For today's show I set about trying to answer the questions: "How do you keep training fun but also focused without racing? And is it still possible to progress as athletes through all of this?" To find those answers, I spoke with Ruth Winder, a professional cyclist for Trek-Segafredo’s women's team. She is the current American National Pro Road Champion, and earlier this year, she clinched an impressive overall win at the Santos Tour Down Under. We explore a lot during this hour, including how she has handled the unknown of racing; how she has altered her training; that she is open to doing a bake-off with fellow American Robin Carpenter; what interval she hates the most, and how sometimes, simply being home can help you reset. After 22 years at the helm of what has become Australia’s greatest cycling race, the Santos Tour Down Under (TDU), Mike Turtur – Olympic Games' and Commonwealth Games' gold medallist, TDU founder and director, hands the reins to Stuart O’Grady at the end of the 2020 race. Career changes are a time for looking forward, as well as reflecting on past achievements and challenges. In this episode, Mike opens up about what ignited his lifelong passion for cycling, pushing through pain barriers to win Olympic gold, a nail-biting negotiation with a top German sprinter that potentially saved the TDU from being derailed after year one - and, of course, what comes next.

Welcome back from the holidays! The VeloNews Podcast returns with the first episode of 2020, and there is plenty to discuss. Andrew Hood and Fred Dreier jump into three major storylines from these early days of the decade. The dangerous wildfires in Australia have not yet threatened the Santos Tour Down Under, but major endurance events are often cancelled in the wake of tragedy and natural disasters. Fred and Andy discuss the upcoming race, and whether or not the fires will force organizers to cancel it. The U.S. gravel cycling scene is already generating headlines, as more pro road riders jump into off-road cycling. As it turns out, these riders are changing the business model of pro cycling in America by attracting personal sponsors that may have otherwise gone to a pro team or race. How could this shift change the American cycling landscape? Chris Froome is back in the news, as stories circulated that he left a Team Ineos training camp in early December. Were these stories accurate or overblown? Then, we have an interview with domestic road pro TJ Eisenhart, who is leaving the road behind to launch his own gravel racing team. Eisenhart explains why he's heading to gravel racing and delves into his own personal setbacks in road cycling. Plus, he explains why his gravel team supports a new business model. All that and more on this week's episode of The VeloNews Podcast.

We're baaaaacck! Well, okay, we came back a week ago, but now, we’re officially back. Back in the Cycling Central studio at SBS HQ, that is. The mic’s have been cleaned out, the mic socks replaced (Tomo’s spitting, inevitably, got the better of them), the chairs reupholstered, the table re-lacquered, our Gustavo Fring lookalike, a.k.a. studio producer Dennis, has returned – unlike Fring, who died at the meth-laden hands of Walter White – but the regulars remain! Hosted by our in-house hipster Alex Hinds and accompanied by Cycling Central managing editor Phil Gomes and King (or should that be queen?) of Willunga Hill, Anthony Tan, the trio first get stuck into the Santos Tour Down Under, and reminisce and ruminate on a cracking start to the 2014 WorldTour calendar. Running concurrently with the TDU was the Tour de San Luis. Shambolic and uncivilized at times, superlative at others; should we have expected anything less? Adelaide may resemble a ghost town after the TDU peloton departed – but did you know the Australian track nationals are on this week at the Adelaide Super-Drome, and Wednesday night, golden girl Anna Meares clocked up her thirtieth national title?! And, further afield – okay, okay, *miles* away – in Hoogerheide, the Netherlands, the world’s best cyclo-crossers get down and dirty this weekend to fight for a bunch of rainbow jerseys. First person to stay upright and not break bike or bone wins… Or something like that. Hear us out now, yo!
