++NOTE - Rob refers to Jim Chalmers during the Salute and a Slap segment, when it is actually Richard Marles. Rob will give himself a good slap over that one! ********** Australian Survivor axed? | Ben Roberts-Smith media circus | Logies reform | Karl's salute and slap | ABC diversity spin Rob McKnight breaks down the week's biggest Australian media stories — including an exclusive on the future of Australian Survivor, the media coverage surrounding the arrest of Ben Roberts-Smith, a new nomination process for the Gold Logie, a measured look at Karl Stefanovic's interview highs and lows, and the real story behind the ABC's decision to end its diversity group partnerships. Australian Survivor's days may be numbered. As exclusively reported by TV Blackbox, Channel 10 has scrapped plans for a back-to-back two-season shoot, with only one season now going ahead. Rob reveals the axing of host Jonathan LaPaglia had less to do with salary than a long-running clash with Endemol Shine executive Amelia Fisk — and explains why all signs are pointing to the return of Australian Ninja Warrior as a replacement. The Ben Roberts-Smith arrest and the media circus around it. Critics were quick to condemn the camera crew at the airport — but as Rob explains, that footage came from the Office of the Special Investigator, not a news outlet. Rob also reflects on his McKnight Tonight interview with combat veteran Heston Russell, which had generated 56,000 views and over 1,100 comments at time of recording, and what the reaction tells us about public trust in the media. The ABC, diversity partnerships, and the misinformation spreading online. The ABC ended its paid memberships with Pride in Diversity, the Australian Disability Network, and the Diversity Council of Australia — but it is not abandoning diversity and inclusion programs. Rob cuts through the spin from both sides, including the Media Watch history that many viral videos are conveniently ignoring. Logies reform: a step in the right direction. TV Week can now put forward nominees for the Gold Logie and Hall of Fame — and Rob, a Logies judge himself, explains why this is a welcome change, and has some pointed advice for presenters submitting their reels. A Salute and a Slap for Karl Stefanovic. The Karl Stefanovic Show has changed Australian podcasting. The production values are high, the interviews are compelling, and Rob genuinely can't wait to see what comes next. But in the same breath — that Jim Chalmers interview on Today nearly had it all, until Karl tried to land a last-minute hit and move on without letting the Treasurer respond. Australian Survivor back-to-back shoot scrapped — and what's coming next The real reason Jonathan LaPaglia was axed from Survivor Ben Roberts-Smith arrest footage — who actually shot it? This week I sit down with someone whose life has been defined by service, sacrifice, and an unshakeable sense of responsibility - former Special Forces Major, Heston Russell. In this conversation, we go far beyond the uniform. We talk about the realities of war, the loss and trauma that stays with you long after you return home, and the moment overseas that changed Heston forever. We dive into leadership and character, what it really means to carry the weight of other people's lives, and how identity can be built - and broken - through service.Heston opens up about the battles no one sees, the scrutiny and pressure that came with the ABC lawsuit, and the challenge of rebuilding purpose once the military chapter ends. We explore mental health, healing, and finding a way back to yourself when the world gets loud. This isn't just a conversation about the military - it's a conversation about being human. About loss, responsibility, courage, and the work it takes to truly know who you are outside of the roles you've lived in.It was a genuine honour to sit across from Heston. His honesty, his integrity, and his willingness to go there make this one of the most powerful episodes I've ever recorded. This episode is brought to you by True Protein. In this episode of the Defence Connect Podcast, senior journalist Robert Dougherty is joined by returning guest Heston Russell – a public speaker, author and former Australian Special Forces officer – to discuss the 2025 Veteran Games and the recent grand finals held on the Gold Coast (11 and 12 October). Russell has previously served in 2nd Commando Regiment as a commando platoon commander, was deployed to four combat operational deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq, served in Iraq as a Special Operations joint lead planner within the Special Operations Joint Task Force and completed a year-long exchange within the United States Special Operations Command. He holds a bachelor of arts from UNSW Sydney, majoring in history and Indonesian. The pair discuss a range of issues, including: The finale of the 2025 Veteran Games Grand Finals in Queensland, course obstacles and the triumph of winning team Brisbane Veterans Rugby League Football Club. The newly signed defence agreement between Australia and Papua New Guinea, the possibility of up to 10,000 Papua New Guineans serving with the Australian Defence Force and the formation of the new Papua New Guinea Chiefs professional rugby team. The challenges in Australian Defence Force recruitment and what it takes for veterans to recommend their own journey as a career path to young people. Russell's thoughts about the “military fitness standards” speech delivered by US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth to US generals and flag officers at Quantico in Virginia in September. The new era of drone warfare and Russell's personal experiences facing early drone and drone-dropped explosives during deployment in the Middle East. On this week's podcast, I speak with former US Marine / Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Officer / DEA Agent Bret Hamilton. Bret served in the US Marine Corps as a commissioned Officer. Bret deployed in the 1 st Gulf War. Bret left the Marines and, still