Max Blumenthal spoke on May 8, 2024 at UMass-Amherst hours after state police brutally repressed an encampment of students protesting the US-backed genocide in Gaza. There, he addressed the Palestine solidarity uprising on campuses across the country, and explains how the elite reaction triggered by October 7 has exposed Israeli influence over the major American institutions, from academia to Congress to local law enforcement agencies. Digital Assistants - Deep Dive #1: Hardware

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 21, 2020 34:59

In the first deep dive of the Digital Assistant topic, the Brothers discuss a number of hardware options for accessing your digital assistant, including: Your phone! There is an app for each of the digital assistant technologies that will allow you to test out the technology: Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, Apple Siri (built-in to apple phones only) Amazon Echo: Various options, relatively inexpensive. Examples: Echo Dot (3rd Gen, as of podcast recording): small, inexpensive ($49..but often on sale), weak sound (only for small room music) Echo (3rd Gen, as of podcast recording): mid-size, decently priced ($99), decent sound Echo Show (see BiT below) Google (“Hey Google”): Limited line-up, but great options for those that are deep in the Google ecosystem Home Mini: small, inexpensive ($49…but often on sale), weak sound (only for small room music) Home: mid-size, decently priced ($99), decent sound Home Max: larger, expensive ($299), very good sound Apple (“Hey Siri”): Great for those in the Apple ecosystem HomePod: mid-large size, expensive ($299), great sound CarPlay: Allow your car stereo to utilize Siri in your car (through your phone). Available in select factory and aftermarket stereo systems. Sonos: For the audiophile…full home sound system that can tap into a digital assistant. Brothers’ Advice: Once you have decided what digital assistant you are most comfortable with (1st episode advice), now you need to determine whether you want great sound that can tap into that assistant…or have access to the assistant with minimal sound. Each ecosystem now has options for the sound level you are looking for. In addition, the “BiTS” (Brothers in Tech Suggestions): Brian’s Pick = Amazon Echo Show: Although setting cooking timers with your voice is great when your hands are busy, it can be really helpful to be able to see how much time is left! Although a bit pricey for what it can do, the Show is a solid device for those situations. **There are several versions of this (version 8 is the newest as of this podcast), so be sure to compare features/cost as an earlier version might work just fine for you. Alan’s Pick = Apple Airport Express: Although this product is not being manufactured/sold anymore (hence the Wikipedia link), this could be a great option for streaming music to an otherwise non-internet connected speaker…if you have or can find one. The Express can act as a wifi extender (to boost your wifi signal), as well as allow you to stream music to a speaker connected to it (via 3.5 mm headphone jack). Note: Apple does not support these devices anymore (at least the earliest version), so you may have to do a bit of software tinkering to set-up. Have any feedback for the Brothers regarding this topic (or future topics)? Email info@themesh.tv

Google's secret hardware ingredient is AI

What does Google know about hardware that no one else does? If you said software, you're almost right. What Google likes to think is its secret sauce is artificial intelligence, which manifests in its consumer products as the Google Assistant. The Assistant was front and center during the company's big hardware event earlier this month. From the new Pixel 2 phones to the Home Mini and Home Max smart speakers to the insanely powerful Pixelbook laptop, Google pointed to its command, "OK, Google" again and again as a key way to interact with its devices and get information. Nowhere was the power of AI more clear than in the Pixel Buds earphones, a set of wireless headphones that can translate spoken language on the fly. AI is also a big selling point of Clips, the camera that Google intends to be a kind of intelligent life logger: You set it down on the a shelf or floor, and it will smartly capture only the moments that matter to you. Are all these smarts compelling or creepy? And even if it's the former, is having a smart AI enough for Google to actually move these products on store shelves? And what's good (Miley)? Those are the questions Mashable's Tech Team tackles in the latest MashTalk. Tech Reporter Karissa Bell, who got to try out Google's new suite of products, joins the podcast alongside Tech Correspondent Raymond Wong and Chief Correspondent Lance Ulanoff. Follow MashTalk on Twitter.

This week, the crew of the Space Javelin have to start off with some scary news regarding security issues, and they put it right up front to stress how important it is. Yet *again,* it is time to change your Yahoo (and associated services, like Flickr) password, or better yet invoke your own personal "three breaches and you're out" rule, because security and Yahoo haven't been on speaking terms for at least the last three years. The new revelations are actually about the 2013 security breach, but it's now apparently that all three billion accounts were compromised. Even if you haven't used your Yahoo account in years, change the security questions, change the password, delete it entirely (if you wish), and be sure to change the password on other sites if you used the same password anywhere else (and slap yourself on the wrists for that). In related head-slapping news, it turns out that High Sierra *introduced* a vulnerability in Keychain. Apple fixed it pretty quick, but you need to update it for the protections to take effect, so if you haven't, grab the "Supplemental Update" from the Mac App Store -- and also see Adobe Indesign start working properly again (Illustrator is still borked for the moment, however). Also tackled: a flat-earther type theory that older iPhones are slowed down is myth-busted; the scattered and few reports about swollen batteries in some iPhone 8 Plus units; Google's latest new toys, and a spec-sheet matchup between the Home Max, Apple's Homepod, and the Sonos 1. But wait, there's more! Samsung's incredibly profitable relationship with Apple! Netflix jacks prices again! The Apple 5c and the FBI! Parallels 13 is out! Office ... um ... 2018 probably ... coming soon! The Edge browser comes to iOS! MLB's Apple Watch non-scandal resolved! Bert Berns and Clive Davis documentaries on Apple Music (what?), and of course all this and more, cadets, so prepare to enter the wormhole of tech news on this week's episode!
