Faith in a Fresh Vibe
#68 – Dr. Chanequa on Sacred Self-Care, Connection, Reconciliation, and Strategies to Survive

Faith in a Fresh Vibe

Season 10 already?! Hello friends, welcome to the Faith in a Fresh Vibe Podcast, where we journey through decolonizing and deconstructing the Christian faith. Season 9 just finished and this episode is the start of Season 10! It's also a "bridge" episode. Since last season was one on embodiment and mental health, and this season is for authors and their new books, I thought an episode that covers both would be fitting. Dr. Chanequa Walker-Barnes is someone I've been looking to invite on the podcast for sometime. You might remember her words if you've read my book, When We Belong. I reference, I Bring the Voices of My People, in my chapter on white supremacy. But this episode we talk more than reconciliation. We discuss Dr. Chanequa's latest book, Scared Self-Care. We go deeper to address the systemic issues that impact self-care and how wholeness and liberation are tied to community and reconciliation. Dr. Chaenqua's book is built to provide daily practices and strategies to survive what is often an unjust and hyper-individualized world. Listen in to this insightful and in-depth conversation to hear the expertise of a public theologian and clinical psychologist. Summary Introduction. 0:30 The belief that things could be better and that human beings can make it better. What drives the notion that things can be better, and what drives the belief that if there is a will and a vision, things can happen better. Vision for a better future? 10:16 Cultural differences between western and Black spiritual healing. On family systems therapist and is trained to look at the whole family, not just one person. How the pursuit of happiness fuels disconnection. 15:59 In our hyper-individualised world, happiness is celebrated as the one individual overcomer that celebrates the pursuit of happiness, fueling a greater disconnection. Self care as a survival strategy. Talking about Sacred Self-Care and hope filled community. 22:25 Getting in touch with your body. 27:24 Simple self-care practices that are doable and can be done in five minutes or less, like standing in front of a full-length mirror. Discussing intersectionality. 34:10 Racial reconciliation needs to be centred on women of colour. 41:34 White Supremacy and power preservation. 52:06 About Dr. Walker-Barnes (Twitter; Instagram; Facebook; Substack) Chanequa Walker-Barnes, Ph.D., is a prominent scholar, theologian, and author, known for her thought-provoking work on racial justice and spirituality. With a deep commitment to social change, she combines her expertise in clinical psychology and theology to tackle issues of systemic oppression, cultural trauma, and their impact on individuals and society. Through her research, writing, and speaking, Dr. Chanequa strives to inspire others to transformative social action and wholistic self-care. A professor at Columbia Theological Seminary, she has authored three books – Sacred Self-Care, I Bring the Voices of My People, and Too Heavy a Yoke. Jesus said in John 6:41-59 “I am the bread of life.” The crowd murmured in disagreement. But that didn't stop Jesus from teaching truth. What did this statement mean to the Jewish people and what does it mean for us today? Join Julie Jenkins today as we unpack this together  ****** Last week we focused on the blessing after the miracle – that is, Jesus using the miracle of the feeding of the 5000 to point to the glory of God. Now Jesus moves from the area of Genessaret to teach in Capernaum, his home base and a prosperous town of about 1000 people. The lesson He shared is difficult for us to understand TODAY, but if we put ourselves in the shoes of the Jewish people who were contemporaries of Jesus, we can barely begin to imagine the difficulty they would have had with His words. Which is why John states in chapter 6 verse 41 as written in the New Living Translation… 41 Then the people[a] began to murmur in disagreement because he had said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” I can hear it now…What was that He said? Some translations say that the people “grumbled” which can give us a different picture…my dad would have called that “bellyaching” … and that can make us think that the crowd may have even been speaking belligerently; but the correct interpretation, I believe, is that they were all kind of whispering to each other, a bit shocked and in unbelief, not knowing what to make of this statement that was said openly in the synagogue. “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” To give you some background, after the Israelites left Egypt, and as they wandered in the wilderness for 40 years, God provided them manna every single day. The actual word manna means “what is it?” – because the people didn't know what it was! They quickly learned that manna was bread from heaven that would keep them alive if eaten daily but would only last for a single day. They were to gather what would sustain them for the upcoming 24 hours – or 48 hours if it was the day prior to the Sabbath. If they collected more than that, it would rot in a disgusting way. So they had to trust that God would provide more for them