having a willingness to serve, he joined the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Police Department as a Patrol Officer. After a couple of years, Bret applied and was accepted to join the DEA Drug Enforcement Agency. Bret worked undercover and worked throughout the US. In 2009, Bret became a member of the Foreign Deployed Advisory Support Team (FAST). Bret deployed to Afghanistan in 2010; he was promoted to team leader after his first tour. In 2011, Bret deployed for his second tour to Afghanistan, working with Task Group 66. On this deployment, Bret was shot in the ass. After Bret recovered from being shot, he deployed in 2012 for his third and final deployment to Afghanistan. There, he met and worked alongside Heston Russell team commander of November Platoon. Bret continued to work in the DEA and was the Agent in charge in the state of Alabama. Recently, an interview conducted with Journalist Mark Willacy was used in the case against Heston Russell. Willacy changed what Bret said in the interview. Bret actually said he had nothing but high praise for Heston and the Commandos, and they were some of the most professional soldiers he ever served with, not what Willacy stated that he never wanted to work with Commandos and Heston. This is a raw and honest account. Presenter: Adam Blum Guest: Bret Hamilton Editor: Kyle Watkins
Hi Team, today we’re revisiting one of my favourite eps with Heston Russell. Heston is a Retired Special Forces Major, who after 16 years in the military and over 100 combat missions serving within the Special Forces, found his way to TYP Central for a chat and it (the conversation) was a revelation, inspiration and in some ways, not what I expected at all. I thought it would be good but it was brilliant. He was brilliant. We chatted about the mindset, morality and ethics around killing people when it’s part of your job (weird, I know), performing under the ultimate pressure (someone shooting at you), returning to ‘normal life’ after combat and some fascinating stuff that I don’t want to share in this overview because it will ruin the listening moment. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode of the Defence Connect Podcast, senior journalist Robert Dougherty is joined by Heston Russell – a public speaker, author and former Australian Special Forces officer – to discuss the 2025 Veteran Games and the recent regional heat held in Darwin on 22 August and later this year on the Gold Coast (11 and 12 October). He holds a bachelor of arts from the University of NSW, majoring in history and Indonesian. The pair discuss a range of issues, including: The Veteran Games, veterans support services and why Russell founded the games in 2022 in response to findings from the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide. Returning home and the reality of living in Australia as a military veteran, the challenges associated with reacclimatising to civilian life and how the defence industry can help veterans return with life of purpose outside the Australian Defence Force. Russell's own experience navigating media scrutiny after service and his recommendations to other veterans in their interactions with journalists. His experience as a young veteran in relation to traditional support associations in Australia. The pair also look at whether these organisations have the draw and support needed to attract younger veterans. The podcast wraps up by discussing the need to improve Australian leadership, take a bigger role in peacekeeping operations and how Australia can be a force for good in peacekeeping across the globe. Former special forces commando Heston Russell has an impressive resume from his time in the Australian Defence Force. The fifth-generation soldier has service in his blood, with more than 100 combat missions under his belt. His drive and passion helped him work his way quickly through the ranks. But behind the success, self-doubt, the loss of a soldier under his command and hiding his sexuality play on Heston's mind. After completing basic and initial employment training Scott had the desire to post to a unit that supports special forces and with hard work he was posted to 126 Signals Squadron which supports the at the time 4RAR soon to be renamed 2nd Commando Regiment Australian Special Forces on the East coast of Australia.Scott deployed on two SOTG rotations supporting 2CDO on operations in Afghanistan in Romeo Platoon Bravo Company and with November Platoon Alpha Company. During his deployments Scott encountered multiple life changing scenarios including calling in a medevac for KIA Brett Till, WIA Damien Thomlinson and the when Scott Smith was killed by an IED.In recent years November platoon was falsely portrayed and defamed in the media more specifically by the ABC network portraying that the platoon was involved in war crimes also most recently altering gun shots of a clip with Heston Russell and Scott the soldier that fired his weapon in a helo during a 2CDO task. The ABC lost the defamation case against the platoon commander Heston Russell and the ABC denied actions of editing audio and suggested it was an editing error. www.3zeroscoffee.com.auInstargram @3zeroscoffee Discount Code 3ZLimits Website - www.zerolimitspodcast.comInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/zero.limits.podcast/?hl=enHost - Matty Morris www.instagram.com/matty.m.morrisSponsorsGatorz Australia - www.gatorzaustralia.com15% Discount Code - ZERO15(former/current military & first responders 20% discount to order please email orders@gatorzaustralia.com.auGetSome Jocko Fuel - www.getsome.com.au10 % Discount Code - ZEROLIMITS
