Saint of the Day
Saint Tamara (Tamar), Queen of Georgia (1212) - May 1

'Saint Tamara was the only child of King George III. Upon his death in 1184, she became Queen at the age of twenty-four. Despite her youth, she ruled the country with such wisdom and godliness — leading it to unprecedented military triumphs over the neighboring Moslem countries in defence of her kingdom, fostering arts and letters, and zealously strengthening Orthodoxy — that her reign is known as the Golden Age of Georgia. After her coronation, she convoked a local council to correct disorders in church life. When the bishops had assembled from all parts of her kingdom, she, like Saint Constantine at the First Ecumenical Council, honoured them as if she were a commoner, and they Angels of God; exhorting them to establish righteousness and redress abuses, she said in her humility, "Do away with every wickedness, beginning with me, for the prerogative of the throne is in no wise that of making war against God." Saint Tamara called herself "the father of orphans and the judge of widows," and her contemporaries called her "King" instead of "Queen." She herself led her army against the Moslems and fearlessly defeated them; because of the reverence that even the enemies of Georgia had for her, entire mountain tribes renounced Islam and were baptized. She built countless churches and monasteries throughout her kingdom, and was a benefactress also to the Holy Land, Mount Athos, and holy places in Greece and Cyprus. She has always been much beloved by her people, who have memorialized her meekness, wisdom, piety, obedience, and peace-loving nature in innumerable legends, ballads, and songs; the poem written in her honor by Shota Rustaveli, "The Knight of the Panther Skin," is the masterpiece of Georgian literature. The great Queen Tamara departed the earthly kingdom for the heavenly in the year 1212.' (Great Horologion)

Jesus Christ is King, now, over every nations and ethnicity. He is the ruling and reigning monarch of all, including those in rebellion to Him, like the Jews and atheists and Moslems. This understanding must re-enter the Church; our Judeo-Christian pastors have surrendered without shots being fire.     "Who would not fear You, O King of the nations? Indeed it is Your due! For among all the wise men of the nations And in all their kingdoms, There is none like You. " Jeremiah 10:7   “And to Him was given dominion, Glory and a kingdom, That all the peoples, nations and men of every language Might serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion Which will not pass away; And His kingdom is one Which will not be destroyed." Daniel 7:14 Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Your inheritance, And the very ends of the earth as Your possession. ‘You shall break them with a rod of iron, You shall shatter them like earthenware.'” Now therefore, O kings, show discernment; Take warning, O judges of the earth. Worship the Lord with reverence And rejoice with trembling. Do homage to the Son, that He not become angry, and you perish in the way, For His wrath may soon be kindled. How blessed are all who take refuge in Him! Psalm 2:8-12 "In the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which will never be destroyed, and that kingdom will not be left for another people; it will crush and put an end to all these kingdoms, but it will itself endure forever." Daniel 2:44 "Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth." Revelation 1:15   "And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war. His eyes are a flame of fire, and on His head are many diadems; and He has a name written on Him which no one knows except Himself. He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. And the armies which are in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, were following Him on white horses. From His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty.  And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.” Then I saw an angel standing in the sun, and he cried out with a loud voice, saying to all the birds which fly in midheaven, “Come, assemble for the great supper of God, 18 so that you may eat the flesh of kings and the flesh of commanders and the flesh of mighty men and the flesh of horses and of those who sit on them and the flesh of all men, both free men and slaves, and small and great.” . . . (21) And the rest were killed with the sword which came from the mouth of Him who sat on the horse, and all the birds were filled with their flesh." Last time we spoke about the complicated story of Xinjiang. Xinjiang, though part of China since the Han dynasty, has a distinct cultural and geographic identity aligned more with Central Asia than China's east. Its remote, mountainous landscapes divide its regions and isolate its ethnic groups, which include Uyghurs, Kazakhs, and Hui Muslims. Yang Zengxin, Xinjiang's Republican governor, ruled with shrewd, divisive tactics, maintaining peace by balancing loyalties but alienating many. His rule ended in 1928, when an ambitious subordinate, Fan Yaonan, assassinated him, marking a turning point. Yang attended a banquet hosted by Fan, where disguised soldiers fired on him, mortally wounding him. Fan seized power but was soon defeated and executed by Jin, who succeeded Yang as ruler of Xinjiang. Jin enforced strict policies, favoring Han Chinese officials and worsening the economy. He raised taxes, restricted Muslim customs, and monopolized industries. His annexation of the Kumul Khanate in 1931 incited unrest among the local Uyghurs, setting the stage for rebellion.   #132 The Beginning of the Kumul Rebellion Welcome to the Fall and Rise of China Podcast, I am your dutiful host Craig Watson. So last we left off, things had reached a boiling point in Kumul. The explosion at Kumul would begin mostly as a result of a religious and cultural slight against the Muslim population both Turkic speaking and Tungan. They became offended and banded together against the Chinese officials. As a result of the new administration and annexation of the Kumul Khanate, a young Han named Chang Mu from Gansu, was appointed tax collector and chief of police over the small village of Xiaopu, lying due north of Kumul. According to the Nanjing official Wu Aichen “this Chang Mu was a 'wastrel' whose conduct soon became a public scandal”. In early 1931, Chang Mu met a pretty Turkic Muslim girl in Xiaopu and tried to force her father, a Uyghur called Salih, to give him her hand in marriage. Now for those unaware shari law specifically prohibits marriage between Muslim women and men of other religions. What followed is described in two differing accounts. The first account has it that on April 4th of 1931, Chang Mu was invited to eat at the girls house, allegedly in honor of the forthcoming wedding. During the dinner, Chang Mu was attacked by Uyghur's and slaughtered alongside 32 members of his personal bodyguard. It was further implied by our friend Wu Aichen, Chang Mu had already seduced the girl and that the ulama, those being islamic scholars who act as a sort of authority under shari law, upon discovering so, took it upon themselves to correct the situation. On the night of the proposed ceremony a mob appeared in the streets of Xiaopu. Chang Mu and his guard detail were already thoroughly drunk and easily overcome by the pissed off Uyghurs. All were killed, including the poor Uyghur girl. The Uyghurs then took 30 rifles from the dead and turned their attention towards the Gansu Chinese who were said to number in about a hundred families in the area. All of them were massacred and “had their heads buried in the soil of their farms”. Following this the Uyghurs marched upon the Chinese outposts at Tuluhu and Laimahe killing their garrisons and tax collectors while acquiring even more weapons. Better armed, the Uyghurs elected to make a move against Kumul. Kumul held an overwhelming Uyghur majority and easily fell into the hands of the rebels with little to no fighting. Most of the Han fled into the fortified Old City barring its gates. The Han caught outside the Old City were massacred brutally. Soon the rebel forces controlled Kumul's Muslim part of the city and the surrounding countryside, but the provincial forces remained secure within the Old city and its key arsenal. It is unclear whether the Xiaopu incident was carefully planned prior or simply just came into being. Regardless it was a spark that ignited a much larger rebellion. According to Mildred Cable and Francesca French, two members of the China inland Mission, who resided in Xiaopu at the time, it was indeed a systematically planned rebellion. “While officials surreptitiously transferred their wealth to a place of safety, the instigators of trouble were equally persistent in their secret preparations for war. Camels and mules were requisitioned to transport weapons, ammunition and stocks of food over little-known tracks, that they might be stored in mountain caves known only to the few. Steady streams ofsmall caravans carrying ammunition to the mountains came from the South Road, from Tunhwang and across the most lonely tracks of the desert connecting Kansu with Barku!. All these converged on the Khan's summer palace grounds in AraHim, and the stronghold of Bardash was stocked with huge supplies of food and firearms”. Yulbars Khan, the former chancellor of Maqsud Shah claimed he was in the Tien Shah escaping heat when the fighting began. Many speculate he had a hand in planning the uprising. Cable and French argued the Tungan population of Kumul also joined the rebellion early on. The insurgents of Kumul were quickly joined by neighboring Kirhiz of the Karlik Tagh who also held grievances against Jin as he had imposed Chinese officials upon them in 1929. According to Wu Aichen the Barkul and Kazakhs in the area also joined the rebellion. Thus Jin had succeeded in alienating the Turkic speaking peoples of northeastern Xinjiang now had a full scale Muslim rising on his hands.  