every single day. Later, the Jews were taught that when the Messiah came, He would also bring manna, or bread, that was capable of giving them life. So now Jesus said, not “I BRING the bread of life,” – which is what they would have been expecting from the Messiah… but “I AM the bread of life – sent down FROM heaven.” What could this mean? Instead of trying to understand Jesus' words, however, they simply dismissed Him by attacking His character. Verse 42… 42 They said, “Isn't this Jesus, the son of Joseph? We know his father and mother. How can he say, ‘I came down from heaven'?” They didn't understand what Jesus said, so their response was to dismiss His authority. As WE study the Bible and apply it to our lives, there are certainly going to be things we don't understand. Our job is to keep seeking God's answer and to trust Him AS the authority even when we don't understand. Have you ever heard a word from God, and then questioned whether you heard it at all? Any relationship counselor will tell you that the key to a good relationship is listening. If something confuses you about God or the Bible, keep seeking…keep listening…keep asking questions. Our God is not a God of confusion, and He knows better than we do how we learn and grow. We can always trust His timing and revelation to us. Jesus didn't answer their murmurs that dismissed His authority. Instead, He told them to focus in…He wasn't done explaining. Verse 43… 43 But Jesus replied, “Stop complaining about what I said. 44 For no one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them to me, and at the last day I will raise them up. Anyone who hears about Jesus or feels the pull of faith in Jesus, does so because God has had them in His sight since the beginning of time. We cannot draw ourselves to God – that is one of the reasons we marvel at how gracious and loving He is! Just like the Israelites could do NOTHING to make the manna that would sustain them fall from the sky, we cannot bring God closer to us. On the contrary, God has positioned HIMSELF in our lives – He has OFFERED Himself – our job is to say yes. To accept the manna and ingest it…to receive Jesus, THE bread of life, into our very lives. But unlike manna, which lasted only 24-48 hours, the one who openly receives Jesus, receives life eternal. Jesus is THE bread that will sustain us for ETERNITY. Jesus backs up this bombshell with the news that He is now their direct access to God the Father. Isaiah and Jeremiah both had prophesied that a time would come when the people would have a direct connection with God … something they had always had to rely on the high priest for…and Jesus is saying that HE is now that direct contact…verse 45 45 As it is written in the Scriptures,[b] ‘They will ALL be taught BY God.' Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me...

Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me.  And Jesus gives them further revelation, saying… 46 (Not that anyone has ever seen the Father; only I, who was sent from God, have seen him.) This was huge! The process of meeting with God prior to Jesus was extreme. God is so holy that a strict prescribed protocol had to be followed for the high priest to enter the holy of holies, where the ark of the covenant was kept and God resided. And that could only happen one time a year. And yet Jesus states that not only is He the Bread of Life sent from God, but He has actually seen God. I imagine the murmuring was hushed as He underscored this revelation…vs 47 47 “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes has eternal life. 48 Yes, I am the bread of life! 49 Your ancestors ate manna in the wilderness, but they all died. 50 Anyone who eats the bread from heaven, however, will never die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live forever; and this bread, which I will offer so the world may live, is my flesh.” 52 Then the people began arguing with each other about what he meant. “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” they asked. 53 So Jesus said again, “I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you cannot have eternal life within you. 54 But anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise that person at the last day. 55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. There is little doubt in my mind that the Jewish people did not understand these puzzling statements. I say that because it is difficult for us to understand, and we've had 2000 years to digest and analyze them. In hindsight and in view of history and the rest of the Bible, it is evident that Jesus was referencing His upcoming death and crucifixion as an offering of His body and blood. Life was considered to be in the blood, and flesh represented humanity. Jesus, as a human, died, giving up His flesh and His blood. We assume that death is a part of life – what's that saying…the only sure things in life are death and taxes, right? But death is only a given because of sin. When God created humankind, His purpose was that we would spend eternity with Him. Life was perfect. The earth was perfect. But then man sinned, and the effects of sin ushered in not only death, but disease, corrosion, pain, suffering, rain … I could go on and on. The penalty for our sin is