Irish company Kingspan has been heavily criticised in the final report of the inquiry into the Grenfell Tower fire in London in 2017 which led to 72 deaths.Ian Guider from the Business Post joins The Last Word to discuss the report which found that Kingspan and two other firms engaged in a deliberate strategy to mislead the market about their products.Catch the full discussion by pressing the 'Play' button on this page.
Kingspan has been heavily criticised in the final report into the Grenfell disaster. 72 people died in the 2017 blaze. The report found Kingspan and two other firms engaged in a deliberate strategy to mislead the market about their products. The Irish company produced only 5% of the tower's combustible foam but has been accused of “knowingly” misleading authorities about the results of tests done on the product. Kingspan sponsors Ulster Rugby and Cavan GAA. Ciarán Dunbar is joined by Belfast Telegraph reporter Liam Tunney. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
On Thursday's Rugby Daily, we hear from Northampton's Courtney Lawes on the significance of Croke Park ahead of Saturday's Investec Champions Cup semi-final with Leinster. Ireland will warm up for their WXV1 campaign with a test against the Wallaroos in Belfast. And Connacht have made their second signing ahead of next season.
Our Business Editor Will Goodbody reports.
"Never in doubt" Those were the words I was repeating after Ulster's inevitable demolition of Racing at Fortress Kingspan. Christmas has come early. Ulster are class again. Having been luke-warm to tepid so far this season, have Ulster been bubbling away beneath the surface? Are they now ready to boil over following their best performance in over a year? If you missed his post match interview, Dan said that he and some senior members of the squad had been spending time conducting experiments - mostly what 'quick-tap' moves work the best. The results were released against the French side to devastating effect. Next up are poor Connacht (off the back of four straight defeats) are the next guests at the Kingspan and then it's down the road to face Leinster on new year's day. So much to talk about, so much excitement, so much uncertainty. To discuss it all I'm joined by an incredible and incredibly large panel. Nathan, Jack, Ian, Fergus, Daniel and Harry Jones. Harry Jones has his own podcast and you can find him on social media @haribaldijones.

Ireland is underspending on innovation and we need to significantly increase our investment to meet the challenges and opportunities of sustainability and digitalisation. That's the view of IRDG CEO Dermot Casey who says it is vital we support innovative SMEs to create the next generation of businesses like Kingspan and Fexco.
Stuart Braine is the National Specification Manager for Kingspan Insulation. He has over 20 years of experience in the building materials industry and Brent Livy is the National Residential Sales Manager for Kingspan Insulation. In this exclusive interview Stuart and Brent explain why insulation matters, what does the R-value imply and what does it mean for homeowners in practical terms, what are the benefits of insulating a home, why do floors need insulation, which types of floors need it more than others and what the new building code changes for insulation and how will they impact architects and designers. This podcast was brought to you by Kingspan, the world-leading manufacturer of innovative, high performance insulation products which help reduce the carbon footprint of the built environment.
Massive reform and EU membership have brought Czechia and Poland to the average for European national incomes and now they are huge potential markets for Irish companies. That's why the government and Enterprise Ireland are over there today touting the wares of a slew of well-known companies including Smurfit, Kingspan, and ICON. Joe spoke to Dara Calleary - the Minister for Trade Promotion, Digital, and Company Regulation about the types of sectors that Irish companies were hoping to grow in both of those nations.
If you didn't see the game at the weekend, Ulster beat Edinburgh 28-14 to secure home advantage in URC play-offs. Ulster got the job done but, as some have commented, maybe not in the style that some fans would have wanted. Tries from Jacob Stockdale, Nick Timoney and John Cooney and 13 points from Cooney's boot secured the win. It's an interesting time for Ulster. There is talk of trouble in the camp, but the team continue to win on the pitch. A few big names have announced they are leaving and we await news on the status of others. The subject of ulster's performances is dividing fans – are we playing at our potential? Is the atmosphere at the Kingspan flat? Are we good enough to potentially win something this year or is this another year of transition and building? To discuss all these things and more, I'm joined by Nathan Johns, Jonny McCormick, Ross Barnett and Edinburgh fan, Craig Manson from the Scottish Rugby Podcast.

