Daniel Friebe and Lionel Birnie are back to examine the latest headlines and talking points from the world of pro cycling, this week aided by TNT commentator Rob Hatch. The Classics have migrated (slightly) south to the hills of Limburg and the Ardennes, with the Brabantse Pijl and Amstel Gold kicking off the final phase of the spring season last week. In the former, Remco Evenepoel completed a stunning return from injury to outsprint Wout Van Aert. Amstel saw an even more surprising denouement, with Mattias Skjelmose proving too quick - just - for Tadej Pogačar and Evenepoel. We ponder what this all means for the remainder of the Ardennes Classics, with a detour via Coorevits Corner. There's also a look back at the life and times of British cycling legend Barry Hoban. The hosts also discuss the idea of bringing as much water as possible to dump on the body during a hot race like Unbound. They touch on the concept of the NCL being similar to the Lifetime Grand Prix and the challenges faced by NCL riders now that the league has shut down. The conversation concludes with a lighthearted discussion about golf and the rules and attire associated with the sport. Scott discusses his recent charity ride and the Redlands race. The conversation then shifts to the performance of the Legion team and Scott's upcoming races. They also talk about the Amstel Gold race and the use of AI in training advice. The conversation revolves around the upcoming Sea Otter Classic mountain bike race and the decision to recon the start. The hosts discuss the course layout, potential bottlenecks, and the challenges of the race. They also speculate on their own performance and make predictions for their finishing positions. The conversation then shifts to the topic of rider safety at races and the differences between mountain bike and gravel races. They discuss the treacherous nature of some courses and the need for event organizers to prioritize safety. The hosts also touch on the topic of bike sponsorship and the decision to ride a mountain bike or a gravel bike for certain races. The NCL drama highlights the challenges faced by new cycling leagues and the difficulties in sustaining them. Dumping water on oneself during hot races can provide a significant boost in power output. The use of water cooling in races may have limitations and can potentially affect the body's natural cooling mechanisms. The conversation showcases the camaraderie and banter between the hosts, making for an entertaining and engaging discussion. The hosts also touch on the rules and attire associated with golf, providing a lighthearted and humorous end to the conversation. Scott had a successful charity ride and dominated the Redlands race. The Legion team's performance has declined compared to previous seasons. The Amstel Gold race was challenging and had a low finish rate due to the cold weather. AI is being used to provide training advice based on analyzing YouTube videos. Legal issues can arise in various situations, and having a legal team is important for protection. Predicting race outcomes can be challenging, especially when considering different types of riders and courses. Fantasy leagues can add excitement and engagement to sports events, but it's important to set boundaries and not bet real money. Personal experiences and preferences can influence race predictions and choices. The Sea Otter Classic is a popular bike race event that attracts both roadies and mountain bikers. Reconnaissance of the race course is important to familiarize oneself with the start and potential bottlenecks. Rider safety should be a priority for event organizers, especially in races with treacherous terrain. The decision to ride a mountain bike or a gravel bike depends on the course and personal preference. Bike sponsorship can involve multiple sponsors for different types of races. Planning and logistics are crucial for attending races and coordinating with teammates.   Sound Bites "Dumping water in yourself you're artificially inducing evaporative cooling." "The Denver Disruptors were part of the NCL, like they were owned by the NCL." "The Live Golf league is kind of the live golf of the golf world." "Dumping water on myself, it's like an instant 30 watt boost." "To get out of them paying the million dollar prize, they just canceled the fourth race." "Imagine if the NFL had two or maybe three teams and three, maybe four games." "It was an absolute domination." "We won four out of five stages." "They still have good riders, but they..." "It's why we got a legal team, bro. It's all good." "I mean, that's probably the main thing, dude. I feel like Scott could have easily got caught out there." "Like yeah, it was him and Wild Van Art and it was so close. It took like so long." "I'll probably just save it for race day and just wing it. Worked for me last year." "There's just not a great solution to have it not be a bottleneck at the start of the race." "I don't think he's breaking the top 35, personally."

