Feeling under the weather? We have something to help with that as, in this week's Bonus Episode, Eleanor is uncovering the mysterious history of folk healers in England!Part of the "Magic and Medicines" series, we start by chatting through who 'Cunning Folk' were, including quite how wide-scale their business was, as well as the time periods in which they were in their prime. This leads us through the years of Renaissance alchemy and characters like Simon Forman and Doctor John Dee, when folk healers operated during historic crackdowns on witchcraft, prompting them to move beyond 'hedge wisdom' to become anti-witchcraft experts! We explore how, after the Witchcraft Act of 1735, cunning folk were forced to adapt, the kinds of services they offered, how and why records of their lives and works began to be recorded during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and some of the remedies they offered for common problems. But has the craft of being a 'cunning man' or a 'cunning woman' ever really gone away? And were many of their methods actually very helpful? Through exploring the lives of people who gave themselves titles like, "The White Witch of Helston," "The Devil's Master" and "The Master of Witches," as well as the ways in which cunning folk have been presented in literature, we reveal some genuine mysteries - and a few examples of wonderful fakery.Which leads us to today, and where we go, in our post-industrial world, to find help with our ills. What has happened to all the Cunning Folk? The answer might just surprise you...The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays (Magic and Medicines about folk remedies and arcane spells, Three Ravens Bestiary about cryptids and mythical creatures, Dying Arts about endangered heritage crafts, and Something Wicked about folkloric true crime from across history) plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. LEONORA NATTRASS  chats to PAUL BURKE about her historical mystery thriller SCARLET TOWN, Laurence Jago, 18th century history, rotten boroughs and sapient hog.SCARLET TOWN 1796. A rigged election. A town at war. A murderer at large...Disgraced former Foreign Office clerk Laurence Jago and his larger-than-life employer the journalist William Philpott have escaped America - and Philpott's near imprisonment for libel - by the skin of their teeth. They return to Laurence's home town of Helston, Cornwall, in the hope of rest and recuperation, but instead find themselves in the middle of a tumultuous election that has the inhabitants of the town at one another's throats.Only two men may vote in this rotten borough, and when one of them dies in suspicious circumstances, Laurence is ordered to investigate on behalf of the town's patron, his old master the Duke of Leeds. But it is no easy matter, thanks to the machinations of the rival political factions, not to mention the riotous performances of Toby the Sapient Hog.Then the second elector is poisoned and suspicion turns on the town doctor, the gentle Pythagoras Jago, Laurence's own cousin. Suddenly Laurence finds himself ensnared in generations of bad blood and petty rivalries, with his cousin's fate in his hands...Leonora Nattrass lectured on the literature and politics of the 18th century for almost ten years before running away to Cornwall, where she now lives in a seventeenth-century house with seventeenth-century draughts and knits the wool of her small flock of Ryeland sheep into elaborate jumpers. Her first novel Black Drop was a Times Book of the Year and her second Blue Water was a Waterstones Thriller of the Month and longlisted for the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year Award.RecommendationsLaura Shepherd Robinson, DV Bishop Abir Mukherjee, Vaseem Khan.Joseph O'Conner ShadowlandsScarlet Town Review on Crime Fiction Lover Paul Burke writes for Crime Time, Crime Fiction Lover and the European Literature Network. SHOW NOTES: https://jewishbooks.blogspot.com/2023/06/pride-month-special-with-aj-sass.html It's June and that means LGBTQ+ Pride Month, the perfect time to talk to author A.J. Sass. Andrew Sass is known for writing middle grade books featuring respectful portrayals of trans and nonbinary characters, with neurodivergent and casual Jewish representation included as well. I was excited to talk with them about a few books: debut novel Ana on the Edge from 2020, Ellen Outside the Lines, which was a 2023 Sydney Taylor Honor Book, and the new Camp QUILTBAG, co-written with Nicole Melleby. I thoroughly enjoyed all of these thoughtful, funny, and heartfelt books. Over half of the books currently being challenged by bigoted extremists are targeted for their LGBTQ+ content. In support of the queer Jewish community, for Pride Month I will post an LGBTQ+ Jewish kidlit title each day in June on The Book of Life's Facebook page at Facebook.com/Bookoflifepodcast. It should go without saying that gender identity and/or age appropriate sexual content does not automatically equal porn or obscenity. Children and teens are human beings who have bodies and experience age-appropriate sexual feelings, and sometimes they need books that will help them understand their bodies and feelings more fully. Queer books save lives, and I'll be proud to share with you excellent examples of queer Jewish representation all month long. LEARN MORE: Visit A.J. Listeners will love adventuring with Callie, a nonbinary twelve-year-old determined to become a knight. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Emily Connelly discuss Esme Symes-Smith's audiobook narrated by Dani Martineck with emotion and great energy. Callie lives in a realm with very strict boundaries between genders—only girls study magic, and boys stick to swordplay. Callie forges their own path ahead, with a pinch of magic and a great deal of determination—but a lot stands in their way. Martineck shines in their portrayal of this confident character in the confines of a disapproving world. Young listeners will love hearing this fantasy story where Callie and their new friends triumph, helping make the path ahead better for all. Rising UK singer-songwriter The Gleeman gets ready for the festive season with wistful new single ‘I Love Christmastime', releasing it one month before the big day.Having hit the scene with his debut EP ‘The Gunslinger' earlier this year, The Gleeman is set to round off his 2022 with ‘I Love Christmastime', a song sure to stir up memories of childhood glee every 25th December. In the spirit of singers such as Don McLean, Robin Gibb and Billy Joel, The Gleeman's voice takes you back to an era gone by, and with mentions of reindeer, Santa and the North Pole all name-checked to ring in the season, the festive excitement is almost palpable.‘There is nothing as heart-warming as witnessing the wonder on a child's face at Christmas – we all connect with that feeling. Leaving out mince pies & carrots, struggling to sleep through excitement, listening for the faintest sound of sleigh bells. “I Love Christmastime” takes us all back to that childhood innocence and reminds us of the joys of Christmas, no matter our age.' – The GleemanThe Gleeman grew up in the small West Cornish town of Helston, a short drive west of Falmouth, where his early passion for music saw him move through the ranks from the recorder to guitar to the school choir, and cornet in the local brass band. He was influenced by his love of piano men such as Billy Joel and Elton John, but was more a child of ‘80s pop, from Adam & the Ants to Frankie Goes To Hollywood, and via Queen on to the ‘90s bastions of Britpop. The Gleeman is set to release his debut album ‘Something to Say' in 2023. The album follows on from its debut EP ‘The Gunslinger', released in 2022, and a string of singles such as ‘Armistice Day' and ‘Hanging Around (The Ballad of Aaron & Amy Pt 3)'. Produced by Will Hicks (who has worked with likes of Ed Sheeran, One Direction and James Blunt), the album touches on themes of mental health, life milestones and loss balanced with uplifting and quirky storytelling. There will be a run of live performances from The Gleeman preceding ‘Something to Say', be sure to keep an eye on this significant new performer. Hosted on Acast. As well as the Vase, there’s a big Under-18 game coming up on Monday as Helston host Brockenhurst in the FA Youth Cup and we hear from the team’s two managers Stu Giles and Martin Daughtery, while as always we have our resident guests Cam Weldon and Phil Hiscox keeping us up to date with Truro City and the Kitchen Kit Ltd South West Peninsula League respectively. We’ve got loads of interviews with managers from around the county – from Penzance across the Duchy to Callington and including one with Tony Howard of Storm FC. In this episode we have some more thoughts about the Kernow Football Alliance as joint team manager Darren Gilbert suggests he’s keen to help the project succeed. And as we spoke after the midweek Helston v Bodmin, we also asked him about the game. As well as Gilby, there’s Mark Pratten the chairman of Millbrook. We have the manager of the first Saturday team to win their league as Threemilestone Reserves wrapped up Trelawny Division 4 last week. Liam Patterson, their manager, also confirms that the “pint a goal” offer for his prolific striker Chris Shackley did not go ahead. That’s saved Liam a lot of money! As usual Rappo is on hand to give us his “Bet of the Week”, his Combo review and join me in our Predictions on five games throughout the weekend’s football programme. The Blues travel to Weston-super-Mare on Tuesday and the management team of Stu Giles and Martyn Daughtery spared CORNISH SOCCER some time ahead of the match to give their thoughts on what will be a special day whatever the outcome. Amidst the interview the club Chairman Paul Hendy phoned Stu to finalise the coach arrangements! As Stu said every club has special people behind it and Paul is one. Every club also need sponsors and well done to Scorse Foods Ltd for the tracksuits and Meneage Dental for the kit and training tops. We wish Helston the best of luck in this journey.