Jin reacted with a strong show of force despite his Commissioner of Education Liu Wenlung and Commissioner for Reconstruction Yen Yushan both arguing for a policy of conciliation. Jin ordered troops to crack down on the rebels without mercy. Meanwhile back in Kumul the rebels were unable to breach the Old City so they fanned out into the countryside hunting Han settlers and soldiers down. According to the British Vice Consul General at Kashgar, R.P Watts, an initial detachment of 300 troops sent by Jin relieved Kumul Old City were ambushed and killed nearly to a man. Its also implied they had lost so easily because many of them were sleeping off the effects of opium. Despite the initial success, the rebels were unable to prevent provincial forces led by Zhu Juiqi, the Taoyin of Aksu from relieving the Old City. By late April the siege was lifted, Zhu Juiqi occupied the Old City and ordered his second in command Xiong Fayu to occupy Kumul's Muslim quarters. The rebels still controlled the countryside and were harassing Zhu's forces whenever they strayed a bit too far from their forts, but overall were not much of a match. Meanwhile Chinese troops under the leadership of Xiong Fayu began a series of reprisal massacres against Muslim civilians in Kumul and the surrounding villages. The Uyghur leaders quickly determined they needed external help in their rebellion against Jin. According to testimony from Yulbars Khan, they sent an appeal to the KMT government in Nanjing. Then in June of 1931 Yulbars was chosen, most likely because he was fluent in Mandarin, to head out secretly to Nanjing to carry the appeal. Along the way, Yulbars went to Suzhou to meet with Ma Chongying, known as the youngest and most extreme of the 5 Ma Tungan warlords. Ma Chongying was a Gansu native. Very little is known about his early years nor about his father, but he shared the same paternal grandfather of the Gansu/Qinghai warlords Ma Puqing and Ma Pufang. He was also distantly related to the Gansu/Ningxia warlords Ma Hongkuei and Ma Hungpin. Altogether the 5 were known as the 5 Ma warlord clique. Ma Congying entered military service in 1924 at the age of 14 when he joined a local Muslim militia. A year later the Guominjun forces of Feng Yuxiang invaded Gansu, but the Tungan warlords of western Gansu remained for the most part untouched. Ma Chongying became an officer for the forces of his uncle Ma Kechong and laid a siege and captured the important city of Huzhou on his own initiative. His troops easily defeated reinforcements sent to relieve the city under the command of Ma Lin. With this great victory, at the age of 16, Ma Chongying earned the reputation of a military genius and the nickname Ga Ssuling or “little commander”. His triumph would be short lived however for his superior Ma Kuchung had not ordered the seizure of Huzhou and dismissed his nephew for insubordination. Thus Ma Chongying took his men to Xining in Qinghai and there began building a private army.  The Guominjun eventually left Gansu after devastating it. In 1927 the northwestern parts of Gansu was hit by a massive earthquake and this combined with Feng Yuxiang's regional commander Liu Yufen using much of its land for opium cultivation led to a mass famine. In the spring of 1928, the northwestern Tungans began a revolt against the Guominjun led by the Muslim General Ma Tingxiang. Ma Chongying tossed his lot into the fighting leading to three successive attacks against the Guominjun at Huzhou. According to Robert Ekvall, an American traveler in the region “The revolt had by this time assumed all the aspects of a holy war. Chanting prayers, forty or fifty thousand fighters went into battle with fanatical zeal ... the young rebel leader Ma Chong-ing [sic] seemed to bear a charmed life and by his reckless courage gained the utmost in obedience and devotion from his ruffian troops. The Chinese were panic-stricken at the desperate courage of the Moslems, but eventually, by machine gun fire and light artillery, proved superior”. Alongside this American diplomats reported that the famine and war in Gansu had reduced many to cannibalism with a possible two million people dying between 1926-1929. One of the many to die was Ma Chongyings father who was executed by Liu Yufen as a reprisal against him for his actions in 1929.  That year Ma Chongying had strengthened his position by defeating several Guominjun forces. He traveled to Nanjing where he enrolled briefly at the military academy there. Rumors had it there he offered his services to the KMT on the understanding that if he could win control over Xinjiang that they recognize him. After departing Nanjing he traveled to Chongwei along the Yellow River where he joined his army before marching across the southern friends of the Ala Shan desert to head into northwestern Gansu. There he seized control over 4 districts; Kanzhou, Suzhou, Anxi and Tunhuang. Thus by the time of the Kumul uprising in April of 1931, Ma Chongying had established himself the Tungan warlord over northwestern Gansu. In June of that year, Yulbars Khan visited him at Suzhou while enroute to Nanjing. After a dinner, Ma Chongying asked Yulbars what was going on with the Kumul rebellion and the state of Kumul. Ma Congying then proceeded to criticize Jin Shujen whom he thought was unfit to govern Xinjiang. Upon hearing this Yulbars disclosed why he was going to Nanjing. Yulbars told him that many in Gansu did not support Jin and that he was appealing to Nanjing to see if Jin could be replaced with a new governor. Ma Chongying sat silently for some time before asking if Yulbar's had any personal contacts in Nanjing, to which he replied he did not. He then advised Yulbars to not go to Nanjing because of three reasons: 1) The Kuomintang had just completed its Northern Expedition and was in need of stability, so it was not in a position to replace its frontier governors, despite any shortcomings they had.2) Even if the Nanking government agreed to remove Chin Shu-jen, implementing the decision would likely take two or three years due to the vast distances involved. 3) Furthermore, Chin's greed would likely make him unwilling to step down, and he might even seek support from a foreign power to secure his position. Under these conditions, Sinkiang could potentially come under foreign control. The points were sound, however Yulbars stated the people had sent him to Nanjing, what should he do if he failed? Ma Congying replied “I have a way ... I can meet the needs of the Uighurs of Ha-mi ... In the name of Muslim brotherhood, I shall take my army into Sinkiang. First I shall alleviate the suffering of the Uighurs of Ha-mi, then I shall drive Chin Shu-jen from the stage by force of arms.” A lot of this is conjecture, as it would seem impossible Ma Chongying spontaneously decided to invade Xinjiang over dinner. Ma Chongying was interested in the Kumul uprising long before the arrival of Yulbars in Suzhou and based on other sources it seems Yulbars was well aware of this prior to his visit. Ma Chongying most likely had decent information on the political ongoings of Xinjiang as two Muslim Turks from Istanbul had traveled to northwestern Gansu from Urumqi in early 1931 and entered Ma Chongying's military HQ. One was Kamal Kaya Efendi who went on to become his chief of staff. Ma Chongying was also gun running to places like Kumul, meaning he would have a lot of intel. Ma Chongyings powerbase in Kanzhou was also temporary. As pointing out by Mildred Cable and Francesca French “based on the assumption of the paralysing effect of frightfulness in action, and as a method of temporary invasion it answered his purpose well, but it never served him as a basis of true conquest, nor did he ever establish rule over one single acre of the land which he invaded. His was the method of the locust. . . and his army was always viewed as a plague. It came, it devoured, and when it had passed over, the patient, constructively minded peasants instantly began to repair the damage done to their fields, and to begetsons to replace those who had been swept away in his train” In 1931 Ma Chongyings private army was not a large one, it was perhaps no more than 1000 men and given the account of Mildred Cable and Francesca French, his army had to roam around like locusts to survive. Ma Chongying was a very ambitious and young warlord who like many in this part of China dreamed of carving out a Muslim empire in central asia. In the spring of 1931, Ma Chongying had only two possible directions to take. One was through China proper where he would most likely face his uncle Ma Pufang, whom at the time he was in this sort of propaganda war with. The other was to go through Xinjiang, where it seemed he could receive aid from other Muslim groups seeking to be rid of Jin Shujen. Ma Chongying assembled a force of 500 Tungan cavalry and swiftly crossed the desert between Anxi and Kumul during the full heat of midsummer, arriving in the oasis on the 28th of June, at around the same time as the French Citroen expedition. The French Citroen expedition got to see an encounter between Ma Chongyings Tungan Cavalry and some Chinese machine gun detachment outside of the village of Yikoshu. The French account indicated the Chinese forces also had some Mongol soldiers with them decisively beating back the Tungan riders. After witnessing this the French headed for Kumul's Old City which they found in a state of chaos. Everyone within the city was busy organizing defenses. The French were taken immediately to the local Chinese commander, Zhu Juichih. As they made their way they could see anxious Muslims peering out of their windows and on telegraph poles were heads, hearts and livers, most likely from captured insurgents. Commander Zhu gave the French permission to continue to Urumqi, stating they could do so at their own risk. Most of the French departed on July 1st, leaving behind 3 members at the Old City who would become eyewitnesses to Ma Chongyings attack.  