On todays Zero Limits Podcast I chat with Scotty Mac former signals operator from 126 Signals Squadron that supports the 2nd Commando Regiment.Scott enlisted into the Australian Defence Force in 2006 first enlisting as infantry soldier during basic training at Kapooka he transferred to Signals Corps. After completing basic and initial employment training Scott had the desire to post to a unit that supports special forces and with hard work he was posted to 126 Signals Squadron which supports the at the time 4RAR soon to be renamed 2nd Commando Regiment Australian Special Forces on the East coast of Australia.Scott deployed on two SOTG rotations supporting 2CDO on operations in Afghanistan in Romeo Platoon Bravo Company and with November Platoon Alpha Company. During his deployments Scott encountered multiple life changing scenarios including calling in a medevac for KIA Brett Till, WIA Damien Thomlinson and the when Scott Smith was killed by an IED.In recent years November platoon was falsely portrayed and defamed in the media more specifically by the ABC network portraying that the platoon was involved in war crimes also most recently altering gun shots of a clip with Heston Russell and Scott the soldier that fired his weapon in a helo during a 2CDO task. The ABC lost the defamation case against the platoon commander Heston Russell and the ABC denied actions of editing audio and suggested it was an editing error. www.3zeroscoffee.com.auInstargram @3zeroscoffee Discount Code 3ZLimits Website - www.zerolimitspodcast.comInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/zero.limits.podcast/?hl=enHost - Matty Morris www.instagram.com/matty.m.morrisSponsorsGatorz Australia - www.gatorzaustralia.com15% Discount Code - ZERO15(former/current military & first responders 20% discount to order please email orders@gatorzaustralia.com.auGetSome Jocko Fuel - www.getsome.com.au10 % Discount Code - ZEROLIMITS
Heston Russell has lived a life most of us couldn’t imagine. A former special forces commander, he’s been shot at, dropped out of helicopters, and led troops through the chaos of Afghanistan and Iraq. But it wasn’t until he came home that he faced his toughest fight yet — not against an enemy overseas, but against his own country. Heston and his men were accused of war crimes, and suddenly, he was battling to defend their names against the weight of national headlines and public judgment. In this episode, we dive into Heston’s intense defamation case against the ABC, but we go deeper, too, into what it’s like to be a soldier at war and what you do when you’re wrongly accused of a crime you didn’t commit. A 5th generation military man called by a purpose to serve our country, Commando Heston Russell put his life on the line in 5 tours of Iraq & Afghanistan. His calling to serve & willingness to sacrifice his life on the front line, filled him with pride until our country turned their back on him. Branding Heston a war criminal, the ABC released doctored footage and accused Heston of committing a war crime. Proving he wasn't even in the country at the time of the incident & that the footage had been manipulated, Heston was not only cleared of the accusations but he also won a landmark defamation case in the Federal Court against the ABC. Throughout this process, the politicians who had formerly called on Heston for his expertise did not answer his calls for assistance & the Australian Defence Force did not reach out to even check in on him once. Heston was abandoned by the people he served whilst in the fight of his life. However, now on the other side of a more tumultuous time, I was privileged to share this incredible conversation with him. There are a few things I admire about Heston. Of course, his service to our great country is one of them, but at the core of this incredible man is one of the most powerful stories & unique personalities I have had on the show. Here is what to expect for our chat:- Crushing all stereo types, Heston now openly speaks about his sexuality as a gay man - one of the very few who have walked his path in life to do so. - He shares some absolutely hilarious stories in the conversation that had me in stitches. The more wholesome message though is the importance of embracing who you truly are to live a fulfilled life & reconnect with your purpose in life.- We break down & discuss the mindset & character required to be a high performer in the special forces.- Heston intimately shares the words he wrote in death notes to family & friends before heading off on his most dangerous deployments. He believes that this is one of the most powerful exercises you can do to find inner peace & channel high performance.- We speak about leadership & why it seems to be lacking in Australian politics.- All of this & so much more in one of my all time favourite episodes of the show.Follow Heston & I on socials @bradleyjdryburgh @hestonrussellGo to https://hestonrussell.com/book for his incredible book! @HestonRussell on YouTube. If you enjoyed this episode, subscribe to the channel so that I can continue to interview the best guests from around the world & share the most entertaining & insightful conversations with you.Big love,Brad xx Hosted on Acast. Heston Russell's career had to be private. As a special forces soldier, few could know what he was doing and where he was going. But that all changed when he found his platoon leading the media headlines. The ABC published reports saying the platoon he led had been involved in shooting and killing unarmed Afghan civilians, breaking the rules of war. Heston sued the ABC for defamation. Here, Heston chats about growing up in Brisbane, his 16 years in the military, and building a values-based life.