What an absolute delight and pleasure to be in the company of Ayrshire and Scottish rugby legend, Gordon Reid.Gordy gave us some of his earliest memories of his rugby playing background and an insight into his work ethic that made him a professional rugby player. We discussed 2014/15 Pro 12 season where Glasgow won the championship at the Kingspan stadium and Gordy gives us the details of the day. We also talk about Gordy's first cap against USA on the 2014 Tour and the emotion surrounding that day. The conversation moves onto his professional spells with Glasgow, London Irish, Northampton and Wasps, highlighting the differences in approach with each team. We get to find out who Gordy's toughest opponents are and the effect it can have on you playing against a certain Adam Jones. There is a great discussion around the transition out of the professional game and the effects this can have on a player and can more be done from the SRU ?We then move onto his role at Marr as both player and coach, taking scrum schools and taking the U16's. Great chat about a possible tour of a lifetime for the young lads.We managed to get time to go through a quickfire round before finally talking through the Scotland game at the weekend against Wales and what happens in the changing room at half time.
Well, it's official… Ulster are back! Or at least they are progressing to the next stage. I think we're definitely right to celebrate as we haven't had much to celebrate in a while! There wasn't a huge amount of optimism for this winner-takes it all pool match, having won just one in our last 7 matches. Feelings of relief were palpable at the Kingspan. Ulster were improved but not perfect. We are certainly now moving in the right direction but whether this squad can get back to playing to its full potential remains to be seen. Indeed, to progress any further in either competition, we will have to punch above our weight. The Ulster squad and Dan seem to be relishing the challenge. Today's panel have the challenge of explaining ulster's maddening inconsistency and reflecting on a game which will have mixed emotions for our guests.
Almost ¾ of a million Irish homes are heated using oil. That meant that our households were especially vulnerable to the oil price shock - brought upon by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. It means that the Government has had to step in and subsidise energy bills for millions. But what if there was a renewable equivalent of oil that could be used to wean us off that dependency? Speaking to Joe this morning was David Blevins the Ireland country managing for OFTEC - which represents the companies that make liquid fuel storage tanks among them: Kingspan.
It felt like we had been flung back two years into the past as Ulster and La Rochelle took to the Aviva, completely devoid of a crowd save for an “official delegation” from La Rochelle. The decision to move the game from Belfast to Dublin was contentious at best. The freezing of Ravenhill not only cost Ulster a critical home advantage against the European champions, but by Jonny Petrie's estimation, will cost the organisation itself roughly £700,000. Understandably, waves of frustration crashed over social media from Ulster supporters at EPCR's handling of the fixture, compounded by the aforementioned travelling party and the fact that the Kingspan pitch appeared playable on Saturday morning. But the game itself was, well, hard to digest. By half-time Ulster were behind 29-points to nil - an eerie and miserable repeat of Sale's 39-0 drubbing of them a week before. However, in the second-half, the qualities that make Ulster one of the URC's most eminent attacking sides seemed to reappear out of thin air. It's a 40 minute showing that has the potential to reinvigorate a mentality which Leinster seemingly broke two weekends ago. Ulster can head back to the URC with their enthusiasm reinstalled after getting the better of the reigning Champions Cup holders in the second half. Or can they? To discuss and dissect all of the above, I'm joined by Nathan Johns, Caolan Scully and Nigel Quigley.

On our last pod I got views from fans of Leinster, Munster & Connacht on Ireland's Six Nations campaign so to complete the set this week I spoke to Ulsterman Ian Frizzell who looked at our chances for the big match at Twickenham on Saturday. This week, the Inquiry heard how the National House Building Council (NHBC) approved Kingspan's combustible cladding insulation for many years. John Lewis, a fire engineer at the NHBC, admitted that a desire to collaborate with industry was a “corrupting” influence on their actions. It was also revealed that two days after the Grenfell fire, a senior civil servant asked the NHBC to support in public the government's assertion that Grenfell Tower's cladding was not permitted in the UK. Diane Marshall, who held final responsibility for approving building materials at NHBC, repeatedly defended the institution's actions. The Six Nations is upon us and so a weekend full of rugby awaits. There are senior and Under 20 games to preview, as well as Ulster Rugby's visit of Connacht to the Kingspan Stadium. The naming rights of that ground are also on the agenda of this week's podcast, as is Craig Gilroy's controversial yellow card in last weekend's win over Scarlets. Joining host Gareth Hanna to do all that are the Belfast Telegraph's rugby correspondent Jonathan Bradley and reporter Adam McKendry.
In this episode we talk about thermal insulation and how modern technology can help real estate developers make more money by using better thermal insulation solutions.