On July 3rd, Ma Chongying dispatched two messangers to Zhu Juichich baring the following message. “By order of the National Government of China I have been appointed commander-in-chief of all military forces of Kansu and Sinkiang. Having assumed my new occasional pistol shot could be heard as hand-to-hand fighting began on the wall Its self ... Just when the place seemed to be doomed a machine gun, which up to this had been silent ... suddenly came to life. Emplaced in a blockhouse flanking the wall, It opened fire, mowing down the assault, and the glacis was soon cleared except for heaps of corpses”.  Ma Chongyings Tungan cavalry force lacked heavy artillery necessary to breach the Old city walls. Three separate attacks were made on the night of the 3rd, all beaten back. Zhu Juichih, a military veteran had zero intention of surrendering to the so called “little commander” whom he dismissed as a “thieving cub”. Ma Chongying seemed to have little stomach for siege warfare so on the 5th he led a large portion of his Tungan cavalry away from Kumul Old City. By doing so he had left roughly 1000 Uyghur insurgents with a handful of Tungans to continue a siege against the Kumul Old City who had 2000 provincial troops. Zhu Juichih was unaware of Ma Chongyings true purpose so he elected not to sortie fearing a trap. Meanwhile Ma Congying led his riders over the Karlik Tagh to Barkul surprising its defenders. Barkul would end up surrendering without much of a struggle. The commander at Barkul named Hedin handed over 2000 rifles and opened the Barkul arsenal to Ma Chongying. Ma Chongying left a hundred man garrison to capture the town as he turned south. According to Wu Aichen, the sudden small victories of the young commander emboldened other groups to join his cause such as the Kazakhs and Tungans north of Karlik Tagh. By mid-July Muslim insurgents were effectively controlling the entire territory of the Old Kumul Khanate, from Xingxingxia to Iwanquan. Groups of invading Tungans from Gansu formed an alliance with the Muslims of Xinjiang, notably from Xingxingxia and Barkul to hold the siege of Kumul Old City. Ma Chongying seemed to also hold the full support of indigenous Muslims of the area whether it be Hazakh, Kirghiz, Uyghur or Xinjiang Tungans.  Jin Shujen's received word of the young commander leading a force of Tungan cavalry attacking various places. It seemed his next target was to be Qiqiaoqing. Jin appointed his chief secretary, Lu Xiaozu to be his commander in chief of the provincial forces; Tu Qikuo and Sheng Shihtsai were to be his joint chiefs of staff. Lu Xiaozu was a younger brother to Jin Shujen, a civilian with little to no military experience and was the bitter rival of the current commissioner for military affairs at Urumqi, Jin Shuxin. Lu Xiaozu mustered a force roughly 1000 strong of men almost all lacking any military training or experience. They were immediately tossed over to Qiqiaoqing with orders to halt the Tungan advance pending further reinforcements. Shortly after their arrival, the troops were met by a surprise night attack and killed nearly to a man. Their commander Tu Qikuo committed suicide in disgrace. According to Kamal Kaya Efendi, the Tungans were led personally by Ma CHongying during the daring attack. He had taken his forces into the oasis through little known trails in Karlik Tagh and Bogdo Ula after his capture of Barkul.  Following this victory, Ma Chongying returned to Kumul Old City to see if the siege was providing any results. This was a rather bizarre decision as Jin Shujens capital of Urumqi was basically open for the taking, but perhaps the young commander had overestimated his enemy. When Ma Congying arrived at Kumul Old City, the besiegers' morale improved greatly. Between July 3rd to October 16th over 43 attacks had been levied against the Chinese garrison. The Tungans dug trenches and built barricades trying to storm the walls. Meanwhile within the old city walls the besieged people were forced to eat their camels, horses and mules to survive. By October 1st the defenders were reduced to a ration of 750 grammes of kaoliang floor per day and were expected to run out by the end of the month. Likewise ammunition was running low, prompting Zhu Juichih to resort to more archaic weapons such as fire arrows and Dao swords that the men had found preserved in the arsenal going back to the time of Zuo Zungtang's campaign in the 19th century. One of the French expeditionaries reported the only thing being sold in the bazaars was opium. One could not even obtain oil as it was boiled and hurled over the walls at the attackers. The Tungans attempted numerous times to breach the walls using mines, but they lacked sufficient powder to create large enough explosions. On one occasion a breach was made in the walls, but the defenders were quickly able to block the hole with wool before the attackers could get through. Afterwards a ditch was dug around the walls and flooded so the Tungan trenches would be unable to continue mining. Siege warfare is neat isn't it? Horrible to be sure, but so much ingenuity. By Mid-October the defenders were very desperate. According to the French expeditionaries inside after 108 days of siege, the defenders sortied out of the town on October 16th and tried to reach Urumqi. “What sustained the men was opium. They could not have held out without it, and so long as it lasted and no strenuous effort was demanded of them, they could get along on practically no food. At night the opium lamps of the sentries could be seen sparkling like little stars the length of the ramparts. The whole garrison was in fact intoxicated. It was fantastic!” It is quite probable the defenders chose to make a break for it because they were a majority Han Chinese and greatly feared their fate if the Tungans got in. If you know Islamic history, well you know. Ma Chongying had refused any terms other than unconditional surrender and given the feelings of Kumuls Muslim insurgents, it seemed highly unlikely any prisoners would be taken. Regardless, the siege had delayed the Tungans for a long time, allowing Jin Shujen to hastily organize provincial forces at Urumqi. After his first military campaign had failed horrendously, Jin now orderedTsetsen Puntsag Gegeen, the “living Buddha” of Xinjiang of the Torgut Mongols to lead his famous Torgut Cavalry regiment against the Tungans at Kumul. The Turgot troops were by far the best available at the time to Jin, and the most capable to go one on one with Tungan cavalry. However Tsetsen Puntsag Gegeen was one of the many Torguts who had grievances with Jin over his policy of enforcing Han Chinese officials upon his people to take positions of leadership. Moreover a plot had recently been discovered that one of his subordinates had been paid off to assassinate him. Tsetsen Puntsag Gegeen suspected Jin Shujen to be the culprit to the plot and when the said assassins fled to Urumqi, Jin refused to hand them over for justice, all but confirmed his suspicions.  Thus Tsetsen Puntsag Gegeen refused to become involved in the war over Kumul and instead took his forces to Kara Shahr as a demonstration of power. Lacking sufficient numbers or reliable Han Chinese troops, Jin turned next to the White Russian community. Lu Xiaozu who proved himself an imbecile at military matters was replaced with Chang Peiyuan, the Military commander of the Ili Region which also happened to be the region where most White Russians resided. Chang Peiyuan went to work rallying White Russian volunteers who more or less refused to fight for the Chinese, until Jin threatened to repatriate them to Stalin's USSR. In late September Chang Peiyuan had a force headed by 250 White Russians under the leadership of Colonel Pappengut with the mission of relieving Kumul Old City. During this time Ma Chongying decided to march upon the capital, drawing most of his Tungan cavalry away from Kumul heading westwards along the Qiqiaoqing road. This took him directly into the path of the advancing White Russians who began skirmishing around the village of Liaotun. At some point Ma Chongying was seriously wounded, shot through both of his legs. Despite this both sides had negligible casualties. Yet as a result of his grievous injury a large portion of Ma Congying's Tungan riders retreated back into northwestern Gansu. Rumor has it, at this time Ma Congying was bought off by Jin Shujen, regardless he had to take a prolonged time to recuperate and was away from the front lines. Once safely across the Gansu-Xinjiang frontier, Ma Chongying handed control of his four districts of Tunhuang, Anxi, Yumen and Suzhou to his uncle Ma Pufang. Meanwhile Chang Peiyuans forces with Pappenguts White Russians in the spearhead were still advancing towards Kumul Old City. They managed to relieve it on November 1st. The victorious Chinese troops sacked Kumul as a reward, that was denied to the White Russian forces. The provincial troops then performed a systematic destruction of large parts of Kumul, levelling entire villages and terrorizing the population. Zhu Juichih had returned to Urumqi, but his Lt Xing Fayu had remained at Kumul and began a series of mass executions. The reprisals were so heinous, all of the Uyghurs who had remained neutral during the ordeal threw their lot in with the rebellion. Refugees began to pour westwards towards Turfan while Uyghur insurgents withdrew to Karlik Tagh, notably to their well stocked mountain fort at Bardash. Those who went to Bardash unleashed a guerilla war against Jin troops in collaboration with Ma Chongyings Tungans who awaited their leader in Xinjiang. A communication network led from Bardash and Anxi for this purpose. While Ma Chongying was licking his wounds he reorganized his forces. The Rebellion had only just begun.