In this episode of The Impostor Podcast, Burso is back on the couch with the absolute madman himself — Sam Wride — a former soldier turned armored brawler, fitness coach, Warhammer nerd, and part-time Twitch goblin. What starts as a messy chat about cake, clapping, and dodgy audio syncs quickly spirals into a full-blown ride through Sam's chaotic content creator life. He's hurt his ankle (again), but instead of resting like a normal person, he's throwing on some armor, launching a Twitch channel, and screaming at his mate Josh during Warhammer matches like it's the World Cup.“The ruler never lies,” Sam says — just before accusing Josh of cheating live on stream.Spoiler: Twitch chat was the judge. It got heated. We talk losing 7,000 followers, why being funny on Instagram doesn't pay, and why TikTok is just a flashy portfolio for sponsors who'll never pay you in cash, but might send you a t-shirt. Sam's building a bunch of YouTube channels: BooHurt fighting, tactical shooting, camping, and a Warhammer one “so nerdy it might cause shrinkage.”There's also a potential TV gig in the pipeline (“rhymes with Little Sister”), a chat about whether Heston Russell is the most elite bloke on earth, and the realization that commentating on medieval sport in full kit is the real dream job.Other gems include:Sam's $11-a-week fitness program that helps Buhurt warriors, future soldiers, and probably a few broken tradies. The idea of filming a two-man podcast in an ice bath (“Kevin Hart did it, we can do it. Just need to squish in.”)Burso accidentally riding an unregistered bike for 3 years — until a mate dobbed him in mid-ride.Discovering a new Australian combat sport that literally allows headbutts and chokes, but bans sucker punches. Heston Russell has been through some horrible sh*t; physical, mental, emotional, personal and professional. Some of it he was highly trained for, some of it he wasn't. Some of it he chose, some of it he didn't. And while you might think his biggest challenges would have been as a Special Forces Officer in the middle of combat situations around the world, the reality is different. If you haven't watched the Channel 7 'Spotlight' doco that unpacks Heston's fascinating (and harrowing) journey to hell and back, I strongly suggest you do. I thought I'd share the channel 7 synopsis here because they did a great job. **With a proud lineage of military relatives, Heston Russell enlisted in the army at 17 and rose through the ranks to become a highly decorated officer with more than 10,000 hours of leadership in combat operations, including four combat deployments to Afghanistan and a fifth to Iraq to fight against ISIS. He proved fearless in battle, iron-willed in his personal convictions and prepared to put it all on the line. As a soldier, Russell led our troops into countless battles and when he retired, he kept fighting. He campaigned for the royal commission into veteran suicide, built charities for soldiers and even ran for a seat in the Queensland senate. But his toughest fight came several years after his discharge, when Russell became the target of a relentless attack launched by the investigations unit of the ABC alleging that he was the worst kind of soldier - leaving a trail of destruction in Afghanistan and involved in fraudulent behaviour back home. Russell's battleground this time: the Australian Federal Court, where he spent almost three years fending off the ABC's allegations of war crimes.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
“Because you've come from an institution where you're meant to put yourself last, to ask for help is seen as a bit of a failure”In this episode you'll meet Special Forces Veteran Heston Russell. Heston grew up in suburban Brisbane as the middle child, with a Dad who was in the army, and an aerobics instructor mum. Like his Dad, he joined the army too - but when he was a kid, he loved heading to work with his mum at the aerobics classes she taught. Food in the household was healthy and nutritious, chocolate and sweets were never to be seen. This of course led him on a path the the corner store where he'd devour killer pythons and frogs. But life since high school hasn't been all sweetness and lollipops. In fact, it's been far from. During his time in the army, Heston served four combat operational deployments to Afghanistan and the Middle East, multiple counter-terrorism operations, a year in the US Special Ops command, and much more. Last year he won a defamation case against the ABC linking him to war-crimes in Afghanistan. Hear Heston talk about the challenges he and other veterans face once leaving the armed forces, how it took him until almost 30 to finally realise who he was as a person, and how he feels more accepted in America as a veteran than back home here in Australia. These days Heston invests his time in Veteran causes and the Veteran Games, an opportunity for Australian Veterans to showcase physical resilience, teamwork, and problem-solving in competition. “As people we are all capable of so much more than we imagine ourselves to be” - Katherine Bennell-PeggIn this episode you meet Australia's first ever astronaut. Katherine Bennell-Pegg grew up looking at the stars in her suburban Sydney backyard, and by early high school when asked by a teacher to write down three professions she'd like to pursue as an adult she wrote just one. Unlike those of us who still don't know what we want to be, she set her sights on the stars and achieved what few dare to dream. Listen in to hear what it takes to become a qualified astronaut, why being able to understand Привет, как дела? is important, how space food is better than you'd expect, why all astronauts are medical test subjects, and how big aspirations are so important for young kids. On the menu are Fantales, chip butties, and marshmallows. It's a sweet and super-inspiring episode. Katherine's social cause is diversity in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) because “unless we have diverse thought and creativity we can't solve the problems of tomorrow”.Katherine serves forth duckweed, from the Plants4Space team to our next guest Heston Russell. Heston Russell is a retired Special Forces Major and decorated combat