A particularly important episode of the Mind Over Finger Podcast with guest Lara St. John where we discuss the context and impact of sexual abuse, the lack of representation, and how women often don't get the support they need. Lara shares her own experiences and she stresses the need for institutions to step up and create a safe space for everyone by being transparent, and having clear steps to handle sexual harassment and assault. Finally, we touch on the power dynamics and gender issues in the classical music world and the difficulty of addressing these issues in a society that often prefers to stay silent Download the transcript from this episode HERE MORE ABOUT LARA ST. “Rule 4: Check In Regularly The best way to ensure that all parties are comfortable with any sexual activity is to talk about it, check in periodically, and make sure everyone involved consents before escalating or changing activities. Boundaries can change over time as you grow and experience new things. So what was okay recently, may not be okay today or tomorrow. You can withdraw consent at any point if you feel uncomfortable. One way to do this is to clearly communicate to your partner that you are no longer comfortable with this activity and wish to stop. Withdrawing consent can sometimes be challenging or difficult to do verbally, so non-verbal cues can also be used to convey this. That's where the next rule becomes really important. Rule 5: Respect Each Other Respect is about honoring one another's boundaries. Enthusiastic consent is a model for understanding consent that focuses on a positive expression of consent. Simply put, enthusiastic consent means looking for the presence of a “yes” rather than the absence of a “no.” Enthusiastic consent can be expressed verbally or through nonverbal cues, such as positive body language like smiling, maintaining eye contact, and nodding. These cues alone do not necessarily represent consent, but they are additional details that may reflect consent. It is necessary, however, to still seek verbal confirmation. The important part of consent, enthusiastic or otherwise, is checking in with your partner regularly to make sure that they are still on the same page. Enthusiastic consent can look like: Asking permission before you change the type or degree of sexual activity with phrases like “Is this OK?” Confirming that there is reciprocal interest before initiating any physical touch. Letting your partner know that it's okay to stop at any time. Periodically checking in with your partner, such as asking “Is this still okay?” Accepting an answer of “no” without asking again Providing positive feedback when you're comfortable with an activity. Explicitly agreeing to certain activities, either by saying “yes” or another affirmative statement, like “I'm open to trying.” Using physical cues to let the other person know you're comfortable taking things to the next level (see note below). Consent does NOT look like: Refusing to acknowledge “no” A partner who is disengaged, nonresponsive, or visibly upset Assuming that wearing certain clothes, flirting, or kissing is an invitation for anything more Someone being under the legal age of consent, as defined by the state Someone being incapacitated because of drugs or alcohol Pressuring someone into sexual activity by repeatedly asking or using fear, intimidation, or coercion. Assuming you have permission to engage in a sexual act because you've done it in the past Physiological responses like an erection, lubrication, arousal, or orgasm are involuntary, meaning your body might react one way even when you are not consenting to the activity. Sometimes perpetrators will use the fact that these physiological responses occur to maintain secrecy or minimize a survivor's experience by using phrases such as, "You know you liked it." In no way does a physiological response mean that you consented to what happened. If you have been sexually abused or assaulted, it is not your fault.” -RAINN Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network.) --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support
“What are the warning signs? Child sexual abuse isn't always easy to spot and some survivors may not exhibit obvious warning signs. The perpetrator could be someone you've known a long time or trust, which may make it even harder to notice. Consider some of the following common warning signs: Physical signs: Bleeding, bruises, or swelling in genital area Bloody, torn, or stained underclothes Difficulty walking or sitting Frequent urinary or yeast infections Pain, itching, or burning in genital area Behavioral signs: Changes in hygiene, such as refusing to bathe or bathing excessively Develops phobias Exhibits signs of depression or post-traumatic stress disorder Expresses suicidal thoughts, especially in adolescents Has trouble in school, such as absences or drops in grades Inappropriate sexual knowledge or behaviors Nightmares or bed-wetting Overly protective and concerned for siblings, or assumes a caretaker role Returns to regressive behaviors, such as thumb sucking Runs away from home or school Self-harms Shrinks away or seems threatened by physical contact Where can I get help? If you want to talk to someone anonymously, call the National Child Abuse Hotline at 800.4.A.CHILD (422-4453), any time 24/7. Learn more about being an adult survivor of childhood sexual abuse. To speak with someone who is trained to help, call the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 800.656.HOPE (4673) or chat online at online.rainn.org. Want to learn more about healing after child sexual abuse? Access RAINN's eight-week learning series "Redefining Resilience" with topics such as understanding trauma, moving past shame, managing