In this episode of the Radical Radiance Podcast, host Rebecca George welcomes Amanda Hope Haley to discuss her new book, 'Stones Still Speak: How Biblical Archaeology Illuminates the Stories You Thought You Knew.' They explore the creative process behind the book, the disconnect between biblical interpretation and archaeological findings, and the surprising truths about well-known biblical figures like Goliath. Amanda shares her journey in archaeology and how it has strengthened her faith, emphasizing the importance of understanding the historical context of scripture. The conversation also touches on the balance between appreciating artistic interpretations of biblical stories and discerning their accuracy. Amanda concludes with personal reflections on grace and faith, encouraging listeners to engage deeply with scripture.KeywordsAmanda Hope Haley, Stones Still Speak, Biblical Archaeology, Goliath, Faith, Scripture, Art, Interpretation, Christian Traditions, Historical ContextTakeawaysAmanda has worked in archaeology since 2004.There is a disconnect between academic knowledge and church teachings.Archaeology can help clarify misconceptions about scripture.Goliath was not a giant; he was likely around six and a half feet tall.Understanding the context of scripture can transform our interpretation.Academic study can strengthen faith rather than complicate it.Contradictions in the Bible encourage deeper exploration of faith.Artistic interpretations of scripture often reflect cultural contexts. We should appreciate the intentions behind historical depictions.Engaging with scripture requires time and relationship with God.Chapters00:00 Introduction to Radical Radiance Podcast02:26 Exploring Biblical Archaeology and Its Impact07:00 The Goliath Myth: Unpacking Misconceptions09:48 The Role of Academic Study in Faith13:16 Artistic Interpretations of Scripture16:01 Personal Reflections and Spiritual Growth18:57 Practical Advice for Engaging with Scripture21:47 Conclusion and ResourcesStones Still Speak on Amazon: https://amzn.to/4pHS0DqSponsors:Comfy Earrings: www.comfyearrings.comCSB: https://www.bhpublishinggroup.com/csb-womens-study-bible/?emid=pm:em:260101|acq|na|bibles|christian_standard_bible|na|2634076_radical_radiance_womens_study_bible:na:na&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_campaign=fy26_bh-bibles_spring26_womens-study-bible&utm_source=radical-radiance&utm_content=acquisition_womens-study-bible_20260101Live Oak Integrative Health: http://www.liveoakintegrativehealth.com/radianceLinks:Radiance Retreat Info: Radiance Retreat 2026 — Radical RadianceSpeaking: https://www.radicalradiance.live/speaking Creative Business Coaching: https://www.radicalradiance.live/coaching Camp for Creatives: https://www.radicalradiance.live/campforcreatives Listen to Radical Radiance on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/radical-radiance/id1484726102?uo=4 Listen to Radical Radiance on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/55N56VtU6q33ztgJNw7oTX?si=29648982bc91475f Take the FREE Waiting Personality Quiz: https://www.tryinteract.com/share/quiz/676d5c2884dd1e00159563f6 Take the Why Are You Stuck in Your Calling? We're speaking with Richard Breitman, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of history at American University about his 45+ year career, and his 12 books. We talked about how research on FDR and the Holocaust spawned many research projects; how convenience and cost affects archival projects; how an agent can helpfully shape a writing project; how journalists can play a useful role in disseminating academic research; how even successful co-authoring has its rough patches; and getting past the “Hasn't that been done before?” challenge to a book idea. Art-Making as Spiritual Practice: Rituals of Embodied Understanding (Bloomsbury Academic Press, 2025), edited by Professor David Newheiser, is a new collection asks if it's possible to consider art-making as a spiritual practice independent of explicit religious belief or content. Where earlier research has focused on the religious significance of secular artworks, this innovative volume turns its attention to the role of the artist, and to specific examples of art practices, putting them into conversation with ritual practices. By creating a web of connections that emerge across multiple disciplines and practices, a team of scholars and artists shed new light on the way art-making and ritual embody non-discursive forms of understanding. Drawing on the work of scholars who argue that ritual practice is central to religious identities, they use close analysis of specific examples to address philosophical issues about the nature of knowledge and spirituality and the relationship between them. Art-Making as Spiritual Practice is a rich and in-depth examination of the possibility that art has spiritual meanings that are endemic to the practice of art-making itself, establishing a new paradigm that changes the conversation surrounding the spiritual, if not religious, significance of art. Professor David Newheiser is a returning champion on New Books in Secularism—he joined us in 2020 to talk about his book Hope in a Secular Age: Deconstruction, Negative Theology, and the Future of Faith (Cambridge University Press, 2020) and in 2023 he told us about his edited collection, The Varieties of Atheism (University of Chicago Press, 2022). He is Associate Professor of Religion at Florida State University, with research that explores the role of religious traditions in debates over