Veteran who has dedicated his life to serving his country and the wider Veteran community. He joined the Australian Army at the age of 17 as a fifth generation Army Veteran following in the footsteps of his father Mark who served for over twenty years in the Australian Army. While at the Australian Defence Force Academy, Heston completed a Bachelor of Arts from the University of New South Wales majoring in History & Indonesian. After 16 years of serving in the military - where he lead elite, high performance teams and completed over 100 combat missions with the Special Forces - he found his true purpose defending and protecting those who were innocent. And taking the fight to those who were not. Transitioning back to civilian life was challenging to say the least. In August 2020, feeling irrelevant and isolated, he almost gave up on life. In that harrowing moment, he realised the person truly holding him back was himself. Since then, he's been on a mission to use his experience as a leader and his love for his country to solve real world problems and empower people to achieve their full potential. In this episode, Heston shares his reflections, thoughts and views on military life, on transitioning back into civilian life and what he's learnt through the rollercoaster journey. It's my pleasure to introduce you all to Heston Russell, a man on a mission now to use his expert problem solving skills in the service of others , and bring about balance , perspective and responsibility into Australian society and culture, now and into the future. To action this, Heston has entered politics, supporting and improving Australian culture and bring back that National Spirit. In the middle of this endeavour, the ABC ( Australian government media) picked a fight with him and has been of late, incredibly underhanded. Amidst false allegations to himself and the soldiers he led in battle, the experience of coming out as homosexual after many years denying his natural sexuality and facing competitive rather than collaborative veteran charity organisations, he remains positive, and altruistic in his political motivations. Heston has seen true evil in his wartime experiences, from fighting ISIS in Iraq and he speaks about the horror that the media simply does not report, that we as a public who sends our children to battle, should rightly know. Heston Russell spent 16 years in the military and over 100 combat missions within the special forces. He's seen and experienced a LOT of things but nothing had prepared him for returning to civilian life. Nothing prepared him for a sudden perceived loss of purpose and identity and nothing prepared him for experiencing suicidal ideation. Heston is a deep thinker, a great communicator and offers up some incredibly insightful perspectives around special forces, sexuality, suicide. Heston Russell is a Retired Special Forces Major, who after 16 years in the military and over 100 combat missions serving within the Special Forces, found his way to TYP Central for a chat and it (the conversation) was a revelation, inspiration and in some ways, not what I expected at all. I thought it would be good but it was brilliant. He was brilliant. We chatted about the mindset, morality and ethics around killing people when it's part of your job (weird, I know), performing under the ultimate pressure (someone shooting at you), returning to ‘normal life' after combat and some fascinating stuff that I don't want to share in this overview because it will ruin the listening moment. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

There was a rare victory for people power pushback in Victoria with the Shrine of Remembrance CEO Dean Lee canceling plans yesterday to light up the shrine in rainbow flag colors which he said was to honor LGBTIQ+ veterans. Lee who has never served himself claimed the cancellation was due to ‘threats' and ‘abuse' against Shrine staff. RSL Victoria which was not consulted over the rainbow lights, its President Robert Webster said that a ‘threat' he received was that 10,000 veterans would march on the shrine to stop the rainbow lights. The Shrine did still raise the corrupted rainbow flag which has black and poo brown stripes. Voice of a Veteran Founder and SAS war veteran Heston Russell summed it up perfectly that the shrine is to honor Australian military service and sacrifice and not about the individual identities of the people to sign up to defend and serve Australia. Despite the shrine backlash, the Andrews Government is funding more LGBTIQ+ events with Equality Minister Harriet Shing announcing $220k of taxpayers' money for new grants. Anthony Albanese unveiled the wording of the question he proposes to put to the Australian people at a referendum to enshrine an Aboriginal and Torress Straight Islander Voice to Parliament at the Garma festival. While the Coalition's Shadow Indigenous Affairs Minister Julian Leeser supports the voice new Indigniuous Senator Jacinta Price's slammed the lack of detail about how the voice will actually operate and that process is being led by Indigenous elites. Greens Senator for Victoria Lidia Thorpe called the Queen a colonizer when she was taking her oath of office. She was instructed by Senate President Sue Lines to take the oath as it is printed, which Thorpe did after her stunt so she would be officially a Senator and therefore receive her 200k+ salary from the taxpayer. Today I sat with my mate Heston Russell who is a former Special Forces Commander who toured Afghanistan and Iraq and is now heading his own political party - The Australian Values party. In this chat I learned a lot about our political system, why it's important we vote for the smaller parties and the biggest thing for me personally was all about understanding our values as people, as teams, as organisations and even as a nation. Heston Russell is a retired Commando from the Australian Defence Force active in mental health and veteran charities. After many political parties approached Heston to run on their brand, he decided to form the Australian Values Party and build a long term cultural change to the way Australia understands political leadership. As a leadership expert, author, speaker and practitioner in the