In this episode, Dan and Dana discuss "For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky". McCoy takes center stage in this episode. The guys talk about how a computer once again causes Kirk and company some new challenges that could affect McCoy's romance. There are colorful costumes, an asteroid that is actually a ship, and an old guy pushing "herbs". And, of course, there is a fair bit of rambling... We'd love to hear from you! "Now hear this. Now hear this. On this week's episode of Kirking Off we learn that McCoy's years of collapsing ceilings has caused him to only have a year left to live, so he beams over to a planet ship, buys drugs from a strange man who dresses like Pennywise, and gets married to a priestess. There is more than meets the eye on this planet of sword wielding cultists, and we learn that their overlord is some kind of Artificial Intelligence called the Oracle. It seems to guide these people with a religious pomp and circumstance, and obedience is the primary doctrine. To keep the subjects obedient the Oracle can inflict pain on troublesome folks through a neural implant. We also learn that the people who live on this planet ship have no idea that they are on a ship, and they have no idea that they are hurtling towards their demise. Brian and Dean discuss the woes of human management, and Nathan whips the word "Kismet" from the deepest recesses of his gamer brain. Questions pondered: will McCoy's marriage last? Does his new wife want it to last? Will Kirk, now a wingman, really just leave McCoy behind, or does he plan to return after the honeymoon period of McCoy's new nuptials ends? We present to you "For the World Is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky", from Star Trek: The Original Series." Soon after Dr. McCoy is diagnosed with a rare disease that leaves him with one year to live, the Enterprise encounters Yonada, an asteroid that's on a collision course with an inhabited planet. But as Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock soon discover, Yonada is not an asteroid, but is instead a spaceship designed to look like an asteroid -- a fact that its own people don't even know. That's where Dr. McCoy meets and becomes smitten with the High Priestess, Natira, leading him to stay behind and live out the rest of his days with her. But if time is running out for McCoy, it's also running out for the people of Yonada. If Kirk and Spock cannot figure out how to put Yonada back on course, they will have to blow it out of the sky in order to save billions from annihilation. For the first time in "Star Trek," DeForest Kelley shines in a love story for McCoy and is terrific with guest star Katherine Woodville. But instead of being a great episode, "For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky" is merely a good and -- dare we say it? -- "touching" one that reveals a little-seen side of Dr. McCoy. In this episode of Trekking Through Compliance, we consider the episode For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky which aired on November 1, 1968, Star Date Unknown. McCoy calls Kirk to sickbay and informs him that the ship's Chief Medical Officer (himself) has contracted an incurable fatal disease called xenopolycythemia and has only one year to live. However, McCoy assures Kirk that he will still be able to do his job until the end. Suddenly, the Enterprise is attacked and diverts and determines their point of origin, an asteroid 200 km in diameter, which is actually a nuclear-powered spaceship on a collision course with planet Daran V. The inhabitants do not know that they are on a spaceship, except for one old man who had climbed a mountain when he was young and intones "For the world is hollow and I have touched the sky." After uttering this, the oracle punishes the old man with death by means of a subcutaneous "instrument of obedience." They are able to put the ship back on course. They also discover databanks of the Fabrini containing a great deal of medical knowledge, including the cure for McCoy's xenopolycythemia. Compliance Takeaways: 1. How do you manage? 2. For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky was the eighth episode of Star Trek's third season to air, with a displaced civilisation unknowingly on course to destroy an inhabited world. In this episode Gerry and Iain discuss the difference between known unknowns and unknown unknowns. Intercepting an asteroid bound to destroy the world of Daran V, the Enterprise crew discover it is in fact an ancient spaceship containing a population unaware that they are not in fact on a planet themselves. Led by High Priestess Natira (Katherine Woodville), they are ignorant of their world's true nature. When Natira takes a romantic interest in the recently-diagnosed-as-terminally-ill McCoy, it seems the doctor may choose to live out his days on the asteroid-ship, but a new discovery shows him it may be possible to save the colonists as well as the people of Daran V. For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky was directed by Tony Leader, his only Star Trek episode. The writer was Hendrik Vollaerts, the third of his four for the show. In this episode Gerry and Iain considered whether a McCoy love story was overdue or unnecessary. We're coming out of our shell this week as we explore “For the World Is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky"!Author Greg Cox returns to the show this week to discuss an episode of Star Trek: The Original Series that is full to bursting with innovative sci-fi ideas. The Enterprise has discovered an ancient civilization living in a hollow asteroid generation ship. Can Kirk and crew save the unknowing inhabitants from their fate or will they---and Dr. McCoy---see their journey end in destruction? The short run of the Original Series was marked by unbridled creativity, with many episodes presenting multiple, original premises that made the nascent universe of Trek feel living and lived in. Supported by the work of contemporary sci-fi authors and creators, Star Trek delivered prime-time escapism that challenged the existing paradigm of sci-fi television. On this episode, we discuss the way in which TOS reflected the unbridled creativity of '60s sci-fi, what makes a TOS story, layering multiple premises into a single episode, the attraction of generation ship stories, using religion as a mollifying social force, the technological status quo of the Trek galaxy, and the Original Series' real opinion of utopias. We also discuss adding cyborgs to TOS, whether or not Catwoman can fly a helicopter, the lack of CPR in Trek, getting married for the hospice care, "have typewriter, will travel", thumbing your nose at the Nuclear Age, classic full-sentence episode titles, pandemic storytelling, an "evenness of difference", having Trek as your only credit, VHS board games, fascinating failures like Lynch's Dune, "Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex", how to tell your congregation your god is just a computer, and once again we play the Starlost game!Never promise to marry the alien priestess!Get Greg's new novel, "A Contest of Principles"!https://amzn.to/3gbm2hWLearn the story behind your favorite Trek stories with BackTrekking!http://www.twitter.com/backtrekkingHide out with us on Facebook and Twitter and the Just Enough Trope Discord!http://www.facebook.com/eistpodhttp://www.twitter.com/eistpodhttps://discord.gg/ATMBeUDBuy us a new god on Patreon and Ko-Fi!http://www.patreon.com/eistpodhttps://ko-fi.com/E1E01M2UASubscribe to the show on iTunes!https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/enterprising-individuals/id1113165661?mt=2