This week the Inquiry turned its attention to how building regulations were set and combustible materials tested and certified. Lawyers for the bereaved, survivors, and residents accused the government of concealing crucial information from previous fires, and industry bodies of knowingly approving unsafe building materials. Barry Turner, the former Director of Technical Policy at the Local Authority Building Control (LABC), agreed that his organisation's close relationship with insulation manufacturer, Kingspan, affected their response when questions were raised about the fire performance of Kingspan's K15 insulation. Welcome to major Championship flashpoint #4 and this one, got really ugly. It's the Corniche Clash, at the new Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, and we had a lot to talk about here. We had Max Verstappen blow a golden chance to take pole position on Saturday before a mistake had him hit the wall on the final corner, gift-wrapping pole to Lewis Hamilton. We had a ridiculous F2 weekend with cars heading to the grid BACKWARDS, and poor Theo Pourchaire and Enzo Fittipaldi sent to hospital after a 72G impact in a 9 minute feature race. And it barely made the Top 5 in ridiculous dialogue to come from this race. Nope, it was all going to plan until Mick Schumacher put it in the wall early on. 2 Red Flags, 2 Standing Restarts, 3 Virtual Safety Cars and 3 debatable incidents from Max Verstappen later... God help us all. We had Max cut Turn 1 twice to keep position. Michael Masi cutting a PLEA DEAL to balance the books, only for Max to do it again and then get accused of brake checking Hamilton into the final corner in a desperation move to keep the DRS advantage. We try to make sense of it all on the show, including questions as to whether it was an intentional brake check at all. The role the stewards played in the messy weekend, including Masi's plea deal, and the 10-second penalty Max took after the flag. We also talk the circuit, a surprising factor in the imported marshals and some of the tracks obvious slapdash design errors that played a role in how this race was managed. We also talk Mercedes' grand opening and grand closing of the Kingspan partnership they announced during the weekend, with obvious controversy given their association with the Grenfell Tower fire of 2017, and Lewis Hamilton being an innocent bystander as many within the media held him accountable for something that had next to nothing to do with him. And finally, we guess who wins the 2021 World Championship as we head to the newly redesigned Abu Dhabi for the season finale, as well as play tribute to the late great, Sir Frank Williams. Rest easy, you legend. See you next week for the finale.

In the third episode of the PRI's human rights podcast series, the PRI's Elena Espinoza speaks to two members of Grenfell United, a group of survivors and bereaved families of the Grenfell Tower fire, and Simon Whistler, real assets lead at the PRI. The Grenfell Tower fire occurred early in the morning of Wednesday 14 June 2017 in North Kensington, London. It spread quickly through the tower block's 24 stories, taking the lives of 72 people and injuring many more. After the disaster, it emerged that the cladding that was put on the tower during its refurbishment fuelled the fire. As a result of mounting pressure from bereaved families, investors have been selling shares in Grenfell Tower cladding firm Kingspan. In this episode, Grenfell United speak about the ways in which they raised concerns before the fire and how they have engaged with investors who are tied to companies linked with the tragedy. The PRI's Simon Whistler then reflects on Grenfell United's testimony, outlining how investors can strengthen their due diligence processes and describing the lessons that investors internationally can learn. E44 That Great Business Show 2.00' Malcolm Murray, Director of Sales, Sky Media tells us how ten businesses can benefit - for FREE - from a total €200,000 value of TV advertising on Sky channels - €20k of airtime value per business. All the businesses have to do is to make the ad (which may only cost the business €1,500) and then (if chosen) those businesses can advertise nationally or right down to the individual households on Sky channels. Up to 200,000 homes might see your ad up to four times - a great launch for a small business. Sky Media has a system called AdSmart that can identify your perfect audience. Applications must be in BEFORE 3rd of August. She talks about her 'bias'...and discusses how bias in business can skew your business decisions, not always for the better. She explains how she got in touch with Teagasc and how wonderful Eddie O'Neill and Wendy Roberts in Teagasc were in helping develop her product and make it taste like Terry's Chocolate Orange. Having spent 32 years in companies including Kingspan he decided to go out on his own, making and selling products that he creates based on demands that he sees himself in his daily life, particularly around farms and farmyards. He had no plan when he finally left Kingspan and explains how he ended up