memories, and more.” -RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) Let's review 5 rules for obtaining, confirming, and honoring consent. Rule 1: Establish Boundaries Boundaries are your personal rules. They help you articulate the behaviors that make you feel safe and respected, not just in terms of sexual relationships, but in all sorts of relationships. Your boundaries can be shaped by many things, including the cultural norms you grew up with, like your family dynamics, your religion, your education, or where you grew up. Your personal life experiences and your personality also influence your comfort level with different interactions or activities. Boundaries can be physical, emotional, or digital, especially now as the coronavirus pandemic means so much of our lives take place online. Some examples of physical boundaries: I only hug people I know, not people I just met; but I'm comfortable shaking hands. I'd love to get together but I'm not comfortable with that right now since we have not been part of the same social pod. I'm not comfortable dining inside right now but I am comfortable eating outside. Examples of emotional boundaries could include things like: I need time alone each day to process my thoughts and feelings. I'd like to avoid conversations about religion because it is a difficult topic for me. Digital boundaries are becoming increasingly important in today's connected, always-on world. Some examples could include: I keep my social media accounts private and only allow followers/friends I know personally. I have the right to block/unfollow anyone I am uncomfortable with to protect myself when I am on social media. I need to detox from my phone before bed, so I don't look at it after 9 pm. I won't respond to any messages after that until the next day. Your personal boundaries are just that—yours. They help you define what you're comfortable with or uncomfortable with.” -RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network.) --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support

Activation warning: this episode contains explicit and graphic descriptions of sexual assault and rape. Discretionary caution is strongly advised. This episode is not for children. Please use extreme self-care in listening to this episode. If you are activated or triggered and need help, call the national sexual assault telephone hotline at 1-800-656-HOPE (4673). Here it is. The hard part. This is the rest of Alan's story. It wasn't easy for Alan to tell, and it's not easy to listen to. But it's important to Alan to be able to tell his story, and it's important that we all listen. Because talking about these horrible atrocities and discussing the prevalence of this rampant crime is vital to exposing biases and stigmas and reducing the prevalence of rape and sexual assault. Male victims of rape face unique challenges and stigmas that can make it difficult for them to talk about their rape; to come forward and seek help. So that makes Alan's telling of this violence even more impressive and important. Here are some hard facts about being a male victim of rape: Underreporting: Male victims of rape, like their female counterparts, often underreport the crime. There is a significant stigma associated with male victimization, and many men may fear not being believed or being ridiculed if they disclose their experience. Stigma and Stereotypes: Societal attitudes and stereotypes about masculinity can create a barrier for male victims. There is a common misconception that men should always be strong and in control, which can make it challenging for them to admit vulnerability and seek support. This is true, even at young ages, because boys are indoctrinated to be tough and strong…it's in our culture. Lack of Awareness: There is a lack of awareness about the prevalence of male sexual assault, which can make it even more difficult for male survivors to tell anyone about their experience, or to access appropriate services and support. Impact on Mental Health: Like female survivors, male victims of rape can suffer from severe psychological and emotional trauma, including symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, and a range of other mental health issues. Limited Support Services: There are fewer support services and resources specifically tailored to male survivors of sexual assault. This lack of resources can make it harder for male survivors to find the help they need. Perpetrators: Perpetrators of sexual assault can be of any gender, but the vast majority of reported cases involve male perpetrators. This can add another layer of complexity to the survivor's experience. Recovery: Recovery from sexual assault can be a long and difficult process for male victims. Finding the right support network, which may include therapy and counseling, is crucial for healing. It's essential to raise awareness of these issues, reduce stigma, and provide support and resources for male survivors of sexual assault. Organizations like RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) provide information, resources, and hotlines that are inclusive of all genders and can be a valuable source of support for male survivors. Please remember to do your part to help bring justice to victims and survivors of rape and sexual assault. How? Start By Believing. Because we all know someone whose life has been affected by rape or sexual assault. Here are some important resources that I would like for you to have:

Children of Scientology presents: The Lighthouse Project Podcast