ADF, Heston believes Australians politicians are not displaying the qualities of leadership but it doesn't have to be this way. In this discussion we covered the political landscape of the Australian federal election, but also dived into what really makes a leader, and why we should demand such leaders in politics and in society more broadly. Heston Russell, Australian Values Party founder and senate candidate, has agreed to a LIVE interview tonight, after I shared a video of his answer to a question about Israel Folau's freedom of speech which left me doubtful he considered religious liberty an Australian value. I also included the fact of blurred photos republished by the ABC which he had taken of himself naked, sold and distributed privately online. Running with the party name "values" attracts values voters, which Christians and conservatives often consider themselves. Was this a dark moment in a past now regretted, or something voters will be inadvertantly supporting in an ever relevant Culture War? I will ask Heston three direct questions values voters need to know based on his comments about Israel Folau & the fact that those photos were taken & distributed online by him. 1. Would you vote for laws to protect the religious liberty of Israel Folau? 2. Would you vote for laws to dismantle the anti discrimination industry? 3. Is the sale or distribution of sexually explicit media, publicly or privately, an Australian value? A larger, nuanced discussion will happen around those issues, but voters also need a reducible, uncomplicated indication of exactly what values a vote for the Australian Values Party will support.

Hello beautiful people On today's podcast we have the authentic leader, Heston Russell. Heston is a retired special forces veteran, founder of the charity Veteran Support Force and Leader of the Australian Values Party. What I personally love about this conversation is Heston's absolute power that he exudes through his mission in breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and vulnerability, and his passion in fighting for true and authentic values of leadership. Heston is a man that what you see, is indeed what you get. This conversation is one of the realist and most raw ones I have had to date. We discuss the impact of emotional compartmentalisation, suicidal ideation, sexuality, war crime accusations and smear campaigns. I truly honour Heston for the personal power he brings to this conversation. This podcast does have a trigger warning as we obviously cover mental health topics, so please be aware of this. If in need of support, please call Lifeline: 13 11 14.Please enjoy this important conversation with Heston Russell.#jennahlouise #tobehumanpodcast
Today, I spoke with Mark Willacy, the journalist behind the ABC report ‘Killing Field' as well as the recently published book ‘Rogue Forces: an explosive insiders' account of Australian SAS war crimes in Afghanistan'. Even though I stated that I will recommence publishing new episodes on the 21st of February 2022, I am releasing this one as a Special Release as I feel that the contemporary relevance of this conversation warrants it. As you will hear, some of the topics Mark and I covered include the intent behind his journalism, his initial exposure to war and conflict in the Middle East, how ‘Killing Field' and ‘Rogue Forces' came about, the people who approached him, impact of the environment on our soldiers, impunity of politicians and much more. On a personal note, this was by far the most difficult interview I have conducted because of the highly volatile and close-to-home subject. All I ask of my audience is that they take heed of my opening remarks before diving into the interview. This is an important topic that we need to talk about and do so respectfully. Lastly, you can see my recently published article that I mention here. --- Full show notes: My guest today is Mark Willacy. Mark has been a journalist for more than 25 years and has reported for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Australia's national broadcaster, from more than 30 countries. Mark is a seven-time Walkley Award winner and in 2020 he was awarded Australia's highest honour in journalism, the Gold Walkley, for exposing alleged Australian SAS war crimes in Afghanistan. His winning Four Corners report ‘Killing Field' made headlines around the world and sparked a federal-police war crimes investigation. Mark's investigations provided evidence for 12 cases named in the Brereton Report, the independent Australian Defence Force inquiry into war crimes in Afghanistan between 2005 and 2016. Earlier in his career, as the ABC's Middle East correspondent for four years, Mark also reported on the ground from the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the 2003 war in Iraq. He was also the Japan correspondent in 2011 when the country was hit by its most powerful earthquake in more than a thousand years. Mark has twice been named Queensland Journalist of the Year and in 2019 he won a Logie Award for his Four Corners' world exclusive on the Thai cave rescue. Mark has authored several books, including ‘The View From the Valley Of Hell' a book about his time in the Middle East in the early 2000s, ‘Fukushima', which is an account of the 2011 earthquake and the twin catastrophes of the subsequent tsunami and nuclear meltdown. And more recently, he published the book ‘Rogue Forces: an explosive insiders' account of Australian SAS war crimes in Afghanistan'. He joins me today to discuss this last book, how it came about and its impacts. Some of the topics we covered: Marks entry into investigative journalism His time in the Middle East in the early 2000s Motivation behind extreme violence in the Middle East Lessons learnt about human nature First encounters with the Australian SAS in Iraq How ‘Killing Field' and ‘Rogue Forces' came about Why Mark released the book when he did The sources of information for Mark's book Impact of the environment on our soldiers Impunity of politicians Current state of the media Narratives surrounding Mark's book Mark's response to Heston Russell's recent public complaint The way forward Lastly, you can see my recently published article that I mention here.