Under Narendra Modi, India has changed dramatically. As the world attempts to grapple with its trajectory towards authoritarianism and a 'Hindu Rashtra' (Hindu State), little attention has been paid to the linkages between Modi's India and the governments from which it has drawn inspiration, as well as military and technical support. India once called Zionism racism, but, as Azad Essa argues, the state of Israel has increasingly become a cornerstone of India's foreign policy. Looking to replicate the 'ethnic state' in the image of Israel in policy and practice, the annexation of Kashmir increasingly resembles Israel's settler-colonial project of the occupied West Bank. The ideological and political linkages between the two states are alarming; their brands of ethnonationalism deeply intertwined. Hostile Homelands: The New Alliance Between India and Israel (Pluto Press, 2023) puts India's relationship with Israel in its historical context, looking at the origins of Zionism and Hindutva; India's changing position on Palestine; and the countries' growing military-industrial relationship from the 1990s. Lucid and persuasive, Essa demonstrates that the India-Israel alliance spells significant consequences for democracy, the rule of law and justice worldwide. Azad Essa is an award-winning journalist and author based between Johannesburg and New York City. He is currently a senior reporter for Middle East Eye covering American foreign policy, Islamophobia and race in the US. Author. poet, intellectual, Omar Imady is an uncommon collection of many things – poet, historian, novelist, Syrian, American, exile, Sufi, ‘Alan Wattsian', cat lover, avid coffee drinker, insatiable gastronome – all of which find expression in his growing repertoire of eclectic fiction. He is the author of multiple books, including The Gospel of Damascus, a 2012 Book of the Year Award finalist, and When Her Hand Moves, a collection of three controversial, thought-provoking novellas. His forthcoming novels dig ever deeper into the human experience of alienation and the quest for meaning in a world increasingly hostile to answers.  His recent book, Divine Pronouns, grows out of a 40 year personal journal to reconcile his love for the Moslem faith, the Islamic sacred book, the Quran, and his and other Moslems struggle with some of the Quran's verses.  The cover notes describe the work thusly:Despite centuries of scholarly contributions on the Quran,  unprecedented numbers of Muslims find the Quran to be unrelatable in both its wording and in how it has been explained. Existing approaches to interpretation offer little to fall upon when they encounter a verse which appears to go against their deeply held ethical sensibilities, often leaving them with little choice other than to suffer in silence, leave in protest, or master the art of spiritual disassociation."In response to these challenges, this work attempts to arrive at new approach to reading and understanding the Quran. It presents a hermeneutical framework, derived from the wording of the Quran itself, through which verses are categorised according to the presence and absence of pronouns used to refer to God and to specific audiences. In this work, first in its series, this new framework is used to identify verses containing principles which can be described as definitive; timeless, universal, and applicable regardless of context."A prolific writer, Imady is the author of Erasures (2024), winner of the Literary Titan Gold Award, Catfishing Caitlyn (2023) and The Celest Experiment (2022), both recipients of the Literary Titan Silver Award, Transference (2022), a Pushcart Prize nominee (Litro Magazine), When Her Hand Moves (2022), a collection of three novellas, and The Gospel of Damascus, a Book of the Year Award (BOTYA) finalist (2012), published in three English editions, and subsequently translated into Arabic, French and Spanish. The novel weaves Jewish, Christian, and Muslim traditions to tell the story of a Damascene man who becomes totally consumed with the idea that Damascus is the site of the Second Coming of Jesus.Imady is also the author, and coauthor, of several works on Syria and Sufism, including: An Inside Story of Modern Syria: The Unauthorized Biography of a Damascene Reformer (2023), Historical Dictionary of Syria Fourth Edition (2021), Syria at War, Eight Years On (2020), Sufism and the Preservation of Syrian Spiritual Identity (2020), The Weaponization of Syria's Reconstruction (2019), The Syrian Uprising Domestic Origins and Early Trajectory (2018), Syria's Reconciliation Agreements (2017), Organisationally Secular: Damascene Islamist Movements and the Syrian Uprising (2016), Syria at War, Five Years On (2016),  Civil Resistance in the Syrian Uprising: From Democratic Transition to Sectarian Civil War (2016), How a microfinance network could have preempted the Syrian uprising (2014), When You're Shoved from the Right, Look to Your Left: Metaphors of Islamic Humanism (2005),  The Rise and Fall of Muslim Civil Society (2005), and Sanduq: A Microfinance Innovation in Jabal Al-Hoss, Syria (2003).

Secret Place of the Most High (audio) David Eells – 5/22/24 There is a place of safety in Christ for our body as well as our soul. Isaiah 54:17 No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of Jehovah, and their righteousness which is of me, saith Jehovah. Jesus demonstrated what it is to be delivered from the curse for us. He said, “No man takes my life.” When He spoke of His sacrifice so we could have this benefit He said, “I lay it down.”) When he was backed up to a cliff by a crowd of angry people, He walked through the midst of them unharmed. Gal 3:13-14 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us; for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:  14  that upon the Gentiles might come the blessing of Abraham in Christ Jesus… Elisha Knew this. 2Ki 6:15-18  And when the servant of the man of God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, a host with horses and chariots was round about the city. And his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! how shall we do?  16  And he answered, Fear not; for they that are with us are more than they that are with them.  17  And Elisha prayed, and said, Jehovah, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And Jehovah opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.  18  And when they (The Syrian beast Army. We have a beast army.) came down to him, Elisha prayed unto Jehovah, and said, Smite this people, I pray thee, with blindness. And he smote them with blindness according to the word of Elisha. They couldn't be seen by the beast. The men of Sodom were smitten blind when they threatened Lot. You say, like all the dead religions, that God doesn't do this anymore? In a dream the Lord showed me I would have access to the real President and He gave me a gift to do this. He has complete access to the NSA, which in known to have everything about everybody. He said to me, “David, there is something I don't understand. Why we cannot find you anywhere.” I said, “Mr. President the angels are hiding me as they told me many times. I am not hiding from you but the DS.” And Fathers protection is over those who associate with me too, although the wicked are afraid to do that for they are dying as many verses proclaim. Psa.91:1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of Jehovah, He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in whom I trust. 3 For he will deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, And from the deadly pestilence. 4 He will cover thee with his pinions, And under his wings shalt thou take refuge: His is a truth shield and a buckler. 5 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night, Nor for the arrow that flieth by day; 6 For the pestilence that walketh in darkness, Nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. 7 A thousand shall fall at thy side, And ten thousand at thy right hand; But it shall not come nigh thee. 8 Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold, And see the reward of the wicked. Are we seeing their reward? 9 For thou, O Jehovah, art my refuge! Thou hast made the Most High thy habitation; 10 There shall no evil befall thee, Neither shall any plague come nigh thy tent. 11 For he will give his angels charge over thee, To keep thee in all thy ways. 12 They shall bear thee up in their hands, Lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. 13 Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: The young lion and the serpent shalt thou trample under foot. 14 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. 15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble: I will deliver him, and honor him. 16 With long life will I satisfy him, And show him my salvation. An examination of verses 1 and 9 will bring us to the conclusion that God is our Secret Place. Psa.91:1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty... 9 For thou, O Jehovah, art my refuge! Thou hast made the Most High thy habitation;.  We must be "hidden with Christ in God”. 1 Jn 2:24 says, "As for you, let that abide in you which ye heard from the beginning. If that which ye heard from the beginning abide in you, ye also shall abide in the Son, and in the Father". In other words we must believe what Jesus and the Apostles gave to us in the beginning, in order to be in the secret place.  The traditions of men will not save. Paul said in (2 Ti 4:18) The Lord will deliver me from every evil work.  He also said that Jesus bore the curse so that we would be blessed (Gal.3:13,14). He also said, we were delivered out of the power of darkness (Col.1:13). Do you believe it? Then in that point you are hidden in Christ. Also the walk of the rebellious will not save. 1 Joh 2:5,6 ...Hereby we know that we are in him: he that saith he abideth in him ought himself also to walk even as he walked. An important key to entering the secret place is seen here in Psa. 91:2  I will say of Jehovah, He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in whom I trust.  Verse 9 says, For thou, O Jehovah, art my refuge! Thou hast made the Most High thy habitation; (Notice! If we say he is our refuge, He becomes our habitation.)  Rom.10:10 says ,for with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Confess is the Greek word homo-logeo, which means to "speak the same as". We must say what God says. To not say what God says is not to confess him before men. Mt.10:32-33 says ,Every one therefore who shall confess me before men, him will I also confess before my Father who is in heaven. 