Welcome back to the Lighthouse Project, a Children of Scientology Production. In our last episodes, we spoke with Claire Headley regarding the powerful expert witness testimony she provided in this trial. We discussed the systems of Scientology, including language, policies and practices used to control members which prevent them from reporting crimes to law enforcement. In this episode, we begin to look at Jane Doe 2's testimony to better understand her experience, what she went through, and what she was up against in her search for justice. We learn about how she came to be in Scientology, as a means to address her anxiety. We examine the competing force of Scientology against Psychology and how this prevents people from getting real help for mental illness. We read the testimony that Jane Doe 2 gave about a prior rape she experienced by another Scientologist and what followed; the reframing and threat of consequences. We discuss some of what expert witness Dr Ziv testified to in this trial, regarding the way victims commonly react to sex assault, and add to that, the efforts of Scientology to suppress the rape Jane Doe 2 knew she'd experienced. We relate to Scientology's handling of our own experiences with mental health issues, creating intentional stigma around mental health care, psychology, psychiatry, and anything other than Scientology treatment. We discuss Scientology's anti-psychiatry front group: CCHR - Citizens Commission on Human Rights, Mirriam relates to taring the roof of its Hollywood CA museum, as Sea Org children, when assigned to hard manual labor for wanting to leave the Sea Org, a very lengthy and laborious process. Victoria grapples with confusion & hurt around her brother's treatment of her, loyalty to Scientology over her, and her field auditor, whom she thought of as a mother, not providing her real help when she was self-harming suicidal after being drug raped, instead providing her Scientology only. We agree our Scientology abusers and witnesses of our abuses, are also victims of Scientology, and so we must navigate compassion & empathy since most never apologize, or seek forgiveness. We compare thoughts on Scientologists behaving as though they have a virus or addiction that overwhelms their sense of self, autonomy, ability to see right from wrong and act in their own accord, while they're led to believe, and behave as if they are doing the opposite: being free thinking, self-determined, and helping. We conclude a real danger of Scientology is its ability to use well-meaning members to perpetrate harm, and fraud on others. Tucked away on a small side road, on the edges of Boise, Anthony opens his home and heart to us in this difficult and challenging story. A professional auctioneer and aspiring Chef, Anthony takes us through his joys of working, the good things he has done, finding his way to becoming an accidental ski instructor for people who are disabled. Adaptive skiing is a way to modify ski equipment so anyone can enjoy the hills, and certainly this is a form of therapy for a broken soul trying to mend. Anthony shares his childhood nightmare of being sexually assaulted by his Grandfather, over time and locations. A betrayal of responsibility and destruction of trust, innocence and morality. Listen as he describes the ripple effect his traumatic childhood had on his once sound marriage, his relationship with his kids, and the letter he wrote that helped him heal. His current life is in disarray all the while his processional life grows and flourishes, providing him that hope he needs. Whatever consenting adults do behind closed doors is their own business… right? While we often hear this refrain to support gay issues, we test the boundaries of its truth by discussing the uncomfortable topic of incest. We cover worldwide societal norms; the Bible; the Westermarck Effect; the theory of Genetic Sexual Attraction; step-dad, step-son, and step-brother incest porn; consanguineous relationships; and, of course, the TV show Private Practice. Remember to submit audio or written entries to our theme song contest by April 1, and check out our Pacific Northwest tour dates at gayishpodcast.com/live. In this episode: News- 5:43 || Main Topic (Incest)- 24:50 || Gayest & Straightest- 1:33:07 On this very special bonus Patreon segment, it's a family affair! We have Ma Johnson join for a ridiculous Momsplaining, and Kyle surprises Mike with the text messages Mike's brothers sent when Kyle asked them, if they were gay, would they be attracted to Mike? Tonight's special guest is Janet Bentley from Scottsdale, Arizona, an author, speaker and advocate. She is the founder of Courageous Survivors, offering support to survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse (CSA). Childhood Sexual Abuse leaves the victim with emotional scars that last a lifetime. Courageous Survivors provides a place for adult survivors to share, find resources and gain strength from knowing that they can heal; that there are ways to get past the effects of this abuse. Janet's best-selling memoir, 'Don't Expect Me To Cry', was published in 2018 and received several awards including a Readers' Favorite Gold Medal, two years running! The book has remained at the top of several Amazon Best-seller lists since publication. It is a powerful story of the horrors Janet experienced at the hands of multiple abusers, including her father, and the courageous journey of healing that brought her to a life that is inspirational to other survivors. Janet's resilience is evident as she tells her story in three parts, reflecting her thoughts and experiences at critical stages of her life. Janet is a registered speaker for RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) and is a trained facilitator for Stewards of Children education developed by Darkness to Light. Janet lives in Scottsdale, Arizona, is a regular speaker at various events and is featured on several podcasts.