setting up his own business and how his main product at the moment, his Tipsy Bin came about...and then how MoMate emerged. He explains the difference between a registered design (very cheap) versus (a very expensive) patent that then has to be protected (more costs). He references a Cavan based YouTuber called Adrian Morris who has been a huge help in marketing the Tipsy Bin.His 'hire in a heartbeat' - 'farmer' Jeremy Clarkson 57.00' Carlow based business and mindset coach for women, Lucy Gernon. “Like anyone with ambition you're always looking for the next move”. Michael Rice's career has been punctuated by a series of very significant phone calls, each of them offering him the chance to work in a dynamic new company and environment. And, crucially, every role was a stepping stone to the one that Michael holds today – CFO of Glenveagh Properties. Having worked for some of Ireland's leading entrepreneurs and companies, including Dermot Desmond and Kingspan, Michael Rice was drawn to Glenveagh as it gave him the opportunity to put his own stamp on the role and direction of the business. At the time Glenveagh was a new entity but one that, like Michael, had great ambitions. There was also a potential IPO on the horizon. Looking back on the decision Michael describes it as “a calculated risk, but one that certainly paid off”.In this episode of The EY CFO Outlook podcast, Michael Rice talks to host Vincent Wall about his journey to the position of CFO of publicly-listed Glenveagh Properties, his views on the future of the Irish housing market, and what drives him to succeed. They also discuss:· His experience of working directly with some of Ireland's leading CEOs and CFOs· Executing an IPO and maintaining good investor relations. · Why IT Security keeps him awake at night · The CEO CFO relationship and why it is critical · The advice he would give to other CFOs.
In today’s podcast, WEDA Connect’s Mike Kraemer visits with Laura Juhas from Kingspan, who discusses what makes the TruckMaster a leader in portable diesel storage and dispensing, and her company’s desire to expand distribution and retail sales in North America.
‘Would it be fair… to say that you were set up by others …as Kingspan's useful idiot'? Kingspan Insulation's Managing Director Richard Burnley gave evidence this week. Questioned about Kingspan's conduct after the fire at Grenfell Tower when it held a private meeting to lobby MPs, Richard Burnley denied the company accessed political power for its own commercial gain. The British Board of Agrement also gave evidence. The BBA's Senior Technical Manager John Albon, denied that the BBA was ‘toothless and weak', but admitted it had supported inaccurate claims from manufacturers. Presenter / Producer: Kate Lamble Producer: Sharon Hemans Researcher: May Cameron Studio Mix: Gareth Jones
A safety certificate for insulation installed on Grenfell Tower contained a ‘very basic failure of due diligence'. In 2008 the independent organisation, the British Board of Agrement produced a certificate for a combustible plastic foam insulation made by the company Kingspan. The product - Kooltherm K15 - was later installed on Grenfell Tower. The inquiry heard from staff at the BBA involved in certifying Kooltherm K15. The certificate stated that the product achieved a British fire standard without the BBA ever requesting any fire tests proving the product had actually achieved this. BBA staff were also questioned about how they issued certificates for the combustible cladding panels used on Grenfell Tower. One employee accepted the organisation had published a certificate that was ‘materially wrong'. Presenter / Producer: Kate Lamble Producer: Sharon Hemans Researcher: May Cameron Studio Mix: Gareth Jones
A manager at the BRE accepted he made a fundamental omission when analysing test data. Tony Baker told the inquiry he failed to notice non-combustible magnesium oxide boards used in a test by the insulation manufacturer Celotex. The inquiry also heard from David Jones of Herefordshire Building Control who produced a certificate which incorrectly stated Kingspan insulation was a material of ‘limited combustibility'. This is the standard suggested for use on buildings over 18 metres in height. He admitted taking information at ‘face value' but told the inquiry he was misled by Kingspan. The Six Nations squad has been announced and with it, the usual, inevitable controversy. Host Gareth Hanna is this week joined by rugby reporting duo Jonathan Bradley and Michael Sadlier to discuss, first up, John Cooney's omission from the panel and what it means for his future on both an international and provincial level. Also not in the squad, of course, was Jacob Stockdale, whose injury is worse than first hopes. As well as that, there are the five players who made the cut to discuss - Rob Herring, Stuart McCloskey, Billy Burns, the uncapped Tom O'Toole and Iain Henderson, returning from injury. Back at Kingspan, there's a whole spate of contract renewals coming out but what of those yet to be announced?
Karen Jones from Kingspan & David Emery from Virtechs join Andrew Carpenter.