33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father who is in heaven. To deny what the Lord says before men is to not be justified before the Father in that point. Rom.3:4 God forbid: yea, let God be found true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified (accounted righteous) in thy words, And mightest prevail when thou comest into judgment. You must be called righteous by God through your confession or you will not escape judgment. Notice! In Psa. 91 confession brought protection to the body. Here is a good example of this confession in a dream given to Anette Rich in February 1994: I did not want to get up, but the Spirit of the Lord would not let me stay in bed, and urged me to get up and write down this dream: There was an order given that everyone was to register. All people with degrees and knowledge had to declare these facts. We then had to be sure our homes were airtight around the doors and windows. Then we had to go rally at an open air stadium. There were many, many people. All of a sudden I started to say, "Make it short. Make it short". Others joined in and this saying became a throng. I needed to get out of there, and started to make comments such as, "I am God's child, the air is purified around me. The angels of the Lord are around me. The Blood of Jesus saves me."  I had other people around me and many behind me, some I knew, others I did not. Birds fell straight out of the sky, dead. People fell dead and many were getting weak as we marched straight on. I kept repeating the above sayings. Here and there someone said, "I can't do it anymore!" I kept walking and said, "That is not a worthy statement of a child of God! Repeat what I say"... and then I would repeat the above and other scriptures. I was urged from within to keep my eyes straight ahead and not upon death. I urged others to do the same. There was a white film over everything and it was coming down. It covered trees and was almost illuminative. It also felt like it was giving health, strength, and light, and helped us to walk ahead. Here is an example of why we will need to know such things: John L vision; The Lord took me to the streets of America and I saw all the cities on fire, we have 8 million Moslems in America and when the war breaks out in the holy land and America gets involved 8 million Moslems will burn America to the ground. I saw Moslem women coming into America and in their inner body parts vials of anthrax and bio chemicals. I saw 180 million Americans die in a 72 hr. period. Then I saw New York, Florida, Nevada, Texas, California nuked, we will be invaded and Russia and China will do it. This probably happens at the end of the Tribulation. I can think of several times in the past that I have been told by a parent that they could not come to the assembly because one or more or their children had measles, chicken pox, or mumps. I have told these parents to bring their children because no one in the assembly would catch the disease. I have never been disappointed after making a bold confession of faith in God! When one of my own 5 children caught one of these diseases, unrelated to the above instances, we would always rebuke it and command it to go in Jesus' name and it would. My children have never had more than a very light case of any of these diseases and most have never had them at all. We are promised protection from the deadly pestilence in Psa. 91:3,5,6 For he will deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, And from the deadly pestilence. Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night, Nor for the arrow that flieth by day; For the pestilence that walketh in darkness, Nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. The Hebrew word pestilence here means an epidemic disease. However in verse 10 the word plague which we would normally equate with pestilence is not at all restricted to an epidemic. The Hebrew word plague just means a blow, or to smite. Verse 10 says, "There shall no evil befall thee, Neither shall any plague come nigh thy tent". Notice in this verse that if we are in the Secret Place, we are not under the plagues or judgments of God.  This is witnessed also in Exo. 12:13  And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and there shall no plague be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt. In this text the blood of the lamb (Jesus) delivers us from all plagues. The judgments that God brought upon Egypt were all called plagues in Exo 9:14, 11:1. There were conditions for this wonderful benefit. Notice verses 9,10  Eat not of it raw, nor boiled at all with water, but roast with fire; its head with its legs and with the inwards thereof. And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; but that which remaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire. In other words we should partake of all of the lamb, who is Jesus, the Word. That includes all of His head, which is His mind, doctrine, and thinking. That includes all of His legs, which is His walk. For to be in Him we must walk as He walked (I Jn 2:3-6).  Heb 10:26 says  For if we sin willfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more a sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and a fierceness of fire which shall devour the adversaries. You should see here that the sacrifice will not protect those walking in rebellion, only those in ignorance or failure. When David sinned with Bathsheba the Lord "put away his sin" when he repented "but the sword did not depart from his house". In other words the sacrifice would not protect him from the penalty of his sin. All of the Lamb also includes all of His inwards, which is the inner man of the heart who is filled with His Spirit in Eph. 3:16,17. To sum this up, for the Christian to receive deliverance from the plagues, he should believe in this doctrine, walk as a Biblical disciple, and receive God's Spirit, and not a religious Spirit as in 2 Co. 11:4. Another main condition, which is closely related to the last, is in Exo. 12:7 And they shall take of the blood, and put it on the two side-posts and on the lintel, upon the houses wherein they shall eat it. First you should see that the Israelites were the ones who applied the blood. I Jn 1:7 but if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanseth us from all sin. The light here is the word of God. So the blood cleanses us through walking (by partaking of the legs of the Lamb) in the Word. 2Co. 7:1 Having therefore these promises, (Word) beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. You see, the cleansing of the blood is applied through the Word. In John 2:1-11, Jesus did his first "sign". He had the servants (representing ministers) fill the 6 (Representing man's number) clay (Representing man's nature) pots (or vessels) with water (Representing the Word in Eph. 5:26). Then He turned it into wine (representing the blood of Jesus in Mat.26:27,28).  Why is it that many of God's people do not escape the plagues of this world? Rebellion and unbelief against the light of the Word! Hosea 4:6 says My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: (the Word) because thou hast rejected knowledge, (the Word) I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I also will forget thy children. We are in a battle for our lives against the principalities and powers in Eph.6:12, and most of God's people refuse to put on the armor of God in verses 13-17. Notice the armor must be put on by you, by faith in the Word of God. Otherwise the forces of darkness will take you out!! The Devil is a good lawyer, he knows the Word, which gives him his rights. Know the Word so you can stand on your rights, the blood of the Lamb. Vision given to Dumitru Duduman that describes our rights in Christ and how the blood is applied: Oregon, May 7, 1993. It was getting dark. Then suddenly it turned pitch black! It was as if the whole world had gone dark at that moment (We are on the verge of this darkness-- Tribulation). All the people were in a frenzy! They became disoriented, and some were even screaming. After some time we heard the sound of an army approaching. Soon we saw them coming out of the black mist. All were dressed in black except one. That one seemed to be their leader. He was dressed in a red robe with a thick black belt over his waist. On his head he had a sign. As I looked, I saw that in his hand he held the same kind of sharp spear as everyone else in his army. "I am Lucifer!" he exclaimed. "I am the king of this world! I have come to make war against the Christians!”  It looked as though all the Christians were huddled together in one big group. Some began to cry when they heard this. Others began to tremble, while some just stood without saying anything. Lucifer continued to speak. "All of those that want to fight against my army and think they can be victorious, go to the right. Those that fear me, go to the left". Only about a quarter of the group stepped to the right. All the others went to the left. Then Lucifer ordered his army, "Destroy those on the right!" The army began to advance and quickly surrounded the Christians on the right. As they began to close in on us, a powerful light appeared and encircled us. Then an angel of the Lord spoke. "Take out your swords and fight. Defend yourselves and be victorious over the enemy". "What swords?" a man in the group asked. "The Word of the Lord is your sword", the angel answered. When we understood what the angel meant, we began to quote verses from the Bible.  Then suddenly as if we were one voice, we began to sing a song. Our voices thundered so loudly that the dark army began to retreat in fear. They did not have the courage to come against us anymore.  Lucifer, filled with rage, turned to those on the left. "You who all of your life have been trying to please two masters, because you could not stand against me, I have the power to destroy you". He then ordered his army to attack. It was a total massacre. The ones on the left could not defend themselves. One by one they all fell. This killing seemed to go on for a long time. After a while we could actually smell the stench of the dead. Someone asked, "Why could they not be protected also?"  The angel answered, "Because all of their lives they have been lukewarm. Because of their hypocrisy the true church has been blasphemed. They have brought disrespect to the Word of God. They were not clean”.  As we continued to look, we saw the sun coming over the horizon. The black clouds began to break up. Then they disappeared. Only one cloud was left, on which Lucifer and his army stood. Lucifer looked at me shaking his fists and said, "I will destroy you even if I have to throw my spear at you from here!" Then that cloud disappeared, too. … The first thought that came to my mind as I awoke was that this had been the last fight of the devil against the church. If we remain faithful, we will be victorious. Another condition is seen in Exo. 12:22,23 And ye shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and strike the lintel and the two side-posts with the blood that is in the basin; and none of you shall go out of the door of his house until the morning. 