Legendary DJ Jim Ladd would have been 76 today, born Jan. 17, 1948 and passed away Dec. 16, 2023. Were you a listener of Jim Ladd? Steve and Dan share their stories as two generations of fans and will cite some work Jim did with Billy Sherwood of Yes. Below is info from Wikipedia:"Jim was one of the last of the "Freeform" rock DJ's the United States Rock Radio. Ladd began his career in 1969 at KNAC, a small Long Beach rock station. After two years there, he moved to Los Angeles station KLOS. In 1974 he moved to KMET, known to its legions of listeners as "The Mighty Met", where he would remain for most of the next 13 years (returning to KLOS in 1984, but going back to KMET again, 2 months before they changed format), while also hosting and producing "Innerview," an hour-long nationally syndicated interview program that aired during the same period weekly on over 160 stations nationwide for twelve years. Ladd and his free-form rock music returned to KLOS in 1997 and aired until October 26, 2011 Monday thru Thursday from 10PM to 2AM (PDT), and on Sunday from 9PM to Midnight. His show routinely led its time slot in Arbitron ratings. KLOS renewed his contract in January 2007. In addition, he has produced, written and narrated a number of nationally syndicated programs, including interviews, concert specials and album premieres .On December 2, 2011, Sirius XM Radio announced that Jim Ladd would host a live, daily free-form music show on Deep Tracks, channel 27 (now 308). This show ran from January 2012 to December 2023." --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/yesshift/support
Kicking off Season 3 of Deep Tracks we explore the birth of the King of Rock 'n' Roll himself, Alan Greenspan! Okay, just kidding, we're gonna be FINALLY diving into the life of Elvis Presley! But, in order to lay some groundwork for the launch of his career, we also have to talk about the people who helped make that happen. So, this episode will also feature "minisodes" about Dewey Phillips and Sam Phillips. Then we look at the birth of Elvis, his childhood in Tupelo, leaving off when his family is just about to make the move that would change their lives forever, to Memphis, Tennessee...
Doo wop DJ to the gods! That's how I refer to him. Among his many talents, Joe is a DJ for WMWM 91.7 and https://northofbostonradio.com/ and spins his best Doo Wop on Uncle Henry's Basement and Uncle Henry's Folk show. Sometimes that's usually followed up playing DJ's picks on Heart of Saturday Night where you can expect a mixture of Psychedelic, Folk, Deep Tracks, Jazz. Questions, questions, questions! What music falls under the genre title of Doo Wop? What groups are considered Psychedelic? That's the first half of the show. Joe is also artistic director for Bedford Off Broadway in Bedford NH (https://www.bedfordoffbroadway.com) and so we jump into their upcoming show (directed by himself) “Blame it on Beckett”. The staging of the show has them using the old Bedford Town Hall in a very interesting format.

In an effort to not only promote rock but also defend it, Alan Freed helped spearhead the production of three rock 'n' roll-themed films that came out in the mid-1950s: "Rock Around the Clock," "Don't Knock the Rock," and "Rock, Rock, Rock!" In this episode, we take a look at these movies, make some smart-sounding commentary, and even riff on them a la MST3K. It's a bit academic and a bit campy, but it's all deep... (see what I did there? "deep" as in "Deep Tracks"? Cool, right?)

