In the last episode we investigated the ‘high carb trend' - taking in very large amounts of carbohydrate (>100g/hr) during exercise.  In this episode we speak to Aussie pro cyclist Jack Haig to get an athlete's perspective. Jack's professional career to date spans both sides of this high carb trend with almost perfectly symmetry, and so he has a great insight on how this approach took hold in the pro peloton, how it's changed the sport, and how he achieves such high intakes from a practical perspective.   Podcast Guest: Jack Haig - Bahrain Victorious Pro Cycling Team Jack's Podcast - The Rest Day with Jack Haig (Escape Collective) Instagram: @jack_haig   Rice Krispies bar recipes mentioned: A range of recipes for Rice Krispies bars and other on-the-bike goodies from Pock-It Fuel (Lizzie Holden & Nick Shultz) - Instagram: @pockitfuel   Fuelin: This episode is supported by Fuelin, the world's first training-based nutrition app. It syncs with your training plan (in TrainingPeaks, Final Surge, and TriDot or Run Dot) and creates a personalised nutrition plan, built around your training schedule and tailored to your goals. This episode is supported by our friends at MAAP. I've been loving doing the Top Sixes on this show lately, but this week I thought it would be fun to go back to the old-school style of Talking Luft! So this week it's back to the rapid-fire questions, having some fun and putting our guest under a bit of pressure while we work out what their cycling style is all about. We were lucky again to have grabbed Aussie star Jack Haig for this one. You will know by now that he loves a top ten in a ridiculously hard stage race, but at Talking Luft we wanted to get the really important stuff out of him: how does he wear his cassette? What is his all-time favourite kit? Who does he think is the most stylish rider? (Of course, he just went for a tall redhead!) Talking Luft is always great fun to record and listening to this reminds me why I love making these episodes so much. Aside from the important questions on style, I also got to hit him up about some of the things that he loves and hates in the races; turns out he's not a fan of echelons in the neutral… And we also got to share a great war story of his hardest day on the bike - which incidentally I shared with him in a grupetto in Poland (what feels like) a long time ago! Anyway, I'll let you have a listen. It's a really fun little blast through a few of the things that I love about the sport with a great guest! The Life in the Peloton book is OUT NOW! Get your copy now exclusively at maap.cc! Can't wait for you to read it. Cheers, Mitch

Jack Haig is one of only a handful of Australian riders to have stood on a Grand Tour podium. An almost accidental pro who fell into a career on the road whilst surfing and mountain biking back in his home in Australia as a teenager, he has been a constant presence in the biggest stage races in the world since his breakthrough ride, winning the Queen stage of the 2017 Tour of Poland as a second-year pro.   While his consistency as a stage racer is pretty standout (he's been fifth at the Dauphiné three times, which is eye-opening when you know how bloody hard that thing is!) his story off the bike is just as - if not more, fascinating.   There can be a lot of pressure to conform in professional road cycling but there is something a little bit unique in a lot of pros, and the best ones are the ones who accept that part of their character and embrace it to be a better rider.  With Jack, it's been clear since the very early days (when we were teammates at Orica) that he was a rider who did things his own way and didn't feel the need to fit into what was expected.   I love getting behind the scenes with characters like Haigy here on the pod. These are the guys, the opinions, and the stories that make the peloton such a fascinating place, and prove that you can do things your own way off the bike whilst being hugely successful on it.    As well as the big results, Jack has dealt with some pretty serious setbacks too, crashing out of the Tour in 2021 when in the best form of his life. We talk about how he dealt with this and other setbacks, as well as what keeps him coming back to be in the mix in those super hard week-long stage races that he loves (watch out Dauphiné - he's currently lurking just outside the top ten of this years edition…)   It'll hopefully be a big European summer for Jack so chuck the pod on and get to know one of the peloton's true characters!   This episode is supported by our friends at HVNM. From the first week, some might even say the first stage time trial, Primož Roglič's third consecutive Vuelta a España win was never much in doubt. Even after crashing  once, he didn't lose any time. And he looked relaxed the entire race, allowing the jersey to fall to Odd Christian Eiking for an extended period mid-race, while patiently biding his time to take it back. In the end, the time gaps between Roglič and his closest rivals on the podium, Enric Mas and Jack Haig, reflected a stellar performance where he was in control right through the final time trial. On the final episode of the Aérogramme podcast with La Course en Tête from the 2021 Vuelta a España, there is a lot of action to recap from the final grand tour of the year—which some pros were calling the most difficult  of their career owing in large part to the unrelenting heat throughout the race. Plus, there are plenty of questions raised about the future of cycling.Beyond the GC race, the 2021 Vuelta had other memorable stories, including Fabio Jakobsen winning three stages and the green jersey after his horrific life-threatening crash last year. Or the long run of Eiking in the red jersey and the ascent of his Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert team. And several other riders like Jack Haig, who finished third overall, showed what they can do on a big stage. And there's a big question looming over the final weekend: what happened to cause Miguel Ángel López to abandon on the penultimate stage after losing contact with the main group? Has anything like this ever happened before? We also discuss whether the race outcome would have been the same if Roglič's compatriot and young phenom Tadej Pogačar were at the race. Four of the last six last grand tours have been won by one of the two Slovenians. How long will this domination last? It's also no secret that the Ineos Grenadiers have been less dominant as of late. The team's DS Olly Cookson provides insight into their tactics on stages 17 and 20. He describes a team that is approaching racing much differently than the Sky and Ineos incarnations of the past, taking more risks along the way.  And the crew at La Course en Tête provide their final assessments of the Vuelta: was it a good grand tour?Listen to the latest episode of Aérogramme for the full conversation!Aérogramme is presented by the Belgian Waffle Ride.