Happy New Year! I am thrilled today to sit down with actor, producer and advocate Sarah Ann Masse. In 2017, Sarah came forward with sexual misconduct allegations against Harvey Weinstein — one of many actresses (like Mira Sorvino and Ashley Judd) who said they had also suffered sexual harassment and sexual assault by the producer. She tells me her story of what happened that day at Weinstein's Connecticut home, the silence and anxiety she endured for years after, and the shocking backlash she says she suffered from our industry once she went public. Though Weinstein has been convicted of rape, sentenced to 23 years in New York prison and awaits another sexual assault trial in Los Angeles — many of his victims still suffer career retaliation for having spoken out. To turn that around, Sarah created her own initiative, Hire Survivors Hollywood, which aims to raise support for survivors of sexual violence within the entertainment industry by encouraging those in positions of power to make a pledge to hire survivors and silence breakers, and give them a fair chance through auditions, meetings and interviews, like any other person trying to make it in entertainment. I encourage all my beloved Casting Director colleagues, producers, writers, directors, studio and network executives to take the pledge: “I pledge to build a safer, more equitable industry by giving opportunities, auditions, & interviews to survivors & #SilenceBreakers. I'll never retaliate against anyone for coming forward about sexual violence. I pledge to @HireSurvivors #TakeThePledge #HireSurvivorsHollywood” No one deserves to be punished for telling the truth. Follow Hire Survivors Hollywood on instagram, twitter, and facebook to join the conversation and learn more. Please use #HireSurvivorsHollywood to be a part of the conversation! If you have been a victim of sexual violence and believe you have faced direct or indirect career retaliation because of it please email our encrypted email address HireSurvivorsHollywood@protonmail.com Please also see the following resources if you need help. To start, I want to issue a trigger warning. This week's episode talks about sexual harassment and sexual assault. If these are triggers for you, please feel free to skip this episode. I am starting by talking to Stacie Lick, a family friend and Lieutenant in the Gloucester County Special Victims's Unit, basically a real-life Olivia Benson. We are discussing disability and sexual assault- the statistics, the laws that address these crimes, and resources that are available for victims. After our conversation I share my story. Episode 87 Kymberlee Larsen In early 2018, 22 year-old Kymberlee Larsen seemed to have a lot going for her. She had recently given birth to her son, Donovan, and she was living in Meridian, Idaho with Donovan's father, Evan Bashir. Things were looking good for the young family, but in March of 2018, Evan abused Kym for the first time, and she was not going to let there be a second time. She fled their home, and took her young son to stay at her sister Chelsea's home in Nampa. But only days later, Evan showed up at the home and the unthinkable happened. Evan forced his way in and attacked Kym, her sister Chelsea, and their mom Julianna with a machete while 3 young children nearby. It was like something out of a horror movie and when the carnage was finally over, Kym was dead, and her mother and sister were seriously wounded. Evan Bashir was dead as well after being shot by police responding to the scene. In the aftermath, Kym's family was left to wonder why this all happened, and they asked themselves if they could have done anything to prevent this terrible act of domestic violence. In this episode. Chelsea and Julianna discuss the tragic events of that day, and their efforts to fight for the lives of everyone in the home that day. They also discuss their newest efforts to prevent domestic violence and help others escape Kym's fate.If you or someone you know is in danger due to domestic violence you can call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800.799.SAFE (7233). You can also call RAINN (the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network)'s National Sexual Assault Hotline at 800.656.HOPE (4673).A message from Kym's Sister, Chelsea:Hello there!I apologize for the delay in getting this information to you! Hopefully I'm not too late! A little recap about our cause:We are a network of Family Oriented Resources for the Young, Old & Under-served. We help connect people to the community resources best suited to meet their specific needs. We work with resource providers through other organizations, businesses, and individuals who offer programs and services aligned with our mission to reduce violence, heal trauma and support people through major life transitions. KYMfest is a family festival that brings these resources to the people along with local businesses, influential speakers, kids activities and performing artists for a day of learning, connection and fun.