ethics, politics, and culture. He received a PhD in Religion from the University of Chicago and an MPhil in early Christian thought from Oxford. He is also co-editor of the Journal for the Academic Study of Religion. How, in the name of the Holy Virgin Mary, did Michelle Remembers—the book that started the Satanic Panic—come to be written? Who was Lawrence Pazder really? Did he encourage and exaggerate Michelle Smith's recovered memories of ritual abuse? Did Smith tell him what he wanted to hear? Or was it a little of both? Canadian filmmakers Sean Horlor and Steve Adams have a new documentary out called “Satan Wants You,” and it fills in a lot of the blanks in our prior “Swan Song Series” reporting with incredible archival footage and brave interviews from friends and family members. Today it opens at Toronto's Hot Docs Festival, which means the reviews embargo is lifted… and our review is: “Incredible work. Must see.” PS! If you haven't pre-ordered our fabulously interesting book, Barnes and Noble are running a 25% off pre-order promo. You can use "PREORDER25" as the discount code at checkout. According to RAKESH SHARMA, one of the most enduring mysteries of Bitcoin is the identity of its founder, Satoshi Nakamoto. "Little is known about this person or group, and their identity has never been confirmed," the writer adds in a post on Investopedia. "In October 2008, a message signed by Satoshi Nakamoto titled "Bitcoin P2P e-cash paper" announced the creation of the cryptocurrency. For the next two years, Satoshi remained active in the community, communicating with others in the development of the blockchain. Satoshi's last message on the Bitcoin forums was posted in December 2010, though unverified private messages from April 2011 have surfaced." This is an intriguing time for the volatile crypto markets with the spectacular fallout from the collapse of the FTX crypto platform and a blitz of significant pieces on crypto by industry leaders. One piece in the Wall Street Journal calls for a ban on crypto by US regulators following the example of the Chinese government. There is also a controversial theory making the rounds based on an academic study by Sean Griffin that may show evidence of bitcoin being artificially propped up by a secretive group. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/john-aidan-byrne0/support

There's no Teal Swan without the Satanic Panic. And there's no Satanic Panic without the 1980 publication of Michelle Remembers, by Lawrence Pazder and Michelle Smith. In this first of three segments on this melted book, Matthew and Julian cover its historical, cultural, and mass media context. We start with a review of a 1985 20/20 episode called “The Devil Worshippers” for a taste of how mainstream outlets hosted cranks like Pazder, giving him a hall pass on evidence, and overlooking how his Catholic fetishes and paranoias played a huge role in the fictions he spun. The post Vatican 2 context is crucial, especially as we bear witness to the current political triumphs of Trad-Cath propaganda and politics in our post-Roe, QAnon -fried world. For help, we look to an excellent essay by social historian Bernard Doherty about the genre and elements of the Catholic Horror Film, which begins with Rosemary's Baby in 1968. This reactionary genre attempted to respond to modernizing—or postmodernizing, as Jordan Peterson might say—changes in Church doctrine. Bottom line? The Satanic Panic largely begins in and is sustained by Catholic-flavoured conspirituality anxiety about secularization, sex, babies, and abortion. CORRECTIONS: My dad informs me that I've made some Pope mistakes! Pius X was the last legitimate Pope according to the sedavacantists, and John XXIII, not Paul XXIII, opened the Vatican 2 proceedings. Thx dad. In February 2022, Russia launched a full-scale and unprovoked military invasion of Ukraine, falsely claiming that it aimed to “demilitarize” and “denazify” the country. While many people are broadly aware of the terrible toll that Russia's war has wrought on civilians, there is less awareness about the religious ramifications of the Russian invasion.Ruslan Khalikov and Liliia Pidgorna, two scholars with the Workshop for the Academic Study of Religion in Ukraine, join us today to discuss the impact Russia's invasion of Ukraine has had on religious freedom.Read USCIRF's 2022 Annual Report Chapter on RussiaRead USCIRF's Backgrounder: RussiaWith Contributions from: Dwight Bashir, Director of Outreach and Policy, USCIRFKeely Bakken, Senior Policy Analyst, USCIRFDylan Schexnaydre, Victims List and Outreach Specialist, USCIRF
Jessica Maddox, an assistant professor of digital media at the University of Alabama, is the author of the forthcoming book The Internet Is For Cats: How Animal Images Shape Our Digital Lives. Her research has largely involved looking at how people share and consume photos of animals on the Internet. She and Annie discuss a variety of topics relating to social media pets. Maddox offers an academic take on why people create Instagram accounts for their pets, are drawn to stories about Ukrainian rescue cats, and more. What does Youtube have to say about the practice of tying puppies to train tracks so that someone can post a video of their rescue? Why do some brands prefer to work with pet influencers over human ones? Are we living in a new era of anthropomorphizing our pets in a non-private arena, or is this just a new iteration of an age-old practice? And: Is it possible to breed an NFT cat? Maddox addresses these questions, and more.
