For the love of cycling - Jai Hindley

I've got a cracking episode for you this week, one I've been sitting on for a while and I am so excited to bring it to life. We needed to start at the very beginning with this one, because I know you want to hear as much as I do, the whole Jai Hindley story, and it's such an epic one that you won't want to miss a bit of it. I sat down with Jai earlier this year at TDU, because I just couldn't miss the opportunity to record this episode in person.   He's one of the great talents and great personalities of the pro peloton. He's the Aussie kid made good, who grew up only ever wanting to become a pro cyclist. And at just 26 years of age, he has not only realised that dream but he's also already become one of the greatest in our history. He is a true cycling purist, he loves everything about the sport - he loves vintage bikes, he was drawn to the Tour de France as a 6-year-old, there was really nothing else he ever wanted to do - he just loves cycling to the core. And this always comes across when you chat with Jai, his pure love of the sport. He loves the history of the sport and the classic era of cycling, and he was inspired by the Aussies in the European pro peloton in the early 2000s, which I loved chatting with him about. But most of all, he's just a top bloke and his humble and unapologetic nature are a big part of what make him such a great champion.   We had an in-depth chat about how he got into cycling (as a 6-year-old no less), and we talked at length about his early time as an amateur racing in Italy. To say he has had an astronomical rise since then is, of course, an understatement. His breakthrough came when he won the Herald Sun Tour, followed by his infamous second spot in the 2020 Giro d'Italia, where he lost the pink to Tao Geoghegan Hart in heartbreaking fashion on the final stage (I'm sure I don't need to remind you of that one). But most notably, last year, he came back to take an incredible Giro d'Italia victory, becoming the first Australian ever to do so, and only the second Australian ever to win a Grand Tour. Of course, I couldn't interview Jai without also touching on the speculation and pressure that will accompany him into the Tour de France, where he's learning to manage the expectations that inevitably now rest on his shoulders.   If you don't know Jai too well, you'll love getting to know him in this episode, where he is candid and utterly himself – a trait that cycling fans have come to know and love. I hope you enjoy the listen and getting to know this young Aussie legend as much as I enjoyed recording it!   Cheers,   Mitch

In this podcast Geoff & Gerry speak with Bart Bowen. There is a first for everything since Bart was interviewed being a passenger in his motor home, which worked out great! Bart was a professional cyclist from 1990 to 2000, he was most notably the National Road Champion in 1992 and 1997. He also won the Herald Sun Tour in 1992 and the Tour of Japan in 1997. Bowen participated six times at the World Road Championships with the American team. Bart has been running his coaching and cycling studio business for over 15 years now.We talked about how Bart got started with cycling during college and being an elite skier at first. It was very interesting to hear all about starting at the Subaru-Montgomery team and the impact Eddie B had. Bart's first professional race was on the biggest stage imaginable; the 1990 World Championship in Utsunomiya, Japan. Bart explain how that came about and the contribution he had supporting Greg Lemond who came in 4th that year. Bart did a lot of racing in Europe and explains what it was like to spent and extended period over there during the spring classics time and what it was like to race monuments like: Milan- San Remo, Amstel Gold race and Paris-Roubaix.Cyclocross had a substantial place in Barts career and it was great to learn how his cyclocross skills contributed to his road racing, racing with and against the McCormick brothers and also doing a couple of cyclocross races in Europe.Today Bart run's a cycling studio from which he coaches and trains many cyclists. We touch on Zwift and the possibilities it gave Bart to keep on coaching during COVID and the lockdown, and how Zwift made him expand his reach across the globe organizing structured training rides. All in all this was a fun and very informational podcast, we hope you enjoy the listen and would love to get your feedback!

It's a gloomy summer's morning as Val and Faith welcome Sarah Hammond and Jesse Carlsson to the studio. We kick off with our respective bike moments, before moving on to local bike news incuding Damien Howson's win in the Herald Sun Tour and the 2016 Cycling Victoria Awards. Jesse introduces us to the Indian Pacific Wheel Race, coming up in March, talking about the inpiration behind the event, the history of intrepid overlanders in Australia and the type of race he hoped to create. Sarah Hammond tells us what she is looking forward to in the race and the novelty for Australian racers of riding on home turf. Both are looking forward to seeing the community response to the race, particularly as riders come through major cities such as Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney and we discuss the type of support riders might enjoy along the route. We finish up with some local events including Melbourne Bike Rave this weekend and the World Naked Bike Ride, which unfortunately won't co-incide with the the Melbourne leg of the Indian Pacific Wheel Race. We didn't have the chance to mention it on the show but cyclists in the City of Yarra and particularly those who approach Napier St from Edinburgh Gardens may want to have a look at the Protect Fitzroy North website about a planned development that will have a big impact on this route in terms of car traffic.