#KindYourMind is our motto. An adaptation of Kym's name, "Kind Your Mind" reminds people to adopt kindness over violence, and have compassion and grace for everyone's healing process including your own. We promote a shift away from the judgement, blame and shame that often hinders people in seeking help and instead bringing mindfulness and love into the forefront of our way of being. After the murder of Kym, we realized the truth behind the saying, "hurt people hurt people" and decided to do what we can to break the stigmas around mental and emotional health. Evan felt hopeless, defeated and downright worthless to himself and others. He had a long history of being an outcast of his family, suffering childhood traumas, struggling with mental illness and addiction through his adult life, and his severe lack of ability to keep a job or make major life accomplishments. The stress of his new role as father to Kym's son was overwhelming. Without a network of support and community care behind him, and with the weight of his lifestyle and negative behaviors catching up to him, the stress finally broke him. He got violent, she got out. He decided he couldn't live without her. He took her out with him in a tragic suicide mission. The aftermath of this unexpected turn of events left our family reeling and overwhelmed. But one thing I knew was that people are being pushed every day to this breaking point due to a high amount of compounded stress and very little outlets. We hope to be an outlet and an avenue to a better life. Healing is not a one-size-fits-all process. For You Network aims to meet people where they are in their journey and bridge the gap between how they can access what resources are out there. We are here to help. We are here for you!Although we are Idaho-based right now, I hope to be able to expand this model of community care to the broader nation and world so that everyone might gain the access and awareness to what's available to support them through major life transitions. Here are the best ways to get involved in our nonprofit organization, For You Network, Inc. and our annual outreach event, KYMfest (aka the KindYourMind Festival) and our #KindYourMind MovementLinks of importance: Our organization's website is coming this summer! see our basic landing page here-- www.ForYouNetwork.orgwww.KYMfest.com shares details about the upcoming in-person (socially distanced/drive-thru) festival on August 8th ways to donate: through paypal--- paypal.me/kindyourmind ORhttps://paypal.me/kindyourmind?locale.x=en_US Or by direct deposit into our For You Network, Inc. By popular listener suggestion, this week, Drewby and Yergy revisit the tragic case of Junko Furuta. She would have turned 50 years old this year. If you see something, say something. Like the cases of Sylvia Likens, Shanda Sharer, Suzanne Capper, and Kitty Genovese, we need to end bystander apathy. During this pandemic, a virus isn't the only thing that has spread rapidly. Domestic violence hotlines are breaking new records, lighting up both globally and nationally. On this podcast episode Angie McIlquham, Director of Sexual Assault Victim Services at The Bridge to Hope breaks down the direct correlation between COVID-19 life and these alarming new statistics, explaining why this is “prime time” for an abuser. Angie also breaks down privilege and asks us all to check ours, seeking to understand how hard it is for a victim of physical or sexual violence to leave an abusive situation and how to engage with a victim in a way that empowers, rather than seeks to control them the same as an abuser would. If you want to get ahold of Angie or Bridge to Hope contact their non emergency number 715-235-9074 or by calling their 24 Hour Hotline: 1-800-924-9918 or text 715-505-3640. According to RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network), a sexual assault occurs every 73 seconds in the United States. For victims of sexual assault, the effects can be long-term, with the likelihood of suicide, depressive thoughts, and/or PTSD symptoms increasing after an assault. Yet, the majority of victims do not report their rapes, and the majority of assailants will not be brought to justice—for every 1000 assaults, 995 perpetrators will not serve jail or prison sentences. Today's special guest, Karen Stefano knows these statistics too well, as both the victim of an assault and as a lawyer. As she was working on her book What a Body Remembers, she was shocked by how many other women shared with her that they, too, had been victims of assault. “And they would share their own story, and that simple act of sharing would unburden them, I believe,” Stefano explains. Karen chronicles the journey to reclaim her life after her sexual assault in her memoir. As a nineteen-year-old sophomore at UC Berkeley in 1984, she leaves her job as a uniformed campus police aide, walks home alone in darkness, and is assaulted by a man at knife-point. Karen Stefano is a JD/MBA with more than twenty years of complex litigation experience and has written extensively on the topics of sexual assault and the criminal justice system. She has the unique experience of having lived inside the criminal justice system from virtually every angle—working in law enforcement, a District Attorney's office, and for a federal judge; as a victim of sexual assault (and testifying at trial against her attacker); of having once been nearly charged with a felony herself; and years later, seemingly paradoxically, becoming a criminal defense attorney.
