FLASHBACK! Autobiographical comics are par for the course, but in 1972, Justin Green broke ground for the genre when he published Binky Brown Meets the Holy Virgin Mary. Some of that broken ground hasn't been trod since; how many autobiographical comics about a battle with mental illness have you seen done as wacky parody comics? … Continue reading #372 “Binky Brown Meets the Holy Virgin Mary”: Painful Personal Memoir as Wacky Comedy!

Patrick dives deep into the moral complexities of modern life through a Catholic lens. He deliberates unconventional questions about life's beginnings, grapples with the church's teachings on respecting the body post-death, and revisits the Pentecostal miracle with fervor. Patrick listens to heartfelt stories of forgiveness in marriage, untangles the church's stance on the rapture, and tackles the sensitive pro-life debate amidst a society in flux. Norm - Ephesians 5:25 helped me to forgive my wife for infidelity Tracey - What does the Catholic Church say about the rapture? Is there a video that Patrick could recommend that I could show my teen? (05:19) Joshua - I think this is the best era of human existence. Eric - Could a Catholic couple adopt a baby if a woman is living a bad lifestyle gets pregnant? If a woman wants to get implanted but doesn't want to keep the baby, could a catholic plan to adopt the child? Maribel - Why do we prefer Catholic burial instead of cremation? (29:17) Lisa - Do we have to believe in the miracles of Pentecost? Dave - My son married another man. Is my son still a Christian? He's broken off contact with me and my wife. He says he was born that way. (35:23) Rhonda - Who do I start talking to when I pray? Jesus, God, or Mary? Is Jesus going to present me to God when I die? Betty - Was Russia consecrated to the Holy Virgin Mary?

Unveiling the Hidden Blessings: Celebrating Joachim and Anne – The Holy Parents of Mary Today, the Church commemorates a significant privilege, though historically it has often had not been paid much attention. When we reflect upon the prominent figures of Israel, names like Abraham, Jacob, David, Solomon, and Moses naturally come to mind, while Joachim and Anne are curiously omitted. Yet, within Abraham's blessings as the father of a nation lies an even greater blessing. For what could be more profound than being the parents of the Holy Virgin Mary herself? The homily delves into the illustrious names of Israel and the blessings they brought forth. It also explores the exceptional blessings bestowed upon Joachim and Anne. Why do we hold Abraham in great esteem? Because of the profound events that followed his life! Likewise, let us explore and celebrate Joachim and Anne, discovering the significance of their story within the homily. Today, our celebration centers around Joachim and Anne—a special mother and father, a devoted husband and wife, and faithful children of Israel. Some may perceive commemorating a husband and wife as ordinary. Especially when compared to awe-inspiring events like Moses' parting the Red Sea or Abraham's miraculous wonders. Yet, there is something extraordinary hidden within the fabric of family life that we explore further, finding a deeper connection to ourselves and the essence of this marriage. Unbeknownst to many, it was within the struggles and joys of Joachim and Anne's marriage that something truly marvelous occurred—the birth of the Immaculate Conception. Our Lady, Mary, was conceived without original sin, a testament to the holiness of their marriage. Join us in this meditation. Listen as this media unravels the profound implications and significance of Joachim and Anne's union in relation to the Immaculate Conception.
How, in the name of the Holy Virgin Mary, did Michelle Remembers—the book that started the Satanic Panic—come to be written? Who was Lawrence Pazder really? Did he encourage and exaggerate Michelle Smith's recovered memories of ritual abuse? Did Smith tell him what he wanted to hear? Or was it a little of both? Canadian filmmakers Sean Horlor and Steve Adams have a new documentary out called “Satan Wants You,” and it fills in a lot of the blanks in our prior “Swan Song Series” reporting with incredible archival footage and brave interviews from friends and family members. Today it opens at Toronto's Hot Docs Festival, which means the reviews embargo is lifted… and our review is: “Incredible work. Must see.” PS! The Feast of St. Joseph, the Spouse of the Virgin Mary Today is not the Feast of St. Joseph! It is the Feast of St. Joseph, the Spouse of the Virgin Mary. It is the only feast day in which liturgically the Church celebrates under the title of Husband. Remarkable. There are married couples that are saints, but their title does not include their spouse. For example, our Lady's parents are not entitled parents or spouse. Only Joseph. The Church celebrates the dignity of what it means to be a husband, as well as the dignity of marriage. The Church celebrates the particular relationship with the Holy Virgin Mary. Hear why this Feast Day is so important. Listen to this Meditation Media.
