover the exciting last few weeks of tennis as the Masters 1000 season is kicked off with the sunshine double in Indian Wells and Miami.