23 For Jehovah will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when he seeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side-posts, Jehovah will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite you. As a Christian you should see here that you must abide in your house, which is Jesus, the Word. If you abide in Jesus, you abide in fruit and eternal life as in Joh 15:1-8, I Jn.5:11. The destroyer cannot come past the blood on the door posts to smite you. As you can see, all of these conditions are actually one. Walk by faith in the Lord as your Savior in all things and grow in the light of His Word to know your rights. The devil is a good lawyer, He knows his rights. If you add to or subtract from the Word with your own thinking, he can afflict you as said in Rev.22:18,19. Another condition is seen in Exo. 12:15 Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread; even the first day ye shall put away leaven out of your houses: for whosoever eateth leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel. The unleavened bread here is purity in doctrine or the Word. Jesus said in Mat. 16:11 to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees (the religious leaders of today too). In verse 12 they understood the leaven was their teaching.  Also Paul exhorted us in I Co. 5:6-8 to keep the feast of unleavened bread by casting out the leaven of malice and wickedness. Here He said the unleavened bread was sincerity and truth. Back in Exo 12:15 we see that there should be no leaven in our house (or body) for seven days. The seventh day was the day of ceasing from our works to enter the rest. So keep the truth in your house until you cease from your works and rest in Christ or you will be "cut off" from Israel. The Lord spoke to me when I was writing an article for our website. He gave me a long list of miracles He was going to perform in order to save some of His people because He said, "they are not under the curse". One thing He said was that He was going to translate (not to heaven) some of His people right out of the middle of nuclear blasts in order to preserve them. I can assure you that these are not Christians in the secret place who do not believe this is their covenant right. Jesus said "be it unto you according to your faith" and "as you have believed so shall it be unto you". Remember, He could not do many mighty works because of their unbelief. Preserved Through a Nuke: Gaylene Wolmack I would like to share with you a quick vision the Lord gave me about a year ago. I was reading about the coming bombing of the U.S. and as I sat down in my rocker to look out my big picture window to reflect about this with the Lord, all of a sudden a laughter came forth from way down inside. I asked the Lord what was so funny about the U.S. being bombed. He then showed me a quick vision of Phoenix being bombed (I perceived it didn't matter what city) and in the midst of that there were people walking around just fine. I then saw the enemy watching via satellite and was horrified to see people walking around in the midst of what I perceived to be a nuclear bombing. The Lord is our High Tower and our Refuge and our Fortress! Here is an awesome example of faith applying the Blood to the doorway in the testimony of John G Lake during the bubonic plague: Now watch the action of the law of life. Faith belongs to the law of life. Faith is the very opposite of fear. Faith has the opposite effect in spirit, and soul, and body. Faith causes the spirit of man to become confident. It causes the mind of man to become restful, and positive. A positive mind repels disease. Consequently, the emanation of the Spirit destroys disease germs. And because we were in contact with the Spirit of life, I and a little Dutch fellow with me went out and buried many of the people who had died from the bubonic plague. We went into the homes and carried them out, dug the graves and put them in. Sometimes we would put three or four in one grave. We never took the disease. Why? Because of the knowledge that the law of life in Christ Jesus protects us. That law was working. Because of the fact that a man by that action of his will, puts himself purposely in contact with God, faith takes possession of his heart, and the condition of his nature is changed. Instead of being fearful, he is full of faith. Instead of being absorbent and drawing everything to himself, his spirit repels sickness and disease. The Spirit of Christ Jesus flows through the whole being , and emanates through the hands, the heart, and from every pore of the body. During that great plague that I mentioned, they sent a government ship with supplies and corps of doctors. One of the doctors sent for me, and said, "What have you been using to protect yourself? Out corps has this preventative and that, which we use as protection, but we concluded that if a man could stay on the ground as you have and keep ministering to the sick and burying the dead, you must have a secret. What is it?" I answered, "Brother that is the 'law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus'. I believe that just as long as I keep my soul in contact with the living God so that His Spirit is flowing into my soul and body, that no germ will ever attach itself to me, for the Spirit of God will kill it". He asked, "Don't you think that you had better use our preventatives?" I replied, "No, but doctor I think that you would like to experiment with me. If you will go over to one of these dead people and take the foam that comes out of their lungs after death, then put it under the microscope you will see masses of living germs. You will find they are alive until a reasonable time after a man is dead. You can fill my hand with them and I will keep it under the microscope, and instead of these germs remaining alive, they will die instantly". They tried it and found it was true. They questioned, "What is that?" I replied, "That is 'the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus'. When a man's spirit and a man's body are filled with the blessed presence of God, it oozes out of the pores of your flesh and kills the germs". Suppose on the other hand, my soul had been under the law of death, and I were in fear and darkness? The very opposite would have been the result. The result would have been that my body would have absorbed the germs, these would have generated disease and I would have died. You who are sick, put yourself in contact with God's law of life. Read His Word with the view of enlightening your heart so that you will be able to look up with more confidence and believe Him. Pray that the Spirit of God will come into your soul, take possession of your body, and its power will make you well. That is the exercise of the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus. Jer 18:7,8 says "At what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up and to break down and to destroy it; if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them. This is also what we see in Joel 2:12,13. Gods people in America must repent. The nation exists only for our sake. At what time the people of God become bad for America and America becomes bad for the people of God there must be a separation. Egypt must fall and Israel must come out!  Gods people are in bondage to an evil Babylonish religious system that has more affinity for the world than the kingdom as in Rev 18:45. There must be judgment on the system to bring them out as in Jer 50:3-12. If there is no spiritual separation, which is sanctification or holiness, there must be physical separation by the judgment of the wicked. Without ten righteous in Sodom, it is doomed as in Gen 18:32. (Isa 26:9,10)...For when thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world learn righteousness. Let favor be showed to the wicked, yet will he not learn righteousness: in the land of uprightness will he deal wrongfully, and will not behold the majesty of the Lord. Favor given to the unrepentant destroys them.  Judgment is also God's mercy. Angels took Lot's family by the hand and led them out of Sodom. He "escaped" to a "little city" of refuge called Zoar.  (Heb 2:3) How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? (Luk 1:36) But watch ye at every season, making supplication, that ye may prevail to escape all these things that shall come to pass... . (Rom 2:3) And reckonest thou this, o man, who judges them that practice such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God? The "little city” Lot escaped to reminds me of the "little white church" that escaped the holocaust and the invading army in "Tremble Ye Women”?  Disciples of Christ who are living the crucified life will escape the coming judgment. One method God will use is to protect a few cities from the destroyer as Goshen was protected when Egypt was destroyed in Exo. 8:21-24.  The Flies here symbolize demons for Satan is lord of the flies in Exo.14:29,30 / 11:4-7 / 12:23.  Cities of refuge were provided to protect the manslayer, who killed someone "unwittingly" (not with their own knowledge or wisdom) from the "avenger of blood” in Num 35:11,12 / Josh 20 / Deu 19. The avenger of blood was usually a relative or close friend of the deceased. A disciple of Christ is one who by the wisdom of Christ puts to death his old man (manslayer), and is therefore not guilty. The avenger, the wicked, is a relative and friend of the old man. They are both born of flesh.  The avengers of this world hate and seek to put to death those who have put to death self. Satan and his army are coming to avenge the blood of the old man. (For Example: Pharaoh's army, Assyrian army, Mat 24:8-14, or Dumitru's dreams "The Black Bird" and "The Black Army") Spiritually speaking if you are caught outside the city of refuge the avenger of blood may put you to death (Num 35:26-28 / Ex 12:22 / Gen 19:21 / 2Kings 18:13 / 19:30-34 / Jn 15:4-6). After the death of the high priest in Num 35: 28, who is Christ, has been manifest in our life by the crucified life in 1Co 2:2 / Exo 12:5-9 / Php 3:10-15, we may go where God wills and be safe (Num 15:28 / Jn 7:30 / Lk 4:29,30 / Acts 12:11 / Psa 91). Some will not die for we have come to the end of the sixth day (Mat 16:28-17:2 For him who has ears).  The wicked in the U.S. are also manslayers for they have put to death their spiritual man. They are guilty and they will die for they did it wittingly (following their own wisdom). God is an avenger (Rom 12:19 / Exo 11:4 / 12:12,29) against those who don't walk in and out under the blood (Exo 12:7 - Deu 28:6,19 /1Jn 1:7) and eat all the flesh of the Lamb (Exo 12:8, Joh 1:29 6:53, Jesus is the word made flesh) (Exo 12:10 / 16:19,4 / Jn 6:32-35)  Though it is in the Word some do not accept divine healing and protection. 1 Pe 2:24 / Luk 10:19 Jesus said "be it unto you according to your faith".) Our faith must be in unleavened bread, which means according to the Word in teaching - Mat 16:6,11,12, in attitude - Luk 12:1, in actions -1 Co 5:6-8). To eat the unleavened bread is to consume the pure Word till it becomes a part of you as food does. The traditions of men have no power to bear the fruit of Christ (Mat 13:23). They add to, and take away from the word and are cursed (Rev 22:18,19).