On this Day a Son is Given to Us . . . and as a Result, We Also Belong to Him! The Feast of the Queenship of Mary On this Day a Son is Given to Us . . . and as a Result, We Also Belong to Him! Strange title for a day in which we celebrate the Queenship! At first glance, it also seems like an odd Gospel to have on the Feast of the Queenship of Our Lady. The Gospel is a dialogue between Jesus and His Father just before Our Lord's Passion. Great as it is, how does that relate to the feast day we celebrate? On this day, when the Montfort Community honors Our Lady, under the title Queen of All Hearts, this Gospel is particularly appropriate. The Homily references the statue and image of Our Lady, Queen of All Hearts (see full image on the website). This title appears in Latin on the statue. At the foot of the throne is a book, authored by St. Louis de Montfort. The book is the treatise concerning True Devotion to the Holy Virgin Mary. The book is indeed the True Devotion to Mary. Fr. de Montfort wrote that Mary is the key to experiencing an authentic Christian life. A Son Is Given Enthroned upon Our Lady is the King. He is sitting upon His throne. His throne is the Queen. A loyal subject honors Our Lady on her throne. Yet, she herself is the throne of the King . . . Jesus Christ. Hear more about the throne within the Homily. Knelling before the throne is a loyal subject (Montfort). This great Apostle of the Cross and Apostle of the Rosary is kneeling before the throne. In the first reading (not included within this audio), we hear a reading read on Christmas Eve. A Son is given to us! What Son? Jesus Christ! Whose Son? God the Father. And the Son of Our Lady. Because the Son is given to US, notice the sense of belonging. Why? Because the Son is also ours! Hear more within the Homily! The One who is given to us is the One who will also save us! As a result, we likewise our His . . . we belong to Him! Wow! What a connection! On this day of Queenship…meditate on this day that we belong to Our Lord. He is given to us . . . and we are given to Him! Hear more on this day we celebrate Our Lady and her Queenship! Hear more about the image of the Queenship. Understand this Queen of All Hearts image. For all members of the Association, understand the image of Mary, Queen of All Hearts. Listen to this Meditation Media.
Friends of the Rosary: Today, on the day after Pentecost, we celebrate the Memorial Day of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, that is to say of all Christian people. Jesus Christ, as He was hung upon the Cross, chose the Holy Virgin Mary, his Mother to be our Mother also. The Catholic Church promotes this devotion to encourage Marian's piety and reflect the divine motherhood of Mary and her intimate union in the work of the Redeemer. Ave Maria! The Presentation of the Lord . . . What Does the Church Ask From Us Today? Today is a very rich celebration. Today the feast day is called The Presentation of the Lord in the Temple. In an earlier age, it was referred to as The Purification of the Holy Virgin Mary. This Mystery contains presentation and purification. We celebrate the purification by one who is spotless and without stain. We also celebrate the presentation of the Lord. The feast celebrates the presentation of the very Lord of the Temple. This feast is a very rich celebration. The Gospel introduces us to an old man who has lived a great number of years. He has a vision of the newly born Christ-child, as well as the vision of salvation. What joy was granted to this tired elderly man. The temple, which contains the presence of God, is suddenly filled with the presence of God like it has never before on this day. This is a rich celebration. There are many days in the liturgical year when the focus is on the spiritual or moral message of scripture. Today is not one of these days. Today, the Church asks us to open our eyes and look at Jesus. To look at Jesus and know Him, as we have not done before today. See Him . . . as the light of revelation and the glory of people. What does that mean? See Him as the light and glory? What actually does the Church as from us? Listen to this Meditation Media.