our death. We sin. So our death IS sure. But JESUS lived a perfect, sinless life, and should have never died. He gave up HIS life, in payment for ours. And He rose again, that we might be resurrected if we accept the gift of salvation that He offers us. Remember that I said that like manna that fell from the sky through no effort of the Israelites, God comes to us through no effort of our own? God CHOOSES to come to us. Jesus CHOSE to come to us. Though no effort of ours, Jesus died for us. Our role is to believe – to accept the gift of His body and blood as a sin offering. Jesus' body is our true food, that can bring us eternal life. Jesus' blood is our true drink that will keep us from thirsting for eternity. Jesus reiterates beginning in verse 56…  56 Anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him. 57 I live because of the living Father who sent me; in the same way, anyone who feeds on me will live because of me. 58 I am the true bread that came down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will not die as your ancestors did (even though they ate the manna) but will live forever.” We must receive Jesus to live. As complicated as it seems, it really is that simple. There have been theologians throughout the years who use this passage to say that to receive salvation, Christians must literally eat the flesh and drink the blood of Jesus via communion where the bread and wine miraculously become the flesh and blood of Jesus. There are others who also believe that salvation hinges on communion, but consider communion as a symbolic ingesting of the flesh and blood of Jesus. But there are many, and I am in this camp, who believe that this teaching is separate from the teaching of communion. At the last Passover supper, Jesus told His disciples to eat and drink in remembrance of Him, but nowhere linked the physical eating and drinking to attaining salvation. Instead, receiving communion is an act of worship and praise as we remember all that Jesus has done for us. In this passage, however, Jesus was teaching that to receive the true bread of life, we must repent and surrender our lives to Jesus. We must live by faith, believing that Jesus died for our sins. To eat the bread of life is to accept Jesus into your life and to live with the Holy Spirit inside – guiding you, directing you and sustaining you. We live in a sinful world, and our bodies will die. But when we yes to Jesus, we begin living a life that will last forever – just as God originally intended. Our commitment seals us to Him as wedding vows seal a bride to her groom. And Jesus will walk us into God's presence on His arm – from now until eternity. Jesus is the Bread of Life. The only sustenance our souls will ever need. Will you pray with me… Dear Most Holy Jesus…we come to you today repenting of our sins and giving our life to you. You are the Bread of Life – your promise to sustain us into eternity is sure – we just need to hold out our hands to you. God help us to surrender. Help us to listen in faith when we don't understand. Help us to trust your perfect timing when we think we know the best way. Help us to always cling to you. Quiet our murmurs and help whatever unbelief we still hold in our hearts. We give you our lives and trust in your ways. In Jesus mighty name, I pray. Amen.

Hey thank you so much for listening to the ee in  bb show. Got a cool story for you guys today. It actually happens quite frequently.  I think there is so much ego in this industry with coaches who are win and pro card collectors that are also geniuses at marketing themselves as THE coach to work with if you want to win.. so sometimes it's hard to know if you are making the right decision for yourself. Unveiling the nonsense is a major drive for me and why I am doing this show. I have to laugh for a moment because …. Did you know that coaches can become possessive?  I had a coach that wouldn't let her clients work with me without knowing when all their appointments were and had to approve them ahead of time. I would get inquiries from her people and out of respect I would let them know their coaches' wishes to be notified before working with me. Oddly enough I never heard from one of those clients again after that. Not one. This was such an eye opener for me how controlling coaches are …. And how easily influenced competitors are by their coaches.   Most of the time competitors come work with me after they are already working with a coach on the nutrition and training portion of their contest prep and have already picked a show. Most of the time trainers will give their clients their blessing out the gate to “allow” their athletes to work with me. The ones that actually have their clients best interest at heart.  But then again sometimes my opinion differs from their other coaches' opinion and that can be challenging for a competitor. I believe that at the end of the day the decision is up to the competitor. When I think of high level sports like football for example there is the head coach and then there are separate coaches for different specialties. These specialists are trusted to do their job and do it well. Conflicting messages from coaches not only undermines the confidence of the competitor in the coach, but the competitor's overall confidence. Competing means a lot to us. The dedication that it takes to do what we do to get to stage, the last thing we want to feel is that a stone was left unturned somewhere. No one wants to find out that 12, 16, even 20+ weeks of prep was affected by ANYTHING that could have been easily avoided. For most of us we can't just get back on stage weekly.  