If a Non-Jew Pours a Cup of Wine, Does the Wine Remaining in the Bottle Become Forbidden?

Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour

If a non-Jew moves a bottle of wine from one point on the table to another (even though the wine is not "Mebushal"), the wine is nevertheless permissible. According to the Shulhan Aruch, kosher wine becomes forbidden only through "Shichshuch," meaning, if a non-Jew moves the bottle in a way that causes the wine to significantly shake. It often happens that a non-Jewish housekeeper moves a bottle of wine on the table to make room for a platter or serving dish. In such a case, the wine in the bottle remains entirely permissible. If a gentile pours wine (that is not "Mebushal") into a cup, then the wine in the cup is forbidden for drinking. If the non-Jew who poured the wine is practicing idol worship, then the wine is forbidden also for any other kind of benefit, and thus it may not even be sold. The question arises in such a case as to the status of the wine remaining in the bottle. In other areas of Halacha, there is a principle known as "Nisok" which means that a stream of liquid has the effect of Halachically combining the liquid in the top utensil with the liquid in the bottom utensil, such that they are given the same status. Do we apply the rule to this case, such that the wine in the bottle will have the same status as the wine in the cup, and thus be forbidden? The Halacha in this case depends on whether the non-Jew has the Halachic status of an Obed Aboda Zara (idolater). Moslems do not have this status, and therefore, as mentioned, the wine that they pour is forbidden only for drinking, and not for other kinds of benefit. In such a case, the wine remaining in the bottle is permissible even for drinking. If, however, the non-Jew who poured the wine is an idol worshipper (most of the population), in which case the wine in the cup is forbidden for any kind of benefit, then the wine remaining in the bottle is forbidden for drinking. Other forms of benefit, however, are permissible, and thus the wine may be sold. Summary: If an idol worshipper pours kosher wine into a cup (and the wine is not "Mebushal"), then the wine in the cup is forbidden for any kind of benefit, and the wine remaining in the bottle is forbidden for drinking, but permissible for other types of benefit, such as selling. If a Moslem pours kosher wine into a cup, then the wine in the cup is forbidden only for drinking, and the wine remaining in the bottle is entirely permissible.

The Ben Ish Hai (Rav Yosef Haim of Baghdad, 1833-1909), in Parashat Balak, discusses the case of a non-Jew who deliberately touches a Jew's wine for the purpose of rendering it forbidden. For example, if a non-Jew becomes angry at a Jew, and in his fury he shakes the Jew's bottle of wine so that it would become forbidden for the Jew, does the bottle of wine in fact become forbidden? The Ben Ish Hai cites different views on this issue. He notes that whereas the Rambam (Rabbi Moshe Maimonides, Spain-Egypt, 1135-1204) ruled that the wine becomes forbidden in such a case, others ruled that the wine is permissible, because the Sages did not forbid wine touched by a non-Jew under these circumstances. As for the final Halacha, the Ben Ish Hai writes that in situations of "Hefsed Meruba" – where a substantial financial loss is at stake, such as when dealing with expensive wine or a large quantity of wine – then the wine is certainly permissible and may be used for drinking or any other form of benefit. If, however, the financial loss at stake is not so substantial, then it is preferable not to use the wine. Even in such a case, the Ben Ish Hai emphasizes, the wine is permissible according to the strict Halacha and one may rely on the lenient position. He notes that this applies even if we do not know with absolute certainty that the gentile specifically intended to render the wine forbidden, but we can reasonably assume that this was his intent in light of the circumstances surrounding the incident. In the next passage, the Ben Ish Hai cites a particularly stringent ruling of Rabbi Menahem Hababli forbidding wine that a non-Jew looked upon, but did not touch. According to this view, one must ensure to keep his wine hidden or covered so that no non-Jew can look at it. Although there are people who follow this custom, according to the strict Halacha wine that a non-Jew looked at is permissible. Refraining from such wine constitutes a "Midat Hasidut" – a measure of special piety – and not an actual Halachic requirement. The Ben Ish Hai notes that Moslems, who worship the single Creator, are not considered idolaters, and there is thus no concern whatsoever in using wine that a Moslem has looked at, not even on the level of "Midat Hasidut." Although Halacha does not follow the view of Rabbi Menahem Hababli, his ruling demonstrates the severity of this prohibition against non-Jewish wine. If some authorities go so far as to forbid wine that was looked at by a non-Jew, then even if we do not accept this position, it emphasizes just how careful we must be when it comes to non-Jewish wine. Summary: If a gentile touched kosher wine with the specific intent to make it forbidden, the wine is permissible, as long as we can reasonably assume that this was his intent. Preferably, however, one should not use the wine, unless a substantial financial loss is at stake. Some people have the practice as a measure of special piety to ensure that a gentile does not even look at their wine, as there is one opinion that forbids wine that a non-Jew looked upon. This practice is not required according to the strict Halacha, but it demonstrates the severity of the prohibition against non-Jewish wine.

The Status of Kosher Wine That Was Mixed With Non-Jewish Wine

If kosher wine was mixed with forbidden wine, what is the status of the mixture? The Halacha in this case depends on which kind of forbidden wine was mixed with the kosher wine. If the wine was "Yayin Nesech," meaning, wine that had actually been used in a pagan ritual service, then the entire mixture is forbidden and must be discarded. Even if only a minuscule amount of "Yayin Nesech" mixed with the kosher wine, the wine is forbidden, and one may not drink or derive any form of benefit whatsoever from the wine. If, however, the wine was not used for a religious ritual, but was forbidden because it belonged to or was touched by a gentile, then the Halacha will depend on whether the non-Jew who owns or touched the wine is considered an idolater. Moslems believe in and worship a single Creator, and thus are not considered idolaters. Therefore, the status of wine owned or touched by a Moslem is less strict than that of wine owned or touched by other non-Jews. If wine owned or touched by a Moslem mixes with kosher wine, then we may apply the rule of "Bittul Be'shishim," which means that the wine is permissible if the forbidden wine constitutes 1/60th or less of the mixture. So long as the proportion of kosher wine to forbidden wine is at least 60:1, the wine is permissible for drinking and all other forms of benefit. If the forbidden wine that mixed with the kosher wine was owned or touched by other non-Jews, who are considered idolaters, then the wine may not be drunk regardless of the proportion of the kosher wine. Even if only a small amount of forbidden wine mixed with the kosher wine, the wine is forbidden for drinking. One may, however, sell the mixture to a non-Jew, and then destroy the amount of money equal to the value of the forbidden wine in the mixture. For example, if the forbidden wine constituted 1/15th of the mixture, and the Jew received $15 for the wine, he must destroy $1 by burning it, throwing it into the ocean, or the like, so that no one derives benefit from the forbidden wine. The rest of the money, however, is permissible and may be used. (Based on Ben Ish Hai, Parashat Balak, 12) Summary: If even a small amount of non-Jewish wine mixed with kosher wine, the entire mixture is forbidden for drinking. One may, however, sell the mixture, and then destroy the portion of the money received that is equal to the value of the forbidden wine in the mixture. There are, however, two exceptions to this rule. If the non-Jewish wine in the mixture was forbidden because it was owned or touched by a Moslem, then the mixture is permissible for drinking, assuming the forbidden wine constitutes 1/60th or less of the mixture. Secondly, if the forbidden wine had been used in pagan worship, then the entire mixture is forbidden for any purpose, regardless of the proportion of kosher wine against the non-kosher wine.