After the first rest day, nine days total of racing, the Vuelta appears to be a two-horse race between defending champion Primož Roglič and Movistar's Enric Mas. It may very well only be some piece of misfortune—a crash or illness—that can derail Roglič at this point. But ever since Alejandro Valverde crashed out earlier in the race, his teammates Enric Mas and Miguel Angel López have stepped up, playing off each other quite well along the way to stay right in the race. With a late-race TT looming, however, they'll need more than a few seconds to fend off Roglič and win their team's home grand tour. With plenty of stages still remaining, anything could happen, but which riders still have a realistic chance at wearing the red jersey after the final stage? These days, Roglič and Tadej Pogačar appear to be a given to win a grand tour if they're on the  start line. But with racing shifting to a state of less control by a single team, there are opportunities for individuals and other teams. We discuss the chances of the top riders in GC, including Adam Yates, Egan Bernal, Jack Haig, López, Mas and of course Roglič. Could Australian rider Jack Haig be a sleeper choice to win the race? Sophie Smith weighs in on her compatriot. Additionally, we touch on the state of Ineos Grenadiers as a grand tour powerhouse after the team has once again gone in with multiple potential contenders but are now just hoping to get on the podium. There appear to be plenty of promising young riders coming up the ranks, but the top end riders have been falling flat despite their talent. Are expectations just too inflated after an extremely dominant decade? Listen to the episode for the full discussion and be sure to tune in every week during the Vuelta!Aérogramme is presented by the Belgian Waffle Ride.

Richard Moore and Lionel Birnie dial up our man in Spain, Daniel Friebe, to discuss stage nine of the Vuelta a España, the final test in the mountains before the first rest day of the race. A couple of days ago we were hoping to learn more about the likely shape of the battle for the red jersey only for a number of riders to gain time in the break and muddy the picture at the top of the overall standings. Today we did get a sort out and with two weeks still to go the question for Movistar is, how do they crack Primoz Roglic? We discuss a thrilling stage, won by the Italian Damiano Caruso, whose Bahrain Victorious team was also celebrating the fact their rider Jack Haig moved up to fourth overall today. We hear from Caruso, Haig and their sports director Gorazd Stangelj too. We start with Mark Cavendish, who told reporters that Gent-Wevelgem could be his final race as pro rider. In emotional scenes, the British rider gave little else away but with his contract up and no confirmation of an extension at Bahrain McLaren could this be it for the sprinter who has won 30 stages of the Tour de France, Milan-San Remo, and many more races? Daniel Benson and Ed Pickering discuss the huge impact Cavendish has had on the sport, his major achievements, what he was like to interview, and how his personality and his fast finish went hand in hand. We also look back at the Giro d'Italia  - before the latest COVID-19 results were announced – and analyse the finish in the men's edition Gent-Wevelgem. Coming up in the next edition of the podcast we have an exclusive interview with Elisa Longo Borghini from Trek Segafredo and preview the Vuelta a Espana.