There is a process to competing. You dial into the show and bring your body fat levels down to uncomfortable levels. Then you just as carefully dial out of a show to give your body a break from being on poverty calories and to also have enough time to grow and improve muscle. And if you are on PEDs you have to go through an additional process of post cycle therapy to allow your body to go back to some sort of hormonal balance. I haven't gone through this process myself since I've never taken PEDs but I know people that have and I will be bringing on experts in a future show to shed some light on this taboo topic that gets swept under the rug.  My point in talking about the process of competing pre and post show is to say that there is so much time preparing for a show and in between shows. The last thing you want is to have to wait another 6 months or a year to get another chance on stage to correct something you should've known about.  It always amazes me how influential coaches are over their athletes.    Something to think about…ask yourself…has your coach asked you what YOU want to do? What YOUR goals are and how THEY can help YOU achieve them?  I hope one thing you take away from this podcast is that competing is a hobby. Hobbies are supposed to be fun. Hobbies are supposed to be fulfilling as well. I deep dive more on this in the pdf ebook that I wrote. It's the one I mention in the intro and outro of this podcast.. I really give you some things to make you go hmmmmm.  You are spending a lot of money for this hobby. It should be about you and what your best interests are.  Keep this in the back of your head and go grab the ebook to hear some more of my real talk advice.  One time I was working with a competitor on her posing for a fitness universe competition.  She had competed before but wanted to up her game and get a pro card.  She was planning to do one of the biggest shows of the year in Las Vegas that attracts hundreds of competitors. Doing the show meant paying for multiple days of hotels, flight, food prep for travel, on top of all the usual show expenses. And here's the kicker.  Doing a fitness universe show is very different than doing shows in npc, wnbf, ocb, or even wbff shows. What makes this federation different is you are scored on your individual presentation. You are not scored against other athletes while standing in a row on a designated line across the stage. Instead, you walk out by yourself and your presentation along with your physique is scored then.  No matter which division. From male model, to female model, to figure, you are scored individually.   So I worked with her for many weeks on a routine that made her look great and feel confident. I played with her angles to accentuate her best features and hide flaws.. She had an incredible transformation and she was excited to get to Vegas and show all of her hard work!  I remember being on our last video call before the show and how excited we both were!   Then I get a message from her the day before the show that she was told by another coach to not do what we practiced and to do what SHE says for her performance instead.  And remember, her performance is critical in order to score well in this federation! I told her I think she should do what we practiced since, here's the thing, At the end of the day, it mattered less what she was doing; it mattered more HOW she was doing it! Getting up on stage and looking like you feel like a million bucks will convey enthusiasm, positivity, likability, and attractiveness. For a federation that is looking for exactly these things, it is critical that you feel confident and not be a timid Tiffany on stage or a total bore.   Well, she didn't do what we practiced ….or stand out because this coach inflicted doubt in her head. In fact, it was like someone stuck a pin in her balloon of confidence. Leading up to the show she was confident and excited because she felt prepared. The message the day before the show to not do what we practiced deflated her confidence because she no longer felt prepared. What an epic fail.  After the show she decided to try again and this time do what she practiced. She not only lit up the stage, she captured the judges' attention and took home a first place trophy and a pro card that day.    So why do I Bring this up? It's one of the strategies I teach in my free pdf at eeinbb.com if you go to eeinbb.com there is a pdf called 5 tips every bodybuilder and fitness competitor needs to know before preparing for a show.  It's going to give you unbiased, real talk, advice no matter what level you are on and it's 21 pages. What I did was grab 5 of the most common mistakes competitors make when en route on their competition journey.   