The Ben Ish Hai (Rav Yosef Haim of Baghdad, 1839-1933), in Parashat Balak (Halacha 2), discusses the prohibition of Setam Yenam, which forbids partaking of the wine of a non-Jew or wine that was touched by a non-Jew (listen to audio recording for precise citation). If the non-Jew is an idolater, than the wine is forbidden both for drinking and for any other kind of benefit. However, the Ben Ish Hai writes, if a non-Jewish, pagan child touches the wine, and the child is too young to understand the concept of idolatry of idolatrous worship, then the wine he touches is forbidden only for drinking. Since the child is too young to worship idols with an understanding of what it means, one may derive benefit from the wine he touches. The wine is, however, forbidden for drinking, even if the child is just a newborn infant. This applies only to children of non-Jewish pagans. In the case of a Moslem infant who touches wine without intending at all to touch it, the wine is permissible even for drinking. Moslems believe in the oneness of God, and are thus not considered idolaters. Therefore, the status of wine that they touch is more lenient than that of wine touched by idolaters. Specifically, wine touched by a Moslem is forbidden only for drinking, but not for other forms of benefit. And additionally, the Ben Ish Hai claims, if a Moslem infant touches wine unintentionally, the wine is permissible even for drinking. In the next Halacha, the Ben Ish Hai addresses the question of "Safek Setam Yenam" – a product regarding which we are uncertain whether it contains non-Jewish wine, or wine regarding which we are uncertain whether it was touched by a non-Jew. The Ben Ish Hai writes that in cases where we are uncertain whether it is the wine of a Moslem, the wine may be used, even for drinking. He gives an example of a certain kind of honey that Arab merchants would occasionally mix together with wine. The Ben Ish Hai writes that this product may be eaten, noting that Rav Haim Vital (1543-1620) testified to the fact that the Arizal (Rav Yishak Luria of Safed, 1534-1572) partook of this kind of honey. Since it is questionable whether or not the honey contains non-Jewish wine, and the non-Jew in this case in any event is a Moslem, who is not considered an idolater, the honey is permissible. Summary: If a child of non-Jewish pagans touched wine, the wine is forbidden for drinking, but other forms of benefit are permissible. If the child of non-Jews who believe in a single God – such as Moslems – touches wine, and did not have any intention to touch the wine – as in the case of a young infant – the wine is permissible even for drinking. If a product might contain wine of Moslems, and this is uncertain, the product is permissible for consumption.

The Ben Ish Hai (Rav Yosef Haim of Baghdad, 1833-1909), in Parashat Balak (1), discusses the Halachot relevant to the prohibition against drinking the wine of non-Jews (listen to audio recording for precise citation). He writes that according to Torah law, the only wine that is forbidden is Yayin Nesech, meaning, wine that was used as part of an idolatrous religious service. The Torah compares wine poured for a pagan deity to a pagan sacrifice, and it is therefore forbidden just like something that was offered as a sacrifice to an idol. The Ben Ish Hai emphasizes that Yayin Nesech is forbidden both for drinking and for any other kind of benefit. The Sages, however, expanded this prohibition to include Setam Yenam, any wine owned by gentiles. Furthermore, they forbade even Jewish wine that was touched by a gentile. The reason given for these enactments is that the Sages wanted to prevent Jewish men from engaging in close social contact with gentile women, which could lead to promiscuity or even intermarriage. However, the Ben Ish Hai writes, this is not the primary reason for the prohibition of Setam Yenam. The real reason, he asserts, involves deep Kabbalistic concepts that the Sages understood with their keen spiritual insight. According to Kabbalistic teaching, there is something inherent in the wine of non-Jews that renders it forbidden for Jews, and this is the primary reason for the prohibition. The Sages chose not to disclose the Kabbalistic origins of this Halacha, and so they instead gave a simple reason that even the unlearned masses could understand – the interest in avoiding close social contact with gentile women. For this reason, the Ben Ish Hai adds, the prohibition of Setam Yanam will always apply, even if the stated reason becomes irrelevant. If, at some point, circumstances arise that obviate the concern of close social contact, it would nevertheless still be forbidden to partake of the wine of non-Jews. The prohibition of Setam Yenam applies to both drinking and deriving other kinds of benefit from the wine of non-Jews. However, when it comes to non-Jews who are not idolaters, their wine – or the wine of Jews that they touch – is forbidden only for drinking. Other forms of benefit are not forbidden unless the gentile who owns or touched the wine worships idols. Accordingly, the Ben Ish Hai writes, it is permissible to derive benefit from the wine of Moslems, who, as the Rambam (Rabbi Moshe Maimonides, Spain-Egypt, 1135-1204) ruled in one of his responsa, are not considered idolaters. Moslems believe in a single Creator, and are therefore not considered idolaters. Wine that they own or touched is thus forbidden only for drinking; other forms of benefit are permissible. The Ben Ish Hai notes that this is also the position taken by the Arizal (Rav Yishak Luria of Safed, 1534-1572). The Ben Ish Hai discusses in this context the status of non-Jews who bow before articles in their houses of worship, and notes that they are considered idolaters, and their wine is forbidden for any kind of benefit. The concept of God's unity in their thought is not pure unity, and rather constitutes "Shituf" (the belief in a "partnership" of deities), and they are thus considered idolaters with respect to the laws of Setam Yenam. Therefore, all kinds of benefit are forbidden from wine owned or touched by a believing idolaters. The Ben Ish Hai in this context emphasizes the severity of this prohibition against partaking of the wine of gentiles. He makes reference to work on this topic called Yayin Ha'meshumar, a 19th-century work by Rav Natan Shapiro, and says that a person's "hair stands up" when he reads in this book of the unique gravity of this prohibition. The Ben Ish Hai also mentions the work "Ayuma Ka'nidgalot" which (on p. 24) tells a frightening story of the grave consequences of violating this Halacha. This prohibition is so severe, the Ben Ish Hai writes, that a person who violates this law "uproots his soul from the place where it is rooted, and he has no share in the world to come." Furthermore, there are some authorities who maintain that a person must avoid the wine of non-Jews even at the risk of death. According to this view, if a doctor advises a Jewish patient that he must drink a certain wine to save his life, he should surrender his life rather than drink the wine. It does not appear that Halacha follows this opinion, but the fact that some authorities issued such a ruling demonstrates the severity with which this prohibition is treated. Summary: It is forbidden to drink wine that is owned by a non-Jew, or that was touched by a non-Jew. If the non-Jew is somebody who has the status as an idolater – such as one who bows before an article in their house of worship – then the wine is forbidden for drinking and for any other kind of benefit.

Conversions have been few and far between, but God is beginning to move in an exciting way in this desert country. Bible translation work has been done for years into the Tamajaq language and now it is being broadcast by radio to a possible listening audience of 2 million people. This weekly broadcast is also heard in Nigeria, Libya, Algeria, and Mali, which have extensive Tamajaq-speaking populations. Many encouraging reports are coming in as a result of these Bible broadcasts and the Bible translation work continues, along with the preaching and teaching of the Word of God in Agadez and surrounding villages. Laborers are desperately needed in this field because it appears God is on the verge of doing something great in this staunch Moslem area. Could it be that God would have you volunteer to reach the Muslim people of Niger?