Hello Everyone and welcome back to this special addition of Punch Me In! On this episode, we will be going over our favorite deep track songs by some of our favorite artists! Do you like our picks? Do you dislike them? What are some that we missed?
It's Ron Carter's birthday! While we certainly wish him the happiest of birthdays, we felt compelled to highlight what we feel are some of the deeper tracks in his catalog as a leader. While these tracks may not be discussed as often as others - they all certainly have tremendous merit! We hope that after listening to these, it will give you more music and discussions about this great artist. Enjoy!
Thrashers the world over are still in shock over the retirement of the mighty Slayer, so let's lighten the mood by curating a playlist of of the band's best deep album tracks. In our lexicon, a deep album track is one you'll never hear of the radio (Slayer on the radio? Ha!!) and was rarely (if ever) played live. It's simple - hit play and let the atrocity vendors rip your soul apart throughout the crypts of eternity!!! Show No Mercy (1983) (0:00) Tormentor Hell Awaits (1985) (3:45) Crypts of Eternity South of Heaven (1988) (10:26) Cleanse The Soul Divine Intervention (1994) (13:28) SS-3 God Hates Us All (2001) (17:31) Exile Side 2 Christ Illusion (2006) (21:26) Catalyst World Painted Blood (2009) (24:33) Unit 731 (27:12) Public Display of Dismemberment Repentless (2015) (29:46) Take Control (32:59) Implode (36:40) Atrocity Vendo
This week we take a trip down memory lane and discuss Los Angeles free form radio from the 70s and 80s. We also discuss a technology that may make LCD TVs obsolete. And finally we talk about audio reviewers and whether it's worth listening to what they have to say. Plus we read your emails and the week's news. News: Hisense Logs Record 2022 TV Shipments, Now Second Largest in the World Xperi CEO's Bold Declaration: TiVo OS Will Power 7 Million Smart TVs By 2026 LG Display Calls Out Samsung QD OLED Screen Burn Other: HT Guys Listener Playlist Thank you Joseph MantelMount Freeform Radio from the 1970s and 80s The other day I was wondering about a DJ that used to work at KLOS in Los Angele. Her name was Linda McGinnis. She had a beautiful voice and was an excellent DJ. So I wondered if she was still on the radio someplace. As it turned out she had passed away in 2003. If you lived in San Diego or the Bay area during the 70's and 80's I am sure you heard her. However, in doing my search I found a couple of recordings that some had done and digitized off of an old cassette tape and posted on the Internet. It was an hour of Linda's daily show from October of 1981 replete with commercials of the day. It was a glorious trip down memory lane! This started my trip down the rabbit hole! I found many other recordings from the DJs of KLOS and KMET all making me sad for the days when radio had true artists spinning the tunes. Back then, at least on freeform rock stations, DJs would curate music for you and help you discover artists and bands you never knew you needed to hear. For the past few days, I have been listening to these recordings in my car with a huge smile on my face. Some DJs like Jim Ladd (from both KLOS and KMET fame) have freeform shows on Sirius radio. Jim can be found on Deep Tracks channel 27. Otherwise if you had a favorite DJ from your youth I recommend that you search his or her name and see if there are recordings from back in the day. You will thank me for this. Surprisingly, Apple Music Radio is old school with it's DJs. My tastes have broadened to include country music so I listen to Apple Music Country and find their DJs are very much like the DJs of the 70s and 80s. They create sets based on their mood, time of year, or what their listeners are requesting. The DJs are in the industry and based in Nashville so they have their fingers on the pulse of what is happening in the country music scene. I have discovered a bunch of country artists before everyone else in my circles. It's kind of fun being ahead of the curve like I was in highschool! I am giving my daughters music suggestions and they are wondering how on earth this old man knows about new artists before they do!! I haven't listened to the other Apple Music stations but I assume the same thing happens there. Do you have a favorite station that's old school? Let us know because it's probably available through an app. I am going to play about a minute of Linda on the radio. It made me sad and happy at the same time. Also, John in Cornwall there is a baseball comment in there that I hope you enjoy! Linda McInnes, KLOS-FM Los Angeles, CA December 28, 1981 (Restored Unscoped) Bob Coburn, Steve Downes, KLOS-FM Los Angeles, CA July 6, 1982-May 21, 1990 (Unscoped) Meta-display concept could retire LCD panels in big-screen TVs The metasurface display technology could replace the LCD layer in flat-screen televisions, bringing thinner panels, higher resolution, fast response times and lower power consumption. Full article here… The metasurfaces are 100-times thinner than liquid crystal cells, offer a tenfold greater resolution and could consume less energy. metasurface cells would replace the liquid crystal layer and would not require the polarisers, which are responsible for half of wasted light intensity and energy use in LCD displays. The new technology pixels are made of silicon, which offer a long life span in contrast with organic materials required OLED. Moreover, silicon is widely available and cheap to produce. The metasurface array could effectively just replace the liquid crystal layer in today's displays, which means manufacturers won't need to invest in brand new production lines to make panels. The next phase of research will be building a large-scale prototype and generating images, which is hoped to be achieved within the next five years. Once the prototype has successfully generated high-definition images it is expected the technology will be integrated into flat screens and available to the public within the next 10 years. A Room Full of Audio Reviewers Can't Hear Obvious Flaws A couple months ago, I went to a press event I decided not to write about. The reason I demurred is that I could hear crackling and hiss coming out of the speakers when nothing was playing. But it occurred to me that no one else noticed that the system—a six-figure rig with some well known high-end gear in it—had the noise floor of a transistor radio playing static. This is not the first or last time I've been in a room with audio reviewers who seemed to have no clue. I can recall one demo where the tweeter was blown on one of the speakers, and another where the source material turned out to be 96 kbps MP3. No wonder some of these folks avoid double-blind tests like the plague. Entire Thread on AVS Forum

Anyone can sing along to the hits, but it takes a true fan to know the deep tracks - an album's less popular songs that get buried between the more radio-friendly Billboard bops. If Jesus' teachings were an album or a playlist, scattered among his greatest hits - like The Good Samaritan, The Golden Rule, and Love Each Other - you'd also find his deep tracks that could shock or even offend you - such as Hate Your Parents, Die Fig Tree Die, and I Bring the Sword! What are we supposed to do with the most confounding things that Jesus had to say? Join us for this six-week series to learn more.