Heston Russell has lived a life most of us couldn’t imagine. A former special forces commander, he’s been shot at, dropped out of helicopters, and led troops through the chaos of Afghanistan and Iraq. But it wasn’t until he came home that he faced his toughest fight yet — not against an enemy overseas, but against his own country. Heston and his men were accused of war crimes, and suddenly, he was battling to defend their names against the weight of national headlines and public judgment. In this episode, we dive into Heston’s intense defamation case against the ABC, but we go deeper, too, into what it’s like to be a soldier at war and what you do when you’re wrongly accused of a crime you didn’t commit. A 5th generation military man called by a purpose to serve our country, Commando Heston Russell put his life on the line in 5 tours of Iraq & Afghanistan. His calling to serve & willingness to sacrifice his life on the front line, filled him with pride until our country turned their back on him. Branding Heston a war criminal, the ABC released doctored footage and accused Heston of committing a war crime. Proving he wasn't even in the country at the time of the incident & that the footage had been manipulated, Heston was not only cleared of the accusations but he also won a landmark defamation case in the Federal Court against the ABC. Throughout this process, the politicians who had formerly called on Heston for his expertise did not answer his calls for assistance & the Australian Defence Force did not reach out to even check in on him once. Heston was abandoned by the people he served whilst in the fight of his life. However, now on the other side of a more tumultuous time, I was privileged to share this incredible conversation with him. There are a few things I admire about Heston. Of course, his service to our great country is one of them, but at the core of this incredible man is one of the most powerful stories & unique personalities I have had on the show. Here is what to expect for our chat:- Crushing all stereo types, Heston now openly speaks about his sexuality as a gay man - one of the very few who have walked his path in life to do so. - He shares some absolutely hilarious stories in the conversation that had me in stitches. The more wholesome message though is the importance of embracing who you truly are to live a fulfilled life & reconnect with your purpose in life.- We break down & discuss the mindset & character required to be a high performer in the special forces.- Heston intimately shares the words he wrote in death notes to family & friends before heading off on his most dangerous deployments. He believes that this is one of the most powerful exercises you can do to find inner peace & channel high performance.- We speak about leadership & why it seems to be lacking in Australian politics.- All of this & so much more in one of my all time favourite episodes of the show.Follow Heston & I on socials @bradleyjdryburgh @hestonrussellGo to https://hestonrussell.com/book for his incredible book! @HestonRussell on YouTube. If you enjoyed this episode, subscribe to the channel so that I can continue to interview the best guests from around the world & share the most entertaining & insightful conversations with you.Big love,Brad xx Hosted on Acast. Heston Russell has been through some horrible sh*t; physical, mental, emotional, personal and professional. Some of it he was highly trained for, some of it he wasn't. Some of it he chose, some of it he didn't. And while you might think his biggest challenges would have been as a Special Forces Officer in the middle of combat situations around the world, the reality is different. If you haven't watched the Channel 7 'Spotlight' doco that unpacks Heston's fascinating (and harrowing) journey to hell and back, I strongly suggest you do. I thought I'd share the channel 7 synopsis here because they did a great job. **With a proud lineage of military relatives, Heston Russell enlisted in the army at 17 and rose through the ranks to become a highly decorated officer with more than 10,000 hours of leadership in combat operations, including four combat deployments to Afghanistan and a fifth to Iraq to fight against ISIS. He proved fearless in battle, iron-willed in his personal convictions and prepared to put it all on the line. As a soldier, Russell led our troops into countless battles and when he retired, he kept fighting. He campaigned for the royal commission into veteran suicide, built charities for soldiers and even ran for a seat in the Queensland senate. But his toughest fight came several years after his discharge, when Russell became the target of a relentless attack launched by the investigations unit of the ABC alleging that he was the worst kind of soldier - leaving a trail of destruction in Afghanistan and involved in fraudulent behaviour back home. Russell's battleground this time: the Australian Federal Court, where he spent almost three years fending off the ABC's allegations of war crimes.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Heston Russell is a retired Special Forces Major and decorated combat Veteran who has dedicated his life to serving his country and the wider Veteran community. He joined the Australian Army at the age of 17 as a fifth generation Army Veteran following in the footsteps of his father Mark who served for over twenty years in the Australian Army. While at the Australian Defence Force Academy, Heston completed a Bachelor of Arts from the University of New South Wales majoring in History & Indonesian. After 16 years of serving in the military - where he lead elite, high performance teams and completed over 100 combat missions with the Special Forces - he found his true purpose defending and protecting those who were innocent. And taking the fight to those who were not. Transitioning back to civilian life was challenging to say the least. In August 2020, feeling irrelevant and isolated, he almost gave up on life. In that harrowing moment, he realised the person truly holding him back was himself. Since then, he's been on a mission to use his experience as a leader and his love for his country to solve real world problems and empower people to achieve their full potential. In this episode, Heston shares his reflections, thoughts and views on military life, on transitioning back into civilian life and what he's learnt through the rollercoaster journey.