CONTENT WARNING: This episode includes discussion of sexual assault, child molestation, and domestic violence. Listener discretion is advised. R. Kelly has been an R&B superstar for two decades, with hit songs such as "I Believe I Can Fly" and "I Wish," and winning several music awards, including three Grammys. But while Kelly has enjoyed mainstream success, throughout his career, he has been plagued by allegations of sexual involvement with underage girls and inappropriate, abusive relationships with women and girls. Recently, the documentary miniseries "Surviving R. Kelly" was released on Lifetime, discussing allegations of Kelly's sexual misconduct, including more recent allegations that he keeps women and girls captive in an abusive "sex cult." The documentary featured interviews with several accusers, family members of alleged victims, former business and personal associates, and family members. R. Kelly has not been convicted of any crime related to the sexual misconduct and abuse allegations, and he has denied all accusations. In this episode, Jaye discusses the R. Kelly documentary with her brother, the author of Gods of Life and co-owner of Shining Otaku Comics, Ervin Johnson II. Jaye and Ervin talk about Kelly's history, the #MeToo movement, and women's empowerment. The episode also includes a "palate cleanser" segment where they discuss manga (Japanese comics), Shining Otaku, and Gods of Life. I want to let you know that this week's episode addresses some upsetting topics. It wasn't until his parents died that J. Ronald M. York learned about accusations of childhood sexual abuse in his family. Letters in a box in his father's garage finally revealed the terrible secrets that his family had kept from him his entire adult life. And in turn, that started his process for dealing with the secrets of his own abuse that he'd been carrying for years. These are hard things to talk about -- but they're important to acknowledge and address. If you need to talk to someone about sexual assault, contact the National Sexual Assault Telephone Hotline at 800-656-HOPE, or connect with the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network at RAINN.org.
Brooke welcomes back one of the most informative, interesting guests we've ever had, sex and relationship expert Dr. Emily Morse. Emily is the host of the “Sex With Emily” podcast and is a frequent contributor and expert for television and radio shows. Brooke and Emily talk in detail about Harvey Weinstein, the #MeToo movement and the broader issues of sexual harassment, abuse and trauma that are at the forefront of our national conversation. Brooke and Emily both share their own personal experiences with inappropriate interactions in the workplace and in their private lives. Women are so used to experiencing and brushing off these episodes because of fear of the social cost that the conversation has been pushed to the sidelines until now when these stories have cracked open the door in a new and powerful way. They also talk about ways to respond in the moment when someone does or says something inappropriate. Brooke and Emily also answer listener questions about love, attraction, sex, hormones, taboos and naughty toys. If you or someone you care about has experienced sexual assault, trauma or abuse, call RAINN – the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network at 1-800-656-HOPE (4673). Find Brooke on social media at @BrookeBurke and Dr. Emily at @SexWithEmily. The episode is produced by David Harte and edited by Gabe Harder. Music provided by WouldWork Sound.
