Jenna Barnard and John Pattullo, Co-Heads of Strategic Fixed Income, join Adam Hetts, Global Head of Portfolio Construction and Strategy, to talk through their views on bond markets. They explain why they think bond yields have behaved logically throughout the year and why they disagree with the pervasive linear thinking of higher bond yields ahead. Bond markets are signaling where interest rates are heading but people seem to be oblivious to the message. Key Takeaways Bond yields in 2021 have behaved logically, reacting to the rate of change in economic data. As such, the peak in sovereign bond yields (in March/April) coincided with the peak in acceleration in the rate of economic growth. Yields have since declined with the deceleration in the rate of change of economic data and not, as the media would put it, because of short covering or the Delta variant. A clue to the bond market's thinking on the long-term outlook for rates came after the U.S. Federal Reserve announced two rate hikes in 2023; the yield curve flattened as it would at the end of a hiking cycle, signaling a lower long-term neutral rate of interest. Next spring/summer will prove interesting for the bond investor. This is because we expect to see a reverse base effect – i.e., the base effects that drove inflation up this year will be very hard to beat next year, and we expect to see the first signs of what the structural outlook will be in terms of inflation. We are open‑minded to potential new lows in bond yields occurring next year. Find out more on our website: https://bit.ly/3eFkLxG Making finance consistent with the delivery of a net-zero and resilient economy is the crucial third goal of the Paris Agreement. As the UK seeks to deliver its target of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050, a more systematic approach to financing is now needed. Net-zero is increasingly recognised as an important goal by leaders within the UK's financial community, but it is not yet embedded into routine decision-making and policy. Strikingly, COVID-19 has deepened rather than deflected financial sector commitment to climate action. The way the UK exits from COVID will profoundly shape its ability to meet its climate targets and achieve wider economic goals, not least in terms of levelling up prosperity across the country. An ambitious green recovery plan that accelerates investment in a net-zero, resilient and just transition is not just needed, but is also called for by business, finance and citizens. Building on the recent report, The Road to Net-Zero Finance, produced for the Climate Change Committee, this webinar will delve in to how we can kickstart the process in 2021. Speaker: Nick Robins joined the Grantham Research Institute in February 2018 as Professor in Practice for Sustainable Finance. Nick leads the sustainable finance research theme. The focus of his work is on how to mobilise finance for a just transition, the role of central banks and regulators in achieving sustainable development and how the financial system can support the restoration of nature. From 2014 to 2018, Nick was co-director of UN Environment's Inquiry into a Sustainable Finance System. As part of this, Nick led country activities in Brazil, the EU, India, Italy and the UK, as well as thematic work focused on investors, insurance and green banking. Before joining UNEP, he was Head of the Climate Change Centre of Excellence at HSBC. Prior to HSBC, Nick was head of Sustainable and Responsible Investment (SRI) funds at Henderson Global Investors. Nick has also worked at the International Institute for Environment and Development, the European Commission and the Business Council for Sustainable Development. Impact Leaders - Impact Investment and Performance with Purpose
WHEB Asset Management is a positive impact investor focused on the opportunities created by the transition to a low carbon and sustainable global economy. Seb Beloe is the Head of Research and leads the integration of sustainability analysis within the investment process, as well as overseeing engagement activities. Previously, Seb was Head of SRI Research at Henderson Global Investors where he led on the identification and analysis of sustainability themes and company-level corporate responsibility analysis. Prior to Henderson, Seb was the Vice President of Research and Advocacy at SustainAbility. He has published several reports on sustainable business, and has been a member of numerous corporate advisory boards and awards panels. Seb has two degrees in environmental science and technology, from the University of East Anglia and Imperial College and is a Chartered Environmentalist. Highlight: You must have a long term perspective in investing. “...what’s really changed is the level of interest in sustainability and impact investing from institutional investors and retail investors as well.” We see an ESG stampede around some particularly high profile companies that are clearly providing some kind of low carbon solution. The most obvious example is Tesla. Methodology on measuring the impact and taking numbers from a company e.g. Kingspan and translating the impact into energy saved and carbon emissions. Engagement during company Annual General Meetings and proactive engagement to speak with companies’ management. You have to analyse companies and be actively looking at how they are reducing carbon emissions. It is important to frame the conversation around the business case, not just because its good for the planet. Large institutional investors are required to at least think about ESG issues, but they are also under a lot of pressure from their own beneficiaries to invest in a more responsible way. Financial sector is not beloved by people, it’s not trusted very much, but they like to invest in funds with people that they think they can trust. The partners have majority of their own money invested in the fund. THe EU green taxonomy is a very strong signal where the european economy is heading. “it's been a real privilege working with people who have that real sense of mission around environmental issues“. Nick Robins, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Across the world, there are growing efforts to connect the financial systems with the strategic goal of achieving sustainable development. Financial institutions, financial regulators and central banks are increasingly incorporating environmental and social factors into the activities. The G20 has championed green finance and the Financial Stability Board has promoted climate disclosure - both unthinkable a few years ago. This momentum is promising but remains insufficient. This lecture will review the evolution of this agenda, the role of the UN Environment's Finance Inquiry and some of the key that can be taken in 2017 to accelerate progress. Nick Robins Biography: Nick Robins works at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), where he is co-director of the inquiry into the Design of a Sustainable Financial System. The Inquiry promotes policies that better connect the financial system with long-term sustainable development. The Inquiry published its first global report. The Financial System We Need, in October 2015 and the second edition, From Momentum to Transformation, in September 2016. His particular focus has been on national initiatives in Brazil, the EU, France, India, Italy and the UK, along with action in key sectors such as banking, insurance and institutional investment. Nick Robins has over 20 years' experience in the policy, research and financial dimensions of sustainable development. Before joining UNEP, he was Head of the Climate Change Centre of Excellence at HSBC in London from 2007 to 2014, where he produced investment research on issues such as lean tech and climate risk. In the Thomson Extel awards for European investment research, Nick was ranked as no 1 analyst for integrated climate change in 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013. Prior to HSBC, Nick was first head of Sustainable and Responsible Investment (SRI) research and then head of the SRI funds at Henderson Global Investors. At Henderson, he published the first ever carbon audit of an investment fund (2005) and co-designed the Industries of the Future fund. Nick has also worked for the International Institute of Environment and Development, the European Commission's Environment Directorate and was part of the original Business Council for Sustainable Development. Nick has authored two books - The Corporation that Changed the World: How the East India Company Shaped the Modern Multinational (2006) and Sustainable Investing: the Art of Long-Term Performance (with Cary Krosinsky, 2008). He has also produced numerous reports and has had articles published by the Financial Times, the Guardian, and Huffington Post.
