PHARR, Texas - An expert in manufacturing told students from Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD and IDEA Public Schools about the benefits of working in the industry.Mike Willis, executive director of the South Texas Manufacturers Association, managed a maquiladora plant in Reynosa for 26. He was one of the keynote speakers speakers at Pharr Economic Development Corporation's 4th Annual Manufacturing Day in Pharr. The event was held at The Forum by Regency.“We have about 16,000 people working in manufacturing in the (Rio Grande) Valley at over 500 businesses. They range from size to one or two people doing custom word sign shops, print shops, boot shops, all the way up to Space X and Seatrium AmFELS with 3,000 to 4,000 employees each,” Willis said. “I like to say in the Valley, we make everything from tortilla chips to rocket ships.”The average wage for manufacturing workers in Hidalgo County, Willis said, is $1,040 a week. “That is about 26 bucks an hour. That's an average. A lot of the entry level jobs, or low skilled jobs, are below that. A lot of the higher skilled jobs are above that.”In United States there are 13 million people working in manufacturing, Willis reported. He said Texas has almost a million of those 13 million. “So, Texas is the manufacturing powerhouse in the United States.”As for the STMA, Willis said the trade association has around 100 manufacturing companies as members. “A lot of the maquilas (in Reynosa) also belong. And a lot of them have manufacturing plants on this side of the river. And if they don't have manufacturing plants, most of them have pretty good sized distribution centers where the finished product comes over here to be shipped.”The big trend in manufacturing is automation, Willis revealed. “We've always used technology and embraced constant improvement, continuous improvement, but it's really accelerated the last five to seven years. Now we're looking at things like robots, automated assembly machines that talk to each other, unmanned, guided vehicles. There's a lot of changes coming in the industry.”This trend is going to make manufacturing more competitive in the United States, Willis predicted.“If you can use more automation, and you have higher skilled workers that can operate that more technical machinery, repair and maintain all that machinery, there's not as much labor cost,” Willis explained.“So, the cost of labor in Mexico or China is less of a factor when companies decide where to put their plants. So, I like to say that we're what we need today in manufacturing is strong minds, not strong backs.”Go to www.riograndeguardian.com to read the latest border news stories and watch the latest news videos.
PHARR, TEXAS David Ortiz, director of UT-Rio Grande Valley's Texas Manufacturing Assistance Center, has encouraged high school students to consider manufacturing as a career. Ortiz spoke to students from Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD and IDEA Public Schools at Pharr Economic Development Corporation's 4th Annual Manufacturing Day in Pharr. The event was held at The Forum by Regency. “There's a myth that manufacturing is boring, that it's very industrial, but it's actually exciting,” Ortiz told the students. “It is always exciting because there is always innovation. happening at a manufacturing site. There's always problem solving happening with great people and great teams. There's always technology developing.” Ortiz included a slide showing the development of manufacturing in the auto industry in the United States. He said when Ford Motors created the Model T, which effectively replaced the horse and cart, they were able to mass produce it and get one vehicle built every 47 hours. Today, he pointed out, the vehicles are largely assembled by robots. “I know it sounds a bit cheesy but (manufacturing) is an opportunity to change the world,” Ortiz said. By way of example, Ortiz pointed to SpaceX. His presentation included a slide showing SpaceX using its famous “chopsticks” to capture a rocket booster as it returned to earth. Ortiz said he has visited SpaceX's Starbase at Boca Chica. He said he was proud to see UTRGV alum working as engineers at the assembly plant. “For the first time in human history SpaceX was able to do that. How cool is that?” Ortiz asked. Ortiz added: “There's no limit in manufacturing. There are so many great companies, so many great people and opportunities.”Editor's Note: Go to the Rio Grande Guardian website to read the full story.Go to www.riograndeguardian.com to read the latest border news stories and watch the latest news videos.