Before the prep goggles go on, I suggest you read it and keep all 5 key points in the back of your head so you can better look out for yourself in an industry that is unregulated and much like the Wild West. By the way I recommend you listen to this podcast from the very beginning too. Each of these episodes do build on each other. Just fyi there. Start at episode 1. These are extremely thought out podcasts. What I'm trying to do is guide you guys through a series of ahas starting from a 30,000 foot view and will guide you into more specific topics as we continue forward. So anyways, start at episode 1.  If you are listening to this right now and thinking …. well, I've got my show picked and I feel good about who I am working with as a coach. Awesome. But let me ask you a question that I hope sticks with you throughout your entire competition journey not just one show. I want you to ask yourself,  Who were you before the world told you who to be? There is one thing to ask for advice, counsel, seek out professionals, and trust the advice of the dr, lawyer, carpenter, plumber, etc. But also know that there are professions within professions too. I recently went to the orthopedic for my shoulder. I had dislocated it a few years ago when re-racking a barbell and missed the latch on the left side. Recently over the last year, completely unrelated, I have tendonosis in my elbows. I had to go and see a different orthopedic for my elbows than the doctor I saw for my shoulder. Both orthopedics, different specialties.  There is so much to know in the sport of bodybuilding. The more I competed the more I realized that there is a lot of people who are not specialists who get away with coaching people because, let's face it, if you restrict calories, most people will lose weight. If you throw Bob on a treadmill for an hour a day after his only previous exercise was walking to get French fries at his lunch break, Bob might lose some weight for a while until his body adapts to the stimulus and it no longer works…and then he needs MORE stimulus to see changes. Such coach then cuts more calories to save the day.    But really guys, competing shouldn't suck that bad when you are new. The further you are from your genetic potential, the faster you will see results out the gate…..no matter what you do!   So the #1 goal of this episode is to help you to see and think for yourself.  I want you to feel empowered.  I want you to say no when it's not the right fit, seek out everything and anything to be your best and gain a competitive edge. The men out there, you don't have to work with men to gain a competitive edge. Women, you don't have to work with just men or women.   Again….who were you before the world told you who to be?   You are driven, You are focused, you are motivated to make change. And you want to look, feel, and be your best in the process.  No one should ever have the power to take that away from you for their own self gain.  No coach should disallow you to work with a posing coach when he or she isn't a specialist themselves.  No coach should have the power to babysit a grown adult on his or her appointments with a specialist.  And no one should have the power to burst your balloon of confidence the day before show by undermining another coach's months of work with you to bring out the best in you.  Go grab my pdf, read the strategies and real talk I share in it, and never stop thinking for yourself. There is one more thing I want to touch on.  People say bodybuilding is dead and not like the golden days. Not true at all. There are more divisions that are achievable for people where you don't need to spend 10 years building the physique to be competitive in them. Things are not going to get back to the way they were. We aren't going back. standards are higher. Especially with more peds. The bodies are bigger, harder, and the high conditioning levels are now the expectation. More categories keep getting added too so there is something for every body type. Like wellness, that's new in the npc/ifbb and it's being talked about being added in other federations like ocb which is a drug tested federation. And add in the men and women 35+ Masters divisions getting more and more populated too. In fact, I saw that there is a world championships for the masters divisions being added to the IFBB in 2022.  People have asked me… how do you survive in an industry where most people come and go in a short amount of time? I would say because I evolved with the changing environment, never stopped setting personal goals, and kept my health a priority. Bodybuilding doesn't have to be short lived for you do the same.  Never stop evolving, learning, setting both short term and Long term personal goals, and seeking out the specialists to help you fine tune all aspects of your show prep so you can become your best over years of time, and not just over a few months of prep. Go to eeinbb.com and read it. Want you to see bodybuilding from a 30,000 foot view.  You have more control than you think.  Do you, boo. Alright guys that's all I got for you today. Go check out that pdf at  eeinbb.com pdf and I'll see you guys in the next episode. Please please please help me convince iTunes that I'm awesome and go give me a sweet review if you don't mind. even if it's not sweet, give me an honest review. Whatever it is that you want.   And I'll see you on the next episode
