Send us a textIt should be noted that this episode was recorded on January 2, 2025, one day after the terror attacks in New Orleans and Las Vegas. Of course, there will be new information as the investigations proceed regarding these horrific acts of cowardly violence. My heart goes out to the victims and their families. We touch on this topic, but know that all the facts aren't in and we may never know exactly what the motives were, how many were involved, and what could have been done to prevent these tragedies.Today on the show I was lucky enough to get back up from my friend and fellow author, retired Chicago Police Department Detective Lieutenant Richard Rybicki. The good lieutenant served for over 29 years on the Chicago Police Department where he worked as a Patrol Officer, Tactical Officer, Gang Crimes Specialist, Detective, Patrol Sergeant, Detective Sergeant, Patrol Lieutenant, and Detective Lieutenant. His last assignment was as the Lieutenant/commanding officer of the Area Three Homicide/Sex/Gang Crimes unit.Thank you for joining us as we look back on 2024 and peer into 2025 with all its good, bad, and ugly.In today's episode we discuss:· What's a “ghoul pool” and other New Year's Eve stories from big city cops.· What really happens in big cities in the United States on New Year's and how the cops cope with the stress.· Me almost getting shot on my second New Year's Eve as a rookie cop.· The terror attacks in New Orleans and Las Vegas on New Year's.· What is the FBI doing about these attacks?· 144 police officers killed in the line of duty in 2024.· The problem with recruitment and retention of law enforcement in the U.S.A. · Writing and publishing trends in 2024.· What's going to be big in 2025 in the writing biz? Send us a textIt's been a while since I recorded a question-and-answer episode, so that is what we are doing today. A very special thank you to the members of the Cops and Writers Facebook group for the questions.I was lucky enough to get back up from my friend and fellow author, retired Chicago Police Department Detective Lieutenant, Richard Rybicki. His last assignment was as the Lieutenant/commanding officer of the Area Three Homicide/Sex/Gang Crimes unit.In today's episode we discuss:· Rick's newest book series that is in development that has a very interesting plot twist! · Funny and disturbing Thanksgiving stories from the street.· Alex Wilson asks; My story is a fictional murder in the UK. Would a pathologist or similar ever go to see a body at the crime scene, to advise on the probable cause of death, possible weapons used etc, or would this only happen later at the postmortem?· Sharon Reichs asks; How did you keep from killing a supervisor with all the liberal bullshit they spew as directives? (Not that I have an opinion or anything).· Katherine Kovacic asks; What do you consider your best case and why? [Unrelated second question] Is there something you know now that you wish you knew then (specifically relating to policing!) and if so, what impact would that have had?· Rose Bingham asks, Present day Chicago. A victim found strangled in the rain. Some paper found under her coat (that the killer would've handled) that didn't get wet had fingerprints on it (do-able?). Security camera at night had shown 2 separate people at the scene. I have the detective reviewing the footage but needs to have it blown up and possibly made a bit clearer. Who would be the people working on the footage?· Lisa Messegee asks,California, present day, Is a detective required to attend the autopsy for a homicide victim? Would they want to, if it's not required? Could they delegate to a crime scene investigator?Visit Richard's author page on Amazon.Check out the Sam Laska Crime Thriller page on Facebook. Matt Farwell has been charged with murder for strangling Sandra to death in her apartment.Robert Devine survived a steep demotion due to a previous, rancid, public marital cheating scandal (not involving Sandra). On February 14, 2018, an active killer attacked the students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Florida killing 17 people and wounding another 17 people. The shooter then managed to flee the scene by slipping in with other students. The shooter was apprehended without incident over an hour later. In the months and years that followed this incident there was a firestorm of media coverage and legal actions directed at responding law enforcement agencies not only criticizing their response to the incident but also their failure to intervene with the shooter despite numerous red flags that preexisted the incident. Additionally, a Broward County Sheriff's Office School Resource Officer was charged, but acquitted, of child neglect and culpable negligence. There were also more than 50 civil suits filed resulting in millions of dollars in settlements as well as reassignments and resignations in the responding agencies. My guest today is Chief Clyde Parry. On the day of this incident Clyde was the interim Chief for the neighboring City of Coral Springs Florida and was responsible for setting up the initial