Chapeau voor Ellen van Dijk. Ondanks haar rugklachten blaast de concurrentie op de tijdritfiets weg. Zij is volgens Michael dé tijdritspecialist. Joost wijst erop dat van Dijk is nu al voor de derde keer wereldkampioen tijdrijden, dus is ze nu Nederlands recordhouder.  Verder hebben de heren van de Kopgroep te doen met Stefan Küng. Hij pist opnieuw nét naast de pot. Dit keer versloeg hij Ganna en Evenepoel, maar de Noor Tobias Foss was hem heel verrassend 3 seconden te snel af. Michael vraagt zich af of Küng op het laatst niet iets meer moest gaan stampen op de grote plaat. ''Het zag er nog te mooi uit, het had wel wat viezer gemogen.''    En dit keer een heel bijzondere monsieur 69. Er gingen bij de mannen slechts 48 renners van start, dus daarom een kleine ode aan de nummer laatst, Alam Drabir uit Bangladesh. Hij reed de tijdrit met een gemiddelde van 34.6 kilometer per uur. Joost denkt dat Michael zelfs in zijn huidige vorm sneller zou rijden.   Verder valt op dat er ook een renner uit het Vaticaan de wegrit bij de mannen gaat rijden. Hierdoor geïnspireerd ziet Joost hierdoor nog wel een kans om ook een keer op een WK te starten.   Ook kijkt de Kopgroep vooruit. Bij de wegrit voor de vrouwen zien ze grote kans voor zowel Annemiek van Vleuten als Marianne Vos. Ook bij de beloften mannen maakt Nederland een grote kans om wereldkampioen te worden met bijvoorbeeld de gebroeders Van Dijke of Olav Kooij. En kan de tridente de Van der Poel, Van Baarle en Mollema opboksen tegen de Belgische tandem Evenepoel en Van Aert?

This week we talk about the Ceratizit Challenge by La Vuelta and speculate a little about the upcoming World Championships. Oh and Annemiek van Vleuten.

Na drie weken koers maken Joost, Mart, Maxim en Michael de rekening op van de Vuelta. Dat begint met een diepe buiging voor Annemiek van Vleuten. Zij voltooide een huzarenstukje door na de Giro en de Tour ook de Vuelta te winnen bij de vrouwen. Michael Boogerd snapt wel waar haar dominantie vandaan komt: “Ze is gewoon een klasse apart. Als de weg bergop gaat kan niemand haar volgen." Het feest in Nederland, vanwege de zege van Van Vleuten verbleekt bij  dat van de zuiderburen. De Belgen hebben met Remco Evenepoel voor het eerst in 44 jaar een winnaar van een grote ronde. Al voor zijn eerste zege, kreeg hij de bijnaam 'de nieuwe Merckx'. Gaat hij die belofte nu inlossen?  “Dat weet alleen de toekomst', zegt Mart Smeets die wel onder indruk is van de het rijden van Evenepoel: "Hij kon alle aanvallen pareren, reed een ijzersterke tijdrit en lette goed op in het begin. Hij reed zo lang in het rood dat je zou vergeten in welk shirt hij normaal rijdt.” Wel was het een saaie Vuelta. “Het ontbrak aan strijd.”, zegt Joost Vullings. Mart is het daarmee eens en voegt eraan toe dat je Evenepoel niet mag verwijten dat hij te sterk was. “ Maxim Horssels van Wielerflits denkt dat het ondanks het saaie koersverloop uiteindelijk toch een historische Vuelta was, waarin niet alleen Evenepoel doorbrak, maar ook andere jonge renners zich nadrukkelijk presterenteerden. Zo is de nummer drie in het klassement Juan Ayuso pas 19, liet de 22 jarige Thymen Arensman zich goed zien met een zesde plek in het eindklassement en een overwinning in de Koninginnerit. “Over tien jaar gaan we een aantal van deze jonge gasten nog in de toptien van grote rondes zien. Wat dat betreft was het een blik in de toekomst."

Women's sport is celebrating not just in the UK but around the world as football fans watched England defeat Germany 2-1 after extra-time at Wembley Stadium to capture the European Championship this past weekend. The scenes at the North London venue were unprecedented in women's football with a crowd of 87,192 creating an atmosphere like no other. The chants of ‘football's coming home' echoed far and wide as Sarina Weigman's team did what so few teams have historically been able to in this tournament—they beat eight-time champions Germany. That the game went to extra-time only underscored the Lionesses resilient form that they showed all tournament and served to reinforce the remarkable leadership that is Sarina Weigman. She has empowered her team like no other manager in England's history and led the team to a European victory, just as she did with her native Dutch team in 2017. The tournament attendance topped 574,875 (In The Netherlands in 2017 it was 240,055) and the UK TV audience reached 17.4 million ( the 2019 Women's World Cup was 11.7 million). Stage 7 of the Le Tour De France Femmes Avec Zwift saw Annemiek van Vleuten blow the race apart with a majestic display from Selestat to Le Markstein, destroying the opposition and taking the yellow jersey into the bargain. Hannah Walker and @liahervey preview Stage 8, the final stage of this year's Tour which goes between Lure and La Super Planche des Belles Filles. It's a massive final day and comes down to the final climb as Belles Filles is a monster and comes after seven tough days in the saddle so fatigue will be high. Along with @annemiekvanvleuten we hear from @mavi_garvi_c about her condition, along with her team-mate @ericamagnaldi  The Liv sponsored white jersey also changed hands once again as @shirinvananrooij from Trek Segefredo now wears it on the final stage. The Giro Donne is done and dusted and there are some key takeaways we discuss ahead of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift. Annemiek van Vleuten will be hard to beat, but it is possible. So the 2022 spring classics are behind us and it's almost time to welcome this season's Giro d'Italia, but before we do that, OJ Borg, Jeremy Whittle and Peter Cossins chat through a dramatic and compelling Liège-Bastogne-Liège weekend, in which one young talent — Remco Evenepoel — came of age, and another, of a different vintage — Annemiek van Vleuten — showed her durability and resilience. They also look back over the peaks and troughs of a thrilling March and April, from the Poggio to the Arenberg, the Kemmelberg to La Redoute, discussing the capi and the cobbles, the bergs and the bravado, and identifying the winners and losers (and the missing in action) from cycling's greatest one-day races...

Tadej Pogačar raced the Tour de Flanders for the first time Sunday, and he wasn't just perusing the event as a tourist - the two-time Tour champ rode to win. And while he didn't pull off the victory, he absolutely did force every rider in the field to play on his terms until the final meters. In the women's race, defending champ Annemiek van Vleuten rode similarly in many ways to Pogačar — defining the race, chasing down the break, and forcing the critical selection.