This week Clare and Dave look at CETA, Noel McGree Whistleblower, Tribunal Costs, An Post, PornHun, Kingspan & Grenfell, Nama & Project Eagle, Student Nurses, SInn Fein & much more
The inquiry heard how technical staff from the insulation manufacturer Kingspan joked that claims about the fire performance of its insulation product – Kooltherm K15 - were “all lies” and the product should be scrapped. Kingspan also hired a PR consultancy firm to help it lobby MPs who were deciding the future of building regulations just six weeks after the fire at Grenfell Tower. Emails also showed that to help justify the sale of Kingspan's combustible insulation on buildings over 18 metres in height, Kingspan carried out a test with a non-combustible insulation deliberately designing it to perform poorly. Presenter / Producer: Kate Lamble Producer: Sharon Hemans Researcher: May Cameron
The inquiry heard more evidence from insulation manufacturers Kingspan. Three of the company's managers were questioned about their involvement in the testing and marketing of the company's combustible insulation. The company's Technical Manager said a contractor who had concerns about the use of Kingspan's insulation had confused him “with someone who gives a damn”. The inquiry also revealed that an official in the Department for Communities and Local Government knew about the risks of using combustible insulation on high rises as early as 2014 – three years before the fire at Grenfell Tower. Presenter / Producer: Kate Lamble Producer: Sharon Hemans Researcher: May Cameron
Former staff from Kingspan, the manufacturer of an insulation product used on Grenfell Tower gave evidence this week. Technical Project Lead Ivor Meredith, admitted he was involved in a deliberate calculated deceit carried out by the company – aimed at achieving the best possible sales for its insulation products. Only a month ago Kingspan withdrew three large scale fire test reports after accepting the product tested did not represent what they were selling. Presenter / Producer: Kate Lamble Producer: Sharon Hemans Researcher: May Cameron
The Module 2 opening statements concluded as the cladding manufacturers were accused of abusing their products' testing and certification processes. Sam Stein, who represents a group of bereaved, survivors and and residents, said the panel “may well come to the conclusion that the manufacturers, Arconic, Kingspan, and Celotex are little more than crooks and killers.” They outlined how they say the manufacturers set out to manipulate fire performance tests, resulting in unsafe products being sold for use on high rise buildings like Grenfell Tower. Staff from Celotex, which made the insulation used on the tower, said they were under pressure to raise the company's profits by bringing a new product to the market. They admitted their marketing material was potentially misleading. Presenter / Producer: Kate Lamble Producer: Sharon Hemans Researcher: Luke Radcliff

Highlight: You must have a long term perspective in investing. “...what’s really changed is the level of interest in sustainability and impact investing from institutional investors and retail investors as well.” We see an ESG stampede around some particularly high profile companies that are clearly providing some kind of low carbon solution. The most obvious example is Tesla. Methodology on measuring the impact and taking numbers from a company e.g. Kingspan and translating the impact into energy saved and carbon emissions. Engagement during company Annual General Meetings and proactive engagement to speak with companies’ management. You have to analyse companies and be actively looking at how they are reducing carbon emissions. It is important to frame the conversation around the business case, not just because its good for the planet. Large institutional investors are required to at least think about ESG issues, but they are also under a lot of pressure from their own beneficiaries to invest in a more responsible way. Financial sector is not beloved by people, it’s not trusted very much, but they like to invest in funds with people that they think they can trust. On this week's episode of The Left Wing, Will Slattery and Luke Fitzgerald are joined by the Irish Independent's Cian Tracey to look back on a cracking weekend of Champions Cup rugby. All four Irish provinces won in Europe, and the lads start off by talking about Ulster's big win over Racing 92. Jacob Stockdale crossed for two more tries and Luke pays tribute to the Irish winger, who is in sensational form. Simon Zebo was allegedly subjected to racial abuse from the Kingspan crowd in Belfast, and the panel weigh in on the incident. Munster and Leinster also enjoyed important wins, with Joey Carbery's form, Scott Fardy's place among Leinster imports and Garry Ringrose's development all up for discussion. Luke also has praise for Connacht after they saw off Sale at the Sportsgrounds in the Challenge Cup.
Connacht win in Belfast for the first time in the professional era and end a run of 26 away defeats that span 58 years of both the amateur and professional rugby era. The Craggy Crew cogitate on a great result, if not a great performance, in an incident pack match. We hear from Connacht head coach Andy Friend, prop Finlay Bealham as well as Ulster coach Dan McFarland.
Michael Smit from Kingspan speaks with Hazel Flynn on what we are really paying, and shifting from fixed costs to variable costs for water.