WESLACO, Texas - In a report on Saturday, the San Antonio-based Rivard Report said IDEA Public Schools will pay former CEO Tom Torkelson $900,000. Previously, the online news organization broke the story of Torkelson’s resignation. At the time of the resignation, IDEA officials did not release Torkelson’s separation agreement or his contract as CEO. Through an open records request, The Rivard Report was able to obtain both. Click here to read the agreement. The chairman of IDEA’s board of directors is Al Lopez. The Rivard Report said Lopez wrote to funders and leadership team members on Friday, pointing out that the $900,000 equates to Torkelson’s salary and performance bonus last year. Click here to read Lopez’s letter. Both Torkelson and IDEA agreed to not publicize the transition package agreement. However, it is subject to the Texas Public Information Act.Lopez said IDEA has introduced new policies designed to strengthen governance and accountability. The new policies prohibit access to private air travel, business, and first-class seating on commercial flights. The Rivard Report quoted Lopez as saying IDEA has “clarified guidelines regarding what constitutes appropriate IDEA development and networking activities, including reasonable costs and specifying that official IDEA functions should take place at IDEA properties whenever feasible.”“With the benefit of hindsight, the board and IDEA’s management team wish some things had been done differently,” Lopez wrote. “We have embraced recent criticism and feedback as an opportunity to show how high-performing public charter school systems can respond and evolve quickly to do what is required of them.”The Rio Grande Guardian obtained one of the last audio interviews with Torkelson before his resignation from IDEA. Around the same time it interviewed state Sen. Jose Menendez of San Antonio, who was critical of IDEA’s use of funds for private jets and entertainment. In his interview, Torkelson said no taxpayer money was used to hire a private jet or pay for a suite to watch San Antonio Spurs games. However, he said he accepted the criticism that was coming his way. "If you are explaining, you are losing," he said. This podcast contains the interviews with Torkelson and Menendez.
PHARR, Texas - The superintendent of Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD, Jorge L. Arredondo, and the co-founder of IDEA Public Schools, Tom Torkelson were featured in a webinar hosted recently by the Rio Grande Valley Partnership.RGVP President and CEO Sergio Contreras wanted to know how school districts are faring during the coronavirus pandemic. He was particularly intersected in how students are being reached with all public and charter schools closed because of the COVID-19 crisis. One of the questions asked concerned the digital divide, which has been identified as a major problem in the Rio Grande Valley. Tens of thousands of students do not have access to the Internet at home and the fear is many will not be able to complete their homework assignments as easily as those that have good WiFi.Torkelson’s appearance on the webinar came the same day it was announced be would be resigning as CEO of IDEA.

HARLINGEN, RGV - The co-founder of IDEA Public Schools says just like competition is good for business, it is good for the parents of students also.Tom Torkelson spoke about the need for competition at a groundbreaking ceremony for IDEA’s first school in Harlingen. The nonprofit charter is now the largest of its kind in the nation. “People are asking us, why are we we opening up a school in Harlingen. Two reasons, one our San Benito School, three miles that way, has over a thousand students on the waiting list. We have got to open up a new school to alleviate that waiting list,” Torkelson said. “The second thing is… competition makes us better.”He went to on to give examples of how competition in the Rio Grande Valley is healthy.“I am sure Valley Baptist wishes they were still the only hospital here in the Harlingen area but now there are several. I am sure all you elected officials wish that every single year you got to run unopposed but competition keeps us honest and makes us better,” Torkelson said.“I am sure that those of you who own a business or a car dealership wish that you had a total monopoly on your community. But, the reality is consumers and citizens and residents win when there is competition.”Other speakers at the groundbreaking ceremony included state Sen. Eddie Lucio and Harlingen City Commissioner Mike Mezmar. Jill Dominguez, regional superintendent for IDEA in the Valley, emceed the event. The above podcast has the entire raw audio from the IDEA Harlingen groundbreaking ceremony.Editor’s Note: To read a full report on the groundbreaking ceremony for IDEA Harlingen, click here.

She is currently the Senior Managing Director of Creative Services and Student Acquisition at BASIS.ed. Let’s listen...Quotes:03:45 “That’s a really important place for anyone in enrollment to begin - understanding what the organization’s goals and objectives are.”17:02 “Our job is not to sell something. Our job is to inform parents about the right characteristics - to give them an opportunity to make a decision that’s going to be the best decision for them.”24:20 “We’re getting to a place where there might be systems that are trying to ‘do it all,’ and we might get into the danger zone of trying to over-automate contact. Sometimes a personal touch is more effective than 15 auto-generated emails.”29:50 “Data integrity, security, and the safety of information is something to be very aware of when you’re choosing a system. People’s privacy is very important to them.”31:07 “We are the wild, wild west right now in the US.