The Original Gravity Podcast explores modern music, modern beer, and the people behind these arts. In this episode, hosts Keith Kirchoff and Greg Carlson chat with composer Aaron Jay Myers about his work, his history with punk rock and improvisation, his drive to be a composer, and the almost spiritual impact music has on him. We listen to three of Aaron's works, including music from his old punk band Mad Max, his current band Zyzzyx, and a recent duet for two violins: For The World Is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky. Greg then determines exactly what beer would pair with Aaron's work.
This is definitely not episode 31 no matter what Brooke says!! An attack on a vital mining operation forces up the Discovery's timeline for getting its engines working. Burnham is tasked with learning what she can from the ships newest acquisition that can help their war effort. Today's triva: This, shockingly, is NOT the longest title in the history of the show. That honor goes to TOS' For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky.

Your stalwarts have their expectations dashed this week, folks! We positively loved "For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky," wherein a seemingly-dying Bones McCoy falls for the unwitting Captain of a generation ship. Meanwhile, the oft-lauded "The Tholian Web" bores us to tears as the "Enterprise" crew goes a bit space crazy (again) and McCoy belittles Spock's command ability (again) while trying to rescue a dimensionally-shifted Captain Kirk. Also this week: the nature of happiness; definitive proof that Vulcans are liars; and trying to figure out just how many "Constitution" class starships are left in the fleet. synopses: 2:20; For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky: 15:14; The Tholian Web: 38:08

So anticipation has been high for the band's third album; and at last they've cleared all moorings. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Five Year Mission themselves for a preview of Year Three and find out how the album came together, how the process differed from the past, and what inspired the sound of each track. Plus, the band gives us live acoustic performances of four tracks: “The Gamesters of Triskelion,” “I, Mudd,” “Metamorphosis,” and “The Doomsday Machine.” We also get hints of what's to come on Year Four, plus a “Spock's Brain” EP and an apparent obsession over “For the World Is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky.” In news we run down some great gift ideas for the Star Trek fan on your holiday shopping list and discuss the recent StarTrek.com poll about favorite cliffhangers from the franchise.

Our Man Bashir. The holodeck malfunction was a staple of storytelling on The Next Generation. So as the Deep Space Nine writing team set out to chart a different course, they shied away from this perhaps overused plot device. But sometimes a story comes along that it is just too fun not to tell. And if you can find a way to do it that ties into your overall premise, that's all the better. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Michael Fisher and Larry Nemecek to discuss DS9's romp through the 1960s life of secret agents as Dr. Bashir's holosuite fantasy goes terribly wrong, yet turns out to be the hero. In our news segment we find out what special features are in store for us on the Trek Nation special edition DVD, discuss the value and functionality of a Spock coin bank, make ice for the 24th century, find out which Abramsverse actor has been secured for Star Trek Las Vegas, and pay our final respects to Katherine Woodville, who played Natira in “For the World Is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky.”
