Last week, Bank of England (“BoE”) Monetary Policy Committee (“MPC”) member Catherine Mann signalled she is edging closer to backing an interest rate cut, with markets now fully pricing in two reductions by year-end as inflation eases to 3%. The UK labour market is cooling, with unemployment at a cycle high of 5.2%. Small businesses anticipate job cuts due to April's increases in minimum wage and National Insurance. Political uncertainty persists amidst speculation that Manchester mayor Andy Burnham may challenge Prime Minister (“PM”) Keir Starmer. Despite this, institutional investors such as Schroders are increasing UK debt exposure, buying longer-dated gilts, believing monetary policy will outweigh near-term political risks...Stocks featured:Compass Group, St. James's Place and 3i GroupTo find out more about the investment management services offered by Walker Crips, please visit our website:https://www.walkercrips.co.uk/This podcast is intended to be Walker Crips Investment Management's own commentary on markets. They also discuss rising youth unemployment and the potential economic impact of government labor policies, while weighing a cautiously optimistic outlook for UK growth. Marcus also comments on Nuveen’s takeover of Schroders as part of a broader trend of US asset managers seeking international diversification amid dollar weakness. A first! For the first time since our inception 6 years ago, we welcome back a guest for their third visit. General David Petraeus, once described by Simon Sebag Montefiore as the ultimate soldier-scholar, is Chairman of the KKR Global Institute. Prior to this, David had a distinguished US military career and was the CIA Director during the Obama administration. He assesses the heat map of geopolitical and military tensions which is glowing red. Starting with the Indo-Pacific he assesses President Xi's removal of his top Generals, what this might mean, and why peace must prevail despite the undercurrent of tensions.Having returned recently from Ukraine, he then gives some fresh perspectives which challenge stale narratives and describes the immense scale of loss of Russian lives and the technological prowess of Ukraine manufacturing and know-how.He then weights Iran's options; the US's potential moves and the perspective of other Middle Eastern nations.  Finally he offers advice for leaders in an environment where “just in time” has morphed into “just in case”.The Money Maze Podcast is kindly sponsored by Schroders, IFM Investors, World Gold Council and LSEG.Sign up to our Newsletter | Follow us on LinkedIn | Watch on YouTube

Interview with Diane R. Garrett, President & CEO of Hycroft MiningOur previous interview: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/posts/hycroft-mining-nasdaqhymc-nevada-giant-eliminates-debt-targets-2026-production-milestone-8914Recording date: 18th February 2026Hycroft Mining (Nasdaq: HYMC) has published an updated Mineral Resource Estimate confirming 55% growth in Measured and Indicated gold and silver resources at its Hycroft Mine in Winnemucca, Nevada. The deposit now stands at 16.4 million gold ounces and 562.6 million silver ounces in the M+I category, with inferred resources of a further 5.0 million gold ounces and 132.8 million silver ounces. The MRE was prepared by independent third parties and is based on commodity prices of US$3,100/oz gold and US$36/oz silver. The update incorporates results from 70 drill holes and reflects a geological reinterpretation that has fundamentally changed how management and institutional investors view the asset. In late 2023, Hycroft announced the discovery of two new high-grade silver systems, Brimstone and Vortex, within the existing resource footprint. After just 14 months of drilling, those systems have already yielded an initial high-grade M+I silver resource of 90.2 million ounces. Critically, both systems remain open along strike and at depth, and no results from the current 2025-2026 drill programme are yet incorporated into the MRE.Metallurgical test work using Pressure Oxidation has confirmed recoveries of 83% for gold and 78% for silver - robust figures for a refractory sulfide deposit and a key de-risking milestone ahead of a feasibility study. The company is also evaluating a roasting alternative that could convert a processing cost into a by-product revenue stream through sulfuric acid production.Financially, Hycroft is well-positioned to execute. The company holds approximately US$200 million in cash with zero debt, following the retirement of legacy liabilities in October 2024. The institutional shareholder base, led by Eric Sprott at 43%, with BlackRock, Schroders, and Franklin Templeton also on the register, reflects sustained conviction in the long-term thesis. Project economics on the large-scale operation are expected by end of Q1 2026, with an underground mining assessment of the high-grade systems also underway.—View Hycroft Mining's company profile: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/companies/hycroft-mining-holding-corporationSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