As the dust settles on another cobbled Classics season - and some who made it to the Roubaix velodrome on Sunday are still wiping the grit and in one or two cases tears from their eyes -  Daniel Friebe and Lionel Birnie take a last look back at the Hell of the North in the company of former WorldTour pro and cobblestone connoisseur Mitch Docker. We hear Mitch's thoughts on another superlative performance by Mathieu van der Poel and also speak to a rider who was making his debut in the race on Sunday - INEOS Grenadiers' teen marvel Josh Tarling. After that, we take stock after another huge race that concluded last weekend - the Tour of the Basque Country - and look ahead to the second half of the Classics season, starting with Amstel Gold at the weekend.   The Cycling Podcast is supported by Supersapiens and Science in Sport. In this podcast Geoff & Gerry speak with Bart Bowen. There is a first for everything since Bart was interviewed being a passenger in his motor home, which worked out great! Bart was a professional cyclist from 1990 to 2000, he was most notably the National Road Champion in 1992 and 1997. He also won the Herald Sun Tour in 1992 and the Tour of Japan in 1997. Bowen participated six times at the World Road Championships with the American team. Bart has been running his coaching and cycling studio business for over 15 years now.We talked about how Bart got started with cycling during college and being an elite skier at first. It was very interesting to hear all about starting at the Subaru-Montgomery team and the impact Eddie B had. Bart's first professional race was on the biggest stage imaginable; the 1990 World Championship in Utsunomiya, Japan. Bart explain how that came about and the contribution he had supporting Greg Lemond who came in 4th that year. Bart did a lot of racing in Europe and explains what it was like to spent and extended period over there during the spring classics time and what it was like to race monuments like: Milan- San Remo, Amstel Gold race and Paris-Roubaix.Cyclocross had a substantial place in Barts career and it was great to learn how his cyclocross skills contributed to his road racing, racing with and against the McCormick brothers and also doing a couple of cyclocross races in Europe.Today Bart run's a cycling studio from which he coaches and trains many cyclists. We touch on Zwift and the possibilities it gave Bart to keep on coaching during COVID and the lockdown, and how Zwift made him expand his reach across the globe organizing structured training rides. All in all this was a fun and very informational podcast, we hope you enjoy the listen and would love to get your feedback!

Carlton explains why the Dutch Classic can be one of the most exciting days of racing on the calendar. Plus: heated cycle lanes, the world's greatest bubble and squeak, a thumbs-up for speed skating, a thumbs-down for virtual racing, a story about a sausage and a seal... and much else besides. The three discuss Mathieu van der Poel's incredible Amstel Gold victory — one of the most amazing finishes we've ever seen — and Kasia Niewiadoma's daring attack, then look ahead to Fleche Wallonne.  In this week's Nerd Alert, James chats with a tubeless rim manufacturer that isn't happy with the new tubeless "standard."

Curt once again has better things to do than discuss cycling, but Tyler and Chris do their best covering the World Tour and NorCal races – and apparently this breaks Tyler’s heart – literally.  Are we blaming Curt for Tyler’s health problems?  Perhaps.  With the World Tour races, we discuss Amstel Gold, Fleche’ Wallonne, Tro Bro Leon, Tour of the Alps and a short preview of LBL (Liege-Bastogne-Liege).  With the NorCal races we recap the Winchester Circuit Race, Auburn Crit, Kingsburg Crit and Visalia Crit.  We also discuss an inquiry from the Auburn Crit promoter/director on whether stacking these two events (Winchester/Auburn) is too difficult and calendar competition as well.  We go over our winners and losers on the NorCal and World Tour scene and of course a short discussion on Lance and his settlement with the US Government and Floyd Landis.  Lastly we break some news regarding the Tour of California and the B2W_Podcast's plans for covering the race.  Also, hate mail has come to the the podcast.  We look forward to your love and hate mail as well.   Subscribe to our Between 2 Wheels Podcast YouTube Channel.  This Episode is sponsored by HealthIQ.  To learn more and support the show, visit www.healthiq.com/btwGive us a rating and comment on iTunes, Stitcher, Overcast.fm, GooglePay or Podbean and now also on TuneinSubscribe on Android Follow and share us on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/between2wheels/Find us on twitter @b2w_podcast or Email: admin@between2wheels.comWebsite: www.between2wheels.com

Ruminating Roubaix, Portents from País Vasco, Cycle of Safety, A Golden Amstel? They are down, but not out. Al Hinds and Anthony Tan are not in showroom condition (are they ever?), but that does not stop them from joining Phil Gomes – who finally has an excuse not to go near them – in this week’s Cycling Central podcast. The trio begin with ruminating over an edge-of-your-seat Paris-Roubaix last Sunday. Did Terpstra get lucky; was Vanmarcke the strongest but not the smartest; could Wiggo have won; was Cancellara off his A-game… What can their fine minds extract from the cobbles with the benefit of hindsight? He tonked ‘em in Tirreno, Contador proceeded to do the same in País Vasco. But the Basque Country tour was also notable for riders like Kwiatkowski, Valverde and Wout Poels who are looking good for a shot at Amstel Gold this Sunday, and the steady return to form of Cadel Evans, the Giro d’Italia partenza now just a fortnight away. The war between cyclists and motorists made the mainstream this week with a report on the ABC’s 730 program that focused on casualties of the road – and unsurprisingly, they were not the ones on four wheels. We get on the line with Fairfax journalist and author of the popular ‘On your bike’ blog Michael O’Reilly to discuss its impact. To cap off proceedings, we preview The Netherlands’ most prestigious bike battle, the Amstel Gold Race, on this Sunday and broadcast LIVE on SBS ONE. The bar has been raised (and being Amstel Gold, the bar is also open) and there are appears to be more potential protagonists than ever this Spring; Hinds, Tan and Gomes go crystal ball gazing to pick a winner that will probably end up losing.