What is Philly Soul? Well, the personification of that sound can be best heard in the slow, soulful ballads and great high harmonies of the 3 members of this under appreciated band. We go deeper than just the hits like "la-la Means iLove you" and "Didn't i blow your mind (this time)" Enjoy

Back in 1978 I saw Blue Öyster Cult and it completely changed my life. I consider this band the ultimate Rock n Roll band. They have Hits,Deep Tracks, Smoking Musicianship and an unreal live show. They have a brand new record out right now called The Symbol Remains and it is unbelievable. Do yourself a favor and buy it today and when this Covid insanity is over go see them Live. Think about this, in 2022 Blue Öyster Cult will be celebrating their 50th Anniversary. I love this band and It was an Honor to talk to Buck. Candles Lit DDR
Bill Fitzhugh Bill Fitzhugh is the award-winning author of ten comic and satiric crime novels. His debut, Pest Control, was translated into half a dozen languages, the film rights sold to Warner Brothers, it was produced as a popular radio show in Germany, and as a stage musical in Los Angeles. Prior to Human Resources, Fitzhugh published The Exterminators, the sequel to Pest Control. The New York Times said, “Fitzhugh is in a league with Carl Hiaasen and Elmore Leonard…he is a strange and deadly amalgam of screenwriter and comic novelist.” The late, great political humorist, Molly Ivins said, “Fitzhugh is one seriously funny guy.” A one-time FM rock deejay, he wrote, produced, and hosted Fitzhugh's All Hand Mixed Vinyl for five years on Sirius-XM's Deep Tracks channel. Born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi, Fitzhugh lives in Los Angeles where he is at work on his next project. Connect with Bill. Billfitzhugh.com
Back before corporations acquired (and systematically destroyed) rock radio by playing the same 10 songs on perpetual repeat into the dirt, radio disc jockeys used to actually have some control over their “playlists” and would sometimes throw on a song that wasn’t a normal rock radio favorite: maybe something that wasn’t a “hit single”, or something for which there was no “music video”; something longer, something unusual, something off the beaten path: we call these Deep Cuts. That’s what us Metal Nerds call “The Good Stuff”. And when it comes to Black Sabbath, it’s ALL Good Stuff!!! There’s just one problem: because WE THE NERDS here at Metal Nerdery are already so intimately familiar with what shall be henceforth known as “The First Six”, it was kind of a challenge for us to each pick our favorite 6 deep cuts from The First Six Black Sabbath albums. There were a few that overlapped on our respective listicles but we tried to go as deeply as we could to give those of you who are only familiar with side 1 of ‘Paranoid’ a nice sampling of what we call “That GOOD Sabbath”. JOIN US after you’ve finished your bowl (of breakfast cereal) as we discuss our favorite “deep cuts” from our favorite first 6 albums by our favorite First Godfathers of Metal, Black Sabbath. Also check out our live stream of this episode on our Facebook page and find out whether or not Russ will show his “Man Tetons” on Facebook. I changed the usual format and theme from the usual Deep Tracks to what was played on the Radio back in the 60's & 70's. More or less I'm playing hits from great bands of the period. Songs that your typical person born in that era would know. I had a lot of fun putting this episode together so I think I may continue in this sort of "Hit" vein for the next couple of episodes as there are a lot more bands and hit songs from that era. I hope you enjoy this. Please give a review either way. I do appreciate it.Dino

This week, the gang is joined by Steven Michael to talk about their favorite lesser known tracks from AC/DC. Can BB find any Brian Johnson songs he enjoys? Will Steven bend the rules like Steve always does? Does a song being in one of the most popular movies of all time disqualify it from being considered "lesser known?" Tune in to find out! Deep Tracks Only? What's that about? Danny and Brook take the best of pop culture, books, events, experiences and discuss the topics that are often missed. Like the b-sides or deep tracks of a record album, we will make sure you experience something new that you haven't heard before. See your favorite things in a new light and maybe learn to love the things you once hated. We take it and go deep at deep tracks only.