Elsewhere, Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) member, Catherine Mann, links US trade wars to UK inflation via higher Chinese export prices. The long-term labour market downturn is stabilising, with candidate availability up and the decline in permanent hiring slowing to an 18-month low. Political uncertainty, fuelled by speculation over Prime Minister Starmer's leadership, has dampened sentiment, leading investors to cut UK asset and debt exposure. After a week in which we in London were blessed with a rare day in which the sun dared to poke its head out, today we will try to shed some light of our own on the big goings on in companies and markets at the moment. We kick off with a look at the breaking news of the day, the £10bn takeover of Schroders by US asset manager Nuveen. Chris Akers is here to discuss the deal, and the possible implications for the rest of the asset and wealth management sector, where there's been another big deal in recent days: unlisted wealth manager Evelyn Partners bought by NatWest. We'll also take a brief look at emerging market specialist Ashmore, which had interims out today and has rallied particularly hard of late. After that, we turn to our big read of the week, looking at the strain on public services and the consequences thereof. Mark Robinson will discuss why the private sector is playing a growing role in the provision of said services – in certain areas – and where they might be expected to take more of the slack in future. Finally, Mark will also look at US economic bellwether McDonalds, which reported some pretty good figures overnight. Is the economy firing on all cylinders, or are more people trading down when they eat out, or a bit of both? Mark will consider these factors as well as the figures themselves later on.Listen to more podcasts from Investors' Chronicle on Apple, Spotify and YouTubeRead more:Schroders bought out in £10bn dealNatWest buys wealth manager in £2.7bn dealThe private stocks taking advantage of government failureMcDonald's beats expectations as sales hold upTimestamps:00:00: Intro01:24: Schroders takeover11:17: Privatisation22:14: McDonald'sInvestors' Chronicle has supported private investors in the UK for over 160 years by highlighting rewarding investment opportunities. MSCI's All-World index is trading near record highs, while South Korea's Kospi has crossed 5,500 for the first time. Meanwhile, Nuveen has agreed to acquire asset manager Schroders for $13.5 billion. In digital assets, crypto markets remain steady despite Blockfills halting withdrawals. Emerging Markets, once the darling of the asset allocators world, have found themselves increasingly discarded by those same allocators. Such became the re-allocation away from them and the magnetism of the US & its technology companies, that as recently as the end of 2024, Emerging Markets were at a 50 year low, relative to the S&P 500. With some improved relative performance, it may be asked if this is a flicker, or are we at the foothills of a bigger reallocation? East Capital's CEO, Peter Håkansson, discusses the opportunities, the lessons drawn from researching them for 3 decades, and what the drop in EM Government bond yields might be signalling. He explains why no central heating might indicate corporate failure ahead, which fundamentals matter, and why they prefer to take their bets in company position sizing, rather than in the country weights. He also discusses Frontier markets, the impact of foreign exchange and as a music lover he is, “reasons to be cheerful!” (Ian Dury & the Blockheads)The Money Maze Podcast is kindly sponsored by Schroders, IFM Investors, World Gold Council and LSEG.Sign up to our Newsletter | Follow us on LinkedIn | Watch on YouTube

