Interview guest - Bevis Watts (CEO of Triodos Bank UK, a leader in ethical and sustainable banking)Co-host - Ed Dick (CEO of Great Yellow, a company that sources long-term capital for nature restoration projects)We're often joined by guests on Planet Possible who identify and look to take action to solve the challenges that we face in our water and environment. But we don't often talk about how the work gets paid for. We know that water customers' bills can provide funding for environmental improvements or flood schemes, and governments can pay directly for infrastructure improvements. At a level beyond this, though... who benefits when we improve our natural environment and therefore who is willing to fund those improvements and why? Plus, a bigger question... how do we get better at truly valuing nature in a way that global financial structures can understand, work with and amplify?Could green finance be the answer? Can it play a massive part by funding the planet-positive projects, innovations and processes that can start to address the world's urgent environmental challenges?Helping to answer these questions are two expert guests. Our main interview is with Bevis Watts, the CEO of Triodos Bank UK and to help us navigate this topic our co-host is Ed Dick, the CEO of Great Yellow. **********Find out more about the projects that Bevis mentions in the episode...Wyre NFM project: press release and video overview of the finance modelOxygen Conservation: web articleRead how Triodos has pioneered commercial investment in nature-based solutions. The Hidden Power of Sovereign Wealth Funds in Tackling Climate Change

Send me a messageIn this episode of the Climate Confident Podcast, I had the pleasure of speaking with Dr Ana Nacvalovaite, a research fellow at the University of Oxford's Kellogg College Centre for Mutual and Co-Owned Business. Ana brought a wealth of insight into a fascinating and complex topic: the role of sovereign wealth funds in advancing sustainability, tackling climate change, and driving equitable global development. We started with the basics—what sovereign wealth funds are and why they matter. Think of them as government-managed investment funds, often backed by surplus revenues from resources like oil, which aim to secure economic stability for future generations. But, as Ana explains, their influence extends well beyond national borders. With trillions of dollars under management, these funds are increasingly pivotal in shaping ESG (environmental, social, and governance) strategies and supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals. We explored how sovereign wealth funds from countries like Norway, the UAE, and China are pivoting towards green technologies, renewable energy, and sustainable infrastructure. Ana also shared why transparency varies so much between funds and how geopolitical strategies can limit what the public—and sometimes even stakeholders—can access.Of course, we didn't shy away from the challenges. Greenwashing, the lack of global standards, and the delicate balance between profitability and sustainability were all on the table. Ana explained how sovereign wealth funds can be both a force for good and a source of contention in developing countries, particularly in regions with weaker regulatory frameworks.By the end of our conversation, one thing was clear: sovereign wealth funds are not just passive players in global finance; they're active architects of a sustainable future. Whether it's mitigating climate risks or funding net-zero technologies, their potential is enormous, but so too are the responsibilities that come with managing such immense capital. For anyone interested in sustainability, global finance, or the interplay between economics and climate action, this episode offers a wealth of insights. Shipowners are not having to woo bankers right now. They don't need to. If anything it's the bankers' turn to buy the drinks at Posidonia this year and start talking up ways to deploy capital, because shipowners are paying down loans while they can and bank loan deal flows have slowed to a trickle. So there is limited appetite right now to engage with green finance which, for now, comes with little incentive beyond its availability in a market awash with options. But that is a situation that is going to change much quicker than many realise and there is a strong argument that the industry should start talking about that shift sooner rather than later. Capital has already started to become more selective around sustainability criteria and that trend is only set to continue in one direction. Ultimately, it is a trend that will change how shipping operates and arguably determine the future direction of the industry. Discussing the implications of green finance in shipping on the podcast this week are: Nina Ahlstrand, global head of sustainable finance DNB Markets Anastassia Tcherneva, head of shipping clients at ABN Amro Bank Alexander Saverys, chief executive of Euronav and CMB Michael Parker, global industry head of shipping & logistics at Citi and chair of the Poseidon Principles

Hear from Dr. Jakob Thomae, Project Director for the Inevitable Policy Response, as we discuss their latest forecast and what it means for the transition to net-zero. Scenario analysis is the natural tool for anyone wanting to understand how climate-related risks might evolve over coming decades. The vast majority of climate scenarios, regardless of who produced them or what level of warming they predict, tend to report similar levels of physical risk over the next couple of decades or so. However, predictions about transition risk tend to be quite different between scenarios. This episode focuses in on the transition, and in particular the extraordinary work being done by the Inevitable Policy Response (IPR) to figure out the most likely course of the transition to net zero. We'll explore: ·         The IPR's surprisingly optimistic forecast, and they believe the world might look like by the end of the century; ·         The methodology behind their forecast, and how it differs from the scenarios produced by other groups; and ·         What this forecast means for risk and finance professionals. China's critics contend the Belt and Road Initiative is dead or dying due to a mix of gross mismanagement and hubris. The data, however, reveals a very different story. While lending has definitely decreased considerably from its peak in 2016, the BRI is very much alive -- it just looks very different today than it did even a few years ago.Instead of expensive large-scale infrastructure projects in Africa, the Americas, and Asia, Chinese lenders are now focusing more on smaller initiatives related to technology, renewable energy, and connectivity. In fact, Chinese creditors lent more money to finance green energy initiatives in the first half of the year than in any other 6-month period since the BRI launched a decade ago.Christoph Nedopil, founding director of the Green Finance and Development Center at Fudan University has been closely tracking the evolution of the BRI and joins Eric & Cobus to discuss what the latest data on BRI lending reveals about its future.JOIN THE DISCUSSION:X: @ChinaGSProject| @stadenesque | @eric_olander | @nedopilLinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/nedopilFacebook: www.facebook.com/ChinaAfricaProjectYouTube: www.youtube.com/@ChinaGlobalSouthFOLLOW CAP IN FRENCH AND ARABIC:Français: www.projetafriquechine.com | @AfrikChineعربي: www.akhbaralsin-africia.com | @AkhbarAlSinAfrJOIN US ON PATREON!Become a CAP Patreon member and get all sorts of cool stuff, including our Week in Review report, an invitation to join monthly Zoom calls with Eric & Cobus, and even an awesome new CAP Podcast mug!www.patreon.com/chinaafricaprojectSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