Yet he is at the same time a more enigmatic and lesser-understood figure in Christianity. Fr. Stephen De Young and Fr. [Comment: How the World Changes] Friends of the Rosary: The supernatural apparitions of the Holy Virgin in Guadalupe, Lourdes, and Fatima—to name the most relevant—resulted in the conversion and sanctification of countless souls. These events changed the world. The whole world benefits from the conversion of even one heart. The Heavens rejoice with the salvation of one soul and the entire Earth improves. This is one of the mysteries of the Creation. The Holy Trinity never stops giving us opportunities so we can correct our impulse to destruction and embrace the true life. Why our hearts are so hardened? After Jesus' resurrection and ascension into Heaven, the Holy Virgin Mary was commissioned to appear on Earth from time to time, to reopen the eyes of our soul and make us rejoice in the love of Jesus Christ. With our daily Rosary, we invoke the Marian Light. Ave Maria! [Comment: Perfect Consecration] [Video Tour at Boston's Holy Cross Cathedral] Friends of the Rosary, The Holy Virgin Mary was—and is—all-perfection because she was the most conformed and united creature to Jesus Christ of all-time. The Queen of Angels and Saints and Spouse of the Holy Spirit was the perfect disciple of the Son of God. Hence, the consecration to Jesus Christ is by the Blessed Mary. St. Louis de Montfort wrote: “The most perfect consecration to Jesus Christ is nothing else but a perfect and entire consecration of ourselves to the Blessed Virgin.” Through the devotion of the Holy Rosary, we give ourselves to Our Lady in Heaven, and by Her, we belong entirely to Jesus Christ. [Comment: Accepting Our Cross] Friends of the Rosary, God's timing is not our timing. That's why one of the virtues to cultivate is patience. Our Father knows what we really need before we ask, and He delivers at the right time. We don't see it that way and fall into despair. The two virtues to pursue are faith and hope. A Rosary friend was telling us on the YouTube forum yesterday that "she was barren and broken and was praying and absolutely nothing was happening." What could we tell her? There is much suffering, pain, and struggle in life. The holiest people on Earth—and now perpetually joyful in Heaven—suffered tremendously. No one knew the intensity of pain as the Holy Virgin Mary. She stayed humble, silent, and faithful, offering her affliction. Jesus Himself, the Son of God, accepted death on a cross. The apostles were martyred. Our friend Mary carries a big cross being barren and broken. Every one of us carries crosses, as well. We must accept our cross, and understand that in our suffering we glorify God and His glory comes back to us making us stronger and happier. Ave Maria! [Written by Mikel A | TheRosaryNetwork.org, New York] ___ Today is the Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children. Abortion is not a human right. Abortion is a direct attack on life and a serious offense to the Creator. It's a collective failure, a legalized and silent holocaust, that also wounds women, families, and the entire society. Nearly a million unborn lives are eliminated in the U.S. year after year through abortion. Imposing further expansions of abortion is a sin and an attack on human dignity. We pray for the conversion of those who refuse to understand that every life is a God's given gift and the unborn are humans. By expanding legal protection, promoters of abortion risk their souls for eternity. On this special episode of the podcast, Derek moderates a roundtable discussion on comics and religion. Joining him on the panel are Elizabeth Coody (teaching at the Iliff School of Theology), Jeff Brackett (Ball State University), and A. David Lewis (Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences), all of whom are comics scholars focusing on representations of religious belief and faith. They begin their discussion by sharing their backgrounds in comics and how they have found the medium a useful means to approaching religious studies. In addition to describing the specifics of their scholarship, the panelists also discuss the various strategies they've employed when using comics in the classroom, along with the challenges that come when using comics to teach issues of faith. The subjects that come up during the discussion range from superheroes and myths, manifestations of the afterlife, adaptations of religious texts, biographies of religious leaders, expressions of heaven and hell, the crossroads of faith and ethnicity, and parodic (even heretical) representations of religious figures, doctrines, and practices. At times on the panel the discussants clash or come at books from different angles -- for example, Jeff and David disagree on the usefulness of Craig Thompson's Habibi and Derek pushes back on the "religiousness" of such comics as Maus, A Contract with God, and Persepolis -- but the talk is always lively and insightful. Among the many texts they reference are Neil Gaiman's Sandman series, Mike Carey's Lucifer, Justin Green's Binky Brown Meets the Holy Virgin Mary, Robert Crumb's The Book of Genesis Illustrated, Sean Murphy's Punk Rock Jesus, Mark Waid's Kingdom Come, Mark Millar's American Jesus, and Craig Thompson's Blankets. They even discuss comics as religious propaganda, such as what you'll find in the Spire comics published by Archie during the 1970s and the ever-present Chick tracts. The panelists covered a lot of ground, but there was so much more that was left unspoken...enough to warrant a future follow-up roundtable on the same topic.