Last week the Bank of England ("BoE") released data showing unexpected resilience in November's gross domestic product ("GDP"), which expanded by 0.3%, surpassing the 0.1% forecast and ending a two-month decline. The growth was driven by a rebound in both services and manufacturing, aided by Jaguar Land Rover's recovery following a cyberattack, despite ongoing structural risks. At the same time, BoE Governor Andrew Bailey defended the importance of economic institutions and open trade, urging resistance to populist attacks and warning that undermining bodies such as the International Monetary Fund ("IMF") weakens their ability to highlight economic risks. Meanwhile, the Office for National Statistics ("ONS") may delay its new labour market survey by six months, potentially until May 2027, due to technical difficulties. Adding to concerns, the Institute for Public Policy Research ("IPPR") highlighted vulnerabilities in the UK economy, noting that supply chain disruptions linked to China could cost £1.5 billion annually for solar projects and jeopardise 90,000 electric vehicle jobs unless the government implements a 'securonomics' framework...Stocks featured:Pearson, Schroders and WhitbreadTo find out more about the investment management services offered by Walker Crips, please visit our website:https://www.walkercrips.co.uk/This podcast is intended to be Walker Crips Investment Management's own commentary on markets. In this Christmas special, we reshare our conversation with Nicky Gumbel!  Very occasionally one individual can have a disproportionately powerful impact on a collection of people, but very rarely does that person's impact grow in time and reach, and expand beyond anyone's expectations and for millions, be responsible for enhancing their lives. In this episode we explore a slightly different realm: religion. Our guest, the Reverend Nicky Gumbel, talks of his own odyssey from barrister to clergyman, before widening both awareness and access to Christianity to those outside the church via the Alpha Course.  Alpha - a term which we usually employ in a very different context on the podcast - effectively rebranded and modernised Christianity for a new generation in the 1990s, with tens of thousands of courses being run by the end of the decade. The programme has now been translated into 112 different languages, and 30 million people have taken part.  In this interview he explains his own pivot to faith, how he was asked to take charge of the Alpha Course development, and in the subsequent years how its reach was extended globally. He explains how he built it into a global brand, how charismatic leadership can be relevant to all fields, the changing relationship between faith and secularism, the role of religion for prisoner rehabilitation, as well as thoughts on morality, money and giving! Blair explains the high yielding Ares-managed listed vehicle, ARCC, which as a business development company (BDC) structure must distribute 90% of taxable income and averages 9% of yields*. He discusses how being a public entity gives them a “currency” which is highly valued by employees, and also how it has helped with brand recognition as its growth accelerated. We discuss European capital markets and the structural reliance on bank debt versus private credit (the inverse of arrangements in the US). He explains how it is changing, as well as the current headwinds and opportunities ahead. He discusses why over 1,400 conversations take place in Europe each year, but Ares makes less than 50 loan investments in direct lending, how they are deploying over $100 billion of dry powder firmwide, and the criteria that matter for them. He explains their focus on the middle market, their ownership of sports assets – including a $500 million preferred equity stake in Chelsea FC – and their other media and entertainment investments. Finally, Blair responds to the question around the growth of credit secondaries and continuation vehicles, assessing the motivation behind the growth, and risks associated with the wealth management sector's increasing allocation to this space.   The Money Maze Podcast is kindly sponsored by Schroders, IFM Investors, World Gold Council and LSEG.  Sign up to our Newsletter | Follow us on LinkedIn | Watch on YouTube  (*AUM as of 30/09/25, BDC distribution stats as at 04/11/25)

Three investment experts from Schroders join us on today's program to discuss what's happening, including climate and crop insurance industries, insurance linked securities, and private market opportunities. Irene Lauro, an Economist at Schroders, focuses on climate issues; Christophe Etienne, is a Senior Natural Catastrophe Specialist on the Insurance Linked Securities team at Schroders Capital; and Martin E. Diaz Plata is Head of Private Equity Investments at Blue Orchard, an Impact investment manager owned by Schroders that runs the only private equity strategy in the world solely dedicated to climate insurance.

When someone speaks with a deep of understanding of the banking and finance systems, is widely respected, and then expresses a strong but debatable view, about a developing asset class, we think it's important to hear that voice and to challenge and distil its key messages.   So in this episode we welcome back a former guest who appeared on the MMP in March 2023 during the banking storm, during with Silicon Valley Bank and then Credit Suisse. His conclusion was unequivocally that this was no repeat of the 2008 GFC, as has been proven.  In addressing his recent report from Oliver Wyman, titled “private credit is reshaping wealth portfolios”, we wanted to challenge him on several issues, including; Is it that innocuous? Is this a trend which will serve big private asset firms at the expense of individuals? How about bad times and souring loans? Does the loss of liquidity matter? Are we swapping risks from the regulated banking sector to the unregulated world of the giant private market firms?   And so Huw and I face off in a discussion on the risks and opportunities that are the hallmarks of this fast-growing slice of the investing world.  The Money Maze Podcast is kindly sponsored by Schroders, IFM Investors, World Gold Council and LSEG.   Sign up to our Newsletter | Follow us on LinkedIn | Watch on YouTube

This week, in an episode from the Allocator's Edge mini-series of the Value Perspective we're joined by Fabio Cecutto, the Head of Listed Equity at Willis Towers Watson. Fabio brings a wealth of experience, having joined Willis Towers Watson in 2006 after roles at JP Morgan Asset Management in their multi-manager division and as a sell-side analyst at Banca IMI, part of Intesa Sanpaolo. In the episode, we explore how Fabio and his team assess the qualitative side of fund managers, especially when past performance can be misleading; the differences between boutiques and larger firms; the role of behavioural psychology in team structure; and finally, how to stay grounded when the feedback loop between process and outcome is painfully slow. Has the demise of London's leading financial services been "greatly exaggerated", and does the underlying evidence tell a very different story? In this interview, held at Mansion House in the historic City of London financial district, the Right Honourable Alastair King (696th Lord Mayor of the City of London) explains his view that the UK enjoys an unrivalled position, untouched by other European capitals.   He explains London and the wider UK “moat”, and why it exhibits persistency and resilience. Perhaps the most unexpected statistic is the significant growth in employment numbers in the City since Brexit. He discusses the importance of the Mansion House Reforms and the £75bn of investment by 2030, headed into private assets. He discusses why we must recognise that we need to take more risk, judiciously but emphatically (and this is directed at both public and private markets).  Lord Alastair then touches on the lessons we can learn from Canada and Australia and his current priorities. Finally, he explains why we need to get on planes/trains in order to trumpet the UK and drive new business opportunities.  The Money Maze Podcast is kindly sponsored by Schroders, IFM Investors, World Gold Council and LSEG.   Sign up to our Newsletter | Follow us on LinkedIn | Watch on YouTube