Before we get into the 1980’s we wanted to revisit the 70’s for a bit with a few deep tracks. And stay tuned in the 2nd half where Jason and Jordan go head to head in our first Name That Tune (1970’s edition). You can play along at home, and probably do better than they […]
This one is a RIDE, you guys! We wanted to do something really fun this week—something that would lighten the mood for us and for you. So, strap in, because we’re talking about our favorite Old School Category romances today! We’ve got something for everyone — wolves and dragons and marine biologists and single moms and more wolves! A word of caution this week — we didn’t reread these books before we recorded, and they’re all published in the 80s and 90s, so tread lightly if you decide to read them…and let us know just how wrong we got the plots! (Just kidding, we’re for sure rereading all of them now). Next week was supposed to be the deep dive of Lorraine Heath, but Sarah has a book due, so we’re putting it on hold—but stay tuned, because we’ve definitely got something coming! Waking Up With the Duke will definitely be the next read, though: Get it at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple Books, or Kobo.Show Notes- If you're looking for a real cool summer sleepaway camp, check out Camp Kupagani. They'll pick your kid up at O'Hare!- You can order girl scout cookies online now. Good luck to all of us.- If you're in Chicago, I guess you could go to Navy Pier; But if you're in Peru, you should definitely go to Machu Picchu.- That American Dirt story is real wild. This review by Myriam Gurba is amazing, and Vox has you covered with an entire explainer. Remezcla has better recommendations for books about the border.- If you want to know what makes something a category romance, Love in Panels has a very good explainer. Also, if you're interested in Harlequin covers now, Jen interviewed Tony Horvath for Kirkus. He's the creative director in charge of all of Harlequin series romance.- Buying old category romances is easy. Check out ThriftBooks for the best prices and best shipping (Amazon charges for individual items from sellers), but also Better World Books. And if you're lucky enough, local thrift stores and used book stores. For more recent remaindered books, try Book Outlet.- We mentioned so many category series today. Check out this blog by Steve Imes with all the category series names and dates, and FictionDB for listings of books by series.- Sandra Brown wrote as Erin St. Claire and also Rachel Ryan. She was an 80s powerhouse who still writes romantic suspense. The book Sarah mentioned was Honor Bound, but Jen was thinking of a similar book called Hawk O'Toole's Hostage. Ope.- Jen reread and reviewed several of her first category romances for the Book Queen. The one about Pink Satin compares the book to the Harvey Weinstein case. It's honestly shocking how little has changed for women in the workplace.- White Satin was an early Iris Johansen about figure skating, but that author is also for being the book that inspired the "Who Did it Better on a Horse" post. And at the end of the episode, Sarah mentions that she had a house for sale if you're on the market, BECAUSE IT'S REALLY A MANSION.- Brad Pitt is old and still working because of the patriarchy.- Deep Tracks is the name of an XM radio station that plays B sides and less popular songs, which is very on brand for the books in this episode.- Maybe you'd like to read those goodreads reviews for The Lady and the Dragon.- Jen loved Barbara Boswell. She was a fan of the Brady/Ramsey series where a bunch of sisters married a bunch of brothers. And then this one that is Brady Bunch fanfic. Eight is enough, I swear! Was this all Roe v. Wade blowback?- You actually can still get Harlequin subscriptions, but the best current Romance subscription is definitely the Bawdy Bookworms box.- In Demon Lover, the heroine thinks the hero is a coyote, but he's really an undercover DEA agent. Jen asked the Smart Bitches to help her find it in 2018, when it was available as an eBook, but it isn't anymore! All you need to know is that these 80s covers celebrated the Tom Selleck mustache in a big way.- Warrior was last in the McKenzie-Blackthorn series by Elizabeth Lowell. Light a candle for Utah, who never got his book. Ao3 needs to get on it! #JusticeForUtah- Virginity is a construct! Also, here's where the hymen is in case you need to know.- Sarah's on deadline, so who knows what's going to happen next week. Buy some stickers, buttons, or t-shirts to tide yourself over while we figure it out.- Please check out the photo array below for books we referenced. You may remember that we recorded an entire episode on category romances with Andie Christopher, but Jen screwed up the recording. By then, we moved on with Andie to cinnamon rolls. But Andie recommended Driven by Fate by Tessa Bailey, and Jen talked about Every Road to You by Phyllis Bourne. Sarah proably talked about Hot Touch, but Jen can't really remember...we'll just think of that episode as the one that got away.