Heston Russell and I served together on a difficult mission in Afghanistan. I was a tank platoon commander and he was the commander of an Aussie commando platoon. We didn't know that fact until I asked him to be a guest on this podcast. Heston retired as a Major after 16 years in the military and over 100 combat missions serving within Aussie Special Forces. He's a fierce advocate for veterans, and finding better pathways from service to everyday life. Heston founded Voice of a Veteran (now Veteran Support Force) after his own experiences leaving the military and struggling through life after service. Years after our mission, I'm grateful to be able to connect with Heston and have this important and healing conversation, because these are the types of conversations we need to be having. Today I am extremely honoured to Switch the Sitch with retired special forces Major, Heston Russell. I first met Heston whilst hosting a regular segment on Bondi Radio, he and his partner had brought the Barry's Bootcamp franchise to Australia. Two years later I am honoured to have him co-host my podcast as he made the switch to help returned veterans assimilate back into society by starting the Voice of a Veteran Movement. Heston founded the Voice Of A Veteran movement in September 2020, as a platform for Veterans to speak out and be heard, and to take action to fix the system that should be projecting our patriotic heroes to greatness after service. He is a fierce advocate for Veterans and doing what is right. Which has led to the launch of the new charity organisation Veteran Support Force in July 2021 - to lead the way in proactive support for our community and engagement with the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide Having experienced those affected by veteran suicide personally this movement is close to my heart and addresses the need for change in society through passionate endeavours. Michael is joined by Heston Russell, Retired Special Forces Major & founder of ‘Voice Of A Veteran', to discuss his latest Daily Telegraph opinion piece where he examines the recent announcement that the last of Australia's military personnel have been withdrawn from Afghanistan. Mr Russell writes, ‘They leave a conflict that involved more than 39,000 Australian servicemen and support deployed over the 20 years our country committed to the coalition against terrorism.' ‘During the conflict, 41 Australian veterans lost their lives, with more than 700 more lost to suicide during the same period. The true cost of our deployment continues to be realised.' ‘Since then, however, much like our political strategy in the conflict, we have heard silence except for commemorating those who paid the ultimate sacrifice, or those who won the highest awards our country can offer.' ‘What we have not heard is of the true commitment and success of our soldiers, sailors, airmen and women who, for two desperately challenging decades, represented our country to the finest of our national values.' 2nd Commando Regiment veterans, friends and family share their memories of the late Sergeant Brett Wood MG, DSM. Life on the Line tracks down Australian military veterans and records their stories. Brett Wood joined the Australian Army in 1996. He completed Selection and joined 4 RAR (Commando) in November 1998, which later became the 2nd Commando Regiment. Brett deployed to Malaysia in 1996, Bougainville in 2000, Timor in 2001, Iraq in 2003 and Afghanistan in 2006. During that deployment, for his leadership in action as a team commander, he was awarded the Medal for Gallantry. He received a Commendation for service with the Tactical Assault Group - East in 2007. He deployed again to Afghanistan in 2009 and 2011. Brett was tragically killed in action by an Improvised Explosive Device on 23 May 2011. As the 10-year anniversary of Brett’s passing approached, Life on the Line was asked by one of Brett's close friends and fellow commandos to commemorate the day. We have done so by creating this special podcast, a celebration of his life. Alex Lloyd spoke with family, friends and colleagues of Brett - from those who knew him personally to those who served alongside him and marvelled at his professionalism. This podcast shares just a few of many great stories about Brett Wood.