Frank Holmes, chief investment officer at U.S. Global Investors — also the executive chairman at Hive Blockchain — says that investors should adjust to market conditions that are “sunny but … windy,” with more volatility and changing conditions but generally pleasant and not hard to navigate through “because we're in a secular bull market.” Holmes discusses the recent strength in the gold market — where he advocates for a mix between holding the metal and owning miners — and in crypto markets, where he says adoption is key to continued growth and value creation. Deb Boyden, head of U.S. defined contribution at Schroders discusses the firm's annual Retirement Survey, which showed that Americans who are retired are facing a reality that is significantly different than what they expected during their earning and accumulating years, which is adding surprising amounts of financial stress to their golden years. Plus Chuck answers a question from a listener who, like Chuck's wife Gail, has a portfolio that is too heavy on equities, where he needs to figure out how to best make changes to better reflect age and risk tolerance.

Economist John Stuart Mill observed that “landlords grow rich in their sleep". Yet, as evidenced by the failure over the years of many real estate businesses, success is also highly dependent on entry price, debt levels and execution.  Brookfield, based in Toronto, has developed over 120 years into one of the world's largest alternative investment management companies, with over $1 trillion of assets under management.  It is also one of the world's largest real estate operators, and in this conversation, Brian starts by tackling the questions of “how you buy well” and “what goes wrong”?  He then discusses the most significant geographical opportunities, from hospitality in Spain to student accommodation in the UK.  He elaborates on the themes that unify the world of real estate, the blurring of lines between real estate and infrastructure and the “chronic shortage of housing” that is common to the US, Australia, the UK and Korea.  The Money Maze Podcast is kindly sponsored by Schroders, IFM Investors, World Gold Council and LSEG. Pete the Planner's advice for Gen X's retirement dilemmas

Coming after the baby boomers, Generation X is often referred to as “the forgotten generation,” the self-reliant generation and perhaps the last free-range generation. Today, you certainly could argue that it's  becoming the financial-panic generation. The first Gen Xers hit the workforce right around the time pensions gave way to 401(k) accounts with self-directed invested assets. Recent studies indicate that Gen Xers who have retirement accounts have saved on average somewhere in the neighborhood of $180,000. That's well below the $1 million popularly seen as the minimum requirement for beginning a comfortable retirement. (Of course, the ability to sustain income in retirement depends a lot on your spending habits and the quality of life you try to pursue.) Nearly 50% of Gen Xers don't even have a retirement plan, according to asset management firm Schroders. So IBJ Podcast host Mason King began compiling some of the most common questions his fellow Gen Xers ask about pending retirement or, if need be, semiretirement. For example, when is the best time to start taking Social Security, especially given that it's headed for a funding deficit early next decade? What exactly do you do with your 401k funds once you retire? And what should you start doing today if your retirement savings are in the five figures or low six figures? In this week's episode of the IBJ Podcast, columnist Pete the Planner weighs in on the big questions for Gen X and warns against a common strategy for diversifying portfolios that King thought was genius.

If you are an asset allocator, what is the most effective way to widen your lens on identifying potential investment managers? And if you are an investment manager, how can you be more effective in meeting some of those key allocators who might transform your business?  In April 2020, Ron Biscardi launched iConnections, whose platform allows managers to share fund information with allocators.   Ron started iConnections as a small virtual events platform during COVID-19, with 'no money, no employees, no software and no clients'. In just five years, it's grown into the world's largest cap intro platform (facilitating 35,000+ meetings, so far!). Ron explains how his background in engineering and then capital introduction led him to found the business. He explains why they built the technology, rather than buying it, and discusses the enduring attraction of conferences. Plus he also covers why data is the great enabler to help attendees maximise their productivity.  Finally, he discusses why conferences such as iConnections Global Alts (Miami) is so successful, and how gathering intelligence, meeting your peers and building your brand can follow.  The Money Maze Podcast is kindly sponsored by  Schroders, IFM Investors, World Gold Council and LSEG.  Sign up to our Newsletter | Follow us on LinkedIn | Watch on YouTube