incident command post and assuming incident command for the event. Clyde began his law enforcement career with the Derry Borough Police Department near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1986. In May of 1987 he relocated to Florida and began his career with the Coral Springs Police Department where he worked his way up through the ranks from Patrol Officer to Chief of Police. Clyde was sworn in as the permanent Chief of Coral Springs PD just 19 days after this event. The views and opinions expressed by Zach Pfannenstiel on this podcast are reflective of Echelon K9 and not of the San Diego Police Department. Patrol Officer. Gang Suppression Team Officer. Canine Handler. Training Sergeant. For Zach Pfannenstiel, these aren't just familiar titles - they're positions he's served as a faithful executor of the San Diego Police Department - a department that he still serves under today. He's also dedicated a notable amount of time in his career to the canine unit; over a decade in fact, where he continues to serve as the Training Sergeant responsible for overseeing a team of over 40 working dogs. But law enforcement is about more than simply catching criminals, - just last April, Zach testified in Sacramento to combat the elimination of Police Canines with Assembly Bill 3241, representing all Canine Handlers in the State of California. That encounter made such a profound impression on him that he knew what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. 15 years later, on July 7, 2016, in Dallas, Texas, K9 Officer Antommarchi found himself in the middle of the deadliest attack on law enforcement since 9/11. Tasked with the responsibility of clearing the downtown area for improvised explosive devices, the reason he got into working K9s came full circle. Being mentored by Tony Guzman and Robert “Bob” Suarez, Antommarchi is the Founder of Next Level K9 Texas, an Instructor for the Texas School Safety Center at Texas State University and K9 case study trainer for the Global Forensic Justice Center at Florida International University. Most recently, he became one of the lead trainers and co-designer of the training methodology for a scientific study on “Hemp vs Marijuana.” This study is to evaluate the ability for narcotic detector dogs to discriminate between the odor of marijuana and hemp. The study is being headed by Dr. Kelvin Frank of Florida International University and is in the process of being submitted for publication. Make sure you give him a follow below. I am a retired sworn law enforcement professional and multi-agency police chief with over 25 years of experience in municipal policing. I served as the Chief of Police for the City of Ithaca Police Department and prior to that served as the Chief of Police for the City of Oneonta Police Department. Both agencies serve vibrant, fast-paced, and progressive cities in Upstate New York. During my tenure with the City of Oneonta Police Department, I served in the capacities of Patrol Officer, D.A.R.E. Officer, Patrol Sergeant, Interim Detective Sergeant, Lieutenant, and ultimately Chief of Police for nearly five years. For the majority of my career, I also served as a senior instructor in defensive tactics, firearms, physical fitness, and police general topics. While Chief in Oneonta, my Department earned full New York State accreditation, which formed our path to becoming a well-respected and high-performance agency.Upon retirement in 2017, I assumed the role of Director of Research, Development, and Training for the New York State Association of Chiefs of Police. In this capacity, I led the organization's efforts in improving and advancing the policing profession while serving as a resource for over 500 police chiefs and command-level officers throughout New York State. In September of 2018, I was recruited by the City of Ithaca Police Department to serve as their Deputy Chief, with the expectation of ascending to the position of police chief within one year to replace their current chief upon his pending retirement. I accepted this opportunity and within eight months of hire, became the Acting Chief and within one year, was sworn in as the permanent Chief of Police. Through a positive and results-oriented leadership approach, I always endeavored to build strong collaborative community relationships through an emphasis on continual outreach, professionalism, accountability, and quality police services. During my tenure I also led the Department through its most tumultuous time including the global pandemic, many months of civil unrest, the police reforms in accordance with New York State Executive Order 203, and numerous high-profile incidents.Upon retirement in the Spring of 2021, I accepted a faculty position with the University of San Diego, teaching in their nationally acclaimed Law Enforcement and Public Safety Leadership (LEPSL) Master's degree program. Here, I also serve as the host for the University's Blue Leadership Podcast series which highlights today's leaders and the key issues facing law enforcement throughout the country. - Dennis Nayor
